I love this place. Dr. Murphy and Kevork are both absolutely professional, knowledgeable, and thorough. I would continue going to Custom Eyes just for those qualities, but they also happen to be two of the nicest people I've encountered since moving to Boston almost 2 years ago. Kevork spent a lot of time helping me pick out the first glasses frames I've ever had that I really liked (and I get compliments for them all the time). And just recently, I was having trouble with my contacts and they squeezed me in for a check up on the same day I called. It turned out that I needed to switch to a different brand and they swapped all of my unopened boxes (within a couple of days) and didn't charge me a thing for the visit or the exchange. I had a few left in a box I had already opened and they even gave me samples to make up for those. I can't recommend Custom Eyes highly enough, they're terrific! read more

In short, I wholeheartedly recommend Custom Eyes. For the past year I'd lived with contact lenses that, despite my former optometrist's blatant disregard to my concerns, only contributed by my already dry eyes -- in general, by 3 PM of any given work day I'd struggle with the 'Gosh-I-can't-wait-to-get-home-to-RIP-THESE-LENSES-OFF-MY-FACE' desire. Dr. Murphy attentively listened to my concerns. She evaluated the eye dryness, and made lens recommendations based on availability, price, and suitability. While the first prescription wasn't quite right, she was happy to adjust the strength to match that of my former script. She was quite welcoming, and never did I feel intimidated while in the chair. Price was excellent -- with my insurance, the contact lens exam came to $50 plus a $10 copay, for a grand total of $60. I was not charged any additional visit fees for the follow-up. Parking in this area can be a little tricky during the week, but there's always the Central red line stop all of a half block away. The waiting room is a little small with three chairs lined side by side by side, so there isn't much room. My wait was short, however. Conclusion: Excellent! I first went to this office because of the location (it was very close to my work), and the hours (they are open until 7:30, and I was working late). The office is very clean and organized. They greet you as soon as you enter the office- you are never ignored. I was very happy having my eye exam done here- Dr. Murphy is very professional and she even saw me on short notice when my eye was bothering me. Kevork is also very helpful. I have purchased contact lenses from him twice now, and each time, he makes sure I get a rebate form so that I can minimize my payment. Custom Eyes provided my wife the best shopping experience for eye glasses! It is a family run business and the staff is kind and knowledgeable. Their location is a block from the Central Square T stop. Conveniently, my wife was able to get an eye exam and purchase a pair of glasses on the same day. They even gave her a discounted price on the frames! We had previously tried online stores like Warby Parker, but we found nothing substitutes for the personal touch we found at Custom Eyes. Highly recommended! Be sure to ask for John who guided my wife through a whirlwind of styles and fashions. He was very knowledgeable and was able to articulate why a particular frame did or did not agree with specific facial features. He was very personable and encouraging. He helped us narrow our search to 3 frames before we made our final decision. Choosing a style can be very challenging and John helped us overcome any indecision we had. This place is not bad. I did end up paying over $600 dollars for hard contacts, a new pair of glasses and 2 boxes of just-in-case daily soft contacts and that kind of bill always hurts. I always had to wait quite a while even though I had appointments and they have a pretty small frame selection. It would be convenient to keep coming here and although I didn't hate my experience, I am definitely shopping around for next year's eye appointment. It just didn't feel like this place was a very good value. In fact it felt like the prices drastically changed depending on the customer. I know businesses always give discounts to their loyal customers and friends, but it was just awkward to be in line and hear the guy at the counter charge the person in front of me a lump sum of $170 (Without insurance) for the exam, lenses and frames, then I'm next and it's $335 for my exam, lenses and frames with insurance... read more

