This is a review for Dr. White. I'm a former patient, and now that I've moved out of the area I really appreciate his competence. I have, I guess, a more complicated prescription: I have convergence insufficiency, and I like to wear contacts plus glasses with prism, but I also like to have the option to wear just glasses. Dr White made this so easy. He's the one who first suggested the prism, which is a huge help for me, and he wrote my several different prescriptions each year like it was no big deal. He made it so easy I thought this was pretty simple, standard stuff. Apparently not! My new optometrist, uh, to put it politely, does not seem to have Dr. White's skill or understanding of prism in glasses. I now realize Dr. White really knew his stuff, which made my optometrist visits a lot easier! read more

Probably one of the worst costumer services I've ever experienced! I initially thought from the high rating that this would be a good place for my annual check-up. Not only did I get repetitive calls before my appointment. As soon as I completed my check-up it, I hadn't heard from them for weeks about my contact order. When I finally did call (2 weeks later), they still have not received it. I would have been fine if they just told be a straight answer such as forgetting to put it in, but they were very vague about the whole situation. It looks like I am not the only one. There are other ordering cases. I will not be going back. They are not very organized nor very responsive after they get your money. read more

My elderly mother accidentally dropped her glasses on the floor and broke the frames. She was in rehab at the time and really needed the glasses in order to see well enough to participate in her physical therapy sessions. Hoping for a stroke of luck, I went into central square eye care looking to replace the frames fast. My boyfriend has gotten great service and care at this place for years. The optician ( I feel horrible that I forgot his name. He was the bald man wearing the glasses) was amazing. I walked in, did not need an appointment, showed him the broken frames. He went over to the wall of glasses and within minutes found the frames that matched my mom's lenses, popped them out of the broken frame, popped them into the new ones, sealed them up, charged a very reasonable fee, and I was out the door in less than half an hour. The service and the care taken to help me were top notch. This man was brilliant and very knowledgeable. I highly recommend this place if you find yourself in an eye glass emergency situation and need help fast. read more

I have been going to central square eye care for over 10 years. Dr. White listens, and keeps making sure i see well (he convinced me to get progressives!). George tirelessly adjusts my glasses, fixes them when they break, and keeps track of the specific glasses frame that I like (I am very fussy about glasses on my face...they need to feel just right). They provide wonderful service and I always look forward to seeing George and Dr. White. I cannot recommend them more highly. read more

I've been seeing Dr Lewis for 20 years and she is great. I called to have someone to see my daughter and they refused to see her unless I buy glasses from them. The lady on the phone was extremely rude asking me repeatedly what insurance I have and telling me that it will be out of pocket. After telling her that I know that and usually pay out of pocket, she told me to go somewhere else. Very rude. Obviously they don't want business!!! Also, the reason I never bought my glasses there is because they have limited selection as I am very picky. read more

This is one of the places I don't mind spending a little more than what I would spend online for contacts/glasses when I can afford it. The customer service is phenomenal and I'm proud to have a business like that in my neighborhood. Kevork always remembers my name, which is crazy in itself since I've only been like 4 times. He had no problem around the store with me to show me the frames he thought would look good on me because I was clueless. I blame it on a lifetime of getting glasses at Costco from a tiny section my mom made me pick from because it was the cheapest. He also helped me out several times when I had to come in because the nose pads were hurting my nose. Even if you just need one box of contacts to tide you over while you order more online, give a place like this your business. If they took my insurance I would have gotten future pairs of glasses here too. read more

[STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE IF YOU WEAR CONTACT LENSES] After reading all the other good yelp reviews, I switched to Central Square Eye Care this year. I was able to get an appointment easily with Dr. While and he seemed to get the job done, but that's just the beginning of the nightmare. I was about to head to west coast for a conference and was running out of my contact lenses, so I asked if I can have some extra samples before I come back. Sadly he refused, saying only 5 per person and the 2 boxes that I ordered will arrive next week. (Well, back when I went to NewtonEye, there was absolutely no problem with that). While I was at the conference, my boyfriend picked up the two boxes of contact lenses for me at the store. When I got back home, I realized that instead of -4.75 and -5.50 as I was told in the store, he actually got two boxes of -5.50. I was thinking, oh that's no big deal, they must have given him the wrong box, so I called. Surprisingly the man on the phone insisted that both eyes -5.50 was on my profile and he needs to check with the doctor and give me a call back (which never happens btw). Two days later, I called again, still no progress. I had to find out my actual physical prescription, and I noticed that the even the lenses prescription were different, for contact lenses, the doctor put both of my eyes prescription as -5.50 BY MISTAKE! So I made a third call as I am desperate at that point, with the wrong prescription, I cannot order contact lenses online or from another store, the two boxes they gave me didn't really fit my eye, and I don't have any extra samples. The front desk lady this time, was nice enough to offer ordering the new box of -4.75 for me and claimed that it will be shipped to my house so I won't need to come over and pick it up and corrected my prescription file in the laptop. So I waited for a week, NO contact lenses have been shipped to my place before I made the FOURTH call. The front desk lady claimed that they actually didn't request it to ship to my house, the contact lenses are there at the front desk, I can come anytime to pick it up! The past Saturday, I showed up at the store, trying to explain that I am there to pick up the new box of my contact lenses. Guess what? They were not there!! I was actually able to talk to the doctor directly, he, however, didn't apologize at all, and request that I have to bring back the other -5.50 box of contact lenses to the new one, since every box costs money. (Well maybe think more from the perspective why the prescription was messed up in the first place instead?) And he also said, they WILL NOT provide me with an actual 90d pack of the -4.75 contact lenses, AS I ORDERED, but instead I will get couple of the doctor's trial sample lenses and I should wait for their call. I have not received a call until today, but I got an email saying the lenses are ready to pick up. Let's see how this adventure goes. At this point, I have given up on communicating with them, as I found them very disrespectful of people's time and not being responsible of their own mistakes. I kind of regret ordering contact lenses through them in the first place. I don't even want to start with how heir price is not even close to being competitive compared to walgreens or other online retailers, and how they were trying to sell me the more fancy version of the lenses that I didn't even feel comfortable in! I did it anyways back then cuz I trusted the doctor and was thinking it will be convenient just to order from them, oh my, it's such a big mistake. Seems like this is one of the places that if things go right, it's fine. But when it doesn't, don't expect them to correct it, at least not on their own. read more

Just came back from CENTRAL SQUARE EYE CARE, and it was GREAT. Dr. White was way cool, very knowledgeable and very generous with his time. Got a A1 eye exam, found a pair of very reasonably priced eye glasses and plan on going back next year. Check in and check out was a breeze and very efficient. Dr. White turned off the light in the room and was about to examine my eyes when this weird beachy song started and went on for two minutes and neither of us said anything. It sounded like the sort of music you'd hear in an 80s comedy movie when it's a transitional shot of the beach, not really showing any main characters and something zany was about to happen. Then I finally said, "What's with the beach music? Is that your examining music?" And he said, "um... I didn't turn it on. I thought that was yours." Turns out, I had set my phone alarm--which I rarely use--to remind me of the appointment and the tone was this Caribbean, marimba, steel-drum type music. I needed new frames, so he helped me out and gave me honest opinions on how they suited my oblong face. There are A LOT of fancy, Euro-architect-type frames that just aren't me [but *are* very him]. I leaned more toward the Pepsi brand frames which were like $50. I had a solo laugh about that one. But I ended up using my old frames and getting a new prescription. The guy who works the glasses department looks like the Daryl, I mean, Darill character from "Kids in the Hall" and I wondered if he heard the tiny oom-pah band and painted little tumors on people's heads. He helped me get another lens for my frames because the prescription was a little off. He also pointed to my cheapo sunglasses and told me that he could reset them for me on the spot so they balance better on my face. I had a problem with the contact lenses Dr. White gave me to try out, so he had me come in for another pair which worked out much better and didn't give me *much* guff. Dr. White is an knowledgeable, affable sort of fellow and helped me out with my odd eye concerns. Also, the office smells like fresh-baked bread in the morning cause it's next to Subway. Whee! But also smells like exhaust cause it's next to a bus stop. Gasp! read more

