I am drawn like a bee to cajun/creole restaurants, even if they're in Edmonton, Alberta, and are made up as 50s diners. So I ordered the seafood jambalaya, which was a rather strange creation. Mixed with the rice was exactly one whole crawfish (that's right, the whole thing, although on a crawfish only the tailmeat is edible), clams, mussels, shrimp, and some baby scallops. Plus some vegetables, actually in greater profusion and frankly tastier: green peppers, zucchini (a little odd for jambalaya), and a lump of onions. "Whadya want for lunch?" is a pretty common question at our shop and sometime's the answer is "I NEED a Dadeo po'boy." More often then not we just phone in our order and drop in for a quick take away. The food is always fresh and tasy and the fried shrimp po'boy always manages to hit the spot. The few times we have actually gone in to the restaurant for a proper sit down never disappoints either. This place is just totally relaxing with good food and good service. The place for oysters in Edmonton, and they were serving sweet potato fries a decade before anyone else it town. The food here is absolutely great, and makes up for service that can be spotty and the issue of no minors. I am a fan who rarely goes because they have opted to declare themselves a bar and so children are not allowed. But given the very limited space they have, I actually agree with that choice even if it inconveniences me occasionally. As a long time devotee of their oyster po-boys, I remember the days when kids were allowed and how congested it was as parents of young kids crowded the single aisle with strollers or other kid-related gear. So parents (and non-parents) indulge yourself with great gumbo or sweet sticky ribs, do try the oysters either fried or raw. read more

I think this place should be featured on "Diners, Drive ins, and Dives". It is a cool little spot that puts out great food. The sweet potato fries here are top notch and the only complaint I could make is that you don't get enough! The po'boys are great and the classic pulled pork is one of my favorite meals in town! I am a fan, though I'd describe the cuisine as Cajun/Creole inspired and not as authentic Cajun or creole food. It's all simply too bland for to be authentic. There is a difference between food with the peppers and chili cooked in than adding hot sauce to it afterwards. What they do serve though is pretty good. First, the meal starts with little mini biscuits and jalapeno jelly, a great amusebouche. Then have some fritters, delicious deep fried balls of dough flavoured with corn, artichoke and crab with killer dipping sauce. Have the Four Tune and try the variety. The Gumbo is a good appetiser course as well. The Jambalaya or the Chicken and Ribs are good choices, but any one of the dozen or so Po' Boys are a great choice at a great price, light mayo on really good bread. I find the potato hash good, but a little heavy. Have the great sweet potato fries instead. A couple of years ago, I ordered the Red Beans and Rice. This is a Lousianna/Gulf staple. Red Beans slow cooked with salt pork and spices thickened with filé to the consistency of chili spooned over white rice. What I got was a pile of beans on rice. I sent it back; it was inedibly dry. I mentioned that this was not Red Beans and Rice and the waiter told me it was an old Louisiana recipe. Considering that I've had Red Beans and Rice made by an old Creole grandmother down in the Gulf, that pretty much sealed the deal about being Cajun/Creole inspired, not authentic. From the moment you enter this tiny place and feast your eyes on the charming red leatherette booths and your nose on the delightful smells wafting from the kitchen you'll want to sit down and eat. We didn't wait long for a table on this busy Friday night. Our server was prompt without drinks. He then brought us two yummy biscuits with home made jalapeño jelly. Wow. We both had po boys. I went with the catfish and hubby had philly cheese steak. My catfish was blackened and pan fried. Not breaded. I prefer breaded catfish but this was quite good. The yam fries were to die for. It's hard to believe that I haven't done a post on this before. DaDeO on Whyte Avenue has got to be one of my favorite places to go to and I can vouch that a majority of my friends will agree. Serving up New Orlean's traditional dishes like po'boys, jambalaya, and gumbo, this Cajun-style diner with a retro 50s style decor is where it's at! Vinyl booths, black and white checkered floors, vintage juke boxes and southern style art litter the restaurant, giving it an upbeat yet chilled out vibe. Only serving 18+ (sorry kids!), it's a grown-up only hangout. With every order, comes with free house made biscuits and their