What an awful experience! I decided to try out Custom Eyes after seeing all the positive yelp reviews. They were very welcoming when I first got there and decided to do an eye exam and contacts exam. I ordered new lenses for my glasses, which were a bit pricey, but not too bad. After receiving my glasses I felt the prescription was too strong and called to discuss my options. I was told I would be called back several times and wasn't able to get a hold of the manager or the optometrist for almost a week. They fixed my lenses but gave me a bit of guilt trip, telling me how they were losing money fixing my lenses. Anyways, a month later I decided I was ready to buy some contacts. I called, made an order since they were out of stock, and was told I could come in the next day. Every time I went in or called to see if they were in stock, they weren't. After a month or so, I found another local store that was cheaper and just needed my prescription from Custom Eyes. I called in advance and asked if I could come pick it up and was told that I could come in anytime. I got to the store about 10 minutes before close and asked if I could get my prescription. The man who was helping me (not the manager) looked around for a bit and told me that he couldn't give me my contact fitting because the prescription was not finalized. How wasn't it finalized almost 3 months after the fact?!?! I told him I would wait for the optometrist to come out so she could help me. He told me that the store was closing. Luckily, Dr. Murphy came out and fixed my prescription. Before giving it to me, she informed me that I had a $30 charge left that my insurance didn't cover. I found this a bit surprising, not because I have an issue paying the $30, but because no one had made an attempt to call, mail, email, or even tell me the numerous other times I came or called in. I told her that I could call in the next day to pay the fee or mail it in because I didn't have cash on me. She said she couldn't give me the prescription until I paid. I told her I would go ask my friend who was sitting in the car for the money and be back in a minute. The man working the register interrupted to tell me that the store was closed (3 minutes before closing) and that it was too late. After expressing my frustration about what had happened, Dr. Murphy said it was alright for me to get the money and pay now even though the rude man insisted that he was off and wanted to go home. I definitely would give this 1 star if it wasn't for Dr. Murphy. Although she's ok, the rest of the store experience is so awful that I highly recommend looking for another shop. read more

boo on this shop! i have eye insurance (VSP), but the owner asked ME to submit my receipt directly to VSP. i did this, and was reimbursed at the out-of-network rate (~$98), instead of the in-network-rate ($200+) that i should have received. after talking with VSP, i went back to the shop to ask the ownet to submit the bill directly. he had all sorts of excuses for not wanting doing this (including, "i will take a loss"), and even trying to place the blame on me for this snaf-u (stating, "i told you that you would not be reimbursed in full if you submit the claim," umm, NO you didn't). anyways, long story short, he refunded most (not all) of my money and i left without my glasses. morale: 1) have the shop DIRECTLY submit insurance. do not let him tell you that you can submit it yourself. 2) go somewhere else more ethical. read more

Dr. Murphy is very nice and professional. My issue is with my glasses. I went back twice and finally gave up, so I essentially just tossed $300 away. The first pair caused me to see double, the second pair wasn't right either, and the last pair didn't have the amber tint. I don't know why it was such a problem. With my poor eyesight and confusing insurance situation, Custom Eyes was overwhelmingly recommended to me by my fellow Yelpers. I have been going to eye doctors since I was born; I had these awesome pink framed glasses when I was 5, and graduated to bifocals when I was 11. Since looking like a granny wasn't popular in high school, I got my first pair of contact lenses after the 8th grade and haven't looked back. Now, I have contacts, glasses to wear when I'm not wearing contacts, and glasses to wear when I am wearing contacts. Confusing enough yet? This, plus the fact that my eyes are genetically doomed to get worse no matter what I do, I always dread going to a new doctor, and having to explain all this time and time again. However, Custom Eyes was like a dream come true. I made an appointment for a Saturday afternoon to have an eye exam and a contact lens fitting done. I arrived about 15 minutes early, and was told that they were running about 30 minutes late. I had brought a book, but the staff is really friendly and easy to talk to. From all the people coming in and out, it was clear that they really made an effort to get to know their customers. Custom Eyes has one optometrist, Dr. Kathleen Murphy, who clearly knows what she's doing. She is really efficient at performing the eye exam and fittings, which can be painful in the hands of someone inexperienced. Thankfully she is not, and more so she is good at explaining what she is doing and