They don't do a small portion of the lamb so we got the regular size. It was the perfect amount of food shared between me and my husband. He loooooved how smoky and flavorful the meat was. A side was included and we went with plantains. They were cooked PERFECTLY. Will definitely be back! Our first time trying Senegalese food too. wonderful service and vibes too. Good for groups, got our food out super speedy too. 10/10 no notes
10/10 no notes... but since it's Yelp, I'll leave some positive ones. This place is everything I love about Houston, the ability to eat a cuisine from everywhere. As a Liberian, learning about the Jollof originators gives me a welcome opportunity to eat more rice. Their whole fish is excellent too, flavorful and flaky. Everyone was friendly and locals seemed to patronize as well which is always a good sign. I will absolutely be returning to try more things.
One of the best African cuisine restaurants I tried so far. Everything was outstanding. The ginger beverage, was so refreshing. Service was pretty good overall. It's a casual restaurant don't expect much for ambiance. However, they do have a few African clothes, maps and etc. I would definitely return and recommend to others.
Although they were out of lamb, the oxtail with rice was delicious and had a spicy kick to it which is a sign that it's authentic despite that the inside didn't look like much. Even though I arrived about an half hour before closing, I still felt welcomed by the staff.
This was our first time ever having Nigerian food. It was amazing! Food: we ordered the oxtails and empanadas. Everything we tried was delicious and flavorful. Service: excellent. You can order at the counter or take a seat and they'll come to you. The place is very clean. Don't let the location scare you off. We will come back to try the tilapia
Dakar Street Food delivered an incredible dining experience that left my sister and niece thoroughly impressed. We arrived on a weekday around 5:00 p.m., and it was quiet - a perfect setting to take our time and truly savor the meal. By the time we left around 7:30, the restaurant was filling up, a testament to its well-deserved popularity. Now, the food: Poisson Braise - The Senegalese-style grilled tilapia was phenomenal. Perfectly cooked, fused with a tangy lemon pepper glaze, and paired beautifully with sweet plantains. A must-try. Fataya - We ordered half fish and half beef. These Senegalese empanadas were packed with well-seasoned ground fish and beef. Crispy, flavorful, and so satisfying. Nem - Senegalese-style spring rolls filled with spiced beef - crispy on the outside, deliciously Savory on the inside. Dakar Oxtails- The ultimate comfort dish. I'm Nigerian, so I love me a good oxtail! Slow-braised to perfection, rich in flavor, and paired with carrots, potatoes, and white rice. Tender and deeply satisfying. The sauce had a bit of a tang to it, which wasn't my favorite, but the oxtails were delicious. Plantains - Always a win. Always. Sweet, caramelized, and the perfect side for just about everything. Drinks - The Bissap was a refreshing hibiscus tea that was really just like the Zobo we drink in the Nigerian culture. The passion fruit lemonade was absolutely incredible. It was bright, tangy, and sweet in all the right ways. I wish I could order a gallon! The Boute (baobab juice) wasn't my favorite, but it's worth trying for those who enjoy nutty, creamy flavors. Beyond the food, the service was exceptional. Our server was attentive, warm, and made sure we had everything we needed. He was funny, patient, and generally made the experience even better! This was our first visit but definitely not our last. My sister even told me she had it a whopping two more times that next week. Lol. If you want authentic Senegalese cuisine in a welcoming atmosphere, Dakar Street Food is the place to go!
Back again to my fav place! Ordered the mixed dibi but the lamb wasn't available so they gave me all chicken which was a bummer but fine, I also ordered fish fatayas which may be my new fav thing on the menu. The service is always great here and the food is made fresh forreal. 10/10 once again!
I went here with three of my friends and we had a phenomenal experience. The service was great, they were attentive to us and answered all our questions which allowed us decide what to order. The food was really good and the portions were large, especially for the price point. The place was also very nice and family friendly, we took ordered extra food to go and still got their food the next day
The outside is pretty sketchy. I'm sure some would be scared lol. I was offered weed for sale by a lady, she was friendly about it when I declined. Another guy was sitting in front of the dispensary smoking a huge blunt, old school philly style blunt. No one bothered me I went and got a tea from the corner store as I didn't care for the hibiscus drink I got at Dakar. So the chick wanted to try something different. This place has a great rating on yelp so we tried. The inside is fine large dining area. Little cloths rack. Large tv that wasn't playing much just still shots. We ordered fish, jerk chicken, and lamb. The lamb was tough as could be. You gotta fight that lamb to eat it, he ain't going down easy either. Jerk chicken, little pieces of chard chicken. Some were edible, and of that some, some were pretty good. The winner here was the fish. It came with some very good carmilized onions. Normally I wouldn't think much of onions but these were very good with the rice. The fish has like a onion citrus marinade. Its very good. You need to watch out for bones obviously. But very good. I had the drink I didn't care for at the start of the meal before food came. Very strong hibiscus flavor, not a lot of sugar. So thats when I went on my adventure to the corner store. All in all I'd go back for the fish. Go try it, don't be scared of the corner store folk. They wont bother you.