infamous jalapeno jelly. Yum! I remember the first time I ever went to Dadeo for lunch, I thought to myself, this has got to be the oddest jelly around. Bright green yet equally explosive in flavor: sweet with a hint of jalapeno. Goes well with their crisp on the outside-soft on the inside biscuits. If you're hitting up Dadeo for the first time (where have you been eating?), you need to order a po'boy. A po'boy is basically a submarine sandwich, Louisiana style. Usually stuffed with meat or a fried seafood item, and usually mixed in with lettuce, a mayo-based sauce of sorts. Dadeo's menu has 13 varieties, almost all for $12. Better yet, go on a Monday or Tuesday, or lunch from Monday to Friday and it's only $9. YUM-MY. To be honest with you, for the last three visits, I've ordered the same thing: a calamari po'boy. Best combination ever! Crisp (and never greasy) squid, heavily seasoned with Cajun seasoning, on top of a baguette with their mayo sauce, tomatoes, red onions, and lettuce. Even Joe orders the same thing every time too. As a side, you get to choose from potato hash, coleslaw, or add sweet potato fries for an extra $1. Do me a favor, get the sweet potato fries. Always. Although I'm a pretty big fan of their coleslaw, not too mayo'd down, crisp texture, their sweet potato fries is right up in their repertoire next to their jalapeno jelly. Thick cut, perfectly cooked, and extremely crispy breading makes this the best sweet potato fries I've ever tried (has been for years now). Until I make a trip to the south, I highly doubt anybody can beat these fries. Seasoned in the same Cajun seasoning as the calamari, the fries are best dipped in the mayo sauce that comes with them. One time, I got adventurous and tried the steamed mussels. I wrapped up my sandwich to go and decided it was time to try something else for a change. Although the bread was the same baguette used to make the sandwiches, having it there to dip the mussel juices and sauce was a bonus. A white wine cream sauce merges the flavors together, creating a nice warm dish for a cold night. Perfect appetizer to share, or could be a meal in itself! Other dishes I've tried that aren't pictured: - Fritters: Four deep-fried dumplings with DaDeO's dippin' sauce. Crab and Parmesan, Jalapeno cheddar, sweet potato or corn. To be honest, by the end of the dish, you couldn't tell which fritter was which if you ordered one of each! The fillings were mild in flavor although you could pinpoint the corn one easily. Good for sharing if you're with a large table because the fritters are huge and very filling for just two! - Blackened shrimp and scallops: delicious! If you're into seafood (versus the blackened chicken option), this is a great dish. Packed with the Cajun flavor. - Cajun calamari: for $11, you can get a dish full of crispy squid rings. Not going to lie, I've considered getting this to go and making my own sandwiches. But I know it won't be the same! - Fried tiger shrimp, crab cakes, blackened chicken po'boys: listed in the order I love, after the calamari po'boy. Still have yet to order the banana foster for dessert, flambeed right at your table! I never have room though after eating my po'boy and fries. I promise next time I go, I'll get it. Even if it means taking a bite out of that night's po'boy and then wrapping it up to go right away. Tip: Reserve or go earlier than the usual lunch or dinner rush. Best place I ate in Edmonton. The Oyster po' boy was delicious and not too heavy at all. The bun was perfect as well and the oysters perfectly breaded, yum! I made sure to make reservations for this restaurant for my birthday dinner because I had heard great things and it was highly recommended to make reservations by my friends who frequented the joint. The restaurant was narrow but I just adored the atmosphere (diner-style). We were greeted immediately to our awesome table, which had a junkbox (LOVE!). Our waitress was super friendly and made some great recommendations on what was most popular (she said EVERYTHING was good, but we got her favourite menu items). I ordered the Blackened Catfish Salad and my Fiance got the Combo Fabio (Fried Chicken/Ribs). My salad was excellent. I loved the buttermilk dressing it came with. It was unreal. I wanted to smother my ENTIRE salad. I tried a bit of my Fiances' dish. I have never had Southern-style chicken before but it was darn good. The ribs were in-your-face messy and tasty. He swapped the regular fries for yam fries and they were WAY different than what I have tried in the past. YUM! Overall, the experience was delightful. I absolutely love this place - my favorite restaurant in Edmonton bar none. The atmosphere, the ambiance, the food, the music, the service it's always