Cut and Shave Barbershop - Old Town North Alexandria Over the past 14 years I've had only intermittent success in finding a barbershop that I could rely upon. I'm not a purist - mostly I'm just looking for a standard haircut at a reasonable price. I found what I was looking for when I visited the Old Town North Cut and Shave Barbershop. This shop is one of three Cut and Shave locations and is in that part of Old Town that features a great Sheraton Suites hotel, Trader Joe's, Hank's Oyster Bar, and Harris Teater. (The other Alexandria shops are at the Braddock Road Metro station and on Eisenhower Avenue). For my first visit I had an appointment, but during the time I was waiting I saw walk-in customers, so I think both walk-ins and appointments are accommodated. Note that there's a check-in tablet near the cash register, and it's important to sign in upon arrival. I think that way walk-ins and reservation customers all can be accommodated. My barber, Queen, did a great job of listening to my concerns, and getting feedback while she worked. Queen clearly knew what she was doing, and did a fine job cutting my hair. This was a Men's Scissors Cut ($35 plus tip), and Queen matched the style I was looking for. For me, it takes a while to trust a barber. As this was my first visit, there's no final judgment here, just an endorsement based on a good initial impression. The plus here is if I do get to where I can fully trust Queen, I'll be able to get my beard trimmed as well as my hair cut. The shop in fact has a wide range of services, better than most shops that I've been to. Thus far, in the 14 years I've lived in Old Town, I have yet to find a barber who can trim my beard, so it would be great if that could happen at Cut and Shave. read more

Seems reasonable. Always on time with scheduled appointments. Had my hair cut by Kevin and Amy on different occasions. My style is a one or a two on the sides and back. Half an inch from the top and comb it back. Done. Easy. I try to observe the other barbers with their clients. They all seem happy. Never scened a disgruntled customer. I went in with a beautiful full beard and asked for a beard trim and haircut. Kimberly managed to send me out with a clipper cut beard that is NOTHING like I asked for. I could have gotten the clippers and run through my beard myself and done a way better job, and saved myself $30! My neckline isn't even straight after asking her to fix it three times. I've tried this place multiple times due to convenience, each time hoping it gets better. I don't know why I do this to myself. This place sucks. It's a $5 haircut for $35 (or whatever). My fiancé had been coming here for a while. We would make appointments easily online and it was pretty simple. Today really changed our perspective on this place and we will not be coming back. My fiancé got off work early and decided to go in about 30 minutes early (his appointment was at 1 pm and he went in at 12:30), he went and checked in and the woman in front said "You are late. You are going to have to wait", when his appointment was at 1 pm. There was 2 people ahead of him so he patiently waited. Then, Jennifer was going to take him back and the woman at the front stepped in and said "No, he has to wait". So he was going to be taken back but this woman stopped him from getting service because he was "late", but he was actually 30 minutes early? He was going to wait happily until his appointment time, but when he was going to get called back, she stopped it from happening and I honestly don't get why. It was practically empty in there. I have been coming here for almost a year now, and am so happy with this shop! I've gotten a military haircut from several of the barbers and it always comes out just right. Now that they have an online sign up, it's easy to sign up for an appointment with a specific barber, though I am comfortable with everyone that works here. Anyone looking to get a really solid fade, neck shave, and hot towel, this is hidden gem of a barbershop that I can't recommend highly enough. One time, I was given a brand new barber and the cut didn't come out perfect (it was still totally fine but it took a while and wasn't a perfect low fade). The owner, Le, noticed, all on her own, and offered me a free haircut the next time. I was impressed that even though I wasn't going to complain, she was astute enough to see it didn't come out exactly how I wanted. Since then, I have had nothing but good experiences and I can't recommend them highly enough! I originally found this place on Yelp. My husband has been to many many barbers and salons with varying prices and just could not find the one place he truly liked. When he gave this place a try he told me everyone was so professional and nice. They took their time to ensure the customer was happy with their cut. I remember when he came back I was impressed! He's been coming here for a year now. On New Year's Eve my husband had an appointment to get a fresh cut for the new year and this time I thought I'd give it a try too. I was skeptical at first because they mainly do men's haircuts and I don't trust many salons. I've had terrible experiences before that traumatized me! A lot of people don't know they do women's