If I could give ZERO I would. Hands down the WORST, MEANEST and most DEGRADING service I've EVER received for hair or ANY type of service OVERALL. The owner Cynthia did my hair- I showed her a simple pic to brighten my hair up. Instead she dyed my hair GREY and I look like a 90 year old woman with no pigment left in my hair (im 23). I called the salon to say I was unhappy- she called me back and started YELLING at ME over the phone saying I was wrong, and quote "came at her" when I arrived because I showed her a picture of what I wanted and asked for a "partial foil" (which is the only process I've ever needed to do for my hair- and she said awesome lets do it/ pictures always help). When it was done I was HORRIFIED at how HORRIBLE it looked! She wouldn't let me speak on the phone instead she started blaming ME and yelling at me in the most RUDE, DEFENSIVE, UNPROFESSIONAL and CHILDISH way before I could barely even say hello or explain why I called. She made me cry and I got so overwhelmed by her that I had to hang up on her, again to speak to a young lady who is only 23 that way is insanity- nevermind ANYONE that way! I saved up to go see her and was very excited to have my hair done before my first work trip and meeting my new colleagues. Instead im scrambling and spending more money to have someone else fix it bc I dont trust her to touch my hair again to fix, and I cant imagine seeing her in person again now. NEW FAVORITE SALON IN BOSTON! I've been searching for a new stylist since moving to the city earlier this year and I haven't had any luck; however, I'm preparing to travel for an important work event and things were getting down to the wire. The Cynthia K salon scheduled me for an appointment within the same week that I called with Cynthia herself. I shared a bit about my hair over the phone and more when I arrived at my appointment; Cynthia herself held an amazing consultation with me where she essentially looked at my hair and read my mind. I'm THRILLED with my haircut - having wavy/curly and fine, shoulder-length hair, I get nervous going in for trims, and she did a wonderful job. Cynthia was able to maintain my length while cleaning up my outgrown light layers, and I look SLEEK, REFRESHED, and I'm ready to feel and look my best at my work conference! I was scheduled for a one process and blow dry. Cynthia always takes time at the beginning of each session to evaluate my hair. How is the color, cut and new growth. First she adjusted my color- just a bit, then we talked about trimming and exactly how much. My hair looked amazing- my blonde color is unique to me and my coloring- as is the length and style. Bella, creator of all finely manicured hands (and pedicured feet) on Newbury St is now at Cynthia K (she has been here all year, I am just behind on letting everyone else know)!!! I found Bella 20+ years ago when she was in a salon that I went to for facials, and then I followed her to 4 or 5 other locations. She is the ONLY PERSON who has managed to tame my cuticles and keep my hands looking their best. First thing, thanks for replying back two years later. Second thing, I opted out of a consult because what I wanted was so simple. Third thing, I sent you pictures of my own hair and the length (which is long), and my bridesmaid hair, and inspo pictures on 8/27....I heard NOTHING from Cynthia until 10/20 when I REACHED OUT TO CONFIRM MY APPTS. Cheryl then states in email she printed out and gave Cynthia and Maria my emails, and they would contact me to discuss...I was then contacted by Cynthia and asked to resend my pictures because she didn't know why she never saw them...MIND YOU THIS IS OCTOBER 20TH and MY WEDDING WAS ON OCTOBER 30TH. Cynthia then stated she wanted to see a picture of my dress to discuss my choice of hairstyle...(which it's not her place to have chosen my hairstyle, I am paying you to do what I WANT FOR MY WEDDING). I was then told, I needed extensions for a fishtail braid (the extensions could be ordered but would cost $500)...Since I was told last min and did not budget for $500 worth of fake hair, was told the fishtail braid wouldn't look good with my dress, I settled for something even more simple a low chignon type bun...(which was attempted at the salon and Cynthia failed miserably at doing that hairstyle) after being furious with the completed look by Cynthia her assistant had to come outside to get me and she convinced me to come back inside, and then took out the mess of hair and did the best she could do for a fishtail braid. The atmosphere of the salon was not inviting and your team acted as though they weren't expecting us at all and did not seem very prepared or have knowledge about anything that was discussed. When I came in I was taken back because the assistant who washed my hair spoke to me as if we were still doing the braid, and we were not I discussed and settled for no braid. Speculation here but Cynthia herself I think wanted to steer me away from the braid because she didn't know how to do one that is why the assistant did it not her. So if your stylists are not trained in doing hair dos for events or weddings etc you should probably take it off your website that you do offer those services. Cynthia's up do was atrocious on both myself and my mothers, and Maria's down curled hairstyle she gave my bridesmaid was also garbage. I don't want to reach out by phone or email to discuss further because your salon is garbage. read more

