This review is soly for their nail services. Came in here for a gel manicure and it was easily one of the worst manicures that i've ever had. The technician did a really sloppy job and my nails started chipping in just three days???. Did i really pay $50+ for this? If you're thinking about coming in here to get your nails done, i would suggest you to go elsewhere. They only have ONE station available and the station is situated right by the windows so you might be in a daze with all the people walking by you at the mall. Not sure how frequently this happens but they were 20 minutes late for my appointment. Great stylist but the service and feel of the place is... meh. I'm currently living on the Cape but was coming to town for the weekend. I love Aveda reds, so I'm a loyal fan now. I chose this salon solely based on location. I didn't plan appropriately for traffic and was running late for my appointment. I called to see if I could push my appointment back a bit. I know it's annoying when customers do this, but the response I received was condescending, at best. He assumed I was cancelling my appointment, at first. Ultimately, he was able to push my appointment time back and schedule me with a different stylist, for which I was thankful. When I arrived, the greeting was flaccid. I was told I was too early, and my stylist was still with another client. (Would you like me to leave and come back?) She ran over, but I didn't mind waiting, particularly since I was late. Michelle greeted me. I discussed what I wanted with her. She made a suggestion about using a slightly darker shade of red, since I was doing all over color, as it would help blend my roots better. I travel for work and have to work with new stylists often. Some are less successful than others. Michelle knows her shit! She's not especially engaging, but the color ended up being fantastic, as was the cut and style. Even she was impressed with her handiwork. As an aside, I noticed the interaction between staff was muted and just polite to let you know they work together. It was as if they all barely knew each other and were just renting space to "do hair." Sort of a weird feeling, but I was pleased with Michelle's work, so I mostly dismissed it. Hard not to notice though. As we finished up, and I returned to the counter to pay, I interacted with the same fellow from check in. Interaction with him is hard to describe. The best I can come up with is that he's a bit smug. I'm paying you over $200 for color, cut, and style. Pretend to be happy. They don't accept tip on credit card, so he directed me down the corridor to the ATM. When I returned, our interaction was the same. I'm handing you a wad of cash as a fantastic tip, Pretend you like what you're doing. Seriously, just fake it. Overall, if you care significantly about service, find some place else. Overall, I am just really happy with this place. I heard rants and raves about a particular girl there ( can't remember her name) so I went in without an appointment requesting her. She was on vacation that week so I had the pleasure of having Michelle cut my hair. Now I wont work with anyone else! This place is certainly laid back for the neighborhood its in, but by no means does that mean they are lazy or unkempt. The price matches the neighborhood however... Anyways, I have the most outrageous head of hair - curly wavy and thin in some areas, thick in others and ridiculously sensitive to humidity. Michelle chopped my hair in elegant layers, keeping it long as possible and giving my dramatic bangs. After the cut and the straight blow dry I was near tears because I hadn't felt so satisfied with my hair in over a decade. She gave me tips on how to keep my hair strong and reduce thinning. Another thing I did like about this place, they don't try to up sell you on a damn thing. Nothing I hate more than retail reps attacking you with a reason to make commission. This business is scam. I booked online for my reservation, and they charged my cc for the whole service 3 weeks at advanced to my appointment. After the appointment the charged $50 extra for some non sense reason. This time was the second time I got scammed by them. The first time I asked them how much it's gonna cost for highlight and cut, and after my visit they charged me $80 more. It's not about their service, I believe this behavior is wrong. I really wanted to love this place but location and convenience is not everything! I ended up paying WAY too much for something I did not want. I asked for an ombre and they basically gave my strawberry blond hair with 3 inches of dark roots! I showed the stylist photos and even asked if she had done an ombre before and she was very nice and sounded very professional walking me through the process. But what i ended up with was not at all what i asked for. She even tried to fix it and put some more darker pieces in but it still was not right. She told me is was a drastic change and to live with it a few days so i did. I ended up calling back the salon after 3 days to see if they would fix it and got no return call back. The worst part was the cost and the lack of customer service. At no time during my 3 hours there was the cost of what i was having done mentioned, nor did i ask which was my mistake. When I was done the stylist broke out the cost for me and told me it was going to be $290. Yikes! BUT when i get to the register the receptionist rings me up and starts looking uncomfortable....calls the stylist over and says its going to be more.... $400! Of course, I'm not happy so they call the owner over Tony. He tells me that is the cost of the services i have received. When i protest he says "well you were here for 3 hours" Seriously?! This time the stylist asks him to reconsider the price and he says "well if you want to give her a discount, we can take it out of your commission." How rude and unprofessional is that?! At the end of the negotiation i ended up paying around $300, which i would have never have spend had i know the cost. I got waxed here today and was very impressed with the results. I have very sensitive skin, and talked to the aesthetician about my concerns, and she let my husband stay in the room with us in case I had any any sort of reaction (which I thought was really nice, albeit a bit embarrassing to have my getting waxed turn into a spectator sport, though my husband was engrossed in a videogame magazine) So, the waxing itself was great, hard wax, gentle, no rashing...it was by far the most painless waxing experience I've had to date. The Bliss Poetic wax is made out of sunshine or something. It's this gorgeous turquoise color, isn't too hot, and when it's yanked off, barely hurts at all. I was astounded. Michelle, who did the waxing was awesome. She was funny, sweet, and friendly. I think it was the first time I'd gotten a Brazillian where I didn't feel nervous or awkward. And really, when you're dealing with a stranger under circumstances like that, and you're totally comfortable with them, that kind of rules. Laura A stated that Michelle didn't really get in there with the waxing, which was initially true, but when I noticed that she hadn't removed as much hair as I'd wanted, I just pointed out I'd like more hair removed and where and she did it. So if you're concerned about not getting what you're paying for, just pay attention to what's going on and she'll gladly accommodate you. The rest of the salon seems great. Aveda products, Bare Escentuals makeup, 3 awesome former Liquid employees, a cute puppy, and a gorgeous space. I was totally impressed and will absolutely be going back. read more

