They took more than an hour 15 mins to bring the food. Then to pay they brought the machine and then said that it doesn't work so they took it and told us to wait we waited for too long then we found that it works and they didn't bring it, it was too late and we missed our bus. read more

I've brought visitors here many times, to my favourite spot for Indian food in Kingston. It usually goes something like this.... Upon entering, they look around, gaze at the admittedly dated decor, sketchy carpet, and give me a look that silently asks (are you SURE about this place?). An hour later they're amazed. The food has always been excellent, the service very good, and another great experience and good time at Darbar. That being said, I know some people who don't like Darbar. Let me explain why. 1. It's not "Indian" like some folks may be accustomed to if they have had lots of Indian food in other cities. Darbar is Bangladeshi. That translated into sweeter dishes than other regions, lots of sweet yoghurt, raisins, and sweeter sauces. The hot dishes are very hot, but everything is a bit on the sweet side. There is very little of the pungent cumin taste that marks the Indian food served in other cities. Personally, I love the flavour at Darbar. 2. The ambiance is dated, particularly the carpet which looks like it hasn't been changed since the 70s. Curry Original downtown has the best in ambiance and decor, but the food at Darbar is much more to my liking. 3. The wait staff are all southeast Asian and sometimes there's a communication barrier. I've never had any problems, but I have seen some customers struggle a bit. So there you have it. With a spruce-up and a new carpet, I think Darbar would easily hit 5 stars in just about anyone's book. As a final note, the naan is absolutely awesome. So try Darbar; don't let the funky decor hold you back from checking out one of the best Indian restaurants in Eastern Ontario! read more

Overall: not great, but not terrible. I'm not from here and was in the mood for some Indian food - so, off a friends recommendation, we tried "Darbar". We ordered: Chana Masala, Butter chicken, Aloo Gobi, naan, and rice. The Chana masala was certainly a low point; it tasted strongly of vinegar and lacked the texture and consistency one would hopefully find. The butter chicken was interesting - It was an unorthodox curry. Rather than the typical tomato based cream sauce, it was a yellow cream sauce - tasting of sweet corn. However, it wasn't bad; it was just unexpected. The Aloo gobi was lacklustre. Nothing special at all. It seemed a little re-heated from either lunch or a precious dinner service. The naan was quite good, but the rice was nothing special. Will I be returning? Only if none of the other Indian options in Kingston are available. read more

Darbar is an out of body, godly experience that I would highly recommend to anyone who wants to truly live life to the fullest. Everything about the restaurant from the staff, to the environment and the food, is deliciously delightful. Darbar has become a staple of my diet and would consider their Butter Chicken a food group in and of itself. If you have a date you need to impress with sensuous food or are just looking for a place to satisfy that Indian hunger pang; this is the place for you. Very impressed with Darbar - excellent service, ambience and atmosphere is wonderful, decor has definitely been updated since the previous reviews (though it might not seem like it from the outside). The food came very fast, which was nice, and was presented so beautifully. My curry was more sweet than hot, and my friends commented that their food was more on the savoury/sweet end of the spectrum as well - personally I prefer this but it's very much an individual preference thing. Terrible food. Pilau rice tastes like dish soap and the madras tastes like vinegar. Hands down the worst Indian food I've had. Portions were generous, I will say that, but the food was horrible. Servers were rude, and parking non existent. read more

There are a lot of good Indian restaurants in Kingston and this is not the flashiest but it is certainly the best.

I have been coming to this restaurant since it opened many years ago and have never been disappointed.The service has always been excellent. They have a wonderful daily lunch special, appetizers like the Onion Bhaji are also great and it is the only restaurant in town I would trust to make me a lamb korma. I was looking for some delivery service in Kingston past 9pm in the middle of the week... which seem hard to find for a girl from Toronto. I called Darbar restaurant and the guy was rather vague on the price. I will give them credit that 15 minutes they were at my hotel room. But the food...I've order some butter chicken, darbar rice and a naam bread. I've never been so disappointed with Indian food before. The butter chicken was really oily and REALLY mild, no taste. Same as the rice. I could have cook something better. The only good thing was the naam bread which was really good and the cute delivery boy. I would not recommend it read more

The paneer is awesome! As an Indian, I missed having the real stuff until I tried it out. The folks here are friendly, their serving sizes are generous, and they're very very reasonably priced. (Queen's students have a discount too!) And that paneer is definitely made there- it's just so soft while also being crumbly (as opposed to the solid, rubbery texture when it's bought/processed). The food might be good but we never had a chance to try it. My friend and went in one recent afternoon and we were greeted by a nice lady who was about to seat us when a gentlemen came out and said they were closed for lunch. So we left hungry and wondering why the heck they would turn away customers standing on their restaurant. If you are closed, put up a sign and lock the door.I guess I'll never get to taste the food because next time I'm going to Curry Original. read more

This was the worst experience ever. Reached the place at 8pm after making reservations for 10 ppl. The server took our order, started bringing in food that looked and tasted bland in every way. 45 mins in and we did not get the rice or the yogurt to go with the food. Because the rice did not come, everyone nibbled on the bread. This basically was the reason why we needed more bread. So we called the server again to add to our order a few more naan breads. He rudely said "no more naan.. Kitchen is closed at 9." The cooks apparently left while people were still eating. They did not have the normal courtesy to say we are closing the kitchen would you like to add anything to your order before we do... I have eaten at many restaurants all over the world but this was one of my worst experiences in service as well as taste, quality and quantity of food. The customer service was rude, with a bad attitude, no apologies were done even knowing that the customers were ,eat hungry and upset. The information given about closing st 9pm was also wrong. In my next post I will put the timing on the door of the restaurant showing that the timing for the Sunday was I fact 9:30 and not 9pm. Overall. Horrible experience. Going to also do a write up to the owners about the manager, server and chefs in the place. All had very wrong work ethics. Made it very disappointing to know that such places still are in business. read more
