Daido was a great find while I was driving through Westchester. Smaller than Mitsuwa, but bigger than Tominaga Shouten, this supermarket. It has everything you'll want from a Japanese supermarket plus extras: ready-made bento and onigiri, a small bakery, a cream puff station, and a restroom. Parking is a bit crowded during the weekends, so come early if you can. Otherwise, there's paid parking at the town's parking area. read more

We came looking for prepared foods. It was 2 or 3pm so not much left - kelp or bonito flake rice ball and shrimp fried noodles. I grabbed a kelp onigiri to hold me over. When I first walked in, I was chatting with the woman at the bakery who was very friendly. I ended up buying a mixed fruit cream sandwich. My friend was skeptical but ended up liking it. Canned peach, grape, strawberry, kiwi with whipped cream sandwiched between fluffy milk bread was sweet, creamy and fluffy like a piece of cake. On Saturdays (and maybe Sundays) they have $2 cream puffs. We had to wait a little bit but it was worth it. The cream puffs had a nice crispy outer with buttery creamy custard inside. They weren't as crispy the next day, but still good. Other than that, the grocery has a good variety of frozen foods, vegetables, and meats. read more

Go on Saturday and Sunday for the CREME PUFFS! The sweet older woman there magically whirls out what are arguably the best pastries available in White Plains. Follow the intoxicating aroma of fresh baked puff pastry to the tiny corner behind the last register. In a space of about 6X4 feet, with an EZ Bake (sorta) oven and custard machine she is hand assembling and weighing each delicate, sandwich sized confection. What a nice surprise to find this amazing Japanese grocery! It's about 20 minutes away from me by vehicle, but Daido will certainly become my go to place when I'm looking for some Japanese grocery staples! In fact, if you live in the area and have always picked up your sushi making ingredients from H Mart, I challenge you to take the drive over to Daido and check out their fresh selections. Oh, and the prices are definitely a bit cheaper than H Mart. Don't get me wrong: I love me some H Mart... but, Daido is exclusively Japanese and not really pan-Asian as H Mart has become. And you'll find when you visit, that it makes a bit difference--i.e., they carry a larger selection of Japanese goods, it's easier to find what you are looking for, etc. etc. Just take the trip over to Daido, and you'll see what I mean! Note that Daido also features a couple of take out food kiosks inside the store. On our last visit, Tony tried a cream puff from their bakery, and we also picked up some freshly made sushi. I didn't try the cream puff, but Tony said it was quite tasty. I did, however, try the sushi, and it was some of the freshest and tastiest I've had in a year. When I'm getting antsy and want to feel like I'm outside the country or away somewhere, Daido is one of the first places that come to mind. This place has been around for a long time, from when I was young growing up in White Plains. They have pretty much any Japanese item you can think of, and imported items galore like real wasabi root and numerous other specialty items imported from Japan. I usually come for their (green) tea and/or Japanese snacks like rice crackers and gummies, and oftentimes end up getting salmon or eel onigiri, or sushi that they put out. Sometimes they'll have sales on some rice cracker items. They also carry Japanese beer on the far end of the store, but I find their prices for the beer tend to be a bit high and some of the more well-known brands like Sapporo you can get at the regular super market for cheaper. But they do have some brands that a regular supermarket wouldn't have, either. They have cream puffs that they churn out hot and fresh on the weekends (don't remember if only Saturday or Sunday). I don't usually interact with the staff there, so can't comment on their helpfulness or amicability. I find this store to be, in my experience, probably the most authentic Japanese market in the NY area, including Manhattan. To me what makes it so authentic is the intimacy of it. The reason for not the full five stars is the parking lot is very small and only has a few spots that are free. The other parking spots towards the far end of the lot overlap with the municipal parking and are metered. So if you're coming during a busy time, you'll either have to wait for a spot or just park in a metered spot, which is kind of annoying. Daido is a grocery store and an experience, that gives you that not-in-NY feel. read more

Rude, petty staff. I accidentally made the mistake of parking in a spot that apparently isn't a spot, and an employee came out and roughly told me I needed to move. I acknowledged and said ok, no problem, and I went to the backseat to get my young passengers buckled in again, which, of course took a few moments. The gentleman stood there and stared at me like I was a criminal. As I was nearly done with getting my toddler back into the carseat, this gentleman repeated aggressively that I had to move and went on a public rant that I was disrupting the flow of traffic and blocking people. I looked around -- no cars waiting near me. That seemed unnecessary; I heard the correction, had politely said ok and was clearly trying to leave. I decided to just go home at that point. I've shopped there before but this was surprisingly rude customer treatment for an unintentional error. read more

