Mar 31/26 I met a friend at Winston's this evening for fish & chips. I have eaten here for a few years and had been recommending this eatery for their service and their food to my friend for some time so this evening we met there. As usual the food was good but the service was awful. There was only 3 other people besides the two of us in there, so she wasn't run off of her feet - when we wanted water we had to do the loud "excuse me" as she wasn't anywhere to be found in the eating area, we had to shout her down 3 different times. Needless to say it was a disappointment for my friend and surely one for me - will not recommend it again. I may go back sometime in the far future but never in the evening as the earlier successes have been fora later lunch. read more

I can't believe I haven't been there all of these years!!! We were shopping close to this restaurant and we decided that we would like to have fish and chips! The atmosphere and interior design was perfect and cozy! The customer service was awesome and the waitress was very kind, friendly and helpful! I got delivery from Sir Winston's Fish & Chips a while back. In terms of food, I tried their 2 piece haddock meal, 2 piece cod meal, and onion rings. The haddock definitely stood out - large pieces, well flavoured, and the batter was good even though it was delivery. The chips were also good. Yah, These guys have great Fish n Chips and meat pies. We stopped here on our recent summer trip for some Sir WInstons Fish n Chips. Fish was really light and crunchy. I tried Sir Winston's Fish & Chips from their food truck at an event, and was impressed by the portion size and quality. The piece of haddock was huge, lightly battered to perfection, accompanied by a mountain of fries. I wish they had some fresh tartar sauce on the side, rather than those packets that taste mostly of vinegar, and it is a bit pricey - but you get what you pay for. read more

Easy to find via Google Maps. Lots of parking in the parking lot but this place is Busy! 90% full when we got here at 5:30PM and stayed that way until we left at 6:30PM. Staff were friendly but never came back to refill my water. I tried the 1 piece Halibut with chips. My friend tried the 2 piece cod full meal deal (full meal deal = non-stop pop and a side of coleslaw for an additional $3). I was worried 1 piece wouldn't be enough but the Halibut was quite large and definitely enough. The cod is a Lot smaller and 2 pieces was appropriate for 1 person in that case. Halibut was a lot thicker and more fish to batter ratio. Very moist and great batter. Quite pricey. Cod was thinner and longer and more batter per bite. Coleslaw was worth the additional price. Not too rich, crisp cabbage, I really liked it. To me honestly the cod and halibut tasted the same but I liked the fish to batter ratio of the cod better and that you get 2 really big looking pieces. Fries were fresh and well cooked. Could have used more salt in my opinion but there was salt on the table to add. Overall great fish and chips place I would highly recommend. Winston's is still one of my favorite places for fish and chips. We haven't gone in a while, at least since the pandemic hit Alberta. We drove by and decided to pick some up to take home as our baby was getting sleepy and close to her bed time. Everything was on the up and up, the food came quick, it was hot even after driving 15 mins home. I feel like they changed their fries from fresh made ones before to premade frozen potato fries or chips as they're called. The fish was a bit more oily than I remember it to be as well. All things considered still a pretty decent fish and chips shop if you're in the market for it. read more

Okay so I came across this place through TripAdvisor. The photos we had seen of the sizes of a piece of fish looked like a joke. A piece prettt much as big as the plate just didn't seem real. In walking into this place I have never actually been to a fish and chips place in Europe. I imagine it may look something like this or be as homey as this one is. Wonderful colors on the wall and art all around. Loved to look around and see all the random things around. We stopped in tonight to check it out and try this big fish and chips. We started with some calamari and mozzarella sticks. Now mozzarella sticks are pretty safe bet, these ones had a really crisp putter that was nice. On the calamari it was so damn tasty that we did not even need to really use the sauce, yes the sauce is good but stand alone it's delicious! Not over cooked and easy to chew and they actually give a lemon slice! A big slice of one as well ensuring you can cover your calamari, very nice! Our fish and chips came out and no joke, it's damn near as big as the plate. We got one piece and chips each and got damn! That was overly filling but filling as in able to eat it all! The batter wa snot stupidly filling right off the bat nor was there an air pocket or over coating of batter. Again they give a massive slice of lemon to coat your fish in and changes the color of the batter as it soaked up that juice Making a crisp bottommbatter and a soft top batter that just need a little tartar sauce (again, do not need the tar tar sauce but it's a good addition). So eating and enjoying it all was delightful! The coleslaw had the addition of dill to it, totally make it a better taste then the usual that is all around. All done by a server working the floor herself and absolutely nailing it! Didn't slip up our order and we did not have to wait to get our food or a revisit. We will be stopping in and I recommend stopping in to anyone who likes true fish and chips To sum it up, I will say this is maybe the best relish and chips in Edmonton. We decided to do a taste test here. We ordered one piece of halibut and one piece of cod to see if we could tell the difference because in the past deep fried fish has always been a batter delivery service to me and I never cared what kind of fish was in the batter. In the end I preferred the cod although I thought the halibut tasted really nice and when you try then both at once you really notice the difference. To me the battered code is a comfort food and so it turned out to be my favourite. The batter on the fish was good and there was more fish than batter. The coleslaw was flavoured nicely and was light on the mayo which was good. The service was great and there were lots of different thing on the menu that I want to try. We will be back. read more

