First of all it's a very cool space, secondly, the jewelry is priced reasonably and badass. I went in while shooting a bachelor party at Growlers, so from my parking space, I popped in, bought a silver dinosaur egg necklace in five minutes flat. It was too cute to pass up. I didn't even have enough cash with me, she let me take it and I brought her the difference the other day, now I don't think I would try this tactic, it might not work again. I haven't told them yet, but I want to redesign my engagement ring, I can't wait to see what creative ideas they come up with. If I weren't already married to my sweet B, I would want to marry Custom, just for the engagement ring. It's so different to go into a jewelry store with grassroot values. This place is fantastic and I want almost everything they sell! (Honestly, I could leave it at that, buuut I won't...) I came across a Made By Custom booth at the Filmore Vintage Pop Up Shop a while back and I saw this floating ring (pictured) that I instantly fell in love with. I'm not huge on jewelry and it takes a lot for me to like a piece and then to actually purchase it knowing that I'd wear it. My birthday came up shortly after and my boyfriend got me the floating ring and I am literally obsessed with it. It is so beautifully made, the jewels look great in it and somehow, for not being a simple ring, it looks so simple and perfect, while still looking badass. The craftsmanship is just great. I went back in to get it tightened and it was impossible for me to get to the desk without selecting several other pieces I wanted to see. (Side note: the shop is on Nodas busy block, shares it's space with a bike shop, and is very cute and simple). Their pieces are one of a kind and there has, hands down, got to be something in there for everyone. I fell in love with several things, purchased one (pictured) right on the spot (haven't taken it off) and have plans to go get a few more. Like I said, I don't usually love jewelry so this is a big deal. There are some out there pieces but really, everything is beautiful, whether it be in an obvious way or their own refreshingly off beat way. Also, the staff (not 100% sure if I spoke to an owner or employee, so 'staff' it is) was unbelievably helpful and friendly. I fumbled around with a few pieces and stared at my fingers a lot and never felt pressured, uncomfortable, or annoying. They also do custom pieces (engagement rings, etc) upon request and several meeting and also reconstruct heirloom jewelry which I'm sure I'll be using at some point in time! My proposal was a little less traditional, though my fiancé asked with jewelry that had been in the family for years, it was no longer in a wearable state. I knew I was going to get to create my own engagement ring, and I had heard Lee was pretty amazing, I guess I just had no idea how amazing, After some emailing, we went in and discussed what materials I did have and what could be done. I unfortunately didn't really know where to go with such a blank slate, but after sending Lee multiple pictures and emails with information on what I did love and what I already do wear jewelry wise, he finally could envision something to fit me. He took my day to day into consideration as well- my career, my lifestyle (I work heavily with my hands), to create a setting and a ring that was going to last. We also decided to order a gemstone through him (since my initial jewelry only contained smaller diamonds) and use some of the other stones (and gold) to create a matching wedding band. I am looking forward to wearing them together! After he made a digital mock-up and we approved the design, Lee started on actually making my rings. This seems like a standard step, but he was great about answering my design questions and not just forcing his design on me (we did go with his initial design, but it was nice to hear his thoughts behind it and the pros and cons of other options). If you couldn't tell already, I'm extremely happy with our decision to go with Lee! Pricing seemed very reasonable, though we had a lot of our own materials to work with. He was very upfront with the quotes and there weren't any surprises down the road. Even if you don't need a piece of custom jewelry, I recommend stopping in to look at the jewelry in the cases. Beautiful, reasonably priced, my fiancé couldn't help picking me up a necklace when he stopped in one day... and I'm okay with that weakness. read more

Not only is the staff some of the friendliest you'll encounter the selection is some of the most unique I've ever seen. Don't shop a big box place when you can support local and get something so unique you are guaranteed not to ever see it on anyone else. I would assume you'd be hard pressed to NOT find something for someone here. They have all kinds. The space is small and might even be shared with an art gallery or artist, I'm not sure. Based on my initial contact, this place is easily 5 stars. I went to see them at the recommendation of a friend who has a few pieces of their jewelry. I had my engagement ring resized at another jeweler and was worried they'd resized it too small. I wanted another opinion of it and also wanted a place that could re-resize it if they agreed it was too small. I spoke to Lindsay who actually thought the ring is sized perfectly. She convinced me to wear it for a while longer, to try getting used to it. She didn't exactly say they wouldn't resize it, which I appreciate because ultimately it's a matter of my comfort. But I'm heeding her advice and will give it a little longer before deciding. While