Emilia and two other assistants help run the party. We opted for the extra time with dancing, music, and bubbles; and I thought it was a great way to break up the time between painting and cake. (The kids loved it, too.) There are a lot of awesome pieces to choose from - something for everyone. There are also coloring pages if anyone needs an additional sit down activity. PPP did a great job with decorations. There's truly no need to bring additional ones. Thank you for taking care of serving the food and clean up! Estelle did not have anything prepared ahead of time and was 15 minutes late. The assistant who was there to greet us seemed unhappy and annoyed that we were there and did not let us know Estelle was running late. When Estelle started the class there was no greeting or introduction and no instruction as to what the girls would be doing. She split the girls into two tables but the assistants were not able to give instructions so each table had to wait while Estelle worked with the other table. One of the assistants just kept rolling her eyes at the girls and repeating "I'm not the chef" and pointing to Estelle and saying to listen but there was no way for them to listen to the instruction because she was demonstrating with her back to them at the other table. So most of the time the girls were just sitting around waiting for instructions. When my co-leader tried to step in and help give instruction Estelle was extremely rude to her, and in front of the kids! The kids barely got to do any cooking. They basically just measured some ingredients into bowls and poured them into cupcake tins. These girls were between 9-14 years old and they have all been doing that since they were 3 and 4 years old. We thought they would be learning more than prepping ingredients and stirring ingredients around. When we asked if the girls would be doing any of the actual cooking Estelle told us she couldn't have them working with the hot oven. I asked my girls when we got home what they thought and they said it was boring and they didn't get to do any cooking, that Estelle did everything for them. The pictures of the shop online look nothing like what it actually looks like in person, which was very run down with stuff piled everywhere, no pastries in the cases, some dead plants in the window and very dirty. The fact that Estelle charged us $900, which is money the girls made themselves selling cookies, felt like a huge scam. I'm so bummed we wasted their hard earned money and our time at Estelle Gourmet.

The fact that a store…read morewith this kind of character and charm has decided to stick it out speaks to the commitment Corinne (owner) and John (GM) have to offering this unique blend of vintage movies, sports, and collectibles to the community. And like any brick and mortar store, profit margins are tight. That said, in numerous business encounters, I've found pricing to be beyond fair and reasonable. But this is not eBay, Amazon or Walmart. They simply can't "meet or beat" any price when their inventory might be limited in a certain category and/or procured at a price point they can't simply ignore. I would hope a community that wants to see stores like this thrive would appreciate that it must be supported, not by blindly overpaying for product, but understanding that much of the store's stock of merchandise has come to it through many channels and being ok with modest premiums on some (by no means all) items over what you'll find on the internet (where there is no tangible relationship between the parties and the transactions are cold and detached--where the provenance of more esoteric items is questionable at best). Unfortunately, I've seen the store have to put up signs discouraging haggling and rummaging through product. This isn't an ancient Arabian bazaar where you have to haggle for every dollar and deal or you'll lose credibility. It's a business with dedicated individuals trying to offer a welcoming and unique space while pricing the best they can within their modest profit margin targets. And this is not a clubhouse or an extension of your den. Please try to treat the store, merchandise, and humans working here with respect and graciousness. I promise you'll get it in return. And because this is not your play room, but a store catering to the public (many of which come equipped with video security), do not have some misguided expectation that you can berate or criticize the store, its pricing or product and maintain your "privacy". Others in the community who shop here can see and hear you, you're not in your house. And everyone has cell phone cameras that capture any number of public interactions every second of the day. If common decency has no sway over how you carry yourself in public, at least understand that you can't simply carry on with impunity and expect to be cloaked in anonymity. In short, I encourage my fellow patrons to please not let scrounging for the next deal or the impulse to try and nickel and dime the store, because it is unique and accessible, create an atmosphere like so many other impersonal chain stores. Where the desperation to get a better deal, and not (ever) to feel like we've overpaid, turns us into the epitome of lowbrow consumer who doesn't even seem to enjoy the experience. If we think we deserve better, let's try to act our best when shopping at Perfectly Centered and elsewhere in town, and we might just end up being right.

I knew nothing about this place before arriving so I had absolutely no expectations. Five minutes into our tour, I realized that this place is gold. We were led through aisles and aisles and aisles of gently used donated materials. Here is a "short" list of some of the things that MFTA has for you. -Paper, zippers, beads, books, playbills, programs, posters, wood, full mannequin bodies and mannequin body parts, travel sized containers, glass containers, spools of thread, fabric, leather scraps, computers, printers, binders, tables, plastic containers, metal parts, labels....the list goes on for days. What's the catch?!? Not much actually. You do need a membership to reap the benefits, but if you are a teacher at a public school or work for a non-profit, everything is FREE! And don't you dare think that after a few teachers fill up cartloads of materials that you missed your chance. This place is enormous and donations are consistently flowing through their doors. Once you've filled up your cart (or your 5 carts), your only form of payment is a thank you. MFTA asks that you send a thank you to each company that you've "purchased" from. Just a few donors that Omar (our enthusiastic & informative tour guide) mentioned were Google, Macy's and Disney. Wait artists, there is more! If you create any form of art using MFTA's materials, they have a studio for you to work in right next to their warehouse of materials. Once your piece is complete, they will even showcase your work in their gallery. I don't know about you, but I'm amazed. Set up a school trip, rent a uhaul to stock up on supplies or just grab your toothbrush and move in. MFTA is an A+ in my book.
