He is always thorough, knowledgeable, and someone I trust to get the job done right every time. Steph is wonderful at the front, making check-in smooth and easy and always so polite and helpful when it comes time to pick up and pay. The owners, Todd and Nick, are also great to work with and clearly care about both their customers and their team. You can tell the entire staff takes pride in what they do. I normally don't post a five-star review but I've had years and years of experience with the Higgins Auto plaza. Not only are they honest but they are good at what they do. They go out of their way to provide you with great customer service all the time. I've had old cars and I've had new or relatively new cars. in both cases they give you an honest appraisal of what you need and what you might need coming up. They provide all kinds of car repair from simple things like oil changes and windshield wiper changes to something more complex like brakes or transmission or engine work and they work with classical cars and brand new cars American cars and foreign cars. I can't recommend them enough for the type of business that they are it's really quite unique in today's world. read more

I've been taking all of my vehicles to this auto shop for about 5-8 years now give or take and from our old minivan, to my old Chevy bucket, to my current truck and my wife's car they are always reliable. They are honest, they explain if you're not auto savvy what's wrong with your vehicle and the best part is they are affordable and you can tell they're not trying to price gouge you and overcharge. I would recommend them to anyone and everyone. I have never gone anywhere else since the first time I stopped in to have a tire patched. I will never go anywhere else. We bought our vehicles from two separate dealers here in town and outside of using up our free oil changes, we have never taken our vehicles anywhere but Higgins. They aren't a huge auto shop, but the positive, honest, inexpensive experience you'll get there is. Some places can't be replicated, and this is definitely one of them. read more

Trustworthy, friendly, and competitive pricing. I had my first experience with Higgins for a routine oil change. At drop off, I mentioned a loud vibration in hopes they could pinpoint the issue. They didn't hesitate. Pat took it for a spin, I investigated the engine and did some research. He informed me that it was a bad engine mount. I paid for the oil change and was so thankful - no charge for diagnosing next steps! I made an appointment to return two days later. He was able to find a part $200 cheaper than the dealership. They have earned a customer for life with me and I would recommend them to anyone! read more

Recently, I needed to take my vehicle in to have some work done and have discovered that Rick has stepped back and his son Nick is now "running" the business. Being a female, I felt he quoted the price very high. I contacted a family member/mechanic out of state and he said it was Considerably more than what his shop would charge for the same services. Stopped in due to an overheating car. Owner Pat Higgins and co-worker Keith were so generous and kind. They looked our car, topped off the fluids, and diagnosed the problem (a head gasket that was just starting to leak). We opted not to fix it then and there, but Pat didn't let us pay for the inspection and coolant. I wouldn't expect anyone to do that for free, but these folks seemed genuinely concerned for the safety and wellbeing of their customers. I had terrible, horrible service other places (Tuffy in West Des Moines) before I found Higgins. Other places would inflate prices, and it seemed like there was always something "wrong" with my car. Well fate has it, when my old car died and had to be towed, it was recommended we tow it to Higgins. Even though that car was officially declared deceased, I was amazed at how professional and straight forward the employees at Higgins were. Keith has always been fair, consistent, and overly generous with his time in sharing his expertise to help us understand our car problems/options. Keith takes the time to get to know you personally and one time there was a simple fix (that still took up his time) and he didn't charge us. We have since moved to NE and my husband recently called Keith to review charges from an auto repair bill. Keith outlined how much his parts would cost and how much labor time the job would entail to help us understand that we were overcharged from another auto-shop. Today, I stopped while driving down I80- headed to College World Series! Long story short - my rotated n balanced tired from yesterday in South Chicagoland area didn't have final full torque to driver side tires-- I truly he no idea what was happening !! This wonderful woman calmed me down n her husband made quick assessment w even quicker fix n even took a drive around block w me to verify noise gone!! That's not the way to treat a customer. In January of 2017 in below zero weather I had a bad tire. They actually came out to my house, took the bad tire off and put on the spare so I could drive it to the shop. They sold me a new tire for less than I had paid for a new one just a year ago. I was shocked when I got the bill - considerably less than what I had expected for all they did. For twelve years I've used Higgins Plaza to recommend and install tires on our vehicles. When another local shop couldn't correctly balance some new tires for me, Higgins did it for less, properly, and quickly. With one vehicle years later, they spent more than an hour cleaning rust from the inside of the wheels to mount some new tires for me. There was no extra charge, they simply do high quality work. Another time, a new tire lost a belt. It drove in, mentioned it had less than 8,000 miles on it, and in 30 minutes they replaced the tire, no charge. read more

every time I bring a vehicle to Higgins Plaza Service, I am blown away by their small-town courtesy, prices, and genuine friendliness. if you don't have this kind of relationship with your current auto mechanic, you owe it to yourself and whatever you drive to check these folks out. today's example: since our last visit, we have replaced our old reliable Subaru outback (which they serviced regularly for years and did a brake job and other stuff for us as well) with a late-model Ford flex. before changing the oil, the mechanic asked if I new what type of oil we have been using (synthetic or non-synthetic or otherwise)? he said there were no stickers or notices anywhere which would indicate which had been used before. I called the dealer (pinicon Ford in independence, iowa--another 5-star review for them, too) and spoke with the mechanic who looked our vehicle up in their computer. now we know, and so does Higgins. and our car is being filled with the 5w20 synth blend now as we speak. thanks, Higgins (and Pinicon Ford)! read more

While recently traveling through Des Moines from Wisconsin, heading to western Kansas, the back brakes on my 2005 Chevrolet Uplander fell completely apart and I had no brakes at all in the rear of the van. What a predicament to be in. Immediately you are at the mercy of a strange mechanic and figure you will surely be taken advantage of. Did not happen! Through reading some of the references about Higgin's here on Yelp I gave them a call first thing in the morning. They allowed me to bring my van in immediately, got the parts ordered up and within approximately 2 hours from the initial call I had new rotors and rear brakes and was back on the road. I felt the price was absolutely perfect. I was treated with the utmost professionalism, received a job very well done and all for what I felt was an amazing price. I was completely relieved and happy with an unexpected repair well handled. I would HIGHLY recommend this service center for thorough, honest work by good mechanics; whether you are just passing through or are a resident of Des Moines. read more

Higgins has always been honest and never tried to over charge with my vehicles. There have been times where I don't think I could have fixed it myself any cheaper. They will only suggest fixing things that need fixed and not tack on a lot of unnecessary things. They are willing to explain what they are doing so I know exactly what is being fixed and how much it will cost before turning a wrench. Have even looked at things for no charge. I would suggest them to anyone. read more