I have been coming here during the Covid-19 lockdown and they still manage to fully stock their shelves with freshest sushi fish and other yummy Japanese goods. Bento boxes go on shelves at 10AM the latest. All bentos are available unchanged from pre-Covid era. Pick your favorite from spicy tuna rolls, chirashi bowl and curry bowl. Clear vinyl curtain now surrounds each cash register, making it impossible to catch any airborne disease from cashiers. Unfortunately (I say this selfishly), non-Japanese people are starting to discover this hidden gem. Every time the line forming outside the store is longer than before, but only about 5 to 15 people. Much better than the line at Trader Joes, right? Their hours are now from 9:30 to 5pm every day. Last entry is at 4:30. Sadly I don't see Sun Merry bread anymore... hope they come back soon. Daido might have paused on weekend cream puffs as well. Call ahead. :-) If you want something American, pick up pizza at Utica Pie Co. just a few blocks away. Even though the selection of fresh cut fish for sushi and sashimi is not restaurant premium sections, it suffices for the inner at home sushi chef. The variety of fish is generally more than a typical suburban sushi restaurant. Great prices for Japanese products. The employees are courteous and friendly. 4.5 stars solely for the prepared foods and cream puffs! I'm not sure that this would be my market of choice for sashimi grade fish though. Hmart has plenty of options for a more reasonable price, imo. However, their prepared bentos and rice bowls here are fantastic! As are their onigiris and the other prepared options. I've tried their bara chirashi bowl and their beef sukiyaki bowl, both of which are excellent. Very filling for $8 and $6, respectively. They are really generous with the toppings and the sauce, which makes both bowls super tasty! My favorite part about the onigiris is that they use seasoned nori, while most other places use regular sushi nori. This makes a huge difference! They also do a good job of keeping the nori crunchy, which is rare. Finally, the cream puffs are made fresh and filled to order, which is way more than Beard Papa's can say about their cream puffs. They are huge, fluffy, and only cost $1.50 each! The cream filling is not too sweet either, which I appreciate. Eat them fresh because the cream will lose their shape the longer you wait! Cash only at the cream puff stand, and only on weekends. Definitely worth it though, I will be back soon. :) Parking is kind of a mess. There are a few unmetered spots (5-6) reserved for Daido, but you'll be hard pressed to find one empty on the weekends or even on the weekdays. There are metered spots next to them or the municipal lot a little further over, but either way, I would recommend coming with a friend or family member who doesn't mind waiting in the car along the road if you are just running in and out to grab something quick! read more

A great local Asian market just a stones throw from downtown White Plains. You can get all the ingredients you need to make anything you like and the have reasonable prices on produce and proteins. The sushi stand in the front of the shop is always fresh and delicious. On the weekend the cream puff counter makes the best version of a cream puff you will ever eat. I love this place. We love this place. I think they start to discount items at either 5 or 5:30 that are expiring that day, so go in the evenings! I think the sashimi is pretty good and their fish selection also good. I like eating the grilled mackerel because then I don't have to stink up my house cooking it. Their shabu shabu cuts off meat are great and I generally only buy hotpot/shabu shabu beef and pork here if I can. Their produce is on the pricey side for some items so we don't buy a lot of produce here. I do like their kabocha squash here and bean sprouts, as it seems freshest out of all the Asian markets. Their burdock root is also sold individually rather than in bundles of three as some other places do. Lastly, the cream puff hype is real. I don't even like cream puffs and thought the ones here were amazing. Weekends only and cash only. Seriously SO GOOD. I haven't had the bakery goods or the separate sushi place a try so can't comment on that. read more

