I think I found my new shop. After being gone for almost a decade coming back to a nice local shop was such a a nice respite from it all. I couldn't find a website appointment system or social media so I just went in crossing my fingers it wasn't that busy and luckily it wasn't at all and I was easily helped. My barber was super friendly and turns out we had mutual friends so it was a nice throwback to baby days at school. I'd easily say he was the best fade I got since I got into cleaning my mop in high school. Shit looks immaculate and he took his time after fine tuning it for my and my chia pet hair. Saw this place on Yelp and decided to give it a try. My dad suffered a stroke about 4 weeks ago and just recently was discharged from PT rehab. My aunties tried their best to give him a haircut but one admitted she failed miserably. I'm from California and only here for one day and I'm trying to get my dad situated before I return back home. Another Yelp find gone completely right. Stumbled upon this barbershop on Yelp. Decided to give it a shot for my boys. I though some designs would be a want from the boys and decided to pick Richard based on photos and reviews. I called to make an appointment Wednesday afternoon. The scheduler was nice and able to put us down for appointments right after school. Thursday comes and we go straight after school. *Side note- GPS tells you it's right after the actual location. It's the "strip mall" right after Waipahu Depot Road heading towards Ewa.* When we arrive we were instantly greeted by the smiling receptionist and another barber. If you have an appointment, you don't have to sign in. If you are using Richard, I HIGHLY recommend an appointment. It was nice not being treated like a number or a "newbie." It's more of an in between of a salon and barbershop to be honest. The area is clean. They use the vacuum buzzers so there isn't hair everywhere. The receptionist cleans up the small amounts right away for the barbers in between cuts. It stays really clean and it's refreshing for sure. They offer chips for a snack or beverages out of their mini cooler. They aren't ripping you off either. Chips, drink...$.75. It's good for the kids while waiting. So my oldest son goes first and I show Richard the design and text both pictures to him. He was so nice and did an amazing job, see pics. The boys were so happy! Our youngest asked to now go their all the time because it's the first haircut that didn't hurt or get a cut/nick! If he is loving it, I know it's good because he hates getting his haircut. He was so excited about his design he wanted me to wash his hair to savor the colors and show off to his friends. My kids received several compliments and they are extremely happy. I was happy to with the professionalism, cleanliness, and quality. You now have a repeat customer. As a matter of fact, the husband who has gone to the same barber for almost 14 years is giving Richard a try tomorrow. :) read more

Updating review for my second visit. This time around I had Sandy as my barber, who I'm assuming is the owner of the barbershop because all the other barbers were calling her bossman. She did a phenomenal job with my haircut. All I needed to do was show her a picture and she hit it spot on. She was also easy to talk to which made the experience that much better. Will be looking forward to them opening at Ka Makana because it'll be closer to my residence which will make it much easier to get a haircut on a scheduled basis. The location didn't have much parking spots but fortunately my wife was able to drop me off and she went on to run errands. I waited for about 15 minutes after my reservation time before I got my hair cut but that's always understood for a barbershop which often runs a bit behind schedule. The barber that I was assigned to was Brad. Cool kid with some major skill. I asked whether I should fix my combover with my ideas but recommended to not do it because he said it would be tough and wouldn't make sense. I went with his recommendation and I was happy about the result. Looks like all of the barbers mesh well together and seem to have a real good time, full of jokes and laughs while they cut their customers. Every barber seemed to be pretty good so you'll be taken care of with whomever you are assigned to if you don't have a preference. Good atmosphere, the young man who cut my hair (forgot his name, fellow alum even if decades apart) very good talking with. Didn't know what kind of hair I wanted so pointed at one of the pictures and he made it exactly perfect. Don't usually get it cut that short but was great. I'm very impressed of this barber shop. It is located in a small building across St. Joseph church. It has limited parking structure but is doable. This barber shop seems to be having lots of regular customers & i have figured out why. the barbers are very friendly, local and outgoing. they never make work boring. they always talk to one another while they work and entertain customers and themselves at the same time. i highly recommend you making a appointment, if you don't want to wait for about 30 minutes minimum. they do take their time to make the hair cut and fades etc. so patient is key, when it comes to this barber shop. i believe that they're work is very good and they are all good in what they do. my boyfriend appointment was at 1 o clock. but did not get seated until around almost 1:30 which is okay, because they also do walk-ins as well. according to my boyfriend it is best to go in the morning, then the afternoon because they are quite busy during that time. read more

Da Kinez is by far the best barber shop I've been to in at least the past three years. From the top-shelf barbers to the fun atmosphere, I can't imagine their doing much more to craft a better experience for their patrons. Richard spent a total of five hours working to achieve my girlfriend's vision of silver-purple dye for her hair coloring. In addition to that, he cut a fresh trio of designs into her side- and back-shaves, the best of which incorporated her Filipino tribal tattoo. Richard also gave me my first undercut: a dope, original design which incorporated Aztec, Filipino, and Hawaiian elements. I've never been happier with a haircut, and that is all owed to Richard's vision and craftsmanship. Simply cannot recommend Da Kinez highly enough. Went there twice, both times while the covid policies were in place so I get that things won't always go according to plan and we're all somewhat dealing. First time we went here was good. After I talked my bf into getting his hair cut, we were told there was about a 45-minute wait because he was a walk-in. This is understandable and he got his haircut in 20-minutes. Second time my bf made an appointment and we showed up 5-minutes early. Waited 30-minutes more when he checked with the receptionist who apologized and explained only two barbers showed up and didn't know where the other barbers were. Two other customers came in after us and one of them rescheduled because of this. It was convenient location wise, but not worth any more of our time. read more

Been here 3 times most barbers are great you have to choose the right barber to cut your hair otherwise you'll get a new barber and enough said. My problem is 2 times they messed up on my appointments that I scheduled 1 day before for a certain Barber I saw my name on the Mickey Mouse schedule book of there's but I was overlooked so I told them I was upset that's why I'm not coming back because my time is important too like all the other customers . Cons-smelly maybe use some aromatherapy items? HOT-the AC is very weak. Get a stronger unit. Parking is limited, prepare to hunting for a parking stall that is the size of a golf cart. I have a fidgety preschooler who up until recently had a haircut maybe twice a year. He hated getting his hair cut! I used to take him to those cutesy places where they sit in a police car/fire truck/airplane chair. Usually a cute aunty would do his hair. Not the same experience. My kid, maybe not your kid, but MY kid, needs someone a little more authoritative explaining how to act in a chair. I think he feels more like a big boy getting his hair done in the company of other boys and men. Plus this place is way cheaper than those kid cut places. I rec making an appt and showing up early to get parking. After school, that place is packed! We usually see Jory but he's at their new Kapolei location. Hot damn! Did the walk-in experience and lucked out by getting setup with Noah. Fades are super clean! I had to stop him half way and say that my ish looked good. So good it would make you wanna slap yo mamma! The shop is a tight fit as it's tucked away on Farrington Highway. Parking is a bitch ladies and gentlemen but you can figure something out. I was surprised that they sell Layrite products. Haven't seen them on the island. I usually just see it all over Cali. Needless to say, I'm impressed on their love for the barber game. read more
