Food 4/5 - Ordered chicken katsu plate and a side of pork fried rice. Chicken katsu was fried nicely and the breading was fine. It was definitely a bigger portion than I expected. The pork fried rice had very good "wok-hei" great flavor. Miso soup was watery and was lacking flavor, although it was served nice and hot. Price $$ - Price is good with the portions that were served. Service 3/5 - Service is average, we needed to flag down a server to refill our drinks. Ambiance 3/5 - Interior is fine but not much of a Japanese theme, the lanterns remind me of a Chinese restaurant. Overall - Had a pleasant experience and would visit again.

Great food at a great price with great service. Quick service. Your food comes out quick. Black garlic ramen is so savory and full of flavor. The chicken katsu is done perfectly.

The service was Quick and friendly. The food got to us quick, flavors were good, chicken katsu not over fried like some places.

This ramen place is soo delicious!! It is the best food I've had yet! The restaurant is clean and cozy and has a nice ambiance. It's a busy local spot. My first time here and I'll be back for sure very soon! The selection they have is a lot of good choices! I had the ramen with curry and katsu chicken! Soo tasty and I had leftovers. The shrimp is delicious too! The service is superb and nice! You need to try this restaurant

The place to go to for a quick comforting and savory bite. Service is quick, sometimes making you question if the servers are being short with you. If you want top notch service, don't expect it here. I think they just want to turn their tables as quickly as possible. No frills. Food is consistent every time we go. Our go to favorites: The noodle special (Ramen or Udon) with two side choices (Gyzoa, Fried Rice, etc) or Chicken Katsu Curry. So good!

Booth seating was perfect for us. The wait staff were super nice and patient with us. Their menu is huge and has a lot of options for customizing. Fortunately, there are diagrams on the wall to help you decide. I got a Miso Standard ramen ($20 with an Ajitama (seasoned soft boiled egg), hard texture, fried garlic, extra noodles. It was fabulous! Really hit the spot. Loved the chewier noodles and the rich, flavorful broth. DH got THE Garlic ramen ($26.50) also with an Ajitama, pork belly, and extra noodles, regular firmness. The kids wanted extra Naruto (fish cakes), 75 cents for 2 small pieces. One of our kids is under age 5, so we got a Miso mini ramen ($9.50 value) for free! Wow! Little one said he did not like the flavor of the seasoned egg. Noodles were very soft, but stayed together, and soaked up a ton of broth so they were flavorful. He said the Miso Mini comes with corn instead of fish cake. We loved all of the toppings. The pork belly was excellent! Portion sizes are great. We had some leftovers to take back. Overall, a fantastic place to satisfy those ramen cravings!

I cannot recommend this place enough. The ambiance and experience are something to feel in person and watching the dishes being prepared with such precision was fascinating. The worker was nice about it, but because they don't have a website, how were we supposed to know? We also usually try to make reservations ahead of time, but because there was no website, we figure it's a first come, first serve kind of spot. That's our bad for making that assumption, but now that I'm reading other Yelp reviews, this seems to be a years-old customer service issue. But it makes sense, since exclusivity seems to be part of the business plan (i.e. small/limited seating, reservations only). Must be working for them. Didn't work out for us though, at least in the moment. So even though we didn't try the food (I'm sure it's likely amazing), it sucked to make the drive out here. Pro tip: call first --months ahead before you plan to go here and make a reservation! After just reading some of the reviews, I learned you can do take out but must order ahead of time. Not sure how much more ahead of time. So calling would also be a good idea here. Honestly, the amount of work to just get info, a reservation, and ultimately a meal here is starting to feel cumbersome. I'm not sure I'd want to try making the effort again. We did turn a lemon situation into lemonade and instead had dinner at Ken's House of Pancakes, and they never disappoint! Had we eaten at Takenoko, we would've missed out on Ken's oxtail stew, which was listed as part of the day's special menu items, and it was one of the best meals we've had in Hilo. So, it all worked out.

'Cause I grew-up with li hing mui and arare. There's a small number of locally-owned crack seed shops on the Big Island of Hawai'i and in Hawai'i in general. This is one of them, the "local-style candy store" for an island boy like me. I enter 5-Spice, located in East Hawai'i after the intersection of Kilauea Ave and W Puainako St, heading south. I remember frequenting this business when it used to be at Puainako Town Center. Their popularity over the years gave them the ability to move to a larger space. Now independently located in their own building with ample parking. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Would I be able to control myself, holding onto what's desired without adding anything extra? It's always impossible for me to do so. Everytime. Yummy preserved items in large display jars, others placed in vacuum sealed bags. All priced by-the-ounce. I become curious, wanting to taste it again. I go to my favorites, seeking them first while browsing through the visual display of many others. Cracked seed goodness on one side, bagged candies and sweets on the other. I've seen this all before yet, I stand still with the desire to place it all in my hands. And I sure do, my hands are full.
