Ordered delivery thro Skip. Delivery was smooth as is often the case with Skip in K. They seem to deliver straight to your location without detours (unlike other delivery services in the area). We lived in the Little India neighborhood of Toronto for almost 20 years. We know Indian food. This place is horrible. 100 dollars of food for two people. Every dish was wayyyyy over salted and the butter chicken sauce was curdled and separated not to mention so sweet it was inedible. I told our host when he asked how everything was and he proceeded to lecture me on that's how they make their butter chicken. Zero effort to make it right. Suffice it to say we will not be back. I loved this restaurant. The people were so friendly, the service was awesome and frankly after years of searching for the perfect curry I found it here. I'm a huge fan of Indian food and have literally had curry in every city I've visited. This hands down the most authentic and tastiest Chicken Vindaloo I have ever tasted. Spicy though so beware. I'm sure they can make it a little milder if you choose but it was so good. Now that I am relocating to the Ottawa Valley. This is now my go to Indian Restaurant. Went back post-covid peak and this was the worst indian food (or even restaurant food) I've experience in this city (living here for the last 13 years). My chicken curry was so sweet - I'm Pakistani and trust me when i say curry should not be sweet like that. This was my second time and it was again underwhelming. The service was good enough, although we were the only table in the restaurant at noon on a weekday - that should have been a huge clue. The biggest disappointment was the food. Everything was sickeningly sweet - the tikka sauce, the raita, even the naan has sugar added to it. No spice or salt to be found any where. Definitely the best curry in the area! We come here every time we visit my boyfriend's parents. It's always fresh and delicious. My favorites are the lamb korma and the beef dhansak. It's always very flavorful. I have the cookbook too but it never seems to come out right for me. read more

Imagine being transported to an unforgettable culinary experience through a rich tapestry of smells, flavour and colour. Now imagine the polar opposite and you will have arrived at Curry Original. Never has there been a greater oxymoron in a restaurant name. Our dishes, although edible (they were cooked well), bore no resemblance to any Indian or Pakistani dish I've ever eaten, and was most certainly absent of curry. Our tandoor inspired butter chicken was white. I mean cream of mushroom soup white - containing none of the tomato or garam masala that you might expect. The basmati was definitely not. Rather, we had flavourless short grain rice. It was nice and fluffy though - a bit like Uncle Bens. If you're looking for a heavily sanitized version of Indian classics, this is a good place to start. If you'd like to expand your palette, I don't know of others in the Kingston area, but open to recommendations. read more

Atmosphere was great, food was pretty good, but the service was pretty bad. We had the chicken tandoori (which was really good) and the lamb madras (which was good but not amazing). The kulfi (a creamy mango ice cream) for dessert might have been the highlight. Based on food alone, it would probably get 4 stars, especially considering the price and the fact that its in Kingston and options for Indian food are limited. The place is really nicely decorated, and the patio looked amazing but it was too cold to sit out there in October. The restaurant was more full than we were expecting and overall a great vibe for a nice sit-down dinner. The major deal-breaker was the service. An older guy (most likely the owner) took our order but was frowning the whole time and rushing us through. No one gave anything close to a smile at any point or asked us how the food was. We had questions about the menu but didn't bother asking because of the poor treatment we were getting from the start. When we finished our dinner no one bothered to wipe down the table, even though we ordered dessert and sat down for a decent bit after that. The owner seemed (relatively) friendlier to other patrons who he might have known, so it might have been because we were students in our 20s. Either way, management of this place should really make an effort to improve the service and treat their guests better. Had the potential to get 4 - 5 stars from me if not for our negative experience with the staff. TL;DR Expensive, quick curry with good vindaloo First and foremost, take advantage of the 20% student discount. Portions are generously sized, but do not come with rice - we like to get takeout and make our own! Frugality, woohoo! The food itself was meh. We ordered the beef madras, which was quite disappointing. It tasted extremely sour, like whole lemons had been included in the curry. The meat itself was very tender and delicious though. On a higher note was the chicken vindaloo. This is SPICY! We love eating spicy food, and the vindaloo was definitely up there. If you are new to spicy food but still want to try the vindaloo, we would recommend mixing the vindaloo with a different curry. The vindaloo was flavorful, and the chicken was moist. All in all, there are better curries in Kingston on Princess Street. However, if you're closeby curry original, it's not a bad option to try their spicy vindaloo. read more