This place is certainly as good as it gets. Being in Central Square you don't quite expect this level of professionalism and service but here you are! My appointment was with Dr. Lewis and I must agree with everyone else here that she is calming, professional, and all around awesome. I like her super laid back demeanor and was impressed with the level of care she took while conducting my annual exam. Everyone knows how weird it is to have things in or near their eyes and she made this OK. The front staff is great and since they were a wee bit slow at the time I was completely fawned over by the staff while trying to locate new frames. In fairness my ex-roommate works here so there's that but the level of service provided to others that came in was no less spectacular so I believe it stands. The selection of frames is slightly overwhelming but great if you like variety. I tried on frames that cost waaaaay too much for me just in the spirit of trying but they also have frames that are stylish and reasonably priced. The brands include schmancy French/Japanese/Italian and most seemed worth the cost but not for me. I never felt pressured to buy anything outrageous but I was certainly given the option. In the end I opted for some that after my insurance paid up worked out to be a good deal for me. I'm actually looking forward to coming in again thanks to their professional yet friendly service. Wouldn't it be sweet if primary health care checkups and ER checkups were as efficient and pleasant as eye exams? I've been coming here for years and I always leave satisfied. I used to go to Dr. White, but when my insurance changed I switched to Dr. Lewis. They're both fantastic! Thorough eye exams, professional, and they're both great to talk to conversationally about family, education, trends in eye care and health, etc. I love Dr. Lewis! She'll always take care of you! She always ensures that you get the appropriate pair of contacts and will always recommend that you try a particular kind of contacts for at least a week before committing to buying a supply. I really appreciate this since I usually like purchasing my contacts in bulk. I also appreciate how timely her responses are to eye concerns! My current contact brand has been irritating my eyes so she recommended Acuvue dailies for me (recommendation partially based off the budget I gave her). I ended up not buying right away - I've just been wearing my glasses. Soon after my visit, an ophthalmologist friend recommended a different brand of contacts (ok, more expensive than what Dr. Lewis prescribed), but I wanted to give it a try so I called and left a message for Dr. Lewis on a day she wasn't in about whether or not the base curve of the contacts would work. The very next morning, I got a message from the receptionist to come pick up a 5 day trial pair to try the contacts to see if they were comfortable. A+ response time. Great service all around! The receptionists are always patient and friendly and will send prescriptions via email if you want to purchase glasses or contacts elsewhere. Appointments run smoothly and efficiently. I would definitely recommend this place if you're looking for an optometrist, friendly staff, and quality care! P.S. Location is very convenient whether you take the bus or train - it's literally off the Central Square T Station and located behind a bus stop. read more

I've been coming here for the last two years for my annual eye exams, and since I have (almost) perfect vision (meaning I *should* wear glasses when reading or staring at computer screens for too long, but that's neither here nor there), have never really needed to come here for anything else, except for my reading glasses. Until today. I woke up this morning with a crusty, goopy case of conjunctivitis (which I've actually had for the last three days, but who's counting?). Called out of work and then called here. Dr. Lewis was able to fit me in right away and take care of my gross, infected eyeballs, no problem! She prescribed some eye drops which are already working a million times better than the over-the-counter crap I bought at CVS, and she wants me to call her next week to let her know how I'm doing (will be out of town, or else we would've scheduled a follow-up exam). I know this all sounds very routine, but Dr. Lewis is seriously one rockin' doc. She has a very calming presence and is quite simply one of the nicest people ever. I only wish she could also be my overall primary care doctor! read more