The mixed review is due to a major mistake at check-out. They added a $35 item (cookware?) that inflated my bill by 50%. I only noticed it after I got home, not sure if they'll honor the refund since it's hard to prove I didn't buy that mystery item. Everything else was excellent as expected. I don't know why it took me so long to finally write a review about Daido market. We discovered this Japanese grocery store back in 2015 and have been a frequent customer since then. If you've been to Sunrise Market in NYC, this grocery store has the similar feel. Small but very tidy. It offers fresh grocery, snacks and frozen foods from Japan and features a take out sushi bar and a bakery. They also sell very delicious cream puffs during weekends so be sure to grab a couple when you come (well, probably more than a couple, they are so good!). Every item here is really good quality from Japanese rice to household items. Once I got the rice from here, I could never go back to regular supermarket brand. Nothing came close to these fluffy and sweet rice. Be sure to ask the friendly cashier about the kind they use in their sushi or bento and you won't be disappointed. There are also tons of seasonal groceries too. Don't miss chocolate covered strawberries in the spring and matcha sweets during the fall, grab some hotpot soup base to make yourself a hearty and soul warming hotpot with your family in the winter and stock up black sesame ice creams for the summer. Also, check out their household items aisle, there are tons of little crafts and tools that can be helpful. I like their rubber gloves which are really high quality and one pair could last you for months. The market tends to get busy and things get sold out so be sure to go early if you want to get popular items like sea urchins and toro. I am 3 rd generation Japanese American now 64. My folks moved us to westchester in 1958. The only Japanese grocer was on west 105 th street in NYC. My folks loved shopping at Daido the best. And now My daughter and I follow in their footsteps. The staff are ALL happy outgoing eager to help in seconds-- a very rare sincere welcoming environment. There is a new gentleman in his small restaurant/ cooking "booth" in the front of this lovely small shop who creates OUTSTANDING fresh sushi. A former top French pastry chef, he confessed modestly when asked, he works feverishly fast to prepare some of the best seasoned, perfectly cooked rice, generously cut ingredients I have eaten in any formal Japanese restaurant in suburban Westchester Co. His prices are very reasonable ESP considering the excellent quality freshness and authenticity of his ingredients. I have loved Nobu in Miami , Shinbashi Nippon Club and Nakagawa in NYC long ago. He is VERY good. His hours of operation should be checked first . Daido also offers excellent small to go pkgs of fresh delicious Japanese meals to take home. Their fresh fish meats and vegetables are always beautiful CLEAN odorless and do not immediately spoil like the new H market on central avenue. They have an outstanding selection of sauces spices dried fish nori ( special seaweed), wonderful useful Japanese housewares rice makers, select beauty health products great candy and extra delicious super selection of rice crackers snacks and a full wall of Japanese movies videos. A painstakingly planned selection of products in a nice medium-small sized shop. Their selection of rice is quite huge for such a small shop-- organic 7 grain brown sweet white black domestic California choice or imported. I love fine rice. Quick, cheap, tasty no-frills supermarket cafeteria- it's always crowded and you have to figure out what the locals do... I managed to stash my full shopping cart by a freezer while I ordered.....as there is no explanation anywhere. So......you stand in a line at the cash till and select from the overhead menu (funny how the names in any language are merely translated into English but with absolutely no explanation as to what each dish is. (I am fortunate that I knew what I wanted beforehand and speak a little Korean. You order and pay for your dish of choice from Japanese / Chinese / Korean counter. Then you take your little toll receipt number and wait patiently (just as though you are in DMV - it's pretty good and you take the tray to any spare table you can find. Hot tasty convenience I'll definitely eat here again and try a different dish. I had the Korean Haemul Pajeun- not half bad really.... But the atmosphere and the fact that the little old Grandma who cut up my omelette used her bare hands happily in front of me was a little off-putting to say the least. Forget COVID! She should touch my food with her bare hands NEVER, but seemed quite content and oblivious. read more

Love this place dearly. This japanese market is truly for those who want to be transported to a grocery store in Japan. Japanese groceries, produce, household products, ready made food, bakery, and sushi corner. I've had the karaage (fried chicken) and it's very good. Not too salty like it usually is when you eat out. The bakery is solid--I got the red bean donut and it was delicious. They even have fresh hot yaki-imo (roasted Japanese sweet potato)! Truly a place that sticks to its roots and tries to be nothing more. The service is superb, as it is in Japan as well. The store owner and employees seem to all be Japanese so that's no surprise. Daido is still well stocked during Covid and my favorite go to for the freshest sushi, bento boxes, ramen, Japanese snacks and baked goods. I tend to go during weekdays when it's least busy, avoiding lunchtime. They do a great job with distancing and cleanliness. Good ventilation and they keep the front door open. I've been exploring new Japanese recipes during Covid watching YouTube and so far I've been able to find everything at daido. Wonderful Asian (I think Japanese) supermarket in White Plains, NY. They have three different sections in the supermarket, all of them are great: 1) The Sushi compartment: They make the sushi right in front of you when you go there and order it and it tastes absolutely amazing. There was an elderly Asian man, who used to do the sushi and it was perfect. Now there are 2 new guys and it's still good, but the Spicy Tuna Sushi is so spicy, you can't even enjoy the fish anymore, maybe work on that! 2) The supermarket itself: I don't shop there a lot, but they have a great Sortiment of Japanese beer, candy, dried fish and stuff and just in general Asian treats. 3) The bakery: a beautiful little bakery is just on the side of the store, they have yummy bread and on the weekend they sell fresh made Créme puffs in there, they're so delicious, I always buy multiple! The price is very fair, for 18 sushi rolls I payed about 15$, ginger and soya sauce are included, also chopsticks. 100% recommendable to anyone who's in the area! read more

Very disappointed. As a long time customer, this is the first time I had experienced such poor service at checkout. The market is consistently good, with a good variety of produce and specialty foods that can be challenging to procure. However, part of the draw has been the care the checkout attendants take in checking your groceries out and bagging them. I had asked for a paper bag and was paying while my items were being bagged. Half way through, the cashier literally started throwing the remaining items into the bag. Typically frozen food and sashimi fish are bagged separately and then placed in the bag. I was really shocked and taken aback. If you go to any of the local asian super markets: H-mart, Frontier, Fuji-mart, Golden Village, you will notice the care in bagging the attendants or cashiers provide. There are too many places available to shop at, thus the differences ultimately comes down to the service and customer care. This experience was unfortunate and hopefully a rare occurrence. read more