Let me start out this review by saying I have never felt strongly enough about a customer service experience to write a review on Yelp. I'm traveling visiting my parents in Boston and they wanted to treat me to getting my hair done. I show up for my appointment with Melissa on time to get my roots touched up. I sit down in the chair to talk to her about what I want and the first thing she says to me is, "I don't have time for that". Not getting upset because I get it, I have a lot of hair, I asked numerous questions, could she do the full color today and the partial highlight tomorrow? Should I just reschedule? She assures me that she can achieve a similar look to what I have and blend it to make it flawless. So we do the treatment and she puts in a gloss and blow dry it and I don't focus on it for too long take a quick look and it's shiny and looks fine so I head out. I get home notice a slight difference in color from my roots and the rest of my hair but I don't think think too much about it. I wash it two days later after all the product and gloss and stuff is washed out my roots are a completely different color then the rest of my hair. Mind you, I'm back in Chicago at this point. I take a picture of my hair and send it to my mom ask her to go to the salon and ask for a refund because I'm going to have to pay to get my hair redone here. Immediately the two women at the front desk acknowledge the difference in color in the picture but they call the lead stylist over to check it out. She is rude from the start she denies that it looks like two different colors but says that she needs to see it down too. (Why does it matter what my hair looks like down, it looks terrible up?) So they argue for a bit but it ends with the salon promising to call my mom after they speak to Melissa. Well 7:30pm rolls around and no one has called my mom so I call and ask if they had spoke to Melissa. They couldn't get ahold of her so she will have to call me tomorrow. Tomorrow rolls around and it's 3:30pm and no one has called so I call and talk to the stylist. She tells me she notices no difference in color, calls me a liar, says how does she even know it's me in the photo, says she is done with me, tells me that since I won't send another photo I'm trying to extort money (what??) I tell her I will send a photo. I send her a second photo and now I am waiting for her response. Honestly, I don't see much hope in getting the money back. Needless to say if the bad dye job wasn't enough the horrible customer service is. DO NOT GO HERE. Look at the photos and you be the judge. read more