Good? Yup. Excellent? Only sometimes. This place is very good, but overrated. What keeps me coming back is a consitantly positive experience, and an offering of ambience that's greatly lacking in Kingston's other Indian options. When it comes down to it, though, I'll take a hole in the wall with devine food over high back chairs any day, so anything over three stars for this place is crazy talk. GOOD: Most of the menu. The warm chewy naan, always-delectable mango laasi, and an assortment of curries ALL hit the mark. COULD BE BETTER: The chicken vindaloo doesn't quite reach that heavenly, 'the flavors are incredible even though my face is melting' sweet spot that I like to see in a good vindaloo. Not sure if it was too sour or too sweet, but the imbalance allowed the fierce heat to overwhelm the dish and resulted in a one-note flavour. At least it was proper spicy. On the opposite end of the spice spectrum we come to another letdown: the butter chicken. This is typically a sure-to-please, creamy dish that can be counted upon to convert Indian newbs into Indian enthusiasts. So when it failed to wow my friend, I insisted on having a bite. To my horror she was right--my mouth did not water. For shame. OUTSTANDING: The lamb korma is off the charts delicious. I usually find korma too sweet and too mild, and I'm not even a lamb fan--but when the meat is melt-in-your mouth-tender, and every ingredient sings in your mouth, I won't just hop on the bandwagon--I'll drive the freaking thing! Curry Original Great service, great food, wonderful atmosphere. Three different servers took my orders. One got the wine, another heard soup, and a third got the maim course order. They watch like hawks to ensure they provide the best possible service. Touch your wine glass and two people head to the bar, one to serve it up and the other to deliver. Lay your credit card on the table and someone appears to close out the order. They deliver the bill and make sure you know they will close the tab as quickly or slowly as you like. read more

My girlfriend and I finally found ourselves at the Curry Original for lunch a few weeks back. I've been wanting to eat here forever... As soon as we were shown to our seats, our glasses were being filled with water and a papadam was on our table. The glass of water is a little thing but I think it speaks volumes in customer service - something others restaurants should take note of. Personally I hate having to always ask for one. To start, the "papadam" was amazing. I could of easily of had just them for lunch... I was pretty happy when he brought out a few more. We both ordered curry dishes off of the lunch menu - a little pricy I thought at first but ended up being well worth it in terms of quality and flavour. I ask for my curry (I think it was the lamb) to be spicy yet not quite Vindaloo hot. It was perfect; hot enough to get a glow but not hot enough to have sweat running down my forehead. We both really enjoyed our meal. Having been to India, eaten Indian food in the UK for months and visiting a plethora of Indian restaurants in Montreal; I would have to say this place is about my favourite to date. I'm rating The Curry Original as a 4 star for the meal and service and not a 5 because I have only eaten here once. I will however be eating there again the next time I go out for a meal in Kingston. The curry is more of English style Indian food. Chicken dishes are pretty bland, Tarka daal is really not tarka daal, it's bland daal!! Been to Curry Original several times over the past few years. It was introduced to me by a family who has been going to Curry Original since they opened. Food are always up to standard. The English style mentioned in the other reviews are true, for the meat were cut up in bite size chunks without the bones in it. "Authenticity" are over rated - would you like your dish with meat on bones? I don't think so. The naan are freshly made in the tandoori oven. Absolutely love the lamb curry. The meat was very tender. Their Peas palau is the best as well. The list goes on. It is a little pricey but definitely worth the visit. *they have nice patio too! read more

Wow, I don't understand the other reviews on here at all. Maybe it's because I used to live in Vancouver and was able to dine at really great Indian food like Vij's, but this place was a major letdown. We ate here with a group of 8. The portions were very small and overpriced for the quality. Everything was sweet. Way too much sugar added to the sauces and curries. I'm not much of a 'sweets' person, but even the other people in our group commented on the overabundance of sweetener. The food quality is average. I can make much better Indian food just using my trusty old Vij's cookbook. If you're looking for good Indian food in Kingston, I don't know of any better place to recommend so I guess this would be your spot. That said, if you have the time and inclination, you could pick up some much better ingredients from the farmers market and your local farmer and create something so much better. We were not asked once how things were after the food was served and the wait for the bill as quite long. The food was mediocre and a bit bland, (we only tried vegetarian dishes). The most disappointing dish was the rice. The rice was terrible and over cooked and we had to order naan as we did not want to eat the rice. The location is great but the food is not so great. They are fooling people in the name of Indian food. I ordered chicken biriyani from here and it was rice fried in turmeric with pieces if dry chicken breast. The biriyani tasted bitter from the burnt turmeric. Anybody who's tasted real biriyani would know this is not it...what a waste of money. Never again!!! read more

