They did a poor job fixing up my vehicle for prices that were somehow even worse. There are much better places out there

Do not bring your vehicle to this shop. They will scare you into thinking your vehicle is dangerous to drive to push you to pay their bloated prices. Don't fall for it. Twice this shop blew issues way out of proportion in order to upsell the repairs. Told me my entire brake system was screwed when all it needed was a couple fluid lines replaced. They quoted $1700 and the actual necessary repair was $520 at a shop that didn't try to tack on unnecessary repairs to pad their bottom line. I went to them for a diagnostic for a check engine light which I already knew was for a vapor/evap leak. The second issue was a noise from the right front wheel area. They diagnosed the first issue and then did not diagnose the second issue. They then told me that I had a laundry list of other issues which would total over $5000 in repairs if I let them handle it and tried to scare me that my vehicle was unsalvageable due to rust. Took it to a rust specialist who said the rust is superficial and can be prevented from progressing with an undercoating. They tried to argue that I declined the diagnostic for the brakes which wasn't true at all, I declined their exorbitant repair prices and took it to another shop where I paid literally 1/3 for the two whole repairs it actually needed. $1650 out of my pocket instead of the $5k Smith wanted for the biggest issues. read more

Lets start with, they have a quality shop, employees seem nice, but when it comes to the billing they are double if not tripple the cost that you would pay at other repair shops (including top notch Dealerships). & I couldn't take my 2020 truck elsewhere because I was already billed for towing and the diagnostics. But after 11 years of doing business there, we are 100% done with this place. They billed me $564 AND billed our eXtended warranty people an ADDITIONAL $511 for a simple starter replacement. I walked in not knowing if anything was really wrong with my car. Shifting between gears just felt "off". They listened respectfully, took the car for a drive and didn't really see any issue. However, they had listened to this old lady and replied that they would next take an internal look. They added some lube and it now feels like new! I can't tell you how much I appreciated their immediate work and most especially how they listened. The cherry on top is that they didn't charge me a cent!!! I would have gladly paid for their time. Complete rip-off. Nice people I guess. Got quoted over $300 to replace my ac compressor belt. Took it to Mobile super service close to downtown dsm and got it done for $120. This place way overcharges to the point scamming people. Complete trash way of doing business read more

There is only one thing worse then seeing the "check engine" light come on-- it's when you're on vacay and 1500 miles from home! Smith's Automotive has the BEST CUSTOMER and REPAIR service I've ever experienced! They were professional, fast, and worth every star in this rating. They gave us a loaner car so we could continue our vacay in the area. Even coming to our campground to help me when I couldn't figure out how to start the Prius!! I was impressed with the honesty, expert knowledge, and the frequent progress reports. They coordinated our service warranty contract (in Wyoming) with the repairs, and had us back on vacay in 48 hours. We left Smith's Auto with absolute satisfaction and feeling like we had met new friends. Thanks to all-from the front office to the folks that washed the car when the repair was finished. read more

I am delayed posting this, however, We were on an extended road trip starting in San Diego and found ourselves in Iowa. We just by chance happened to notice that it appeared we were losing water somewhere in the engine. I called the dealership (dodge) and was told it would be 2 weeks before our situation could be addressed. Not knowing who to call we started asking the locals. We were ultimately led to Smith's and they had us come right in. The shop was so clean and the staff amazingly courteous. After diagnosing our problem they determined our vehicle was under warranty and called the dealership ahead and made arrangements for our transfer. Wow. Can't say enough about these guys. For being in unfamiliar territory they treated us like family. read more

This place is WAY over priced. I am not saying there aren't nice people or good mechanics, but it is all about the $s. The owner had to pawn me off on someone that wouldn't be a jerk to talk to about my car. Let me just say that they have the same parts as Advanced Auto but at OVER twice the price. They charge over $100 to "look at" your car. Paying over $1000 for an alternator, belt and battery - I literally feel taken advantage of to put it nicely. I would have taken it somewhere else, but since it was not running and I was already into them for $200, if I would have paid to have it towed elsewhere it would nearly be a wash. read more

First off they had my truck for over a month before they could finally get somebody to work on The main reason why I brought my truck there in the first place, because it wasn't even running. I put on the paper what issues I wanted them to look at. First issue to fixed would/should of been to get it to turn over, but no, they decided to order the parts and work on the E brake that wasn't working properly. That doesn't make much sense to me but seems like they were just trying to do whatever they could to make money on it first before dealing with the real issue to why I brought it there in the first place. After charging me $775 I ended up selling it because they said it had a bad piston in it and that the motor would need to be disassembled to fix that issue. Well needless to say the "kid"that I sold it to you took it home and within 24 hours had it running perfectly fine. He told me that the only thing that was wrong was a fuel injector was stuck open in the numbers two cylinder which caused it to run rich in that cylinder. If you are looking for an honest place for auto fixes look no farther than this place. After finding out a few wires and not the alternator were to blame for car problems the mechanic had my mom on her way in little time and doing only what needed done. I would not hesitate to use this mechanic for all my needs. read more

This place was awesome! The customer service here is the BEST I've had ANYWHERE since I've moved out there to the midwest. I had a coil burn out on the freeway coming home from a trip. I was still 3 hours from home and in tears not knowing what to expect. Not knowing where I was, I googled auto repair shops that were closest to where I was. Smith's was 2 miles down the road, so I called explained my situation and they told me to come on in. Not knowing what to expect I was a little shaken up. They offered me hot chocolate and the tv remote and before I knew it they had me back on the road within a couple of hours. The staff was SO friendly, engaged conversation with me, and super quick turn around service. I was charged $270 for parts and labor (coil and spark plug) which is super reasonable compared to what i had to pay before for replacing a coil. They use Napa auto parts which come with 2 year warranties and I know to be a good trusted brand. I wish these dudes were closer to where I live because I would LOVE to have them for my regular mechanics. Seriously, I can't rave enough about what a positive experience I had here. read more