Went here for a haircut when i came back to Boston. I was highly disappointed from the moment I entered. Nobody bothered to attend to me and gave me an attitude. Once the stylist came, the hair was a very disappointing performance and just kept going to the front desk during the haircut to talk to her colleague.. For the price I am paying, I expect better service. I do not know if people there had a bad day when i visited, but please give the service to the customers that pay the premium for it. read more

I think it's a significant testament to your stylist's abilities when, upon leaving the salon, your hair is so shiny and beautiful that you are immediately asked out on a date by a stranger on the street. And that's exactly what happened. (Sidenote: He was cute, and I did accept). So T'mas, I'm sticking with you and your new digs. You can totes take credit for the date. When I was looking around the salon, all the stylists seemed like pros, and all the patrons, comfortable, happy and relaxed. Whenever anyone had a free moment, they were sweeping, so the place remains sparkling clean. The atmosphere is relaxed and fairly low-maintenance, not like some of the salons on Newbury. My only complaint is that they don't take checks. Boo. But the dog more than makes up for this small drawback. read more

I got my hair cut on Monday. What a fantastic experience. Wendy rules. She cut my hair a few times at Liquid, but Liquid became a lot less convenient for me when I moved out of the Back Bay. So when I'd put it off for a year and desperately needed a haircut, I asked my friends where to go. Wendy's name, and the fact that she was now at Escape, came up without my even mentioning it, so I figured it was fate. I think Wendy might be psychic. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my hair. But apparently, Wendy knows what I want because she did amazing things with my usually uncooperatively wavy spew of locks. Of particular note, she managed to trim my split ends and give me some really badass layers while leaving the longer parts of my hair damn close to the length they were when I got in there. And of course, anybody who's spent more than 5 minutes talking to Wendy knows she's super-fun. A few days later, I still love it. She flat-ironed it while I was in there, and I was mildly concerned that it would only work for me like that, but no, the woman knows what she's doing. Today, it's got a little flip, a little curl to it, and it still looks freakin' awesome. Thank you, Wendy! And the more I think about it, the more I think I'm going to schedule an appointment ASAP to get some color! read more

I never really used to care too much about who cuts my hair- I'd just walk-in to a random hair salon and get a quick hair cut- until I met TAMAS 2 years ago! Back then he used to work at a different place, and when he relocated, I had to follow.... He is more than what you can ask of a hairdresser. When my hairdresser Kerry left Aveda Salon on Boylston (now Athena salon) for greener pastures--I was a bit disappointed. My wondrous hairdresser flew the coop of the place that gave me a massage before every appointment. Oh no! Though Escape Spa doesn't have the free massages they do have the old school Aveda hair colorists/stylists working at Escape. You might miss the salon if you were walking by it. Very simple interior and exterior with few flares. Inside you'll get first rate stylists, though. The salon also features Tanning booths and a Full-Service Spa. Huge mirrors and a fun, relaxed atmosphere. It's located right near the Cyclorama in the South End...a comfortable abeit somewhat far walk from Copley and Orange-line Back Bay station. Kerry is a true gem. Look her up and tell her Shannon B. sent you. I've been going to her for four years and she's always rocked at keeping my hair beautiful, healthy, and marvelous looking. She's especially good at funky hairstyles and always knows how to turn your vision into something realistic for you. Love her! read more

