So I spent three months living in Lucca this year and one of my favorites was Da Gigi! The staff here is awesome, catering mostly to locals which is evident if you want to eat here cuz it's hard to get in without a reservation. Everything here is delicious and authentic but my favorites were the tordelli luccesi ( a local must try!), the pork chop w apples and the daily risotto - if you're lucky it will be the hot pink beet version which is INSANELY delicious! A beautiful homely local Lucca establishment that was highly recommended and worth it. From the friendly and attentive service, the quaint and comfortable setting, the homemade local flavors and perfectly cooked food, this was a beautiful experience. We had the tortelli, the gnocchi, the burrata and the beef stew. All delicious with a bottle of the vento dell'ovest red wine. Always our first and favorite stop in Lucca. Generally you must have a reservation because the entire town knows about this cozy rustic unpretentious gem which has never disappointed. A favorite dish is the pork filet with apples and roasted potatoes, with a caramelized apple glaze (filetto di maiale). The glaze elevates the tender herb seasoned pork to another level. The lasagna was a lunch special. It was thick with light cheese and sauce but still delicious. We also recommend the tagliata di manzo (sliced steak) with aromatic herbs. The prices are reasonable. This is one where I read the other reviews and I wonder what happened during my visit. I can see from the pictures of others that we were at the same restaurant but I clearly disagree with most others who came here. We were here on a tour bus and even the tour guide recommended that we go here. It started out well enough. The server was nice and spoke excellent English. Things got bad as soon as the drinks arrived. We ordered wine...no wine glasses. Just rocks glasses. My kids were having a hard time opening their soda cans. As soon as I grabbed one to help, I found out why...the soda was frozen. Once the server finally came back outside to the patio and I explained the soda issue, she agreed and then disappeared for an inordinate amount of time and finally brought two new (unfrozen) cans of soda. By this time, I had noted that there was a concentration of heat coming from the awning that we were under. It was a hot day, but we were shaded by the building. It was also odd that the temperature-controlled mist-sprayers were constantly cycling. So I pointed out that the infrared heaters in the awning were on and could they please turn them off? Although the server and other customers agreed with the problem, the owner came out and declared that they weren't on and there was no problem. We finally got food. It was average. I drank my wine, which was average (might have been better in a proper glass!) I was pretty annoyed at this point that I was sitting under a space heater, getting misted, and now losing time for touring Lucca. No sign of the server. I finally went inside and found them. They seemed surprised that I tracked them down. We settled the bill and I left to go cool down in the sun. read more

We stopped here while in Lucca for a late lunch. They were so friendly and helpful with our limited Italian. We were a party of 4 and had no trouble getting a table. Hubby and I had the ravioli with meat sauce. BIL had a spicy pasta dish, and SIL had the gnocchi. We all loved our dishes. The house wines were not very good, but the service was great. As you can tell I have been reviewing restaurants for a while and can spot a tourist restaurant from a mile away. We were looking for somewhere to eat on line and chose to make a reservation here. How you know it's not going to be good: Bad olive oil, hamburger on the menu, multiple chicken dishes and not one local person in the place. (All foreign) Other glaring issues: 1. Waitress could care less about service and does not even bring wine list. 2. When she brings wine she drops on table and doesn't offer to taste first or even pour in glasses. 3. Ordered mix of salami and cheeses. She drops on table but could care less about it. Did not explain meats or cheeses. And the meats were bad quality. 4. The plate of meat and cheeses was two small wedges of cheeses.. FOR THE WHOLE TABLE. 5. The pasta dishes come out and they were over cooked,(gnocchi and tagliatelle) My tortelli was too much salt too. Just terrible 6. They could care less if everything is ok or if it is to our liking... just thrown on table and never came back 7. Never offered refill on bottles of water. We were empty within the first 5 minutes of sitting. 8. Never offered dessert or asked about meal. 9. Finally asked for check but never came back to get. Had to go inside to pay. This is your typical bad Italy restaurant that has lost its way but since they keep getting tourists to come they won't change there ways. I hate having a bad meal in Italy but after three weeks in Umbria and Tuscany it happened. Don't walk away..... run! This is a neighborhood gem with great service and wonderful food. Gigi Trattoria is just around the corner from the apartment we rented in Lucca so we ended up there by accident the first time and definitely on purpose the second time around. It's a restaurant where you feel instantly welcome. Its small deck is inviting and surrounded by enough vegetation to make you forget the parking lot you are next to. The inside spaces are also very warm and you might find yourself setting next to an actual working 1960s-era Electrolux fridge that manages this small restaurant's bottled water. While the servers are very nice, it's the gentleman who acts as sort of a host, manager, bus boy and floater that makes the experience. He's chatty and friendly and wants to make sure everyone is enjoying himself. Our favorite dish was the Tortelli, which is a Luchese tradition of pasta stuffed with meat served with a meat ragu on top. It's flavorful and satisfying. While it is only meant as a first course and priced as such, we found it made a great dinner when combined with some tomato/onion/celery/bread salad and, of course, dessert. In my opinion, Tortelli at Gigi Trattoria is one of those "must haves" if you are in Lucca for a meal. Because the service is so good, dinner almost goes too fast here. That's not meant as a complaint. It's just that this restaurant is so enjoyable that you want to just hang out, sample a few more things and sip a little more wine and talk to your charming host. I highly recommend Gigi Trattoria, especially if you are staying inside the wall in Lucca. It's a short walk for a slice of what feels like home in Tuscany. Really enjoyable little place on a side street in Lucca. Quiet square, but only a block off of the busier main streets. It was a little bit cold for sitting outside when we were there - but it was definitely a great outdoor patio. We showed up at 8pm, right before the evening rush, it was still quite full when we left at 1130, and people were still showing up! Food was excellent, really enjoyable. We ate every speck on the table, trying the Spelt soup and the homemade pastas. The pasta sits in a little deli like counter, until the kitchen needs it - showing off that it truly is homemade. Dishes are good sized - but not massive, didn't feel overfull afterwards. Value was good, not a super expensive location, but certainly not the cheapest - great food for the price. The service was a bit inconsistent - one person was super happy, the other had absolutely no desire to talk to us at all and that was clear. Funny story: I was talking to the lady behind the cash register in my mangled Italian, and I asked her if she was "Gigi". She said, "No, but maybe 'Gigette'. Okay, I never write any reviews of hotels, bars or restaurants except it's absolutely outstanding and worth it. Giorgio's is one of the very few restaurants that deserves a review! To make a long story short: I tried pasta in all kinds of countries around the globe but Giorgio's homemade pasta is simply outstanding. I'm actually not able to put down in words how fantastic the pasta really is!!! Btw. the desert (give the homemade tiramisu a try) is great, too. The very friendly service, the interior (it doesn't make a lot of sense from a design point of view but is so freaking lovely and cosy)....just everything about this place makes you smile and come back again. Great place a few blocks from the main drags of Lucca. We arrive around noon (early lunch in Italy) and it was quite quiet but quickly filled with locals... always a good sign! The food was excellent for the price! An authentic Trattoria experience. We ordered a bunch of sides with our meals and they were delicious.
