2 years in with Sarah and Bella, and this is easily the best salon in Boston (I've probably tried them all). It's pricey and the fee structure is unusual--let's get that out of the way--but If you're looking for stylish LA loft vibes salon with talented, down to earth staff, and you're normal--I mean, you have realistic expectations about your hair, what it can/cannot do/become, and you understand 2025 salon prices--this is the jam. Sarah does my color. She really listens. She really cares. She's REALLY talented. She's done something I didn't think could be done: taken me from coloring my roots every month to gray blended so skillful and pretty that people think I'm naturally blonde. They don't really see the gray, which is insane. Now I get color every 3-4 months and could probably go longer. Bella cuts my hair. First of all, she's the coolest. 6 feet tall, can (and does) wear anything. Her blowouts are crazy good and have that indefinable perfectly imperfect quality. I'm heading down to the salon in a few minutes. It's been five months since she last cut it. I could go longer, but I'm entering my My Montecito Summer in MayWinter Boston phase and want the clavicut, whatever collarbone length bobs are called. I have (Sarah created) blonde hair--wavy, white lady. I see Bella doing cool cuts in people with textured hair, too. Grace also does epic blowouts and is the cutest. Can't wait to see what she does once she's optimized as a stylist! This review is long because it's easy to keep talking about a place you love, and because I see some Yelpers taking some truly bizarre shots at the salon. Made an appointment well in advance (August) for November so that I could have my hair nicely done for Thanksgiving and family photos. Organized childcare etc and traveled into the city for the appointment. After receiving multiple text and email confirmations all week I show up and they tell me the stylist actually moved and I "fell through the cracks." Just not a good experience and so bummed I couldn't get my hair done as planned. read more

Wow. . .Just WOW. . I can honestly say Gina gave me the best haircut of my entire life. She is a creative genius. When I got home from my haircut, my sister said "um, did you get hair extensions? how does your hair look silkier and somehow longer after getting a hair CUT?" One name - GINA. This salon has a low key, no fuss vibe. My stylist took the time to talk to me and get a sense of what I wanted. She explained every step of the cut to me as well, why she was cutting at certain angles and explaining her overall strategy. I told her I was concerned about that coz I have a tender head. I visited this new salon during their soft opening process . They are still going through the stages of getting acclimated in their new spot but it was still a great experience . It has a very chic eclectic atmosphere . Sometimes high end salons can have a catty , side eye " you can't sit with us " pretentious feel and that is defiantly not the case here . My stylist was Victorio , he was wonderful .My hair was long and long overdue for a haircut . He knows how to communicate with his clients , doesn't " shame " you for neglecting your hair . The communication was fabulous throughout the process . He made sure to walk me through every major step which I find key in any big change . Nothing worse than an overly confident stylist who just chops your hair off to their pleasing and then asks if you like it after there's no going back . Had a truly awful experience here. Extremely overpriced and terrible service. I was doubled booked for a service that should have been priced as one and was told we'd be able to achieve my desired look if we did this. I ended up leaving with bright orange hair and terribly blended roots that I could have done better myself at home. Tried contacting them with my concerns afterward and no one responded - they simply don't care. Never received service so poor from a salon in my life. Seriously, go elsewhere, there are so many better options. Now have to spend more money trying to fix the work that she did. read more

I recently got my hair cut and styled by Bella, an asst cut specialist, and I couldn't be happier. Bella asked me exactly what I wanted in a cut and delivered. First of all, I have been a client at spoke and weal for at least the past two years. Alessandra cuts my hair, and is amazing (which is why this is so discouraging) but the overall service of the salon for its price is poor. I got keratin in three months ago, and I called back today because I had not gotten keratin on my baby hairs or bangs (but still paid the full price) and my baby hairs had gotten curly and looked out of place with the rest of my hair. Upon my call I was informed it would be minimum $100-150 to keratin my baby hairs. Although I had paid the entire price before, and again did not get keratin on my baby hairs, it would have been half the price I paid for almost my entire head of hair. Super disappointed. Expected a lot more and am sad to now have to change salons. read more