I can not emphasize enough how amazing Tmas is! I am a ex-San Franciscan...but i still have San Franciscan hair (no not your typical blonde or brunette..."cherry bomb" red)...and i have GOBS of the stuff...seriously...looooooooong wavy grody hair I walked into this place and felt immediately at home...Megan is amazing and knew EXACTLY what i wanted...it is waaay perfect... I bought a Salon Services Package through Groupon for a cut, conditioning treatment, partial highlights and a blow-dry. Deanna did my hair and she was great, she understood that I only wanted a tiny tiny bit taken off and made my highlights come out exactly how I wanted them - it couldn't have looked any better. The package I got only cost $110, which was a great deal for this place. I wish the partial highlights were less expensive though, so that I can easily maintain them in the future but you definitely get what you pay for. I plan on quitting smoking soon, so hopefully then I will have extra cash to keep up with my highlights:-) The only con was the parking...as it is Back Bay. I managed to find a lot at Shawmut and Berkeley for $12/day. Throughout my history with salons, I have never really stayed with one stylist because I moved around too much. Now that I'm settled here in Boston indefinitely, I can afford to find one. After my stylist, Kerri, moved to another salon (see my review of Linear), I decided to take the plunge and follow her to Escape. It's not immediately close to a T stop, but I soon found that it's super easy to get to from both the Green and Orange lines. Escape is tucked away on Waltham Street amongst apartment buildings and thus can be easy to miss. As soon as I got there, Kerri was able to see me. The interior is smaller than Linear Salon, and it definitely wasn't as pamper-y. There was no tea, no pre-wash massage, and no little fiber-optic constellations in the ceiling to gaze at while getting your hair washed. However, I gave Escape the full 5 stars because of the fantastic service. I confessed to Kerri about my hair indiscretion (see my Lord & Lady's review), and she set to work right away to fix the problem. She knows just how to make my hair look gorgeous, which it always does after I've come from seeing her. She's also very honest in her opinions, and will tell you outright if she thinks a certain style won't look good on you. I left Escape 45 minutes later a new woman. I paid a little more than I did at Linear ($60 for the cut itself, and then I threw in a big tip). Kudos to you, Escape, for getting Kerri, and for having a great salon overall. UPDATE (07/18/07): I am in even more love with Escape, if that's possible. Yesterday I took the plunge and got color (red AND blond highlights in a pixie-cut type style) courtesy of my stylist. It looks so incredibly fierce and rad and all those other words I use to describe something I like! Also, props to Kerri for not just doing a kickass job on the cut and color, but for also being honest and suggesting a shampoo and conditioner for my newly-dyed locks that wouldn't break the bank. I recently started using the Escape Salon in the Prudential Center. I have been there twice now. I have seen Iram Farid both times and both times I have loved my cut and color. I have curly hair and she took her time and cut my hair right. She listened and guided me with the color and I have received many compliments at work. She is definitely an experienced and knowledgeable stylist. The atmosphere is a busy one. Lots of bustle, locals and tourists, friendly staff will welcome you (I was offered coffee and water immediately and they were happy to hang my coat and take my umbrella). I will definitely be going back there and would recommend it to a friend. read more

There are few beauty-related mishaps more devastating than a bad haircut. This is especially true for those of us with curly hair.stylists who know what they are doing are few and far between and the margin for error is enormous: at worst I leave salons looking like an extra from a Soul-Glo commercial, at best I leave with the asexual messy bob. It is next to impossible to find a cut that is actually flattering AND maximizes the curls. I was so emotionally scarred from my last 'do that I waited for almost a year to go back to a stylist. I had heard about Wendy through a few friends who had sung her praises and rightfully so. The woman is an absolute gem: kind, funny and best of all incredible at what she does. I left the salon feeling like a million bucks, and I only had to spend $60. I would have spent that just to chat with her and her colleagues, such a warm and entertaining bunch. I go into the salon lots of times having no idea what I want and trust him enough to know I will end up with something beautiful! I feel like I have tried a million hair places in Boston and hadn't found the perfect balance between price and quality. Douglas gives me an amazing haircut every time I come in here. It's not nearly as expensive as some of the salons around downtown and Newbury and I'm always much happier with my results here than anywhere else. For as long as I live in Boston, he will be cutting my hair. I have also gone to him for Keratin Straightening treatments, which have all turned out excellent. Some stylists who do straightening treatments are not thorough and you end up with sections of hair that aren't straight. Douglas has always leaves me with perfectly straight hair. read more

