So you want tickets to see Harry Pottery. Okay you didn't have to buy tickets to see The Jungle to purchase tickets to Harry Potter but they story line was "buy at ticket to see the jungle and be first in line to purchase tickets to Harry Potter". So I bought a ticket to see The Jungle. I play I have no idea about and most likely not a subject matter I care to see. So we get an email click here to purchase your tickets to Harry Potter. The only problem is that the computer picks the seat for you. For 3 days I tried over 35 days and 3 different price ranges. Here were me only options for a seat. Orch row B, Orch Row T or for over $100.00 more per ticket I could have Orch row C. I emailed the Curran saying that this does not seem right. I was told pick another day. Note above I picked every week in Feb except Valentine, every week in March, and every week in April. Always the same row and most of the time the same seat was the option. There customer service is ZERO!!!! I will no longer buy a ticket to a show I don't know for a chance to purchase a ticket to a popular show. I'm sure if I waited I could get a seat in a row that I would prefer to sit in. If the Curran's response is they are not doing the ticket sales for this production then they should not force people to purchase tickets to other show. NOTE that when I purchased my ticket for The Jungle I was shown on the web site what seats I could purchase and the price of those tickets. Horrible ticket purchasing experience. Signed up for presale couldnt get online due to online traffic got boot out after waiting for hours. Luckily when i finally got the correct number i did speak to a live person which is why they get 1 star and not 0. The absolute worst part is after fretting wether or not i would get tickets the phone rep did a poor job of explaining the options and ended up selling me the wrong tickets at a considerable price difference. Once i figured it out when their system was back online i called to exchange, or get a refund and was told all sales final. Would not recommend will not go through them again because of their unreasonable policies. read more

This is the last theater in the SHN family that I had to visit. Not sure what took me so long. Woohoo! Finally completed the trifecta. I came here with Nina Y. to watch Fun Home, which started late that day because the will-call line was insane. Fortunately that meant more time to enjoy the recent remodel of the theater. Beautiful colors and ornate designs inside the theater. I'm not sure what it looked like before the remodel, but now it's a total escape from the dingy neighborhood that surrounds it. The lobby, restrooms, and common areas are tinier than its counterpart theaters, but they really tried to cozy it up in spite of that. Fun Home was a pretty good musical. Not my favorite, but I look forward to seeing more productions here! read more

Do you like Kevin Spacey? Do you? Then go see Richard III at the Curran. Go right now. His performance as the bastard king is incredible. Quick tip 1 - don't sit in the mezzanine, in row g, in seats 17 or 19. There's either an angry poltergeist or an air conditioning vent that will blow on you all performance long. You'll have a sore throat the next morning. Quick tip 2 - read Richard III before going, or at least read the Cliff notes. Quick tip 3 - don't mistake the long first act to as the entirety of a one-act play. My favorite playwrights are Martin McDonagh, Mamet, Albee. I prefer contemporary or semi-contemporary works, typically. Shakespeare is a different experience, for me, and it usually goes one of two ways. Last night it went in a better direction, though I think exclusively because of the strength of Spacey's performance. The rest of the cast were passionate and on their marks, but he was uh may zing. I'm seriously considering writing the quicktips on the back of my hand and heading over again. It was that good. read more

Are we in New York? Well, if you've never been, this will definitely give you a taste of what it's like to watch a show on Broadway. My history here spans from classic shows in high school like Hello Dolly (Carol Channing, voicing her Lowell High School pride), 42nd Street, and The Wiz to my early adulthood favorites of The Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables (sorry, I dozed off at this one), and then, most recently, the pre-Broadway run of Wicked, and Jersey Boys. It's been a while since my last show so a recent special event for The Book of Mormon brought back these memories for me. Because I arrived early for this show, I had more time to take in the atmosphere of the theater and interact with the staff. All were friendly, from the doorman near the box office, the ticket takers at the various doors, and the ushers who politely reminded the audience that photos were not allowed inside the theater. Post-show, we saw the stage crew clear the stage and the various staff who manned the doors as we left the cast Q&A event. Oh yes, the venue itself is also well maintained. Came here last night to watch Elf the musical. This theater had a really old school feel, but felt very homey while not feeling like I was packed. Tickets here are a little on the pricey side, and the food pricey is a little on the insane side, but overall, if you pace yourself and are careful enough this place will be a great experience for you. Not sure where to review the Elf musical, but I won't do that here as this is only the venue. Still, a nice place overall. read more

Swallow it like the rest of us." The remodel is stunning. Super beautiful. A lot of folks griping about the bathroom situation. Wear a catheter or stand in line - it moves quickly. I was griping after I noticed gum on back of my suit pant due to someone putting gum on the underside of the seat. And to continuing griping - why haven't all stage theaters learned from Movie Theaters that the patrons want more arm room - and maybe a cup holder like in sports areas. 3.5 stars overall. 5 stars for the 4 amazing performances we've seen here over the past 1.5 years -- The Encounter, Bright Star, Head Over Heels (!!), and Soft Power. All were super interesting in their own ways, well-executed, and thought-provoking. We always sat in the orchestra but all seats in the venue seem to have good views. However, the venue, while beautiful, can be improved: - no water fountains... what? - seats are very closely packed, though not easy to change I suppose - drinks are $16+... just no. come on. - bartenders are snobby. I asked for water once, and they gave me bottled water, and asked for $12. Then I asked for tap, and he gave me a death stare. read more