there, I talked to her about my ideas for a custom wedding band (the engagement ring is custom made and I want something to complement it). She totally got what I was going for and was able to put together a very high level estimate. She seemed more than certain they could do it and the price was a lot better than I had expected. On top of all this -- being knowledgable and confident in their work - - Lindsay was one of THE nicest people I've met in a while. It was so easy talking to her. I'd stopped in a few other jewelers in town and felt like a fool as I tried explaining what I needed. I guess a simpler way to say it is other places felt a little snobbish but this place did not. As soon as I heard about a unique jewelry shop opening up in NoDa, I just had to pay it a visit! Custom is a small, but lovely, jewelry shop that specializes in (no pun intended) custom work, fine jewelry repair and lovely sterling baubles. While the shop is pretty small, I ogled the five cases for quite some time. The craftsmanship is super detailed and they had items for a variety of price points - ranging from $10 sterling silver pendants to $$$ custom engagement rings. In particular I saw a lovely handcrafted silver necklace with multiple chains and beautiful octopus like pendants hanging on. I wish they had a few more cases to shop through, though. I would love to see some semi-precious stone pieces mixed in with the silver...but that's just a meager wish :) The folks who own this shop are extremely nice and laid back. It also helps that their shop dog, Bruce, is probably one of the cutest and sweetest pups I've ever snuggled. Since Lee has some major experience working at Lion Ltd., I would trust my most prized pieces in his capable hands. While I didn't buy anything during my first visit, you can bet that I'll be back again. read more

I was terrified of getting my engagement ring sized since A) it has an intricate alternating pattern all the way around & B) it is 5 generations old in the BF's family but y'all the darn thing was falling off, literally. After talking with Lee, I was assured he could size it properly and have it back to me in 3 days. Easy peasy. $40 well spent later I showed the sized ring to the BF's grandmother who had worn it herself for 50 years and she couldn't even find the seam. I also have to say that Lee has amazing patience. We went in to talk about having wedding bands made, really very clueless of what we wanted, and he ran us through a full handfull of options before putting our notes away for later. While I was mostly impressed by his custom-made skills, the cases of pieces he already had made for sale were also gorgeous and I have my eye on some pieces...if they are still there. read more

I really like Custom's design aesthetic: many pieces are an art-nouveau combination of intricate yet simple, which can be difficult to pull off. While there is certainly a range of affordable ($50-$80) items, a majority of what I saw were outside the graduate student's budget range. Still, if I was looking for a unique engagement ring, I would certainly keep Custom in mind. While I agree that service was perhaps somewhat lacking, once I asked a question he was friendly and gave a few recommendations. Thinking about it, I felt more comfortable here than in other jewelry stores where salespeople are trying hard to make a sell. Here, the jewelry speaks for itself, and I respect that. In the end, I was able to find what I was looking for: a catching circular-swirly silver pendant As an aside, I found it interesting that Custom practically shared floor-space with a bike shop. I love this beautiful jewelry store. You can find $16,000 diamond earrings and staggeringly beautiful engagement rings, but there are also $100 and less earrings, necklaces, and rings that are unique, modern, and eye-catching. I went in today looking for earrings in the $100 range, I looked at their selection, and while discussing with the friendly designer my thoughts about what I like, she offered to come up with a design to fit my budget and taste. Try getting that level of service at Tiffany's or even Brownlee's at that price point. I walked out with a modern geometric garnet and sterling silver ring for $110, and I'll be back soon for the earrings. Love these guys & gals! I had an old engagement ring that was bumming me out. They brainstormed with me to come up with an awesome solution to move my diamond to a necklace & put a blue topaz in the ring setting. And I love it!! Great bang for my buck, but even better is that I got 2 uniquely stunning pieces. My necklace was a custom piece based on a photo I found of a 1920s art deco necklace. Vanessa (who is the coolest, quirkiest fun gal!) worked with me to nail down the perfect sketches to make it my own style. And Lee did an amazing job of explaining the best way to craft it so my pendant hangs perfectly. Finally, we chose a unique chain to top off the vintage feel. I loved the whole process and felt very cared for. They listened and worked with me until we landed on the perfect design. My biggest dilemma now is what to buy next?!! I would definitely recommend them for any custom pieces - especially vintage inspired or with fun colored gems. Vanessa is a whiz at creative color. Their wedding jewelry is gorgeous and so special. I was blown away by the number of positive comments about Custom, so I brought in my engagement ring and wedding band to have some of the stones, in an identical setting, moved from one ring to the other. I was quoted two different prices, one to cut the pieces of the ring