Chara slacked off after she "had" me (as a client). I had my hair cut three times with Chara, and the quality of the haircut went down each time. I have fine, straight hair, so mistakes in haircuts really show. I told Chara this, and, the first time she cut my hair, she gave me a solid fauxhawk that was really even on both sides and that looked really slick. I loved it and got compliments. The next time, she rushed through it. It was heavy on top; she didn't take the time to layer it so it would stand up evenly. Also, I had asked for it to be really tight and even in the back, like a man's business haircut. Iinstead, she used the thinning shears to heavily texturize the back, so instead of tight and even, it looked fuzzy, like cat fur, it was all different lengths, and you could see my scalp. The third time was similar, but this time she also used the thinning shears all over the pieces in front of my ears, so that they had this "fluffy" look. I had specifically asked for sharp points in front of my ears. Instead, I got fluffs, and the fluffs were uneven. All in all, apparently Chara does have the talent, but only uses it when she knows it counts. Once she had me as a client, she slacked off. Chara *could* be doing good work, but didn't put in the effort. Two stars, because even when she wasn't trying, Chara did decently, better than some folks I've seen who *were* trying and did terribly. Still, I'd keep looking. read more

Micayla has been cutting my hair for four years. She is an excellent stylist and I highly recommend her. I have a bob and every time she cuts it to perfection which is amazing because there is no room for error for short hairstyles. The cut lasts for four months and I am able to style it on my own. Micayla also cuts my husband's unruly hair that tends to grow out BIG - she thins it so it always looks great and it grows in fabulously. The salon is clean and modern. Aveda products are fantastic, smell invigorating, they are made from plants and contain no sulfates. read more

I used to have a really cute haircut - short and bouncy and super easy to take care of. Then I moved to Boston and 3 traumatic haircuts later I look like Shaun Cassidy in his Hardy Boys days - and not in a good way. The worst, by far, was the cut I just got from Cheryl at Escape Salon. I'd already given up on having cute short hair again, so I went in telling her I wanted to grow it out. I gave very specific details of what I like - easy to care for, chunky layers - and dislike - overly blended, razored, stringy and long on the bottom, shelf-like on the top. 50 minutes and $50 + tip later, I ended up with everything I told her I hated. Who razors 2" pieces into someone who says they're trying to grow their hair out? Part way through I asked her to stop razoring it, so instead she went to town with the thinning shears, creating a horrendously unattractive, flat, overly layered disaster. By the end I was so horrified I couldn't think of what to say. I went home hoping it'd be better once I washed it, but it only got worse - and it takes me twice as long to take care of in the morning. Hideous. And so short that I can't go back and ask her to fix it (not that I would trust that she could) - I'd end up bald if anyone tried to take more off. If you're looking for someone to listen to your likes and dislikes and to give you a cute short haircut, don't go here. My quest for a decent Boston hairdresser continues; I'm the one in the hat. read more

Good service. Nice atmosphere. Best haircut in years. Hubs and I each needed a haircut after traveling halfway across the country. We were exploring the shops at the Prudential Center and decided to try Escape. They were able to get us in about 4 hours after we inquired about appointments. My cut was with Amy. She was really nice and did a fantastic job. I used to go to an Aveda Institute in TX so I was reassured by her 5 year tenure as an instructor at an Institute. I told her what I needed and she did a fantastic job of achieving it! After 4 years of wandering around without an amazing stylist, I'm happy to have found a fantastic one within 24 hours of arriving at our new home in Boston! I would probably put 5 stars on here, but $75 for a women's cut (before tip, and that's on the low end of the range here) is a bit high for me. I'm used to $60 including tip in San Antonio. The men's cut for Hubs was $50. That's a lot. I realize I'm in Boston now, but still... My cut was worth it though, I'll say that! read more

