First clue that the exsperience was going to be bad should of been when my party walked into the resturant during prime dinner time and found it on the empty side. For being nearly empty we waited a considerable time to be seated. Despite the abundance of tables avaible we were still sitted all the way in the back rear of the resturant. Sorry but I do not wish to feel like a frozen solid ice cube when eating. The only bright side was the menu. It was ver designed and constructed and offered many delightful options including an all day breakfast selection. I ordered the fried chicken and chili spagheti special. Glad that this resturant was out of corn. Hate corn. Got the plate with a side of tossed greens. My dinner companion order the same plate but opted to make it a full meal. For an extra $13 you got soup or salad, a bread roll, a drink and choice of dessert. The soup was choosen. For me the coffee was old, cold, and plain nasty. Do npt like half and half. My bad there. Should have asked if it was creamer. My salad was not a salad. It was maybe at most a plate with a tablespoon of old greens dropped on it and ranch in a small side vup. I hate ranch. Should have known better on the salad when I wasnt offered a dressing choice. Choose the vegitrian chili to go over the spagheti. I like my chili hearty. My companions soup although very small tea cup portion was good. However the crackers served with it were old and stale. For both plates the spaghtei noofles were eay under cooked. Very tasteless when you cool manage to chew a noodle. The amount of chili over noodles give me a break. Not even a small baby jar amount. The chili was mostly a red sauce with a couple of mushroom pieces. The garlic bread was overtoasted just shy of brunt. The chicken was crisp so bad the meat melted away. It was flavorless. The water had an aftertaste. My companions mug root beef was flat and definetly jot up to MUG standards. All this with piss poor service. Waitress ignored us most of the time. Took forever in between ordering and foos service. Very forgetfull. Got our orders mixed up. Didnt really seem to know the menu. I left feeling empty and depressed from uneditable food to a very cold dark dismal atmosphere. And why am I being charged to top the kitchen help. Their hired for the chef job to cook. They are not interacting with me the custonmer. They are not delivering the food. Most of the time the kitchen is extremely loud and not from anything to do with the job. BIG ISLAND HAWAII 2023 VACATION #1: FIRST DINNER The first time I visited the Big Island was in 2018 to attend my nephew's high school graduation. Five years later I came back to the Big Island to attend his sister's high school graduation. Last week on Tuesday I arrived on the Big Island. I wanted to go to Zippy's as I've watched episodes of "Saimin Says" on Hawaiian Airlines when I was leaving Honolulu for Oakland on November 2020. The timing of going to Zippy's on Tuesday was fortunate because most of the restaurants I wanted to eat were closed on Tuesdays. When I arrived at Kona International Airport last week on Tuesday afternoon I drove about 1.5 hour to Hilo for my only meal at the Big Island that night. I ordered the chicken trio daily plate (fried chicken, chicken katsu, and Korean fried chicken) and saimin. As a mainlander I've ordered chicken katsu at other Hawaiian eateries in California and I have to say they are not crispy and moist as the chicken katsu I ate at Zippy's. The other two chicken items were also tasty. Saimin is becoming my favorite Hawaiian food as it's comfort food. Having a hot bowl of saimin at Zippy's, even though the weather was warm in the afternoon, was satisfying. Holy hell. We are from Oahu and visiting Hilo. Yes, I know. We should've ate something else but we were rushing and we THOUGHT this was going to be quick. First, there were THREE workers in the front and all of them pretending not to see the growing line of people waiting to order food. When we were finally MOTIONED over with one hand and a smirk, FROM THE MANAGER, she interrupted me saying they didn't have chicken so there's no surf pac, no vegas pac etc. WHAT KINE ZIPPYS NO MOA CHICKEN?!?! Instead of taking that as a sign, we ordered something else. Was given a total and handed the receipt with no eye contact, no thank you, no go to hell, nothing. She was looking the other way and handed the receipt to me on the side. After that, we waited almost 55 minutes for CHILI and spaghetti...you know the kine stuff that's ALREADY COOKED and you just have to plop onto a plate? Yeah. One sis was working hard but she could only put out the food as fast as the kitchen could. Manager then says while walking to the back, "I'm so fu$&ing tired". THEN while in the back, expeditor says what she's still waiting on and someone from the kitchen yells for her to "come back here and make it yourself". WHAT?! I'm amazed that this place has customers. There were at least 25 people waiting for their food...some of them waiting even before us. I feel bad for you guys Hilo! Come O'ahu. No consistency. Got the Korean Chicken Breakfast Plate. This is what was given to me. This "plate" was $18. It looks partially eaten. Asked the server about it and she just told me that it only comes with 3 pieces. I also had asked for fried rice and was given white. Last time I ordered at this same Zippy's, I was double charged for a Korean Chicken Platter. Called the manager and he told me he would call me back. Never got a call back. It's been months. You get more than what you pay for big portions of Hawaiian fast food served up in a diner setting - I love it love the bakery love the clam chooser love the Teri beef the Kari's chicken is excellent and even like the fries and the fact they give tokens to kids to get toys is super cute. The delas they have are awesome but don't come in expecting a gormet meal and you won't be disappointed.
