In the past, we have loved the baked goods! However, after being a loyal customer, we received a batch of three bean cakes that did not have any sugar in them. We spoke to staff, and they confirmed this was an issue with this batch. I left messages four times over two months for the owner, and she didn't call until today. She said that since it had been two months, she wouldn't refund the $18 we paid. We, once loyal customers, won't be back. In good conscience, we cannot support a business that doesn't respond to a customer's repeated attempts at communication to resolve a simple issue. First timer during Covid-19. They were great and set up involved only allowing one person inside the shop at a time. A menu was placed on their door and once you knew what to order you could enter if no one was inside, of someone was you would just wait. You could also order through the phone though. The cookies were okay, I'm also not a big cookie person so they were nothing special. But the cake bites were delicious. They were chewy, like a moist chewy sensation. So if you're a texture person, I would double think about getting them. Cupcakes were also amazing! German chocolate had a delightful authentic chocolate taste to them. We are, it seems, not in the fan club for this bakery. We have sampled over the years breads, cakes, pastries, and confections by this bakery, and each and every time we can think of other bakeries that we prefer. We prefer oatmeal bread and croissants and Challah bread from Sarkozy's, we like the pastries from McKenzie's, and we like everything that comes out of Zingerman's bakeries (Ann Arbor). I think the bread that the Garden Griddle (Paw Paw) makes for restaurant use is better. The scones that the Victorian Bakery makes are okay - actually, nobody makes a better than average scone around here (the late chef of now defunct Cafe 237 made the best scones). If you invite us to an afternoon gathering or a baby shower then there'd better be awesome coffee and a Boonzaaijer cake. A cake from Bert's Bakery is an acceptable substitute. Sarkozy's also makes for Rosh Hashanah Challah bread with golden raisins. Yumm. So the Victorian Bakery gets a big yawning "okay" from us. We don't hate it; we just think there are more interesting and satisfying bakeries in SW Michigan. Would I go to a catered event and turn up my nose at a Victorian Bakery chocolate croissant? Nah, probably not. But would I ever seek them out from the bakery myself? Nah, probably not. Maybe only the scones. And who else bothers making with scones in this city? Few. Owner was horribly rude to a customer and her staff We paid $54 for an 8 inch cake. It was a special day my daughter's birthday. We tried a very small piece and the frosting tasted like pure lard. We thought maybe a worker used the wrong icing while making it ? We called the next day. And as snotty as she could be on the phone she said is there any thing left for me to taste ? That was rude enough but we brought it in and in front of a room full of customers she said. I will not remake or refund your money . She asked a few of her workers to try it they looked very afraid of her. Hardly looking up at her. It was horrible how she was acting towards us. For no reason. And reading all the comments and reviews. She keeps stating I will allways do every thing possible to make the customer happy. She lied about that. One more thing she added is there's alot of American food I don't like. We've disputed the bank charge. And if she doesn't refund our money. We're contacting the better business association. Everything here is awesome. The currant scones in my opinion are the best ever. Reminds me of being back in Ireland. The cake bites are definitely more than one bite and the pistachio is the best. The croissant sticks with the savory seasoning are a must try also. read more

Maria is exceptionally knowledgeable about all things pastry, able to explain the differences between most local bakeries use of Dutch techniques compared to other French, Japanese, Irish, British, etc... techniques. I just can't get over how cute this place is! They're conveniently located on my way to a couple things (I heard that they recently relocated to just north of downtown), the staff is always helpful and sweet, and the pastries I've gotten there are spot on. So far I've bought the almond shortbread (my mother-in-law is a shortbread enthusiast and said it was delicious), chocolate croissant (my wife's favorite pastry, and she said these were great), and some of the cupcakes- German chocolate and carrot cake. The German chocolate was fantastic! Not too sweet, moist cake with a good crumb to it, wonderful coconut frosting. I really want to try their chocolate raspberry cake, which is their specialty, but they haven't had one in stock when I'm there (if I needed something specific, I'd order ahead - this place is BUSY). I'm also looking forward to trying their bread, which is usually just rolling onto the shelves when I get there at 7:30 am. As COVID response they can't let anyone inside the bakery but you can pre-order and pre-pay online or by phone. I looked at all the options nothing looked especially good, the keylime tart sounded best 3$ it was ok, the frosting flower on top I took off wasn't good so I settled with 2 stars. Wouldn't buy it again,, and their other options didn't look good enough to come back and try something new. But this is all I tried and all I can speak for. Would have liked more tart lime flavor, thicker tart filling consistency, more of a delicate crust, or possibly Graham crust. read more

I liked the vanilla, hazlenut, and pistachio macarons and they were not expensive like many places. I did not love the lemon bar and found it had an odd metallic taste to it, not for me. The almond bars look good but are just really sweet with no contrasting flavor. I had something that looked similar that had berries in it and that was much better, but I forget the name of it. The rolls and cheesecake are pretty good. I stopped in again another time to try the chocolate cake and an almond croissant. The cake was just ok but it was moist. Forgettable. I was not happy to see that they falsely advertise the almond croissants. They do not have chocolate in them, ever, unless a sign says chocolate almond croissant, which it does not. I had to waste time going back inside only to find out they in fact do not sell almond only croissants, despite the sign saying that is what it is and that is what I paid for. No excuse for this. Most recently went in for some goodies on Dining Out For Life day (it's the last Thursday in April, and participating businesses -- mostly restaurants -- donate at least 25 % of their sales to our local HIV service agency, CARES. The Vic is one of a small handful of non-restaurants that generously participate. We love supporting businesses that contribute to the community through such endeavors!) Every time we go in it's like I'm a kid at FAO Schwartz drooling at all the wonderful possibilities! Unfortunately, I'd weighed in that morning so I had to keep myself in check this time! We settled on sharing the key lime pie tart and a vanilla macaron. It was absolutely the best and most fresh macaron I've had locally and was priced fairly. The texture of the key lime tart was heavenly, although the crust was a little too dense for our liking (we like a light, graham cracker crust for a great juxtaposition to the velvety key lime custard). This place is the Reall Deal!! I recently had the chance to try some of Maria's goodies and my absolute favorites are the sticky Toffee Pudding, the Tarts, the Zaatar sticks and the scones. The sticky Toffee Pudding is seasonal (saint patty's day) but you can order a full size one to be made for you. I have had Gordon Ramsey's famous sticky Toffee pudding in Las Vegas and the one I had at the Victorian Bakery was even better. First time visit to check out cakes. Need a torte for upcoming birthday. Preference is for European style tortes, sponge cake with buttercream frosting. So stopped in to check it out. Find too many bakeries have way too much chocolate stuff; there are plenty of other flavors! I could order one tailored to fit my tastes such a white cake, raspberry filling. So I ordered an overlarge cupcake and succumbed to a Blueberry Cheese Danish. Danish is cake/bread like not flakey pastry; prefer the assortment at Sarkozy's. The cupcake was dry and not really very tasty; too much frosting, could be less buttery. Okay, back to the drawing board for a cake - next stop Continental in Battle Creek; hope they still offer tortes by the slice and are truly 'continental'. read more