Yesterday we ordered take-out from Sir Winston's. While this wasn't my first time trying out their food, I admit it had been a while. Unsure of the portion sizes, we each ordered the 2 pieces of Atlantic Cod with Chips.... this was SO much food. Such a great value for only about $20 per meal. This a strong statement, but this is definitely the BEST fish and chips in the city. So good that I even forgot to take a picture (very unlike me). I've tried many restaurants for fish & chips, included popular ones downtown... this one outshines them in all aspects. Great taste, great value, and large portion sizes! I love everything about this restaurant...friendly atmosphere, family friendly, reminds me of a British Pub, great beer selection, live music, and amazing food with friendly owners. We started with deep fried scallops and veggie spring rolls. Both came out hot and tasty and paired well with our beers. The batter on the scallops was particularly good. We also each chose the one piece haddock with fries. Again, great batter, generous piece of fish that was tender and hot. I also was suggested by the owner to try the curry sauce which I will totally now order every time we go there. The owner gave us a tour and was very hospitable and treated our children like actual customers and not a nuisance. This was very appreciated by our family. This is our favourite Fish and Chip place. Money well spent, the best fish we ever had. Hubby gets the halibut and I get the cod, and the cod is gluten free..oh and the onion rings they make gluten free too and they are sooo delish. This was our 2nd time taking it home to eat. They segregated the gluten free dinner from the rest, they really take the time. Told me when I got home, to crisp it up in the oven for 10 min or so on 350° -and it came out PERFECT! Such a treat that I don't care what it costs. This place is near my work and sometimes we go here when we are craving fish and chips. The fish is always crispy on the outside and moist and flaky inside. The fries are also well done. On this occasion I had the fried oysters, they were plump and juicy. These are the best fried oysters I've had in Edmonton so far. The only downside is the price and sometimes the service. The price prevents more frequent visits and last time I was there I saw and heard the owner scolding the waitress for something that was not her fault. read more

Probably the best fish & chips I've ever had, especially as take-out. The fish was battered perfectly and cooked to perfection. The two pieces of fish barely fit inside the 8" square clamshell. My only complaint: the 1 oz of tartar sauce included by default wasn't enough... but that would have been easily solved if I had known and had asked for more. Service: exceptional. I cannot understand how this place has such rave reviews. I went yesterday for lunch the service was slow and the tables squashed into every corner of the restaurant. I called earlier to see if they had gf options which they did. Gf options are limited only 2 fish options and super expensive. They were obviously prepackaged frozen items. $20 for halibut bites and $5 frozen French fries. And to boot the tarter sauce had flour in it so it was not gluten free. I have never heard of a tarter sauce with flour. So I ate bland rubbery frozen fish blobs and a plate of McCain fries for $25. If a restaurant cannot provide flavorful gf options they should not offer gf options. read more

