My wife and I went to Destin for our vacation. My made plenty of preparations for us. Let me say first that we came from Roanoke Va. I googled almost all the shops up and down Harbor St. I read reviewes and looked at tons of art. I kept coming back to Custom Concepts, what drew me in outside of the art that I saw was the the aftercare that they provided on site, spoke volumes-to me because it is certainly true. I had so many SO many friends to tell me what I needed to do. I called once I had to leaves a message, I also sent a email. I was emailed back and I was called by Jai who is amazing to work with. She was very informative and so easy to talk with, and let me not forget professional in a way that was friendly, she never lost sight that she was working even though we were all enjoying each other's company. I discussed with Jay over the phone what I wanted and who I wanted to my art. This was for both my wife and I. I set up my consultation date. I was called for a consult a day early because Terry wanted to get a feel of what we wanted. While talking to him the artist that I really wanted, I was told that he was not going to be there due to his birthday. Well he just happened to stop by while I was there. Yay... now there was the one hiccup that almost made the whole appointment go south! Someone there changed my appointment time. You know if I made an appointment 3 weeks out I know when it is. So Jai looks at the time and say we have you down for 3:00.. stop punk the breaks no it's at 1:30 and I told TERRY it was at 1:30 when he said to us I think it's 2:30. Nope it's 1:30. That all of the was going south really fast with my wife. I asked is Mike here, because Terry was the artist but wasn't there yet. Ok here is the best part Mike from Atlanta is new to Custom Concept but he has over 20 years experience in the art. I wanted him anyway as I said earlier just from looking at his work on his Instagram page. I have the the Ankh which is designed in many designs many of them. I wanted the Ankh which was the most Original form. I searched until I found the exact one that I wanted. He drew it exactly as I showed him and the placement is perfect. Mike knew that I was nervous, he talked for a while to calm my nerves and it worked like a charm. Yeah I was a solider.. Mike wore gloves, his room was very very clean as well as the shop. Nick was welcoming and informative. He looked at the design, went over the entire process with us, and even offered thoughts and advice. When I explained that I was nervous, he told me to bring chocolate, pop, and Gatorade as it would help with maintaining blood sugar levels during the process. Nick even recommended that I go first since I was nervous and my wife is tougher than I am. He made it a breeze! Friendly, very welcoming and professional environment, it almost felt like I was at doctor's office:) My tattoo artist was Terry and with this being my first tattoo, I was watching his every move. I had my husband with me and we all talked during the whole process, and Terry just kept changing his gloves and washing his hands after everytime he touched something, you could tell that safety just comes automatically for him. There is a paperwork you have to fill out and initial some statements that made me realize some of the negative comments are not true. I was being very picky and even changed my idea, and really thought Terry's going to have nightmares about me, but again-he was very friendly, professional and helpful. I've read an old comment about the shop being dark and dirty-NOT TRUE! As I said, specially in the room I was tattoed, there is so much light, it would probably wake up a dead person. The young lady that works there is so welcoming and warm and friendly, it's just a nice place. I scoured the Internet for quite a while before deciding on this tattoo shop. I really liked Chris's work so I took a trip down and asked to get an appointment. Originally I spoke with Terry (the owner). He wanted to do the tattoo himself but I was dead set on Chris. Unfortunately, Chris wasn't available for over a month. So I put $40 down and waited. Just over a month later I showed up for my appointment and brought in some pictures of what I wanted. Chris immediately started asking me who scheduled this appointment. I told him Terry...he told me Terry said he didn't. Whatever. Fine. He then let's me explain to him what I was looking for in my tattoo. After barely paying attention to what I had to say (he was drawing up another tattoo while I spoke) he then went on to tell me how he is a single guy...they have other artists who need the work...He has plenty of work at the moment and there are others who need it more...THEN he finally tells me that I was giving him too much guidance on the tattoo and that he didn't want to do it (Very arrogant about his work). So he refers me to another artist named Jay. I met him that same day. He was super laid back, had some pretty great tattoos, and had a