My appointment was with a nail technician named David (#10), and unfortunately, it was a service I will never repeat. From the outset, David seemed rushed. Instead of providing a relaxing, attentive experience, he sped through the service, making me feel like I was just another task to check off his list. It became even more frustrating when I requested a specific nail design and David gave me one price, only to try and increase the price once he started working on it--because he kept messing up the design. I understand that mistakes happen, but this felt like a clear attempt to overcharge me for his errors. Adding to my frustration, I had to repeatedly remind David of the steps to complete the design, as he wasn't paying attention. It was evident that he was more interested in texting on his phone than focusing on the service I was paying for. This lack of professionalism and care was not only disappointing but also disrespectful. What made matters worse was David's behavior toward me while he was working. He spoke negatively about me in Vietnamese, assuming that I couldn't understand. Unfortunately for him, I've had a working knowledge of Vietnamese for over 15 years. I chose not to confront him in the moment because I was trying to remain calm and professional, despite his clearly rude and condescending remarks. His attempt to talk behind my back only reflects poorly on his character and the values of the salon. As if this wasn't enough, when the service was finished, David said, "Next time you come here, ask for someone else, not me." I responded with a simple "okie dokie," paid over $120 for the service, and walked out. I knew right then and there that this would be the last time I ever spent my money at this salon. As a polyglot who speaks five languages, I understand the appropriate time and place to use another language. Speaking negatively about a customer, especially when you assume they don't understand, is both rude and disrespectful. This kind of behavior is not acceptable, especially in a diverse community like Detroit, which has an almost 80% Black population. When you're serving a community, you need to show respect, and David's actions showed none of that. I felt it was important to share my experience with the wider community. It's crucial to support businesses that value and respect their customers. I will never return to Custom Nails, and I strongly encourage others to consider their choices as well. Don't spend your money where you're not respected. There are plenty of other places that will treat you with the care and professionalism you deserve. All I asked for was gel polish on my natural nails and I was told it was $22 okay not bad...so I said yes and then the guy who would be working on my nails forced me to pay before doing my nails and then he did REGULAR nail polish and I was charged $19 for that and I said this isn't what I wanted, because it was already discussed beforehand that i wanted gel polish, I wanted it off so I politely asked if I can just have it removed and get a refund, they didn't want to refund me and sat me back in a chair and sloppily put one thin coat of gel over my nails to think that it would make it okay and I'd just shut up. I worked in nails about 6 years back, and all we have is gel powder. I did not know that gel came in other forms? If Tiffany could be more precise in her "research" as to state what other form gel could come in...a toothpaste tube perhaps? Perhaps Tiffany could go to a nail supply store and ask if gel comes in something else and clarify. There is a form of topcoat that goes on a gel set that requires UV light to cure, but that is not gel. It is simply another form of topcoat. She was stopped at the door and told they had new chairs and there's a weight limit....and they would not service her. She left the store feeling very hurt and upset by this experience. The absolute worst experience I ever had at any nail salon. I was told that I had to pay upfront because I was a new customer. After observing other customers paying after their services were completed. I questioned the manager about where is the signage that indicated that, I was told they don't have anything that says that. I let the manager know she was not being truthful and her response was " I DONT CARE WHAT YOU THINK". I paid $85.00 and as I watched the nail tech working on my nails I noticed that they were not shaped correctly and it was clear that he really didn't know how to properly apply Chrome powder. I had to instruct him on how to apply it. I also noticed that the sign-in sheet did not have a section that you could check whether you were a returning customer or new customer. I also had to have the cc nail tech to rebuild my nail back up. I asked for a receipt and the put incorrect services that I received. When I left I went to the beauty supply store and was greeted by a customer who had just left there and she indicated that she paid after her services were completed. The owner of the beauty supply store shared that many customers have complained about the quality of service they received from the nail salon and it was not a very positive experience they received. The fact that a business owner would blantinly tell me a untruthful statement tells a lot about the business itself. Not to mention they were not following proper sanitary guidlinlines. I needed a pedicure badly and did not want to go all the way back to Downriver so I searched for a nail salon close to Midtown and came across Custom Nails. I was a bit apprehensive but out of options and truly, how bad can a pedicure get? The salon itself is a bit outdated and not very aesthetically pleasing. It feels stuffy and dusty inside. The staff were not entirely welcoming and after sitting for about 10 mins, they asked me to pick a pedicure chair to wait at. I selected one and waited for my aesthetician. He arrived and this my friends, is where the three stars comes into play. You see, I can forgive a place for not being the cutest or most organized, fancy salon. This is my go-to shop, and I've never been disappointed! In my search for a nail shop in the city, it seems like the choices fall between two categories - expensive spa/salons downtown, or cheap neighborhood shops where the low prices are reflected in the cleanliness and service. Custom Nails is a great median between the two. It's clean and well kept, and even when they are busy they always seem to have a lot of technicians on hand so the wait has never been long. Prices are good, a gel mani will run you about $25, pedi about the same, and fill ins about $20 (give or take...I don't recall exact prices but that's a ball park of what my totals usually come to). The $8 brow waxing here is the best deal in town. The woman who does it is gentle and takes her time, shapes them nicely, and uses the tweezers to get any last straggling hair the wax might have missed. I come here often. I get my eyebrows and nails done here. They never get the eyebrows quite right is never been terrible so I generally don't say anything I just move on. Today, when the woman asked (as she always does) what I thought when she finished my eyebrows. I told her I didn't really like them, it's not what I asked for, I asked for them to be thick still, just clean up the stray hairs (like I always do), they were especially thinner than usual so I wasn't too pleased. When I went to the front to wait for my manicure I was told I didn't need to pay and to leave since I didn't like my eyebrows. So that's it. Maybe they shouldn't ask or maybe I should have lied. While this place is 10x cleaner (from the high tech pedicure chairs to the flat screen TV's) that's about all I can vouch for. Appearances are not what they seem. The owner of this shop ALWAYS has a terrible dismissive attitude & he did a careless job on my nails. I felt rushed & dissatisfied. My nails are extremely thick, misshapen & somewhat bumpy. I went here to get my nails and eyebrows done last Friday because I was in town for a wedding and this was the closest place. My nails were fine, I just got a regular manicure. My eyebrows, however turned out horrible because the lady didn't know what she was doing. The wax was super hot and my eye immediately started turning red. I told the lady it hurt and she said my eyes might be sensitive. Another lady gave me some Vaseline to cool them off. I went home thinking it would go down but it got worse and I realized I was really burned. I used aloe Vera and neosporin to heal my eyes but I had to walk around for a week looking crazy.