perfect as I've been here countless times. First of all if you love the 50's southern diner experience this is where you're going to get it. You always get bread with this pepper jelly jam or whatever it is that's amazing and I wish I could buy that on my own. Dadeo's po boys are worth a visit every Monday or Tuesday. Having such great food in a unique restaurant makes Dadeo one of the best places in Edmonton. The service is always really great and very consistent. They also offer very interesting beverage choices. The buns that are served prior to your meal with the jelly is very good and unique. If you're looking for some advice I'd recommend the egg plant parmigiana with a big glass of cherry mojo. Dadeo's has been a fixture of Whyte Ave for as long as I can remember. And the catfish poboy is Edmonton famous. At $15 it is pricier than I remember it being with the additional $1 for the sweet potato fries. If I were to criticize the bun isn't anything special at all. Could of used a better bun for the sandwich. However the catfish and fries were excellent. All in all it is a great lunch spot with a ton of character doubling as a 50s-diner-New-Orleans theme. I haven't been to Dadeo in awhile and my sweet potato fries and jalapeno jelly levels were at dangerously low levels. I'm happy to report that I've been refueled. The sweet potato fries were awesome - as always. Their herb and mayo dip is such a perfect match for these big and breaded fries. I had the Appocado salad. It had bulky sized apple and avocado chunks that were super satisfying. There were slices of almonds that gave it a nice crunchy texture. I'm not usually a fan of Dijon, but the Dijon vinaigrette used on this dish is used just right for me - not overpowering, but subtly noticeable. I love that they have beer from local brewery Alley Kat. They make a chili beer that's specially brewed for Dadeo. It's a nice lager with a bit of a kick from the chilies. It's really unique, but I can usually only do one pint of it. I love Dadeo not only for their great Cajun food, but also the whole scene: Cool 50s style décor? Check. Rad tunes playing? Yep. Laid back staff? You bet. It's a good place to go with friends, or if you're flying solo. There's a comfy counter to chill out at, or intimate booths (built for 2, but good for one). Dadeos has not changed much since the first time I went years ago. It's a fun quirky restaurant with good vibe. It is tiny! But, they do take reservations if you call ahead. They have a great chilli lager by Alleycat that is only available here. It's got a bit of a kick to it. A unique beer that I always order. I can't drink a lot of it, but a glass is a nice compliment to a meal. And a good reason to visit! Try the sweet potato fries! They're very different than other places! Nothing beats a good Cajun eatery. Dadeo's is an old school style diner (I think the name gives it a way) that has great food. It usually has a little bit of a wait but it's no big deal because it is quite worth it. I would recommend going on either a Monday or Tuesday for half priced Po'boys and upgrade to the sweet potato fries, if you're a fan, because they have great ones here (I'm not much of a fan but the people I have gone with claim they are). The dip is a chipotle mayo and the jalapeno jelly for the biscuits is so good! Like I said before, you may have to wait for a table because it is a small restaurant, with tons of booths, so you may want to call ahead to make reservations. We hopped in here for a bite after wandering the strip and were welcomed by friendly staff and quick service. Whyte is such a hassle to go down sometimes with the traffic and the crowds but it always seems to be worth the trouble if this is the destination. An Edmonton diner classic with what I would describe as hearty Louisianian comfort food. Make sure you are hungry when you go as portions are big (I'm not complaining). The biscuits with mint & chili jelly you are served when you first sit down are a great apertif. You can't go wrong with ordering a Po'Boy sandwich (especially during the weekday when they are on lunch special for $10) and the yam fries with herb mayo (a $1 extra). Yum. Is there anything better than this place? Seriously? I know this place has probably been reviewed like 8 million times but I thought I might as well review it as well. I come here a couple times a year since moving to Edmonton 5 years ago. And this place is still awesome every time. Yesterday we had an awesome server! I didn't catch his name but his shirt said something about hugs on it. He was so nice! He checked on us when we needed more coffee and didn't rush us out the door. I always love getting service from awesome people like that. I'm sorry I didn't remember