why. She gave me several pairs of contact lenses to try out, and I came back in a week to pick one and settle on a prescription. You can order contact lenses here, but I found a cheaper price online. Wish I didn't have to write this. I purchased a nice set of frames a year ago from Custom Eyes. Last month the paint on my frames started to peel causing enough irritation that I cannot use my glasses anymore. I first came to Custom Eyes about 8 years ago, as a newbie to glasses. I had no idea what I needed, and the staff were so helpful. Dr. Murphy is friendly and efficient, and Kevork and John are two of the nicest people I've ever met. They recognize every patient who walks in and chat with them as if they're old friends (even, in my case, when it's been years between appointments). I would give it zero stars if I could. They have horrible money making practices. I have worn contact lenses for the last 22 years and I was charged $70 for my first 'visit' as a new lens user!! Then I (should not have) ordered my lenses through them after confirming with them that they are fully covered under my insurance plan (Davis vision) which they said were. When I went to pick them up, I was charged $15 copay under some wierd fee name as my plan clearly states 'no co-pay'. I am sure many of you will trust other (and there are many) reviewers over me. I don't know how they have managed to get this high of a rating on Yelp. Give them a try for sure if you wish. Just be sure to be very clear and upfront about charges. read more

Being an admitted fan of Custom Eyes, I would like to provide some clarification about Dr. Murphy's qualification as referenced in another review. She is a licensed doctor of optometry. As such she holds a degree and license under which auspices she can diagnose vision acuity problems, prescribe corrective lenses and contacts, perform eye testing including testing for diseases of the eye and conditions, and prescribe certain medications. This degree requires four years of training at an optometry school, preceded by 3 or more years of college. Optometrists are not medical doctors. An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who along with college completes an additional 8 years of medical training. It is they, in addition to the services an optometrists provides, who can treat all eye diseases and prescribe any necessary medications, perform eye surgery and may be involved with scientific research on causes and cures for eye disease and vision disorders. So please, set your sights accordingly. read more

I've had three experiences here-- 1. My own. A few years ago, I got an eye exam with Dr. Murphy, but took the prescription and ordered glasses elsewhere. Once I got the glasses, I realized that the prescription was wrong-- I never wear the glasses, they make me dizzy. (I wear my old ones). I couldn't take the glasses back, of course. 2. My sister. She came to Custom Eyes a few years later and ordered contacts. She had me pick them up (she lives in the suburbs). When I took them to her, she realized that they ordered the wrong ones-- they ordered her contacts in her name, with my prescription (which was TWO years old at that point). I had to take them back, have them re-order the right ones, and pick them up again. 3. My boyfriend. I don't know why I took him here, after all the previous drama. But this place is down the street from me, so seemingly convenient. He did the eye exam last year (2012) with Dr. Murphy, and same as me, got the glasses and they made him dizzy. It was the wrong prescription. But at least he ordered the glasses from Custom Eyes, so they corrected the prescription and then re-did the glasses for free. I would stay away. They are really nice people at Custom Eyes, but a bit disorganized. Or if you intend to order glasses, get them there so they can fix the prescription if it is off. For myself, I will never be going back to Custom Eyes. read more

I don't know if they recently changed their policy, but I just called and they said the contact lens fitting now costs $95 (as of today 12/8/15). They also said it was cosmetic, so insurance can not cover it. I'm not sure if I was given wrong information, but that seems wrong. My vision benefit states that it can include the contact lens fitting with a co-pay, so it sounds like Custom Eyes is making themselves an exception to this. (They are, in fact, listed as an in-network provider by my insurance, and they do accept insurance for the eye exam.) I am looking into other optometrists now, as this can be a sizable cost difference, and I also find it misleading that they claim the contact lens fitting is a "cosmetic" procedure that the insurance doesn't cover (as this is clearly false). read more