I can't express enough how disappointed I am with this optometrist. I went in about two years ago to have an eye exam (my first in a while) and then possibly buy glasses or contacts. I was treated well, the place was clean, and the eye exam itself went fine. The problem is that he messed up on the prescription, easily the most important part of the experience! I took the script he gave me and had safety glasses (free through work) made to his specs. I put them on and immediately went cross-eyed. I took them off (couldn't see) and headed to his office to get either re-examined or check to see if maybe the glasses weren't made right. He checked my specs and they seemed fine, then gave me another brief exam. He assumed I might need bifocals, at 25 y/o and nearsighted that seemed impossible. The end result was that "[My] eyes will get used to them." Well, two years later, I use the glasses only for driving at night since I can't see well without them and haven't been able to get a new pair since. It's really odd, since my old pair done by my old optometrist are absolutely FINE, don't make me go cross-eyed, still retain depth perception, and are 10 or 12 years old. My vision at 2-2.5miles out is not quite perfect with those, everything else is fine. On top of this very big deal, frames are either very cheap or very expensive...there weren't many that were in between. Selection was also fairly limited. I forget how much the exam cost, but it seemed wildly expensive at the time. I had vision insurance and had intended on getting safety glasses made then returning for a contact fitting and buying contacts through him, but I wasn't about to shell out ANY more dough for somebody who gives me the wrong script and then tells me to deal. I've heard similar reports from a co-worker who went there, got a bad script, returned, got a completely different script, which worked. He asked why, and the doc replied "Sometimes I round up or down." I would not recommend ANYBODY go there, and will be heading elsewhere for my next exam. I really hope my glasses were a fluke and that other people aren't walking in a little nearsighted then walking out like Mr. Magoo. read more

I walked in last night just to browse and get my glasses fixed after I was abducted by aliens in front of McDonald's in Central Sq a couple of weeks ago. Those bitches broke my glasses! Anyway, I realized that I should have written a review of Central Sq Eye Care (CSEC) when I began yelp. Especially after fixing my glasses--granted i had a warranty--but they offer such services. Perhaps other eye care places do, but I'm happy to know that CSEC is near by and have high standards. I've be going to CSEC since 2005. All the glasses I've purchased here have been the best quality as they have stylish brands to chose from. I have two pairs and both are handmade: one Scandinavian and the other French made by Lafont. I don't wear contacts anymore but if I did start wearing them, I would get them here as they make sure the contacts are well adjusted for your eyes and make sure that your eyes won't dry out when using them. All and all,CSEC offers great services from types of eye wear lens (e.g. scratch protection) to what contacts are best fitting and best for your eyes. I also really like the staff--they are extremely helpful, sociable and attentive. I'll leave it up to Melissa A's review to explain the rest as it's more personable than mine. I have been coming to Central Square Eye Care for about 3 years I think? Maybe 2... I have been seeing Dr. Karen Lewis for longer - she just moved to this location 2-3 years ago. First off I have to really say what a great eye doctor Dr. Lewis is! Really. I first saw her several years ago after having a horrible experience with lens crafters - they had my prescription for glasses 2x too strong! so I was getting headaches! And they also over corrected on my contacts and had the curvature of my eye wrong so they were so uncomfortable and too strong - I couldn't wear them. When I had gone back to them - they basically said it was my fault I was too sensitive to the contacts. WHAT!?? I had been wearing contacts for about 15 years - how would I suddenly be too sensitive to them? I had enough with them and started looking around for a new eye doctor and stumbled upon Dr. Lewis. Boy am I glad I did!!! She fixed my glasses and contacts prescription right away - and what a difference.. I could see! and it wasn't uncomfortable. and oh ya - contacts no sensitivity to them - they were just fine once they fit my eye right. And she always makes sure to give you your script with all your info on it at the end of your visit (lens crafters wouldn't let me have it - and basically forced me to pay their inflated prices for contacts/glasses too since I couldn't go anywhere else without a script). You don't have to worry about that BS with Dr. Lewis - she's professional and gives you your script at your annual visit. So this new location. It's convenient if you live or work in Central Square. It's right behind the bus stop, and like a half a block from the T stop. Parking can be a nightmare, but I've always found metered spaces close by. Every time I've come here - I'm seen promptly and the staff is always really professional, friendly, and helpful. They are as good as Dr. Lewis. It's always a great experience coming here. I have now come here for several annual eye exams (latest one being yesterday), bought contact lenses through them, and also bought glasses through them. When I was trying to figure out which glasses I wanted - the guy working was so helpful. He spent a lot of time trying out different frames with me, gave advice on which ones looked good (or not so good) - measured to see which ones fit my face best etc. Oh and did I mention they carry great high-end eyewear? I LOVE the pair of funky brown Prada glasses I ended up with. They are super cute, funky and really fit my face nicely and look nice against my skin color. They had lots of European designers and I really liked the selection. Anyway, do you really want to trust your eyes to anyone else? I certainly don't! These guys know what they are doing. read more