I was going to Spoke & Weal in San Francisco so when I moved back to Boston I was excited to see they'd just opened a salon here. I went to Elyse for a custom color and she far exceed my expectations especially for being a picky client. She took the time to look at the pictures I brought in, share more of her own and ask questions. She was invested in wanting me to leave happy and nail exactly what I was looking for. Spoke & Weal is consistently about color education to their clients which is huge. I'm a medium blonde with a balayage root and wanted to leave feeling brighter and root lifted. Her technical skill was impeccable. The color was amazing and I had no hard root lines which is something I really struggle with in finding a new (great) colorist. I highly recommend Elyse!! Courtney is your go to for color! I first started going to her at the Spoke and Weal in New York, now I make the trip to Boston to see her. She does an awesome job with natural highlights. Since I have to go longer between appointments, she makes sure that the color still looks natural when my hair grows out. I love the Boston Salon, it's open and airy with great natural light. Gina is a magician. I came in with a very uneven, blocky haircut that did not do much styling wise. I had no real guidance for Gina on what I wanted, but leaving my head in her hands was probably the best thing I could've done. I was late to my appt and she still assured me it was no issue. She took her time, cut what seemed like every hair perfectly and diligently. She checked in with me to make sure I was comfortable and made adjustments as needed. Everyone was kind and professional. Some salons can be snooty if you aren't a fancy looking person, but this isn't one of them. Everything is clean and pretty. The cut and color experiences were great. They listened to my needs even though I didn't treacle know what I wanted. They even looked at photos online so we could narrow down a color. I visited the salon on Wednesday, November 25th for a trim with the head stylist. I had never worked with her before but her Instagram photos and her reviews were impressive. I asked for a trim, I made it clear that I did not want to take more than half an inch off. At least 4 inches were taken off my hair. She also "thinned" it which has left visible holes in my hair. I have included the original photo for you to see what my hair looked like- notice the hair on the R is styled to look longer as the cut style. Presently I have long strands of hair on the left side. I informed the salon immediately that I was unhappy. The cut created multiple areas of hair standing straight up in the back and out from the sides. I asked to not have hair on my neck- the hair is so short in the back that I can't put my hair up. I asked to not cut more than 1/2 an inch and there were 4 inches removed. I asked to have the same exact cut I arrived with just trimmed and I got this nightmare. It took 6 days for the salon to respond. They responded with a "you've been refunded" through a text message. No apology. No offer to correct the nightmare of a hair cut- a PRIME opportunity to FIX the HORROR they created. After posting an Instagram Reel I got a message LIZ ( who has no title at the bottom of the email) saying that the team had alerted her about my email but "oops" she forgot to respond. I am a business owner myself. I have had to reschedule thousands of dollars in video materials and have had 2 different consults for my hair since last week. This studio needs a major class in customer service, empathy, and frankly business skills. Don't waste your time or money- they won't care when they destroy your hair. read more

Gina is the best. I can't believe it took me this long to think about writing a review, but she's ruined any other salon for me. She cares, explains, and suggests (gently and kindly) if what you ask for doesn't exactly match the look you have in your head. Not all of us know what the heck hair is, and she's really perceptive to that. She's professional, knowledgable, and down to earth. If you're a student, it's pricey, but worth it. You know what you're getting and the piece of mind is worth it, imo. Vanessa and Sadé are also extremely knowledgable about color, and everyone makes sure to keep the stylists and colorists well educated. Great environment, not judgmental at all. If I shaved off all my hair (think Brittany Spears meltdown-esque), these are the ladies I'd trust to make me look okay again. read more

Gina at Spoke and Weal was amazing! I had this awful choppy haircut from another salon and Gina was so amazing and fixed my hair. She didn't have much to work with but now that it's grown out it looks even better! I would definitely go there again because she has magic hands. FYI the other place I went to claimed that they had 15 years of experience, but he didn't ask about the intricacies of my hair like Gina did. I got a balayage with Courtney (@courtneybrennancolorist) and a cut with Gina (@styledwithg) and I loved the outcome. Spoke & Weal gave me such a great service overall and both Courtney and Gina took the time to get to know me, my hair routine, my concerns, and what I was looking for. The consultation before the actual hair coloring and cut was so educational for me and got them to know me and my hair better as well as allowing me to learn more about myself and them! I ABSOLUTELY love how my hair turned out and it's exactly what I wanted and, in my opinion, even better. Both of them, also, were extremely friendly and I had such fun conversations with them that made the time fly by. I absolutely LOVED the service that I got when I went for a trim with Gina. It was my first time, and I was a bit worried because I have a hard time trusting new salons especially with haircuts. I have very thick and long hair that had some slightly uneven layers that needed to be fixed. Sadé and I think Vanessa (?) helped me first and they were so awesome. We chatted about hair coloring (where I learned Sadé was the color specialist who did her own and Vanessa hair and it looked amazing) and I could tell that they really prioritize maintaining hair integrity while achieving beautiful color. It made me feel comfortable to come back for coloring in the future. Gina did an EXCELLENT job with my cut. She explained everything thoroughly and made sure the length was exactly what I wanted and made adjustments accordingly. She made me feel heard and i could tell she wanted my hair to look and feel great. I will most definitely be coming back for future cuts and coloring! read more

I can confidently say I had the best haircut of my life here! I've had some not so great experiences in the past with my haircuts not coming out too great, and so I tried to do as much research as possible to find a place I could trust. I found Spoke & Weal through my search and booked an appointment with Alessandra. The studio is on the second level of a lovely Newbury Street brownstone and is bright, clean, and airy. The receptionist was welcoming and asked me to go into a dressing room to change into a large t shirt or robe. She then hung up my coat and sweater and took me to my chair, offering me tea or water. I then had a really kind young woman give me a small neck and shoulder massage to start, then she took me over to the sink to wash my hair, where she proceeded to give me a scalp massage. I was literally in heaven. She then did my blow dry and proceeded to have a really nice and friendly conversation with me. Once my blow dry was done Alessandra came over and talked to me about what I wanted to do with my cut. I told her I wasn't picky, but just wanted some movement and texture to my hair. She knew exactly what to do and started doing a dry cut, having me stand up and turn my head at different angles to cut it to perfection. She even asked if she could curl it at the end and did an amazing job (and they didn't charge me for the curl!). All together it was $60, which is incredibly reasonable for all of what was included. Everyone there was so nice and welcoming and I felt very comfortable. I've definitely found my new hair salon and am going to stick around here for quite a while! read more