It all started on Halloween, when my best friend borrowed my glasses to go with her costume. From that night it was determined she needed glasses with a prescription close to mine. I found Custom Eyes on yelp, called to ensure they accepted both Cigna and Harvard Pilgrim (which they do) and we called for an appointment. I have had glasses for about three years, and my roommate was going to the eye people for the first time. This is where it gets a little crazy. Our apts were on the same day, I went first to have my eyes examined, very professional and fast. Super quick, then my best went in... I heard them chatting for a bit then it went very very quiet. I knocked on the door, I didn't know it was possible, but she passed out during an eye exam. I walked in and there she was head in between her legs. My words were "what did you do to her?" Turns out, it happens a lot. The crazy blue light that checks for glaucoma (spelling may be off there) freaked out her senses and boom boom boom, Carly was down... They were soooo professional and although she was super embarrassed, they comforted her entirely. Definitely a day that will be remembered for the rest of our lives. So I'm a bit of a glasses whore and purchased some amazing Prada prescription sunglasses! My best got really cute and very well priced Candies. For years, my friend would always jokingly wear my glasses because (and I can't deny it) he thought he looked good in them. He even considered getting non-prescription glasses because he liked wearing them so much. Imagine how excited he was when he discovered he suddenly couldn't read street signs very well! He and I have the same doctor and the selection there is terrible. So, I did some (Yelp) research to find the best place for me to take him to help him pick out his first pair. Seeing Custom Eyes had pretty good reviews, I figured we would start there. Right off the bat, I felt comfortable in the neat, well-kept, organized and classy environment. Not to mention, very well-lit. You'd be surprised how many ophthalmology offices I've been in that were poorly lit and looked like someone put a desk in a glasses storage closet.. oh, the irony. The man in charge, Kevork, was extremely helpful and - as someone stated before - was not at all pushy. I really hate pushy. Between the two of us, we were able to find my friend the best and most appropriate frames for his look and type: a pair nearly identical to mine. To top off the experience, he fit the frames right there in under 10 minutes. In the 14 years I've had glasses, never once was I able to walk out of an office with my glasses after picking out frames. I thought that was pretty kick ass. The next time I need glasses, I am definitely going to Custom Eyes. Dr Murphy was fine but the rest of the staff is horrible. I was proposed an insurance on scratches that I attempted to use unsuccessfully and was coldly told by the man behind the counter that Davis Vision was horrible, "they changed their contract in the middle of it". Then as I tried to take my next appointment, the same guy did not want to check when would the next possible date be, according to Davis vision or to Blue Cross Blue Shield plans. Aside from the mediocre professionalism I received from the Dr. Kathleen Murphy (seriously, I had to remind her that she didn't even do my dilation, "oops" she says. Whatever about her. The licensed Optician is Kevork Tinkjian and he is rude and NOT PROFESSIONAL at all. NOTE: I had to sign up for Yelp just so that I can put a WARNING sign on this place for others - PLEASE DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR MONEY because of the terrible customer service and maltreatment they give people. The same horrible customer service and lack of appreciation for their customers happened to me and my close friend - and NOT at the same time, we didn't even know that we were going to the same place AT ALL! we were just bitching about our eye doctors office one day and come to find out it was the same eye place we were going CUSTOM EYES!!! OMG, what are the odds? So, here is how the story goes with me: I went it there to get my eye exam with Kathleen and then I said I wanted to LOOK at purchasing frames (and of course the lenses). I THOUGHT that I just paid for my prescriptions (frames and contact lenses) and that was that. I then leave without any knowledge of what was going to happen the next day. I get a call the next day from Kevork Tinkjian stating that my glasses are ready for pick up... AND I AM LIKE WHAT? I then dig in my bag and find the receive I paid for yesterday and I DID pay for not ONLY my eye exam prescriptions BUT there was also a $72 charge for frames too! (that was my fault for not paying attention to the receipt but it was after work and I was just trying to get home to my bed!!) SO, I was like NO, I don't want those frames/glasses (that I was looking at yesterday) because I TOLD HIM if I did then I would be back to pick them out and then pay for them - but he assumed I was