When we moved to Portland, our children were already preteens and teenagers, and we knew we couldn't afford to get this decision wrong. Cathedral has been exactly what we were hoping for (and my high schooler is a bit upset he was never able to attend). The environment is both energetic and welcoming. The teachers are professional, genuinely caring, and excellent at what they do. The elementary and middle school years are all about building a strong foundation, and that's exactly what students receive from day one. Every child is truly seen, known, and supported, due to the small class sizes. Teachers understand their students not just academically, but personally -- and that kind of attention makes a lasting difference. Academically, the program is both thoughtful and rigorous. While it may not specifically market itself as STEM-focused, there's a strong and consistent emphasis on critical thinking, problem-solving, and preparing students for high school -- it honestly feels more STEM-driven than it claims. At the same time, the arts and music programs are fantastic and add so much depth to the overall experience. The teachers are true professionals in their respective fields, bringing both expertise and passion to the classroom. Graduates leave confident and exceptionally well-prepared, going on to outstanding Catholic and independent high schools, as well as advanced programs within public schools. Just as important is the culture. The school community is safe, respectful, and grounded in kindness and accountability. There is very little tolerance for bullying -- something we've unfortunately experienced elsewhere -- and issues are handled appropriately and proactively. Character development isn't just talked about; it's part of daily life. Although rooted in Catholic values, Cathedral is welcoming and inclusive of families from a wide range of faith backgrounds. The location truly can't be beat. Yes, it's downtown, and like many urban areas there have been a few challenging years -- but the school prioritizes safety at every level. Security is strong, and any concerns (which, thankfully, have been minimal to none) have always been addressed quickly and appropriately. We've consistently felt that student safety is taken seriously and handled with care. Lastly, my high schooler is now in advanced classes (high school), and I've noticed that many of his classmates also came from Cathedral. That says a lot. The foundation they're building there clearly sets students up for long-term success -- the school must be doing something very right. If you're looking for a PK-8 school where your child will be challenged academically, supported emotionally, and truly known by dedicated teachers, Cathedral School is an outstanding choice.

The academics are challenging and students are held to high standards. Behavior issues are addressed directly and thoughtfully, and while middle school naturally comes with some social ups and downs, concerns like bullying are taken seriously and handled appropriately from what I've seen. Communication from teachers and staff has been great; I appreciate being kept in the loop, even about small things like when a student isn't paying attention, because it shows how engaged and attentive the teachers are. The teachers! Absolutely top notch and very hard working. No one is checked out. I also love that 6th-8th graders have the chance to be part of a leadership program and are encouraged to serve their school and the wider community. It's been wonderful to see students given real responsibilities at school events. Overall, it feels like a supportive, structured environment where priorities revolve around academics and student success.

I have experience with other quality Portland childcare centers and with nannies, but Sweet Day School has been the best. My son loves imagination yoga, and always wants to stay a little longer when I arrive to pick him up. I have complete trust in the teachers to care for him, let's be honest, even better than I probably would. The school's and teachers' obvious respect for children and commitment to the environment and community is evident in everything they do. This is a terrific gem of a school!

Please do not pre-pay any amount more than necessary, and do not trust Angela Molloy Murphy to follow basic codes of decency or fairness in any business interaction! Protect yourself.

I should say "are" because we are still close with Angela, her family, and the other families who attended the school. My oldest daughter was welcomed into the school at age 3 and she spent the next three years growing, exploring, challenging and thriving. My second daughter was a part of the community from the day she was born and while she's a very different child from her sister she found the same nurturing educational environment. One of the things I most admire about Angela is her ongoing enthusiasm of early childhood education and the fact that she is always evolving her school based on new information and what are the needs of the children in the classroom at that moment. I went from a somewhat nervous new preschool mom, asking a million questions all the time, to knowing that whatever was going on in Angela's classroom was fun, exciting, and appropriate for the kids. I see that Cedar L, below, questions Angela's ethics; I find this laughable. Angela is one of the most generous, honest and straightforward people I know. In the course of our nine-year relationship I think we've had to have a few conversations where something had to be worked out, as is to be expected when you're doing business with someone, and that's what a preschool is--a business, after all. I don't even remember exactly what those things were due to Angela's they lovely way working through small conflicts and preserving great relationships.

Teacher Allisen is great with the kids and at choosing developmentally appropriate activities, projects and books. The focus is social development and community building. The community is attentive and kind. I was very impressed by the leadership shown during the current national health crisis. The president and the rest of the board members showed great attentiveness and concern for community members without panicking. Best of all, the children are just crazy about each other and very kind.

My son has grown so much in the classroom. His social skills blossomed towards the end of his initial preschool year, and he made his first deep friendship. I can't wait to see what the next year holds. The mixed age classroom is special because it allows older children to model for and mentor the younger children. 4. Teacher Penny has an incredible ability to connect with each student and assess their needs. She has great patience for young children and shows no favoritism to any student. I think all children feel truly seen by her, and this builds their confidence and sense of self. 5. Being a parent is challenging, but with the support of other parents it feels much easier to be the parent I want to be. Tigard High School was the location for the The Compassion Tigard Clinic…read more I'm a dental hygienist who volunteers with Medical Teams International Dental Van a couple times a year. The Van is all over the Portland Metro area at different times a year. I had no idea the Van would be part of this Compassion Clinic. It was awesome. What a great community event. Tigard High gets a gold star for hosting this event. Wooo Hoo!!!! I had a great time.