Their Saturday hours are posted as closing at 4 PM. I drove all the way from Natick and arrived at 3:45 PM only to find their front door locked, lights off and the place completely closed, with my glasses for pick up being held hostage inside. It is not OK to close up shop early. When you have a storefront, you have to be open for the hours that you post as your business hours. That's the professional way to do business. Not going to lie, pretty upset that I'm going to have to make this trip again, all because someone decided to cut work early. read more

When I went to buy glasses a few weeks back, CustomEyez was closed. Wandering through Central Square to kill time, I found Central Square Eye Care around the corner. So I went in to shop around. The optician who helped me out was very patient and knowledgeable. He offered a variety of frames and helped me evaluate them. He even steered me away from the pricier designers to more affordable frames. "Everyone copies everyone else's designs," he noted. Literally the only thing that CustomEyez beat Central Square on was price. I felt bad, taking up the optician's time and then walking two blocks to seal the deal with Kevork. But you know I have to stack that paper. So if your insurance or lens needs make Central Square Eye Care a cheaper place than CustomEyez, I highly recommend them. I felt bad for taking up the optician's time and not buying anything. So I'm making it up to him on Yelp. That's as good as a commission, right? A glowing Yelp review? Right? read more

Dr. Lewis was great. She was easy to talk to, listened to what I was saying about my vision... and went through the exam and double checked some prescription strengths a few times just to tweak and make sure we were getting things exactly right. The staff was great, and very helpful. There is a wall full of glasses to choose from... and I'm a very picky person. They helped me look through many pairs of glasses, talk about price points, try them on, look up different colors, etc etc. I FINALLY found one pair of glasses I thought I might like, but didn't want the brown color. I was thinking maybe black would work, but was afraid that it would be too dark. No fear, they ordered in the black ones and there was no obligation for me to purchase it from them. Turns out, I was right and it was too dark for my face. I did, however, manage to find another pair I liked for my reading glasses that I was happy with, and have since gotten a number of compliments on them! I was luckily enough to be referred to Dr. White when I moved to Cambridge two years ago and I've been happy at Central Square Eye Care ever since. Their front desk staff is friendly and attentive. I get email reminders when it's time to book, so I never need to keep track myself (which is lovely!). Then, of course, there's Dr. White who is super personable and the rare doctor who can hold a conversation and is actually interested in your life. He's very thorough and always makes sure your vision is the best it can be. He changed my contact lenses type and they are the most comfortable I've ever worn! Blah experience with this optometrist. Aside from taking a pedantic tone ("That an expensive phone you've got, why don't you set yourself a remind to change your lenses.") and fumbling the insurance-covered part of my bill, Dr. White wrote me a prescription for a high-priced brand of contact lenses and advised I use a premium solution, and proceeded to try and sell me both on the spot, at ridiculous mark up.... Then he refused to revise the script for a lower-priced brand of contact lenses and played the boogie man about how my eyes needed the extra "protection" (read: cost driven advertising). In point of fact, I've spoken with optometrists before and they've candidly said contact lenses are largely the same and they're all safe (and approved by the FDA). Then his receptionist kept up the boogie man act by claiming buying contacts online was risky and those online sellers weren't to be trusted. Please! They all come in the same box, lady, whether in your office or through the mail. Clearly the optometry industry is STILL upset at online contacts sellers providing better value then they are, all these years later, and failing to adapt to this fact gracefully (like by sending prescriptions via email), upset as they are that they can't gouge their customers on scare tactics and exorbitant markups. read more