Coming back strong from a brutal couple of years, the staff (and contracted security) at the Curran were amazingly hospitable and friendly. The theater itself was immaculate across the board from lobby to restrooms to theater seats. The show itself was fantastic, but I'm going to stick to the Curran here and talk about the awesome performance of the Harry Potter cast later. :-) At a time when we all need an escape, a welcoming environment and people who clearly care about guest experience, the Curran came through big time. read more

Every once in awhile, we come to the Curran for a show. This evening, we were here for the "Once". On this visit, I really got to see that this theater is really showing its age. The seats are tight and cushions are not that comfortable. I'm 6' and my knees were up against the seat back. During the intermission, getting to the restroom is a big adventure. The lobby is area is crowded with people at the concessions stand, the line for the women's restroom and then the line leading downstairs to the men's bathroom. The stairway is narrow and the bathroom is small with vintage urinals. Curran might be a charming historical theater, but improvements must be done to bring it up to 21st century standards. read more

I won lottery tickets to see Harry Potter The Cursed Child on opening night through TodayTix which was awesome but the seats were pretty bad: last row of the mezzanine section. It was hard to make out the faces of the actors on the stage and sometimes I couldn't hear what they were saying. Also, that night we were packed in there like sardines and without air conditioning! It was an unusually balmy day for SF and we were all sweating in our seats. It made the three hour play almost unbearable to watch. At least on the second night of the play it was cooler but really, that issue should never have happened in the first place. I wouldn't go back to that venue if I can help it. read more

Mezzanine Section, Row F, Seat 2 This seat is lopsided, the seat dips down to the left side. Curran theater is a historical building with amazing architectural details that will stun you. It's beautiful. For years I've watch various musicals and don't think there has ever been a musical that I didn't enjoy watching here. However, the ancient seats are not to be desired. The couple in front of us were biggies and every time they wrapped their arms around each other, they would accidentally hit our legs. People that sat in the back hit my head a few times when they swung their legs from one side to the other. I know it's not intentional but boy did it annoy me! As if the the no legroom seats are bad, on top of that, my $100 seat was lopsided and dipped to the left side. I felt like I was going to slip off during the show. The women's restroom is ACKWARD! You have to go down 3 flights of stairs to get to the toilets. There's only 6 stalls for the entire venue. The sinks are on the 2nd flight of stairs. It's like going through the Winchester Mystery House to get to the bathrooms. Not sure how handy cap or elderly can make it down those inconvenient staircases. The stairs to the Mezzanine section are not the same size. The stairs on the top are larger and when you get to the bottom, they magically shrink. Well, I did a 2 stair tumble and landed on my left bad knee. The next day, my left knee hurted. But I was mortified over the tumble more so than the pain of my left bad knee. Since musicals will always be a part of my lifestyle, my wish is for Curran theater to someday upgrade their seats to something more comfortable and reconfigure their bathrooms. read more

This theatre has 3 floors and has a magical old world feel to it. The chairs are not very comfortable though and there is very little leg room even for a short person like myself (5'1). The toilets are 3 stories down (basement) and the line snakes all the way up the staircase to the entrance so make sure you arrive early! Plus you need the extra time to find parking in the city! If you're watching ONCE - Come early & Bring cash to get a drink at the bar on stage! It was pretty cool to be able to interact with the set pre-show and during half time. read more

Everyone in the world loves to visit the city by the bay! Uh, why? Oh I know - the views are spectacular, the history romantic. I've lived in the east bay most of my life and I too long to visit the city occasionally. Once I get there I long to go back home! If you plan to visit the Curran near the holidays do yourself a favor, don't drive there because you won't get where you're trying to go. The venue - it's got old charm. The seating is cramped but then again I'm a large man. I was brought here to see Elf, the broadway version if one of my favorite holiday movies. I think Will Ferrell would be pissed! After the show I would have opened a can on any elf I came across. The neighborhood is dirty and scary, it's the tenderloin. The facilities - typical SF down two flights of stairs. Curran Theatre is similar to so many other older, mid-sized theaters in that it is filled with gorgeous, orante carvings (check out the ceiling), worn-down seats that really need to be spaced further apart, a lobby that's too small for full houses and bathrooms that need about three times more stalls (and wait room). My boyfriend and I came here to see the Book of Mormon on a night when it was sold out. We had fantastic front-row-center orchestra seats, so the view was great. I thought the stage was a good size for a show like this and the acoustics were some of the best I've heard in these kinds of theaters. I hope they never try to perform a more elaborate or lavish kind of show though (like Phantom or Wicked), because the stage is way too small for those. But for a modern musical like Book of Mormon, it works great. I agree with other reviewers that the bathrooms are deplorable. Old and incredibly smelly (to me, they reeked of rank body odor), each one has less than 10 stalls. The space to wait is narrow, so there is a lot of awkward "Excuse me, sorry, didn't mean to thwack you with my purse" going on while you desperately refresh Facebook on your phone to forget the fact that you've been waiting for at least 15 minutes. :/ read more