This place was amazing. Lovely, clean, so nice, and my stylist, Shanyn, was the bomb. She listened to what I wanted, and executed to perfection while keeping in mind how much time I had on my meter. No joke, I literally walked out of the salon and hadn't even walked a block before a guy stopped me, said, "I like your hair," and gave me his card and told me I should call him some time. Before Cindy, I let the wind (and Gilt City) take me from salon to salon on Newbury St. where I received perfectly acceptable hair cuts, blow outs, and the occasional texturizing treatment. The inevitable truth was that I hadn't found my "person" - that person who will let you gush about your hair insecurities and length anxieties, who believes you when you say you are and will always be low maintenance, and who just knows what to do even when you don't. My wash, cut, and blow dry went far beyond my Newbury St. expectations. Cindy was not only the most knowledgeable stylist I've ever had, she was also able to give me a cut that looks chic when straight and flirty when curly. She's a genius. So happy I took a chance on groupon! I got a haircut and deep condition treatment ($45) with Erica. I have to say it was probably one of the best hair cuts I've gotten in a while. My hair was below my shoulders, ombre and with major dead ends. Erica definitely nailed it and actually listened to what I wanted. My hair just feels healthier and thicker with the style cut. I was so surprised she was only a junior stylist, she is extremely confident and knowledgeable from what I took away. I'm definitely going back for a touch up on my ombre and hair cut. She mentioned that her normal cuts were a little more expensive but I would rather pay more for a great cut than a little less and for something half assed. FYI to get to the salon walk up the back stair case to the third floor and open the door, there's no sign but -- you'll probably hear the blow dryers. read more

Purchased a Gilt City voucher for a blow-dry and Herold took care of me. He gave me a nice scalp massage and blow-dried my hair first using a regular blow-dryer. He then used a curling iron to create some volume. I was quite hesitant about the tight curls but he assured me that the curls would loosen up and they did later in the day to achieve the desired effect. read more

This long bob was done by Shannon to tame my long, wavy hair for an interview. Everyone was friendly, the salon was clean and well decorated, and they are reasonably priced for the Newbury Street area. Shannon did a thorough consultation before she started and created a cut that would work wavy or straight. The blowout lasted 4 days, which is unusually good for my unruly hair. I used a gilt city voucher but I think it was good enough that I will come here and pay full price for my next cut. read more

I got a haircut by Erica after getting a Groupon. The Salon: Very bright and clean. I like the minimalist deco and dominant white color. The atmosphere is definitely chic but in an accessible and casual way. Erica: She was so nice and took time to listen to what I wanted and to know me better. I had a botched haircut from another salon earlier today - immediately rushed to Cynthia K asking for help. They greeted me with a smile and quickly invited me in for a consultation. The service was extremely professional from the door to the shampoo and to the haircut. My hair stylist was Herol. He consulted me and understood all of my requests. He even offered a discount because my hair was so bad to the point I did not have a lot of options but to trim it back to shape. Herol managed to turn the mess into a very presentable hairstyle that fits me well. Here was what made this a 5 star service: Herol offered me a freshly squeezed orange mimosa to ease away the stress and frustration. I recently gave gilt a try by purchasing a voucher for both a partial foil and a haircut service. My stylist, Shannon, was so friendly and truly understood what I was looking for. I was completely comfortable after our consultation, immediately I knew she knew her stuff! I had never colored my hair before and she kept it very natural but noticeably better, exact what I wanted.
