The negative... I don't think the beginning hip hop class is for "serious" dancers. They are there learning basic moves and I think they are more focused on making it fun as opposed to technique. This is actually what we wanted, but if you were wanting it needing your classes to be more technique oriented, this is not the class for you. Maybe the higher levels focus a bit more on that but I wouldn't know. All in all, my daughter likes it very much and we keep going back. We wanted something to do together that was fun and to make sure we all had the basics of some line dances before we headed out. In the texts and call leading up to our first session we told them exactly what we were interested in, even sending YT video links. When we arrived, the instructor had no clue and instead insisted the we learn the one he wanted us to. And to be fair, as soon as we stepped in it was clear this studio is really not geared for line dances. I wish they would have just told us that. If you want ballroom or wedding first dance stuff, they look like a place to check out. But for casual small group stuff, I would not recommend. But, we had some fun and, since this was a gift to a friend, we even went for our second session, figuring the instructor had seen what we could do. Again, we told him EXACTLY what we wanted. Still, when we arrived for the second session, the instructor had not given our wish list a look. While we waited, he did go look at a video for Shivers, and then attempted to teach it. It was terrible. Heck, even anyone who has seen DWTS knows you count movements. When we asked him to, it was clear he was annoyed and his steps were not even close to the many videos online. Furthermore, I don't think he taught any of the dances the same way twice. Sometimes we would end one way, sometimes halfway through the steps, etc. It's clear from his moves, when we saw him working with a solo before we arrived, that he is a good dancer, just not the type of dancing we were looking for. It was super disappointing as these sessions were a gift for one of the people going on the cruise. Ballroom dancing, sure they are worth a look, but you had better make sure they are going to teach you what you want and NOT what they want to teach. Or ask them to just tell you that they don't teach what you are looking for.

Most places it is an older dancer that works with them and while it's not necessarily a bad thing, it's also not the most beneficial. At The Dance Space, Tara (THE OWNER) teaches the little ones. WHAT? That's right. I personally danced for 13 years and didn't have a studio owner/director work with me until I was 11 or 12. Plus, Tara has more patience and skill with these children than I could ever imagine. Even as a new student, my daughter was welcomed so warmly. We are so happy here and hope to have a long tenure with The Dance Space.