with stones and solder them to the other ring, and one quote to completely recast the ring. When I asked what was the difference, besides price, I was told that both choices would result in a completely seamless ring, and even choosing the more affordable option (cutting the ring) I would not be able to tell where it was pieced together. The only difference would be the likelihood of the ring to break in the future. I ended up going for the most affordable option and was pleased to pick up my ring when it was finished early. Once I got home I realized the exterior was not completely round and that one of the prongs juts out further than the others, causing the ring to be uncomfortable and snag. The responses I've gotten from Custom in this regard basically state that "they can't comment on the comfort of the ring, they simply did what I asked" and they implied that I should have gotten the more costly service if I wanted a seamless result. If I wasn't going to get the same results with the less expensive option, they should know their limitations and not promise something they can't deliver. I wish I had never taken my ring there and would caution anyone looking for repair work to use this shop. I chose Custom not because they were the closest to my house or because they had the lowest prices, but because they are supposed to be the best. I should have gone elsewhere. read more

I live around the corner from Custom and am constantly drooling over their window displays whenever I walk by. I not so subtly hinted to my now fiancé that whenever the time came to pop the question he better talk to Custom when looking for a ring. (They recently repaired a gold bracelet I had broken the clasp on and some earrings I had snapped the post off of so I was familiar with their quality of work as well as the beauty of it.) I'm not a fan of your plain-Jane solitaire diamond set in platinum or name brand look alike found on every other ring finger. I like jewelry that is unique and edgy while remaining timelessly beautiful; all of which Custom specializes in. Well my fiancé took the hint; he went to Custom with a few pictures of designs he knew I liked, a diamond that had been in his family, a budget, and a borrowed ring of mine (per their suggestion) for sizing purposes. They emailed a few times, including photos of CAD specs of the rings they came up with and details about some of the finer aspects of the ring, and less than two months later the ring was ready! Bonus; it came in under the budget they discussed too. I absolutely love my ring it is more than I could have dreamed of and I have received tons of complements on it. We will be returning shortly to have our wedding bands made. I can't imagine going anywhere else for jewelry needs in the future. I am so very pleased with Custom. My daughter wanted some guages for her prom and she found these online. We ordered them and was notified that it would take longer to get them because they (Am I suppose to say the name of the person I dealt with?) would be on vacation. I was offered a refund if I could not wait. I said I could wait. I needed them by the 24th of May and was told that we would have them by then.. And we did. My daughter was very pleased with them. I had a couple of communications with them and they responded back right away. I know that my daughter will continue to look for items. I bought my fiancee an engagement ring that was somewhat unique from an online retailer, but the so-called matching band did not complement the ring appropriately. I started looking around Charlotte for a custom shop that would be able to create something appropriate. We got several quotes, all ranging from 3-4x what the band cost from the online retailer. I knew that custom work would be more expensive, but I hadn't imagined how much! Then we found Custom in Noda. Lee responded to my emails quickly and we set up a time to come in. He was almost half the cost of the other places we looked at. Also, while he needed the engagement ring twice to do the fit up, he understood that my fiancee did not want to be without it for long, and once returned it to us on the same day. Finally, the work he did was stunning, it was exactly what we wanted, and at a price we could afford. It perfectly complements the ring and she thinks it is perfect. So, he does work that is excellent, affordable, and prompt. Lee Lally has been designing and building jewelry for a long time. Over ten years ago, he designed custom wedding bands for me, so when it came time for me to find, design and purchase a diamond ring, my direction was easy. I contacted Lee and loosely described the type of ring I wanted, the size of diamond and how I wanted it to appear on my girl's hand. In no time, he had located a highly graded, 2.13 carat diamond, came up with several settings & band designs and even had some cool ideas of how we could engrave the band. Soon after, we agreed to combine his ideas with a few of mine. He quickly rendered the technical drawings and we were on our way. Keep in mind, I live in California so most would think that it would be impossible to create a beautiful ring while taking into account so many variables, but he was able to do it within 6 weeks from the East coast. I received the ring a few days ago and it's absolutely stunning! He did an excellent job for me ten years ago, but in my opinion, his work has only gotten better. I would not hesitate to recommend him to my friends in California or anywhere else in the world. Lee is by far, one of the most honest and creative designers I've encountered.