A smaller venue which is apparent by the cramped lobby and the single restrooms. I didn't even get a chance to look around the theatre to admire its architecture prior to the show starting because of the bathroom line. 20+ women waiting to use a single restroom? Ridiculous! I didn't want to get to the theatre too early to just sit and wait but had I known about the horrible bathroom lines, I would have just come earlier. Luckily, I made it to my seat 30 seconds before the show started. I almost thought the usher was going to make me wait until the end of the first scene to sit and I would have been pretty upset if I missed any part of the show. So FYI, get to the theatre early to use the restroom or use it somewhere else before getting there. I didn't think the leg room was too bad but I sat in the back of the mezzanine section and it was sooo stuffy. I felt like I was getting hot flashes and I saw many people in the section using their playbills as fans. I was able to find metered parking (ends at 6pm) nearby but the theatre is accessible by public transportation. read more

I hope you people are SO ashamed of yourselves. You actually have your staff members harass people in line telling them "oh, you need to get out of line, you don't have time to pee". I don't have time to complete a biological function because you decided it's inconvenient after you took my hundreds of dollars?! I will never come back here, I will tell everyone how horrible you treat people who need to pee. The Curran is gorgeous inside and definitely reminds me of an old, ancient theatre. However, the seating is very cramped and tight...so if you're sitting in the middle and have to get up and use the restroom...good luck getting out and pissing everyone in your row off unintentionally. Also in our section there was only a one stall bathroom. Most of the seats though seemed like you could get a good view however I found myself bending over alot because I was seated so high on the balcony with a rail in front of me. I saw Jersey Boys here today and did have wonderful time. read more

Came here again for opening night of Bright Star, the Steve Martin/Edie Brickell musical about 1920s North Carolina. I loved this musical. The songs were so buoyant and powerful. Loads of Americana and hootenanny. The presentation was very polished and acting was flawless. Story was a little confusing for me. Basically, a baby gets thrown out by parents. The baby is saved and one day becomes a writer for a publishing company he doesn't know is run by his actual mother. Sorry, spoiler alert. Actually, the story is kind of lame, but there's a lot of stage movement to make up for it. I just loved the music. Great theater production keeping this art alive. Got tix of TodayTix for $25 plus $5 service charge. We scored lower level orchestra seats with a great view. The best way to get tix is rush tix off TodayTix app at 9am the day of show. After the show, there was a reception in the lobby with various cookies, popcorn, and wine/sparkling wine. It was joyous! read more

Don't understand how the fire Marshall would allow this. The play? I'm jumping on the bandwagon and writing a review for both Jersey Boys the show as well as the theater itself. I really don't have much to say about the theater. It's in the heart of the city. Parking here is expensive and the pedestrians here think they have the right of way. The seats are small (or your ass is big). Great acoustics. Loved the show, so the theater didn't suck. read more

This theater is the best theater in the city. It's clean and the seats were great. I haven't been in here since Tempest in the late 90s and I was glad to come back and see Hugh Jackman perform. I recently came here to watch Beauty and the Beast during their short showing in San Francisco. This was my first time at the theater too. The theatre is smaller than the Orpheum Theatre and you have limited leg room. The theatre is a short walk from Union Square and is close to the BART station, MUNI, and parking garages. Overall, I had a wonderful time here and loved walking to Union Square afterwards to shop and eat. read more

Ok there is only one restroom downstairs, a bit of a line, reminds me of going to a stadium with long lines. Theater is cool, seats were meant for small people but the view was excellent. Small and intimate. Saw "a thousand splendid sun". It was excellent, the one musician created this eerie atmosphere. The play was excellent. Everybody should go see how people in other parts of the world suffer so much. Women without voice, invisible, tortured by the tyranny of men, treated as sex slaves, property and being owned. Theater seats def no leg room..I'm not that tall and my legs were getting cramped... I can't imagine how anyone that is taller than me me can sit in those seats especially for a very long time... I over heard a conversation of someone asking someone if they thought back then people were tiny ...that must have been the reason why they built it with no leg room hahaha... I've always enjoyed this venue whenever I see a show here. I've watched a couple shows here like In The Heights and more recently, Once The Musical. Once was AMAZINGLY good, so it helped to elevate the experience at this venue. Overall, nice intimate theater. Much smaller than Orpheum. For Once, my friends and I were able to get seats in the Mezzanine Level (Row D) and we were able to have a clear view of the stage. Close enough to see some details of the facial expressions of the actors. Helpful Tips: - SHN are now using these plastic tumblers when serving alcohol beverages. Remember to bring them as it is cheaper for refills (Plus it's environmentally friendly!). - Check out SHN's facebook for any pre show festivities. For Once, they had an on stage bar and folks were able to go on stage and experience some of the actors/musicians doing their pre show numbers. read more