going to come back there SO ran my card anyways and also processed them for me. NOT GOING DOWN LIKE THAT! Completely UNACCEPTABLE! His reply on the phone was this: Well you said you were going to come back another time to get them anyways right? He then proceeded to argue back and forth with me and told me that he didn't work for free and that he had children that he has to feed and that it costs money to make the lenses for the frames and that his services are not for free and that he has bills and yadddah yaddahhh yaddddaaahhh yadddaaahhhh, WHY IS IT NECESSARY FOR HIM TO TELL ME ANY OF THAT? Everyone has financial problems and bills and children and rent, etc. THAT IS NOT MY PROBLEM!! I even apologized for any confusions that may have been caused on my part. I even thought that this could have been caused by something I said or did but I told him that I would not be coming to pick up those glasses and I want my refund asap! (which he did eventually give to me, but what a hassle. it is my moneyyyy!!!) and He just continued to BITCH and tried to put a guilt trip on me about him wasting his time and how he has a family to take care of and all this other STUFF that YOU DO NOT SAY TO A CUSTOMER!! and basically bitching about me NOT wanting SOMETHING THAT I DID NOT WANT!! what is wrong with people these days???? such a sleezyyyy guy and I do NOT suggest them to ANYONE! DO NOT GO THERE! For them to treat customers with disrespect like that especially since customer service is actually the #1 thing that makes people continue to go back to the same place is a shame. The owner, sales associate and the optometrist were all extremely attentive and friendly. The optometrist was thorough and put me at ease. The shop itself has plenty of frame to choose from and many were on sale with my insurance. This is worst place ever - Big CROOKS. The guy behind the counter (Krevor) is a sweet talker - BUT scams people. Here is the story : - I show up for an appointment on time and asked to wait for 20 minutes before the eye exam. The doctor gives me trial lenses which are off by (0.5 - 1.0) - Since these lenses were meant for trail obviously they did not have the exact fit. I tried them on for couple of days and the vision was blurry. She then puts in an order for my actual lenses with the correct prescription - When I picked them up the doctor assured me that if there is any vision problem - Get the new lenses back and we will refit you, So turns out that the vision is still not clear with the new ones - I take them back to Mr. Smooth talker the very next day - He refuses to take the lenses back - since the box was opened - HOW ARE YOU SUPPOSE TO TRY THE LENSES W/O OPENING THEM ? ISN'T THIS THE FIRST THING THEY SHOULD KNOW. IF YOU ARE GIVING A TRIAL LENS OUT MAKE SURE - IT IS RIGHT PRESCRIPTION IF NOT AT LEAST MAKE THE NEW LENSES CORRECT. I MEAN HOW HARD IS IT ??? So KREVOR offers me to give a discount on future purchases. He said - I'm sorry the lenses did not fit you properly - We can order new lenses but you will have to pay out of POCKET for them - I can discount the price. I'm not asking for a return policy - BUT this is a OUTRIGHT SCAM. I will be reporting them to Better Business Bureau. PLEASE STAY AWAY from CUSTOM EYES!!! THEY WILL WANT YOU TO EXCEED THE AMOUNT THAT YOUR INSURANCE COVERS - SO THAT THEY CAN POCKET THE EXTRA . Horrible service from the optician/manager (kevork?). The optician seems passive aggressive - they ignore low paying customers and they also charge random copays (almost seems "made up"), while politely talking the customers into paying. I wanted to purchase glasses and I was given 5 different values for the copay/price throughout different conversations, which I thought was unprofessional. At no time where these values looked up anywhere, but kevork just randomly kept telling me different numbers whenever I called him to check. Anyway, so I finally called the insurance office to check whether what kevork was saying was true but turns out there were a lot of things wrong in what I was told. I feel that it was all part of a money making scheme. I just didn't want to feel this cheated at an eye doctor's place. Also, the same day I opted not to take the glasses and cancel my order for randomly being charged another copay, another individual walked in who was also frustrated about her added copay and canceled her order to go somewhere else too. I generally feel uncomfortable writing reviews online, but after seeing that two of us had gone through this, I wanted others to be warned of the bad service. Please do not get fooled by the "polite" way the manager/optician will ask you to pay more. I also want to add that the doctor working here is knowledgeable and nice. I am deeply sad that because of the behavior from the optician/manager, who essentially runs the whole place and cannot be avoided, I do not want to continue being a customer. read more