haircuts but they do! Le was my stylist but also the manager of the store. She was so sweet and professional. All stylists are great. I believe my husband had Jenny. I showed her a picture of the style I wanted and she immediately understood. During the cut, it got really busy with walk-ins and phone calls because it was New Year's Eve and everyone wanted a cut, but I never felt rushed. She still took her time to make sure my cut went well when her next appointment was already waiting. I had a lot of hair haha! Both my husband and I loved our cuts! The original location on Eisenhower Avenue was justifiably busy at almost all hours, so it's great that a second location has opened in North Old Town Alexandria. The new spot looks slick & clean and is effectively set up to operate in this new pandemic normal (masks, appropriate distancing, only haircuts for now). The staff here are at the top of their game and make the experience so comfortable that you'll be looking forward to your next visit. I live in Arlington and there are nearly 20 barbershops in close proximity to me, but I've had mixed results with each experience. I've been a Cut & Shave Barbershop customer (Eisenhower location) since day one and I'm thrilled to have a new location a little closer to home. I've trusted these folks to cut my hair for some of the most important moments in my life- funerals, weddings and even for TV show appearances. Whether I was playing a military officer in the Netflix series "House of Cards" or a White House photographer in HBO's "Veep", I only trusted Cut & Shave Barbershop. The new location follows the same standards and practices as the Eisenhower location. They only hire the most talented barbers and each barber has the same attention to detail, provides the same quality service and will deliver a good cut every time. While I tend to stay with the same barber, they all do phenomenal work. This barbershop is literally a cut above the rest. The Eisenhower location has a VERY dedicated group of fans and soon this location will, too. Our appearance and our hair is a very personal matter. Had been going to the Eisenhower Ave location for years before they opened up this new (and higher priced) location in Old Town. In the beginning it seemed like they shuffled some of their best barbers over to get the new location off the ground -- however my last several cuts left me increasingly dissatisfied. Most recently, I went on a Tuesday in an effort to skip the weekend (and Monday) crowd; big mistake. Apparently Le, the manager, was off that day and consequently there was very little oversight with regard to customer service and cut quality. Worst of all, some barbers weren't using straight razors for skin fades, and one who was didn't even bother changing the blade from the last customer! Yikes. Unfortunately, at the rate this place is going downhill, you may be better off learning how to cut your own hair; it might take some time, but it will likely come out just as good, if not better, than the cuts they've been giving out here lately! read more

They take the time to understand what I need, and have been able to cut different styles from photos that I brought in. I wouldn't trust anyone else with my hair. I had the worst experience here. The barber messed up my haircut. I showed the unevenness and how horrible the haircut was. She started arguing with me and raising her voice. It was almost like I couldn't get a word out. No apology no nothing. On top of all of that she charged me for a new haircut. The next day, I reached out to address my concern to a manager or owner. I moved to the NCR 8 months ago and have been searching for a stylist - I've had one bad haircut after another since arriving. Granted, I have terrible hair - it's thin and the cowlicks make it extremely difficult to cut & style. Well, my search is over! He watched TV the entire time he cut my hair...started to use an old razor on my neck--then dropped the new one into a pile of dirt on the counter...had to redo parts of my BUZZ cut three times because he missed spots and it was uneven. The "hot" towel that he applied to my head at the end smelled funky and wasn't even close to warm! Worst experience at this location. I'll probably try the one on Eisenhower Avenue...but doubtful I'll come back to this location again. I hate the barbers in the DC metro area. My main barber disappeared and I needed to find one with skills who can cut a sharp fade. I went today to cut and shave Alexandria, said high fade with a line up. She tapered all the way up and was about to push back my hairline before I stopped her in the end. Walked out of there with something between a Mohawk and a mullet after she styled!!! First time I have walked out of a barber shop and covered my head with a hat out of frustration. This was not the first time I had issues. At their other location, Eisenhower, they cut past my front hairline!!! It's completely unfair to not accept any debit/credit cards or Apple Pay, instead they make you use their ATM after your haircut. They gave no prior warning that they are "cash only", so what should have only cost me $24+tip ended up being $29+tip. The stylist did a decent job but wasn't friendly or welcoming in the slightest.
