Food: We tried fufu. I got the okra and my husband got the goat. No picture because it just looked that good and I just wanted to eat it. Okra was delicious! It had so much flavor in it mmmm! My husband loved his goat meat he didn't leave behind a single thing, cleaned the whole plate...at his fufu and then some of mine. Service/ambiance: They are the sweetest people you'll ever meet. It was obvious we didn't know anything about the menu and several people approached us to help us get something they think we would like. Didn't even feel like we were eating out but instead eating at a friend's or family's house. Which totally made me feel like I was in someone's living room looking at their mantle, versus at a restaurant. But it added a touch of culture and a huge sense of pride. This place is located in a super shady area and can be hard to find, but is as authentic as you can get. The restaurant is family owned, and the food is pretty good. I had the Jolof Rice and the owner was kind enough to let us try some fufu too. The flavors are unique and unlike anything I've had before. During covid they actually open at 1pm on Sundays (as opposed to 12:30 listed on their site/google). I personally have not eaten too much African food before, but the owner was kind and helpful in explaining. When I went with my sister, we were the only ones dining in. The owner sat with us and explained what was on the menu. Later after eating, the cook helped us pack our leftovers. (She could have simply just given us the box and let us do this ourself.) The owner might seem a bit inattentive/aloof but I promise he's friendly and kind. Overall I would probably come again. Nothing I would order again, & goat meat being $5 extra for a few pieces is pretty excessive. The customer service was good, the environment ok. But the peanut soup I would rate 6/10. Jollof rice is really the extent of my experience with Ghanaian food, so my friend and I decided to instead take advantage of the stew and fufu meals and ordered a Goat Pepper stew and Egusi Soup with fried fish and pounded yam. I like that there were different options for how the fish was cooked or that we could even choose the meat in our stew. Both soups were flavorful and warming, and the pounded yam was the perfect vehicle. They Occupy the space next-door for storage and it is visible to the public. It's very cluttered with cooking supplies. I moved past that and placed my order anyway. I purchased the fried chicken with the Jollof rice. The food was horrible. The Fried chicken was not edible! It was fried without any coating on it so it dried out the chicken and it was very hard to eat. The chicken was cut in a weird way it did not resemble chicken so I questioned the type of meat that it was. The Jollof rice was not good! Not happy with the food! So the great thing I love about this place is that it seems pretty authentic from the feel to the food. The owner has African style music playing in the background, and it's small and cozy. He's also really nice, and it seems like a fun place for people to just hang out and enjoy each other's company. But, it is a bit dinghy. I understand that mom and pop shops aren't going to be amazing, but I felt like the tables were a bit sticky, and the store wasn't in the safest of neighborhoods. It was actually in the way back of an empty looking shopping strip and took a second to find. I think it was just the feeling of it not being super clean that kind of got to me. Food: I didn't know what to expect honestly from this place and relied on other yelp reviews to know what to order. We ordered the peanut butter soup with goat meat and the cassava fufu. The soup had a pretty good taste, it had subtle hints of peanut butter and was rich and creamy, and while the goat meat was tender, there were still skin and fat on it that was a bit off putting. The fufu is like a dough type bread that you use to eat it with the soup, and had a consistency sort of like playdoh. The cassava made it taste a bit sour, but I think that's normal. I would try it with something else, maybe yam or plantain. We also got the joife rice with the beef which I enjoyed a lot more than the soup. The rice is a soft seasoned rice and a bit oily but tasted so good! It was well seasoned and I could probably eat this by itself. It came with a side of beef in a tomato sauce, and I say side because I felt like the rice was the star of the dish. The beef actually tasted like a ragu type dish and was tender and moist. I heard the plantain fries were good too, but we weren't hungry enough to order it. The portions were normal. They don't seem like there's a lot, but I think because there's a lot of starches and carbs in the plates we ordered, it was enough to make us full. Price: This is probably the main reason why I knocked this place down a few stars.... It was way too overpriced!!! For the amount of food you get, it isn't worth it in my opinion. Both our plates were $15 each, and it just wasn't a lot. Sure, it looked homemade, but that doesn't always mean it's a good thing. The plating was pretty haphazard and plates didn't match. Just overall did not feel like it should be sold for $15. They also don't give free water cups. Water is sold in bottles and is $1 each. service: the food didn't take too long to get to the table, but I wouldn't suggest going when you're on a time crunch or during lunch. The owner was nice, but because he was the only one there, it took him a while to get the check and stuff. Also, in the back, I could hear him putting stuff on the plate but didn't hear him cook anything, so made me wonder how fresh the food was... This place is a hidden gem! It's located near a run down area off bissonnet with a makeshift sign that points to the restaurant depending on which direction you're coming from. If from the 59 highway, it'll be on your left. The restaurant is very tiny and it's not the cleanest but the food is delicious. We were recommended to try their popular dishes being the peanut butter soup, rice, goat soup, fufu which is a type of dough to dip into the peanut butter soup, fried tilapia and fried plantains. We didn't get too much meat from the tilapia but this does come out whole meaning it's not precut for you so you get the entire fish on the serving plate. The fufu dough was ok, it doesn't taste like anything so we didn't like it too much even when we dipped it into the soup. The jollof rice was so flavorful and chewy. The goat soup had about several chunks of goat meat with the bone. It wasn't very tender so it was harder to chew. Water bottles are given since I'm assuming they don't have tap. It got real rowdy past 9pm with a group nearby us and the restaurant dimmed the lights and turned up the music. It may as well have turned into a nightclub or bar. Afrikikko is a 5 star place in a 1-star neighborhood but I don't care! I will travel to ends of the earth for great food! Especially African food! Lol I have come to this place off and on for the past 15 years! They are probably the best when it comes to authentic West African food here in Houston. My favorite go-to dishes are pounded yam and ogbono soup. The okra soup is delicious as well. The jollof rice and red stew also deserves an honorable mention. This place is definitely worth a try if you like exploring new cuisines and eclectic neighborhoods of H-Town. I, for one, definitely have a strong liking for hole-in-the-wall places and this one fit the description. It's West African food, from Ghana. Menu was semi-elaborate which made ordering a challenge, since half the things on the menu you have never heard of. The owners of the restaurant (I think they were a husband wife team) were really helpful in making recommendations and helping us choose our food. A must have here is the Fufu - which is this doughy thing that you dip in your curry/soup and eat. It resembles...well, pizza dough and is quite doughy and filling. The texture was like a chinese pork bun but more dense. The fufu itself comes in 4-5 different variations - we had one made with yam and one with oatmeal and both were really good to soak up the curry/soup. I ordered the deep-fried fish which came with a Jambalaya style rice and a savory gravy. It was good, nothing spectacular. Order only if you are ok with picking bones out and deboning fish with your hands. The Fufu I mentioned earlier was actually an accompaniment to the much spoken about Peanut Butter soup. The soup (think of a curry, more than soup) was the only reason I took a couple stars off for this place. Don't get me wrong - the liquid part of the soup was delicious - sweet, savory, balanced, tasty, and just perfect to soak up with the fufu............but the goat meat I opted for in my soup is what spoilt my entire meal for me. They leave a thick layer of fat/gristle on the goat meat when serving it. This gristle was inedible even for the staunchest of carnivores and goat-eaters like me. I am not sure if other people who have had this soup felt the same. I had to discard the meat and eat just the soup, something which I don't think I have done ever. 5/5 for the excitement and uniqueness of the Ghana cuisine. 1/5 for the goat gristle used in the Peanut butter soup (I don't think it appeals to the american palette).