Dr. Kathleen Murphy and store owner Kevork Tinkjian are two amazing people. They are extremely knowledgeable about optometry and everything you need to know to get the best pair of glasses or contact lenses for your vision needs. They work together doing everything to run this store, from answering the phone and dealing with the customers who come in with casual questions. They both also understand insurance benefits, so ask them about what your insurance covers. I didn't know I received a 35% discount on frames and some lens coverage through Tufts yet they both looked that up with no problem for me. The eye exam administered to me by Dr. Murphy was the most thorough one I have ever received. She explained what she was doing, what she needed from me during the exam (I've had doctors just do things, expecting me to know what to do), and the changes that had occurred in my vision so I understood. It was extremely helpful to know what is happening to my eyes, especially since I have had poor vision since I was in second grade. Perhaps I also tried on just about every pair of glasses in the Custom Eyes store. As this would be my first pair of new frames in eight years, selecting a new pair was a very big decision for me since I obviously change frames so infrequently and really value how the look frames have on my face. It's a part of me. After displaying a significant amount of indecision, Dr. Murphy spent at least half an hour with me looking at frames and helping me select ones I like based on how they were shaped, what I wanted, and how they looked on my face. With basic lenses in, I had trouble seeing what many frames actually looked like on my face! Having some help understanding what looked good on my face was really appreciated. Kevork, much to my surprise, was able to get my new Kate Spade (ooooh la la) frames back the next day with new lenses in them. He does adjustment work and lens cutting in the shop (I think). Both Kevork and Dr. Murphy were helpful ensuring the fit and look of glasses was right for me. I am really happy with the whole experience. When I came to pick the glasses up I realized I didn't have a quarter for the meter, only an assortment of nearly every coin ever made, yet Kevork made no hesitation in giving me quarters to ensure I did not get a ticket. The small things matter! Custom Eyes is the place to go. I will definitely be back for my annual check up and for any other glasses needs I have. Hands down the best eye doctor I've ever been to. The staff are incredibly friendly and treat you like you've been a customer for decades. Every time I call the shop I'm greeted by name, and the customer service has been fantastic. Parking can be tough, but the shop's about a 1-2 minute walk from the Central T stop. Perhaps Custom Eyes is a little expensive, but it is a small local business. They more than make up for it with the customer service. If your budget is tight, then maybe you should go elsewhere, but it is a terrific neighborhood shop and a good place to go if you need a quick fix for some busted glasses. When I called Custom Eyes to set up an appointment, I hadn't yet looked at the Yelp reviews. I was pleased to find out they were highly recommended and that I had made a good choice. Through my own experience there, I can see why they are so highly recommended. I encountered three of the staff and they were extremely helpful, very friendly and definitely seemed to have my best interest in mind. They even helped me save some money by recommending one brand of contact lens over the other (both very reputable, one just happened to have a rebate!) Their selection of eyeglasses seemed extensive and they are open six days a week, including at least a few evenings and are very close to the T if you don't live in the neighborhood. Overall, a good experience! Looks like I found a new eye doctor! read more

This review applies to the store owner not Dr. Murphy. He seemed friendly at first but then charged twice for services rendered (he charged me and the insurance company and kept quiet until I called him asking for a refund). He also refused to give me the additional 15%-20% discount which I was guaranteed by my vision insurance (on my unfortunately pricey daily disposable lens)... he claimed that since he gave me some mail-in-rebate forms he was not obligated to provide the discount required by the insurance company. Also, he went so far as to say that if he gave me the insurance mandated discount, he would NOT give me the rebate forms. How's that for customer service? I went there to support a small business but came out vowing never to go back! And just to reiterate, this review does NOT apply to Dr. Murphy, who I give a thumbs up to. She was pleasant and though she was running a bit behind when I went for my eye exam, gave a sincere apology. read more