I've been back to this place for a few years at this point and they're phenomenal. I've never been here for an eye exam, but George has taken care of my lenses like a pro. After a catastrophe at LensCrafters, I came in here. I wanted to keep my current frames- I've had problems with other places pushing me to buy a new pair of frames, but there was no pressure or pushback when I said I wanted to keep my current ones, just an eagerness to make it work (which ultimately meant cutting the lenses while I waited, something not many places will do). They've always been great with giving me a realistic time expectation for when my lenses will be ready as well. The pride that George takes in his craft is unparalleled. I went to get a pair of lenses cut (my fourth or fifth pair)- it was a bit busy and the lenses ended up not being cut to his liking. I wouldn't have known the difference and it would have been easy for someone to say they were good enough, but not only did George come right out and say, "I apologize- it got busy and your lenses didn't come out to the standard I set for myself," he sent out for another pair (no cost to me) and worked with my schedule for me to get them, as I was moving away. It's rare these days to find somebody who: a. Sets such a high bar in terms of craftsmanship for themself, b. Is dedicated to the client and not their bottom line, c. Can admit when they've made a mistake, and d. Makes it right immediately and with such little inconvenience to the client. Honestly, George's craftsmanship and customer service was worth a 5 star review, but his integrity and pride in his craft is even more impressive. read more

I've been seeing the same eye doctor since I was about 10. Not only was he excellent, he has an excellent personality as well. I actually liked going to the eye doctor. Then I moved. And moved again. So now I avoided new eye doctors like the plague. Then this year, I was suddenly offered vision insurance. Seemed like a good deal. Yet I hadn't taken advantage of it. Then I finally relented and made an appointment at the boy's doctor but they ended up not taking it. Finally, my contacts nearly ran out, so I was forced to do the unavoidable and make an eye appointment. My choices were limited but I chose one. I accidentally called the wrong number, though, and ended up making an appointment with Central Square Eye Care. To embarassed to admit my mistake, I decided to go and run out of the appointment if they seemed unknowledgable. I was also armed with my eye records from the past umteen years. What a pleasant surprise! My random shot in the dark appointment ended up being great. They had some mighty big shoes to fill and they ended up filling it. Dr. Lewis was really thorough in her exam. I had given all the paperwork to her and rather than basically just giving me the same thing, she did the full exam, and did end up changing what was there ever-so-slightly because my eye sight had gotten better (which my previous eye doctor said would happen over time, oddly enough). Just her manner made me feel comfortable and like she knew what she was doing. Also, because I'm kind of flakey like that, I accidentally went in yesterday for a follow up appointment that's tomorrow. It was only a 10 minute thing but Dr. Lewis was really cool about squeezing me in since I was already there. The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the frame selection. I know many people raved about it but I didn't find it all that extensive. And I need extensive. Very few glasses look good on me. Unfortunately, the ones that did look good on me didn't fit my face because of my ultra narrow nose. But that's just me. I need a warehouse of frames or something. I'm all sorts of happy that I randomly found this place. If only I had the same luck with PCPs. read more

I came in here last week (based on yelp reviews, as usual) for a contact lens fitting/exam. I had a regular recently at Boston Eye Group but I wasn't terribly satisfied (see my review) so decided to go here. It was worth it, and it didn't even take any less time; this place is just steps from the red line and they are open late every day. The office is well run; the receptionist was warm and friendly, and other staff seemed happy to be there. I saw Dr. Geoffrey White, who was patient, honest and helpful. Even though my 7:30 appointments were his last of the day, he gave me almost a full eye exam (at no extra charge) and took time to address all of my questions and concerns in detail. He also advised me on how to navigate my insurance benefits, which clearly was above and beyond. I tried a new brand on contact lenses which so far seems either the same or marginally better. When I came back for a follow-up a week later, he did a detailed inspection to make sure everything was right and to discuss any potential problems. I would recommend Dr. White to anyone looking for an eye exam or contact lenses. They also have a decent selection of eyeglasses but I didn't really look at any so I can't comment. read more