his name but I did appreciate the service! I always get the Bayou Jambalaya and cornbread. My sister and I walked in with her infant son and we were told we can't dine in because they're a licensed bar. It was our first time and didn't know so we ordered take out. The decor and vibes were that of a vintage diner with fun memorabilia. The music was not too loud and would be perfect for conversations. I was disappointed we couldn't stay! They weren't busy so our order came out within 10 min or so. (We showed up at an odd time between lunch and dinner.) We got home and enjoyed the following: -Fried oysters: They were unreal!! The tomatoe sauce that came with this dish had the a nice kick. The heat worked well with the battered oysters. The batter itself had a nice garlicy touch. Every bite was mmmmm good. - Calamari Po'boy and fries: The calamari was battered with a slight chewiness that left me struggling with each bite. The bun was nothing special but I loved the simplicity of the fixings which was fresh tomato and lettuce. The sweet potato fries were heavenly! They were battered so had a nice crunch on the outside and were soft and sweet on the inside. - Bayou Jambalaya: I'm not so sure about this dish. The blackened fish was delicious. The vegetables and rice were good. The sausage had ZERO flavour. I fwlt like I was chewing air. I was disappointed because I was at least expecting some heat. The creamy sauce was heavy and I wasn't sure it went well with the rice. I wasn't a fan. Overall, I would definitely go back for a dine in experience (sans baby) the next time I'm visiting Edmonton. read more

The decor and ambiance is great, and so is the rockabilly service. It's a FUN place to eat and often busy. It's usually best for small groups or couples; there's really only ONE table that would accommodate a larger group in the entire restaurant. My recommendations: their southern fried chicken, deep fried oysters, and blackened catfish (The latter two can both be fillings in a po boy). A place like this is not for those who prefer mild tasting food: expect salt and spice, and plenty of it. I'd also order their sweet potato fries with mayo. I wish I can give this a higher review, but the hot dog bun they place their lovely Po Boy filling is just a disaster. I understand that it's a "po boy" hence a cheap sandwich, and usually on special, but will it kill them to use a higher quality bun? Bake their own or buy from a local bakery? Please and thanks? FAVOURITE RESTAURANT IN THE CITY. I've been here multiple times, and love everything about it. The space is small and cosy, set up like a 1950's diner with snug booths along the wall and a mini-bar decorated with jazz singer figurines. The servers are always down-to-Earth and friendly. Before your meal, they bring you a complimentary biscuit with sweet and spicy jalapeno jelly ( a nice alternative to the bread basket found in most Italian restaurants). They have a few tasty signature drinks- while I have yet to try the beer, I found the cherry coke with Southern Comfort absolutely divine. Vanilla coke is also available. Last time I went, my friend (who is an equally big fan of Dadeo) insisted on ordering the sweet potato fries to start. They were beautifully seasoned, though I think they could have done without the batter coating. For entree's, she had the rib jambalaya, while I had the half blackened catfish po'boy with gumbo. The blackened fish itself was pure heaven! The gumbo was also delicious. I have a habit of dousing everything in Tiger Sauce while I'm there, and the gumbo was no exception- but don't get me wrong, it's equally delicious with no condiments at all. The po'boys tend to be a little heavy on the herb mayo. We finished with some scrumptious bread pudding. The Banana's Foster has become something of a legend- it's not just a dessert, it's a whole experience. the ingredients (chopped banana, a multitude of cubed butter, and brown sugar) are wheeled over to your table on a cart. The server then proceeds to melt the butter and sugar in a pan with rum, set it on FIRE, then serve it in a bowl over vanilla ice cream. I'd reccomend saving this one for group outings of 3 or 4- for someone who's never been before, it would make a delightful birthday surprise. :) read more