great attitude. I liked him so I scheduled an appointment for a week later. That comes around and I go back to see the tattoo that he drew up. Unfortunately, it wasn't what I wanted...not the style I was looking for. SO, we reschedule the appointment for a week and a half later and he agrees to redraw the tattoo after telling me "this one snuck up on him." I showed up to the third appointment and waited for him to come around. He walks up only to tell me that he didn't have a chance to redraw the tattoo...and that there was a scheduling issue. His exact words were, "we have a new 18 year old girl working up front who sucks, she is about to get fired" So I kindly told him that I was tired of getting the runaround and that I was going to look elsewhere. He DID take the time to draw the first tattoo, so I did't ask for my money back. It seems like they need a little more experience working with customers. To me, it felt like they are only use to doing simple upfront tattoos for people who are here on vacation. I came in with a clear idea of what I wanted and got tossed around from artist to artist. I had to wait over two months just to end up with a guy who didn't even take the time to draw up the second draft. Needless to say I was disappointed. My point, I'm not saying they don't have great artists...their work looks amazing. I'm just saying they can clearly use some work with their customer relations and scheduling. It seemed to me like they were more interested in making a quick buck off of a tourist rather than investing a good amount of time into a customer that could have easily become a regular. Plus, Chris definitely needs to work on his attitude. I shouldn't have waited for an entire month just to get pawned off on another artist. I really wish things had gone better. Both my friends were very excited about their new ink ideas but Josh managed to leave one of them crying and the other one very upset. The tattoos were very simple. If you care about what you'll be wearing on your body for the rest of your life, Josh is probably not your best choice. He was also very impatient and got upset about the placing of my friend's tattoo. All in all a very bad experience. read more

Yon should try this place out! I had the best experience with Jay! He was able to turn my idea into a great design. And a very big plus was he was willing to hear critiques on the tattoo and made great adjustments to give me exactly what I wanted. I've been to other places where they want to make it more "their tattoo" so it was really refreshing when I met with Jay. He is a very clean and confident artist. I contacted Custom Concepts via email & FB ahead of my trip to FL to get a quote from a specific artist and was told the artist was off and I would hear back soon as they had definite openings during the time frame I will be there. I was never told they don't give quotes over the phone or internet. I sent them a message today to touch base as I had yet to hear back and all I got were multiple snarky rude responses. The person on the other end of the conversation accused me of expecting them to drop what they were doing to get me in on a holiday weekend which was totally not the case since I wasn't looking for an appt. over the 4th of July weekend. Now all of a sudden they are booked 7/9-7/15. I'm going to have to raise the BS flag on that one. I'm sure they have great artists but their customer service is lacking in a big way! Terry pierced my nose back in September. My husband and I were in town on vacation. We were unsure when we first drove up into the parking lot and thought the store located next to Custom Concepts was connected to and a part of the tattoo shop. We went on into the tattoo studio and were glad to find that the suite next to his shop had no affiliation with his business. The studio was clean and the visiting tattoo artist was friendly and helpful while we waited for my turn. Terry explained how the process would work and answered all my questions to make sure I was comfortable with going ahead. The piercing room was clean and all the supplies were very organized. Terry was very professional with how he presented himself and his business but most importantly the way he insured my health safety. He washed hands and arms then wore a mask and gloves. The set to pierce my nose with was a new disposable sterile pack. He made sure my nose was cleaned and that I was relaxed and comfortable before he began. He worked fast but you could tell he was experienced in the art of piercing. I have had other piercings to compare this to. My husband and I almost drove off when we saw the business next door that is clearly selling drug paraphernalia and gives the area a "scummy" look but I am so glad we went on into the tattoo studio and did business with Terry. If we lived in town I would highly recommend him to friends. If you are local or visiting like we were, go see Terry and his staff and you won't be disappointed. read more