This was my first time trying Senegalese food and it was so full of flavor. The restaurant was clean and the music was a vibe. The service was very polite and quick as well as the food which was hot and yum.
So sad this place is far from me. The atmosphere down to the food reminds me of Senegal. The customer service was outstanding. The waiter even complimented my Wolof. Highly recommend this place for good Senegalese food!
The hospitality at Dakar Street Food feels like home. Warm, inviting, centered, intentional and fulfilling! Cuisine was suggested by a friend on a late Tuesday afternoon after errands. We arrived and found an empty vessel but there something filling awaiting. We were immediately greeted upon entering by Elhadji, friendly, informative and attentive. We decided upon a selection of Fataya (Beef & Fish), Fish being my favorite, Mix Dibi/Chicken Dibi, Jollof, and Nem. Chicken & Lamb was juicy and flavorful. Plantains were perfect; sweet and comforting. The food was prepared with intention and love. It was served on wooden plates, my goodness. The drinks were amazing. We tasted the Passion Fruit Lemonade, Bouye, and my personal favorite the Bissap! I ordered one to go and saved it for later. Leftovers reheated very well. Everyone loved their food and was throughly satisfied with food and excellent service. Elhadji spoke about his home with such respect and pride; it was beautiful to learn about some I've only seen an hear from afar. It was a great experience to have and the customer service alone grants me future visits. The restaurant feels like kitchen at home. They have games such as UNO, Foosball table and a Disco Ball. The restrooms were proper and clean. I will definitely visit Dakar Street Food again. Even if you are apprehensive about trying something different, DO IT! You will not be let down and will be surprised at your experience. Try them out today and see for yourself!
It was one of those days where we couldn't decide what to eat. I made some choices and put them in a random choice picker and this is where we ended up. Senegalese food! First tip: Bring CASH to tip! The server told us the card machine is not set up to receive gratuities so she just bypassed it and said it was okay without a tip. That didn't sit well with me because I use to be in hospitality. I ended up sending her a tip via Zelle. We came on a Saturday and there was a soccer game playing. There was a small crowd of dedicated fans and they were cheering and hooting for their team. The menu was small and there were items we wanted that wasn't available. All good though because we ended up eating delicious food! Stuff we ordered: Fataya (fish)- Fried empanada with seasoned fish. Not bad, and it came with an onion dipping sauce. Jerk Chicken w/ Plantains- One of the best jerk chicken dishes I've tasted! The sweet plantains complimented the spicy chicken perfectly. Poisson Braise- Grilled tilapia. Crispy and well seasoned. I don't usually eat tilapia, but this dish was worth it! Ginger Drink and Passionfruit Lemonade- Both refreshing drinks, but too sweet for my liking. This hole in the wall gem serves up yummy west African food. This was my first time having authentic African/Sengalese food. However I came with a Sengalese and a Nigerian and they both said vouched for the food as authentic. The portions are a good size and everything came out fresh. I had the Jerk chicken with plantains, my friends had the fish diti, chicken diti, and paella. Our plates were clean when we left. The restaurant is a little sparce but it was welcoming. The staff was very friendly and prepared our food with care. I hope that I get a chance to try more food in the future. read more

I ordered the Poisson Braise and they told me it would be ready in 20 minutes. I waited for over an hour and there were no updates and I did not receive my order. Meanwhile, the other people I was with got their orders within the timeframe that was estimated. I waited all the way until closing time and never received my order or an update. read more