My experience at DaDeo was great! I ordered their fried chicken and substituted in their famous sweet potato fries-the meal was good, but the chicken it was a tad dry and the coleslaw on the side was soggy. The servers were friendly, the decor looked like it was taken right from a movie in the 60's, and the ambiance of the restaurant was definitely casual. Hands down our favorite restaurant in town! This place is seriously a gem. One-of-a-kind. Delightful. The staff here are all familiar faces- a clear indication of the pleasant atmosphere and love for their jobs. The atmosphere is very laid back and fun, with old school rock and blues music playing. The decor is fascinating- it screams Louisiana from every corner. The food is always fantastic. We go almost weekly for a po-boy and have tried nearly every one without ever being disappointed. Their specialty is sweet potato fries, but the other side dishes are great as well. What keeps bringing me back is actually the gumbo, which I have tried to make at home but never succeeded in making it so creamy! Since I work in the area I come here on occasion on my lunch breaks. I love how the place is licenced so you never have to worry about misbehaved kids, etc. After you sit down you are served with a complimentary biscuit and jalapeno jam (which I find tasty). I always get the sweet potato fries. Either plain with a dipping sauce (the sauce is awesome) or as a poutine. I love these fries. If you can't handle spicy then these are probably not a good choice (I'm sure they could go light on the seasoning if you asked). I always go around lunch time. Dadeo's has long beem a favourite restaurant of mine. This city seems to have few independent restaurants that offer a compelling product, have any character at all, and are priced very competitively. I believe that Dadeo's meets these criteria. There are plenty of neat, smaller, snazzy restaurants, but not too many that are priced well enough that they can be enjoyed frequently. I have never been to the American South, so I have no idea whether or not their representation of it is "authentic" or not, but regardless, they offer a varied and interesting menu. I normally get the combination plate for a little variety or opt for a Po Boy sandwich with sweet potato fries. I can't comment on much else, but those options are pretty great. And if you come on a Monday or Tuesday, their Po Boys are discounted. The restaurant itself is American South retro themed, but not in a cheesy way that you could imagine a chain doing. It's very narrow, with bench seats either accommodating groups of 2 or 4. They can also bring a chair for a 5th. Not sure if they have larger tables than that or not, but I don't think so. It's also very busy so try to make a reservation. But any fault with the restaurant would be minor; especially considering that there are few, if any restaurants of its kind in Edmonton. I went here last night and boy did I have a great time! First of all our server, Laura, was awesome!! The place was all decked out for pride and the food was awesome! We started off having southern fried chicken wings, which had terrific spice and crispness. Then I proceeded to order my classic blackened catfish poboy with sweet potato fries! Soo guuuuuhhhhhhhhd! I mean serious Dadeo has had that same sweet potato recipe for years and no place compares. The green onion lil bits are a great addition! 5 Like I said our server was funny, responsive and a real hoot! Fried Oyster Po'Boy, Cajun Calamari, and Steamed Mussels So everything in this picture looks delicious, because it is delicious. Haven't been here in a while but it's actually still one of the best places for southern style cooking. This place has the one of the best calamari you can get in Edmotnon because of the buttermilk batter. It's light and fluffy and not overly fried like most places. Steamed mussels is a must because it comes with a French loaf that is bomb AF when you dip it into the tequila salsa white wine cream that the mussels are drenched in. There's so much mussels that it could be your main course. I usually get the fried oyster po'boy because it's the best IMO on the menus next to the blackened chicken. Always get sweet potato fries as a side because it's the best side to get and best sweet potato fries you will ever experience in your life. Believe me. This restaurant is probably one of the coolest places to be if you're a detective of private investigator that's questioning some sexy suspect. It's small and dingy, and plays some of the best music. Honestly, I havent eaten here in years, but I still crave the simple (and perfect) biscuits and jalapeno jelly you get while waiting for your food to arrive. I would come here for the catfish fingers, the po-boys and the atmosphere. Very similar to the Templeton in Vancouver, but cajun and always spotted with rockabilly babes. So I can dig on all of those things. The food was never a let down and the service always keen. Consistency rules, doesnt it? I have absolutely zero reason to return to Edmonton any time soon, but I know I will be visiting this spot (along side a few other old haunts in the neighbourhood). Hope all is well, Dadeo! read more