I'm changing my review since the only reasons I gave it 5 stars was because of Wendy, although the other hair dressers are pretty nice and seem to do a good job. Wendy has moved over to Revive. I went to this salon probably at least 8-10 times and was never that impressed with the salon itself. On more than one occassion I was spoken to abruptly by receptionist staff and I never got that welcoming feeling whenever I called or walked in the door to spend my money. The place is kind of cramped: the kitchen is the same place as the hair washing station and even though I'm not eating there, it seems a bit odd getting your hair washed while staring at a pizza box. A couple of times on warm days it would be hot in the salon and they wouldn't have the AC going so you'd be roasting as hot hair dryer would be aimed at your head. I get it's a small business and expense is always a concern, but if I'm paying South End prices, I am looking for a more comfortable experience. read more

Love love love my balayage by Olivia. She is on point and does her work so well. Going from brunette to blonde takes time! But each session is awesome and I've loved my hair through the entire process. One more session and I'm fully blonde balayage. I'm a die hard Aveda girl. I absolutely love their products, but its talented hair dressers like NIkki Ruby that keep me on the hunt for the perfect Aveda salon with each city that I've moved to. I'm a natural mousey brown/blonde and since moving to Boston she has taken me from bright red (her specialty) to blonde, and now to a beautiful brown to blonde ombre. I completely trust her with my hair and have never left the salon disappointed. Nikki Ruby knows what she's doing. I made a last minute appointment and luckily they have an open spot. The receptionist was friendly and helpful. I was offered water or tea when I arrived and glad I chose their tea. It was delicious! My hairstylist was Jade. Oh boy, I'm so thankful she was my stylist! She gave me the best shampoo experience and my haircut is gorgeous! FYI, I only had an hour to spare and she managed to squeeze in a relaxing head massage, gave me a beautiful haircut, and blow dried my hair with style good enough for an event! I normally hate going to salons because I find it boring but Jade made the experience so pleasant I didn't want to leave the place. Front desk staff is very courteous, each time I've visited or called for an appointment I've had a pleasant experience. My first visit was just to shop with a friend when we found out the Aveda store is no longer in the Copley Mall and were told about the salon. They have all the amazing products and if you are an Aveda member points count and they do the birthday experience! I've been in for a haircut and full color with Sophia. She was great, she listened to what I wanted saw my pictures and did something to fit me. I'd definitely recommend stopping in! read more

We have been seeing Kris and love her! This review is for Kris specifically. A friend recommended as good for kids and when I initially called, my daughter, elementary school age, was set up with Kris. At our first appointment she listened to me, then went down to my daughter's level and asked her what she wanted, what she liked best/least about her hair... She took that into consideration and went to work. The cut was great, not really what I wanted, BUT, it was what my daughter wanted and in retrospect, I am very happy that Kris listed to my daughter and we happily returned to her for subsequent visit. Kris added some color to my daughter's hair and did so beautifully! It is discreet and yet adds just the right amount of sass. We all love it! Kris was thoughtful in her approach, and made suggestions to make sure the result was what my daughter was looking for. Recently I also switched to Kris and am happy as well. read more

Tamas is the best! Not only does he give a great hair cut, but he also taught me about some affordable products to use to strengthen and condition my very dry hair. He is fun to talk with as well- he's very easygoing and makes you feel comfortable about being there. Sometimes going to the hairdresser can be intimidating and you leave with a cut that's not you- but Tamas listens to what you want and puts a spin on it that makes it look great! I've been really impressed and would highly recommend visiting him. Oh and PS: if you're worried about parking in the South End- there is 2 hour parking in front of the salon or meter parking on Washington Street. read more