Bomb. They were able to squeeze me in on the same day after work to do a contact lens fitting. Between the receptionist, Dr. White and the guy who rang me up, they were all super friendly, accommodating and down to earth. Dr. White was hilarious and very relatable. Years ago I randomly stopped in Central Square Eye to browse their eye-glasses and found the staff to be very helpful and easy to deal with. I found a pair of frames I liked and got them at a very fair price. A year later my then-current optometrist relocated and a friend gave Dr. White at Central Square Eye a glowing review. Since then I've been a happy patient as well as glasses and contact lenses customer. For my eye-exam experience, Dr. White does a great job listening to any changes you're experiencing in your vision and does a great job explaining what he's seeing in layman's terms. I don't know how you explain trust in a review but I feel confident that Dr. White cares first about your vision-health more than how much money he's making off of you. Also to Dr. White's credit, I referred a friend of mine who is in a wheel-chair to him and her experience was seamless. Too often being in wheel-chair makes simple things like going to an eye-exam more complex than other people's experience so props to Dr. White for making this a good experience. For the optical services (glasses and contacts), I like their approach. They don't hover over you while browsing for frames but they're readily available and happy to work with you when you need them. I appreciated them asking me to listen to all the available "add-on's" they offer then they work with you to figure out which one's you really need. They also have very good insight to my health insurance and were able to make some appreciated suggestions on how to manage my benefits. As for contact lenses, their pricing is fair and I've never waited more than a few days after ordering for the lenses to arrive. All-in-all I think everyone who works at Central Eye are nice people who are good at what they do. They're a small business with integrity and definitely a business you can trust will do right by you. read more

This review is WAY overdue for me. I've been going here for a few years now and it's a great place. I was recommended by a friend after having some not so great experiences with other eyeglass places especially one in Harvard Sq. Now in the interest of full disclosure I'm the fiance of George, the optician in the store. That's actually where I first met him. But beyond giving me a great fiance this place does great glasses. Best there is, period. I love having Doctor White as my eye doctor. Other eye doctors act like you're wasting thier time, especially if you have questions. Not him, he really listens and is way professional. Also the staff in the store (besides being my friends) are always ready to help. Even if they weren't my friends they treat everyone great. Stephanie, Sue and George really know thier stuff, and they're not going to sell you something unless they know you love it. I'm not very knowledgeable about glasses (even though I've worn them for 20+ years) and they explain optical things without making me feel like an idiot, which is important (to me at least). Dr. White is fantastic! After having some issues with bifocal contact lenses, he took the time to meet with me twice (at no cost to me nor insurance) to fix the issue, and even ended up giving me a year of free samples to swap out my old purchase. When I insisted on paying for the visits, he refused stating "my job is to make sure the contacts work for your eyes." If you are looking for an eye doctor that does his job well and will be completely responsive to fix any issues that might occur, Dr. White is your optometrist for life! Other pluses: squeezing me in for appointments on very short notice on my part multiple times, letting my child play with a toy he provided while he examined my eyes, remembering you for years and maintaining a wonderful patient/doctor relationship, and kind/cordial/and overall salt-of-the-earth nice staff! Giving Central Square Eye 4/5 because they were able to get me in to see a Dr. the next day after I lost my last pair of contact lenses. Nice shop, very comprehensive exam and friendly service. They also were able to have my contact lens script filled in 2 days. They lost a star b/c the exam cost me $75 out of pocket even with my vision insurance which seemed a bit steep. I bought my glasses there for an astounding price. I recently went back with my new prescription to get new lenses. A short, forties-ish guy (an owner?) who has been there a while priced my progressive lenses with photosensitivity at nearly $700! Also, no insurance discount for my Blue Cross. After looking at my Rx, he said the new lenses would make a significant difference in my vision. So I shopped... I found an optician at Concord Hillside Health Center (Harvard Vanguard), who accepted the insurance discount, quoted me $150 less for the lenses, and cautioned that the new prescription wouldn't make a significant difference. Today was my first appointment as a new patient at Central Square Eye Care. If there were more than 5 stars to give, this place would get them from me. Dr. White is awesome. Really personable, and he told me what each part of he exam was for. Then came the best part...you know how you typically walk out of an eye exam mostly blind because your eyes are dilated? Dr. White told me that he could do that, or he could take a digital picture of my eyes that we could both look at and would stay in my file. He let me know up front that the pictures weren't covered by my insurance (dilating my eyes would have been covered), but it was still a reasonable and small price to pay to have normal vision for the rest of the day at work and a baseline picture of what my eyes look like in case I ever had problems down the line. And (nerd alert) Dr. White pointed out what all the different things in the pictures were - it was pretty cool to see my own optic nerve. But the good things don't end here. The woman at the front desk (regretfully I can't remember her name) was extremely friendly and helpful. I already wear glasses and my old ones are, well, ready to be replaced. So there was no question I was getting new ones. In the few minutes before my appointment she had me try on a few that she thought I'd like...and I did. Once I had my new prescription, she sat down with me after the eye exam to pick out new frames which I love and am excited to get next week. She was really helpful and patient...and HONEST. I didn't even end up with the most expensive pair I tried on - she said another less expensive one looked better, and I agreed. To top it off, she'd tightened the screws on my old glasses while I was in my exam. Really just top notch service. Oh, and all this had me in and out of the Dr.'s office in 45 minutes flat, just enough time to grab lunch and head back to my office all in under an hour. read more