First impressions are everything. Aroma in Toronto may the best curry in Canada. Certainly the best out of Toronto, Vancouver (Vij is for people who have never eaten anywhere else, and is his invention, and ego, not the traditional rich tapestry that comprise the many cuisines of India) and Montreal (ugh, Devi on Crescent is passable on certain days, but overly expensive. I love the chef, do not get me wrong, and he was trained in India at one of the top hotels in the world, just make certain he is there before you order). I have had some amazing curry in LA, the old Tandoori Nights, which used to be in West Hollywood, and Akbar in Baltimore on Charles Street. OK. Curry Original. I like waiters to wear shoes. I do not want to have someone approach the table with gnarly 2 inch toenails and fluffy toe hair poking through their flip-flops. After ordering a 4$ iced tea and receiving a single Papadum, we asked for the traditional tamarind or mint sauce for that fried gram crispy treat. Nope. We asked if we could pay for some. Nope. We asked they made their own yoghurt. Of course! Hope, yet. We asked if we could purchase a salted lassie. Nope. All lassies were premade mango lassies. They could not take yoghurt, pop it in a blender and add salt. We asked if it was possible to have a curry without too many onions, as we have experienced misproportions before that have ruined the entire dining experience. Nope. This time smiling and being very condescending, smirking with some noticeable distaste, reacting with some wild man barely concealed hatred to what should be common questions. This has been my go to place for almost a decade. The first time my mom and I ate here we had stumbled on it by chance, and have been loyal weekly customers since that day. The food is AHmazing (I was once a picky eater and that butter chicken was life altering. I now enjoy everything from the samosas to the korma to the aloo gobi and I have never looked back). The service is wonderful, with warm, inviting faces that ensure you always feel welcome and well taken care of. They are worth the money for a night out or a date or even a "I just want comfort food" kind of day. I will keep coming back for many many more years to come! read more

My husband and I had our first visit here last Friday night. We walked in without a reservation, but got seated promptly at a nice table by the window. The restaurant has a nice authentic ambiance. Our young waiter did not speak much English, and when my husband asked what was on tap, he looked at us confused and walked away. Right away an older gentlemen (maybe one of the owners) came right over to us smiling and proceeded to take care of us for the night. We said it was our first visit, and he made many recommendations, and spent lots of time with us going over all the different menu items to find something we would both enjoy. My husband had a lamb dish and asked for it to be a bit on the mild side, which they accommodated. I had the butter chicken, and we had rice and naan bread. The meal was absolutely phenomenal! He also brought us these delicious onion patties as an appetizer. Whether everyone starts with this, or it was a complimentary thing since it was out first visit, I do not know. Regardless, they were delicious. It was an expensive meal, but you get what you pay for. We can't wait to return!! read more

Vegetarians view: Bangla rendition of indian dishes. To my surprise it was very flavorful though different from the usual. Pulao rice turned out to be plain rice. Breads were decent. Ordered takeout for three people today - we got the chicken jalfrezi, tikka masala and butter chicken. We also got 2 naan and 2 palao rice. Our total was $77. Pretty disappointing altogether. Naan was probably the saving grace - it was still soft and tasty. Chicken jalfrezi was meh. Butter chicken was a wonderful fluorescent yellow and while it wasn't the worst butter chicken, it certainly wasn't the best. Tikka masala had good flavour. Serving sizes were not generous. Palao rice was also yellow and tasted like regular plain rice - i guess we were paying the extra money for the colouring? Will not be ordering from here again. read more

The food her is fabulous!!! This is the only restaurant where I eat Indian food. The service is exceptional - all wait staff keep their eye on your table and serve your needs whether they are dedicated to you or not. The food is extremely well made, authentic and mouth watering. I have sampled most dishes and have especially enjoyed the Dall soup, the Mulligatawny, the pakoras and samosa apps are great, the Bhoonas and Vindaloos are fabulous. Food is decent but way too overpriced for the portions they serve I've always left this restaurant hungry because the portions are so small.. I've had filling meals and buffets for the same quality of food for half the price in Toronto. If you're craving Indian food in Kingston, there's not a lot to choose from.