Crap, absolute shite....ordered the lamb shanks at 24.00 got 3 skinny what I can only describe as mutton. No chance for medium rare when they are literally 1/4 inch thin read more
For a mid Sunday afternoon, I was looking for something full of flavor, different from the usual restaurant fare. Dakar Street Food was the landing spot, and I was glad of it since I love Senegalese did. The fatayas were out of this world. Instead of a spicy tomato sauce for dipping, there were onions. The fatayas already had a spicy kick. The whole grilled fish and plantains were the best. I washed it all down with bissap. The restaurant is in a small strip mall that's not on a street that gets heavy traffic. It looks small from the outside, but it is quite spacious inside. Based on my exposure to Senegalese food in Chicago and in Senegal, they hit the mark. I'm going back next time I'm in Houston. read more

This is such a cool place. Food is AMAZING and the service is super friendly. Fried tilapia is to die for, and my son had to take an extra serving of their tartar sauce with him home. Give it a try - you will not be disappointed. Also delicious drinks - passion fruit lemonade was outstanding. read more

I would 100% recommend the Dakar Street Food restaurant to anyone interested in trying this amazing cuisine! The staff is super healthful and friendly! Our server recommended the oxtails and the fish. My husband ordered the oxtails and I had the tilapia and couscous. We ordered the beef fataya for our appetizer and everything was AMAZING!! Oh, I cant forget the fresh, refreshing drinks. Another great suggestion was hibiscus bissap and ginger drink! Everything was bursting with flavor and came out hot with a wonderful presentation! The food and service were matched onluly by the beautiful ambience! read more

I was in town for work and looking for some unique food. Dakar Street food did not disappoint!! The Saturday Special (Cepp Jen bou khong) was recommended by the hostess and it was by far the best fish I have ever had. A full tilapia seasoned perfectly and the meat fell right off the bones. The rice and veggies were just as good and round out the meal perfectly. The ginger juice was also amazing! A huge amount of food for the price! I had to bring the extras home. I'll likely be back before heading home at the end of the week. read more

Fantastic food and customer service! Came here after lunch on a weekday and it's behind a neighborhood filled with apartments. It was empty but the chef/host was very polite and accommodating. I had the Poisson Braise with plantains and it was amazing and freshly cooked. It did take some time but I wasn't in any rush. The fish itself is cooked well, not spicy and the marinade in it was flavorful and robust. It had hints of citrus in it. It's very light and pairs well with the plantains! Even the tartar sauce was stellar and I could tell they used their own pickles to make it. The chef came out and was super social and cordial. He mentioned that he does some of the cooking and asked if it was my first time trying this dish and it was! Really love the fish here and I'd come back soon to try the Jollof rice. read more

Their daily specials bring an explosion of savory flavor, with just the right level of spiciness. The portions here are incredibly generous, and the friendly staff is more than happy to guide you through the dishes, which is especially helpful if you're new to Senegalese food like I was. My Dibi Chicken dish was big enough to last me two meals! There is ample parking outside and it's a true hole-in-the-wall find. The interior is clean, but it could use better AC in this Texas heat. I'm so glad I also ordered the mixed Dibi because both the lamb and chicken were tender and perfectly seasoned. My only regret is not ordering more food. I will be back. read more

Hands down the best west African food I've ever had. Period. I've been ordering from this place for a few years, not only are their dishes so tasty, but what really gets me coming back is their consistency. There's been times I've called just to thank them, as a foodie you can tell when the chef takes pride in what they prepare and this place always delivers. I've tried many dishes but favs are c'est bon, poisson braise, jerk chicken, fataya, juice boye, hibiscus drink, and ginger drink. My boyfriend wants to try the food now because I can't stop raving about it each time I order from there (lol), he may not be foodie like me but I like that he's open to broadening his pallet. Next time, we will definitely eat there. read more

First time trying Senegalese/Caribbean food was a great experience with friendly staff and delicious food! The restaurant seems small on the outside, but there is plenty of space inside. It's located in a small strip mall and there is a small parking lot that it shares with other businesses, but we had no trouble finding a spot. I went for lunch on a Wednesday and there was no one dining in, so we were able to sit anywhere we wanted without waiting. There was a mix of booth and table seating. No outdoor seating. Lots of TVs inside. The staff was very friendly, and she helped us a lot with making choices. This was our first time trying Senegalese food, so we were glad she was so willing to explain the food and give recommendations. The menu is in English with good descriptions. They also have pictures of the food shown on a TV screen. The food was very good. We especially loved the rice, ginger drink (spicy and sweet!), and fish fataya (Senegalese-style empanadas.) The presentation was neat and appealing. Note that they do have daily specials! read more