I've been going to Central Square Eye Care for about four years now, and I'm sad to be leaving Boston and, consequently, their great service! I've had several yearly appointments with Dr. Lewis and one, most recently, with Dr. White. They're both so friendly and knowledgeable. I have a pretty high prescription, and they helped me out with my transition to soft contact lenses after years of thick glasses--and they've given me my yearly check-ups ever since. Their staff presents all the options for whatever you need, and they explain insurance coverage clearly and effectively. There's never any pressure to buy what you don't want, which I really appreciate. They really have the client's best interest (and eye health!) in mind. I'm gonna miss this place a ton, but thankfully, Dr. White recommended an optometrist friend of his in Washington, DC that I'll try out once I move. read more

My wife and I have been seeing Dr. Lewis for almost 20 yrs. We followed her over from Sears and have gotten better care than we could ever have hoped for. Dr. Karen has helped me slow the damage from extended computer use and my wife's contacts are balanced for an odd prescription. The staff is brilliant for helping in selecting and obtaining glasses & lenses. Growing up I had 20/20 vision. Better actually. I never needed glasses. But I wanted them sooooooo badly. Why? Who knows. I also wanted braces (???). Weird. Of course I grew out of that and a few years ago my eyes started to go downhill. I couldn't see the board during lectures my last year of college, I couldn't read the menu behind the counter at Starbucks, I would drive right past the road I needed to turn on because I couldn't read the signs. I was in denial for quite awhile. Last week I finally sucked it up and made an appointment with Central Square Eye Care based on the reviews here on yelp. They were amazing!! Everyone in the office is very nice and personable. I sat with Dr. White for about 30 minutes while he ran the normal eye exam tests on me. He was fantastic! Very patient, professional and had a good sense of humor. Turns out I did need glasses and they helped me find ones that fit my face well, which was especially helpful because, after the drops, I couldn't see much of anything. And they're quick too - they told me they'd be ready a day or two after my appointment. Definitely check them out if you're in need of an eye doctor! read more

I used to leave in the area, and now that I have moved out, I continue coming back for my eye exams. This place is very small, but I have never been made to wait. I also find that they have great hours, and are open in the evenings for exams. The doctor is an optometrist, not an ophthalmologist, but that is all I am looking for. I see Dr. White, who is extremely friendly and very personable. He is careful to explain everything about the exam and the tests to me, along with letting me look at any images that he takes of my eyes. I find this very comforting, and allows me to better understand and feel comfortable about my health. I have purchased glasses from here once. They have a very nice selection, and many designer labels. Their glasses can be pricey, but you get what you pay for. They tend to carry higher end labels and designers. That is not the only selection they have however, and do have more affordable options. The man who does the fitting has been there for years, and is extremely well informed about all of the options for glasses and lenses. He is careful to explain everything so that you can make an informed decision about your money. For such a small store, they have a great selection and great service.
