With all the construction around Des Moines it seems that on a biweekly basis we need to have one of our tires patched or replaced due to picking up a nail or screw. I have just purchased an older truck and for some reason decided to take it to Dale's instead of the dealership where I normally get service done. I think I thought the dealership would be more expensive. I took the truck to Dale's because it needed one of the O2 sensors replaced. I also wanted them to check to see if they could get the cruise control working. After running the diagnostic they identified which O2 sensor needed to be replaced. The total price for that was a little over $200. Then they told me I needed a new u joint & drive shaft bearing. Since this sounded serious I went ahead and agreed to that. Now my bill was going to be over $600. Next they told me I should get the struts and shocks replaced. Their price for that would be $887.90. I declined to have that done since I live on a fixed income and was already spending more than I had intended. When I finally got the truck home I saw that it needed an oil change. I decided to go to Charles Gabus (my normal service place) for that. I was going to spend $60 there to have the oil change and get a complete check up. When they gave me the report for the truck it had a clean bill of health. No mention of any shock & strut work being needed. Now I am questioning if the little truck really needed a new bearing. I fear I made a bad decision going to Dale's. Please be careful. read more

My usual place was booked through Monday (ain't nobody got time for that!) so I turned to trusty Yelp to find another safe place for a quick oil change. Sean on the phone was pleasant and said see ya in twenty minutes! I sped across town, only made one wrong turn because the intersection of Euclid and whatever street I came off of was rather squirrely... and found Dale's Wright Tire & Auto Service. It looked a bit like a big warehouse from the outside; parked on the side and followed the clear signage to the customer entrance where I met Dale (Dale himself!?). Very nice guy. He asked if I'd ever been there, we did the whole make, model, address thing and he directed me to either of the two waiting rooms. (Which is kind of cool in case you don't want to watch Dr. Phil with the room full of strangers.) There was popcorn and coffee, typical waiting area magazines to catch up on pop culture. I was also appreciative of him pointing out the restroom location without me having to ask. Efficient work, glad it was a quick errand -- so far so good on the car. They told me about an oil leak they noticed (sans any pressure to have it fixed there). I would definitely return and do recommend Dale's. read more

Brought my car here months ago after being referred by family. Was making some noises and I'd been told that it was the belt tensioner. After just a couple of hours they called and told me they'd checked the tensioner and it was just fine. She told me it had a different issue, and I approved it to be fixed. Later they called and said they'd found more issues, 2x. It totaled $1,500 after all was said and done, and took a few hours. Picked up my car the next morning and the sound and issue I'd taken it in for was still there. Called them immediately and Dale checked it out, said he wanted to try something else, so I left it again. He called and said it didn't make a difference, so I took my car back. He referred me to a friend that was an auto electrician, who charged me hundreds to tell me he couldn't find any problems. I spent months taking my car all over the place while telling them, "I've had the tensioner checked and it's not the problem." Well, finally I found a GOOD mechanic, that said, "I don't care what someone else told you, it's the tensioner." He charged me $300, changed it and all my problems are now gone. He also asked to see my paperwork from Dale's and he said, "WOW, they ripped you off! They charged you $1,500 for a tune-up! That's all they did!" So yeah, I'm extremely disappointed with this place. Wasted not only hundreds of dollars, but also months of my time and many, many mechanic appointments. Definitely will never be back. read more

I continue to go to Dale's shop and this is an update since the normal oil changes/tire rotations I typically get. My Saturn Ion has an extended warrenty on the power steering as a recall item. My power steering went out recently and took it to Bob Brown to get it fixed, it was covered. In the process, that dealership found rear rubber bushings that were cracked, a legit problem. They also told me in the next few months I would need to replace my struts because they were beginning to leak. So, went in for free power steering replacement and left with a quote of newly found problems for just about $1400!! I was freaking out and thought about just trading my car in. Instead, I headed to Dale's shop and his diagnosis was a little different. Strutts didn't need to be replaced at all. Yes, the bushings needed to be replaced, something difficult to diagnose apparently and I should have been listening to my car noises. Dale quoted $360 for the bushings but it turned out I didn't need the extra $60 repair and left with only a $300 bill! This is an honest business and proving they don't mess with people by over charging and selling only what needs to be replaced. If I had gone with the dealership I would have been in the hole $1400. $1100 of that in needless repairs!!! That boggles my mind. You know, Bob Brown gave me a free car wash coupon which I will use since in their old location the wash never worked so they owe me one. Dale proves to be an honest car repair shop over and over again. No problems with my car since. They do a great job. read more

If you think there are no more honest mechanics, you're wrong. Dales is the best, most honest hardworking mechanic in town. Been taking my family's cars there for years. Can't remember how many times they said no need to do a repair I thought needed. Work always done on time, on price with no surprises. Car repair? Go nowhere else. read more

We stopped here because U-haul vehicle assistance sent us here for help with a minor repair to our moving truck. They were extremely helpful, polite and magnificent customer service. Be very wary of doing any business with Dale Wright's Auto and Tire. I rented a U-Haul from them to haul 3 piece of furniture 1 way that was supposed to be full of fuel that was about a quarter tank light. 64 miles driven and I was on the hook for 14 gallons of gas. A U-Haul that size and load should average 10-12 mpg and I got 4 mpg on my trip. Merchant was unwilling to work with me at all despite the obvious short comings on their end of the transaction. Fuel receipt provided and they acknowledged that the mpg was unusually low. If they are shady on one area of business they will be shady on all areas of business. read more

The people here were very friendly and personable. They had a cozy spot for me to wait and had my repair done within 20 minutes. I would definitely recommend this shop and I will be going back in the future if it is needed! read more