Nice place for fish and chips. My cod was hot and crispy. The fries were run of the mill. If you want colsaw you have to pay extra, but who really wants coleslaw. I visited here tonight with my husband and 2 good friends, we just got back from England last month and were all craving some good authentic fish and chips. We tried Brits last week but weren't overly impressed. This place is much better, the batter is perfectly light and crispy, there is a larger variety of beverages and dishes plus the service is MUCH more friendly and personable. The charming owner collects UK tea towels, and we mentioned that my family is from jersey and that my families home is featured on a teatowel that we purchased, he brought us his entire collection to try and find it he also had it, it was great fun to see someone so enthusiastic about his business and passionate about what he did. We will certainly be back in the future, it's the best fish in Edmonton, and the closest I have had to British fish in North America. read more

I came here for the fish and stayed for the fish! Tasty, nicely battered and enjoyable. I got both the halibut and the haddock . The halibut was $24 for two pieces while the haddock was $16. I can tell you if you want an amazing fish and chips go the more expensive way with the halibut. Large pieces and filling, I might recommend getting 1 piece with the chips and a side. The chips themselves were very uninspiring. Seems like they were straight out of the frozen food aisle. Maybe that's how British people eat them? My friend and I were at Southgate Mall and wanted to grab a quick bite to eat. I found out that Sir Winston's was about 3 minutes away from the mall so we headed there. Fish and chips had been on my list of cravings for awhile, too! It's located in a strip mall shopping area and was fairly easy to find. The restaurant itself is very casual with a bit of a homey atmosphere. Their menu features a lot of deep fried goodness, from appetizers, to fish and chips, and even dessert (deep fried Mars bar). There are 4 types of fish to choose from: atlantic cod, atlantic haddock, pacific salmon, and pacific halibut, all 4 oz each. During my trip, I found the service to be lacking. Both our water and food took awhile to come out. The table beside us received their fish & chips first when we had ordered before them. Of course I didn't let this affect my taste of the food though! I ordered 1 piece of the atlantic cod, which is one of the more common types of fish used. The piece was huge and delicious. The batter was light and crispy while the fish tasted fresh. But the fries? I was surprised at the small portion of it when my plate arrived. It appeared equivalent to a kids meal. They were just average fries too, nothing worth noting. My friend had a piece of the pacific salmon with a baked potato. He was surprised at the small portion of his meal. His fish was decently big though. The baked potato only came with sour cream and butter. For now, I'll be going to other fish and chips eateries in the city to see how they compare. The prices were reasonable and the fish was delicious but I was quite disappointed by their sides. "Chips" do make up half of the meal! read more

BUT!! please lets have the fresh chips that you used to have, which were second to none. Although the chips are freshly cooked they definelty are not fresh fries. I used to love this place for it's reasonable prices and large portions, but they have raised their prices on every single menu item ($2 for a can of pop that does not even come with a glass of ice) and cut down the portion sizes tremendously. After seeing the new menu prices we debated leaving without ordering, but thought we would try. I absolutely wish we had gone somewhere else. The fish portion was large, but very bland. The very small handful of fries were very overcooked and dry. I know our society as a rule are overeaters, but the portion size was not worth the price at all. Lots of decorating, but no ambiance whatsoever. The bathroom is falling apart. The staff is very mediocre, nothing warm and friendly whatsoever about the experience. This was our last visit to this particular place. Protip: If you're experiencing financial difficulty in your restaurant, you should probably try to keep what customers you have instead of expecting them to carry the weight of all of the people NOT eating there. read more

I really like fish and chips and although this place had all the credentials it just didn't make it. It is located in a strip mall and is a bit of a dive. For me this is actually encouraging as I have found that if a place can last with no ambiance it is either dirt cheap or has good food. When entering you are surrounded by British posters in a large open space, but the furniture and flooring has seen much better times. This is obviously a family run business and you get to meet most of them during your visit. Service was good and the food was ready in a very short time. First thing you notice is the HUGE portions of fish, so crispy you can't wait to dig in. The second is the chips.... they served frozen fries which brings pain to my heart. The manager was very friendly and greeted us nicely as we sat down for a nice meal. The food came out pretty quick. The coleslaw was small in size but it was nice. As for the chips they were also nice and big and tasted better then the fish. The fish was a disappointment. filled with oil I decided to use my tissue to absorb all the oil out of the fish.. My Tissue was soaked in oil by the end of it and the batter was over cooked. As for the fish well there was no taste left of it due to the oil and batter being so bad.
