It's opening hours are oft discussed but remain a thing that seems to be fluid rather than set in stone. It's a definite "auld man" pub and would probably be described by non regulars as "a bit rough". If you're heading to the Barrowlands, and it's open, I'd heartily recommend diving in for a quick pint. It's one of THOSE pubs that you'll tell people you visited, and the tones of conversation will drop to a hush as you recant your tale, doubtless embellishing it as you go; it's what people do. Our friend from London that we took in was scared to even look up from his pint, let alone say a word, because so many people had said "The Sarry Heid? REALLY? ooooft!" when we told them of our plans to visit. It's nothing bad, honestly. It's nothing good, either. It simply exists in the vacuum of the Barras and does quite well for itself. Personally, I like it - but I am a bit weird.

They weren't too bad, a little limey but overall good, so I had 3. I'm not sure of prices, I know I never got change from my tenners and I've heard from other people that drinks are a little steep. I didn't take in as much as the place was getting darker and darker as the night went on. I felt there was no need to dim the lights so much. I know it's to create an atmosphere but I do like to see. I did like the added touch of the charity shop picture of the week in the toilets. It gave a wee description beside the painting telling you about it and the artist. I think it should also say what charity shop it came from too, I think that would be a nice touch. The music was a bit eh... aye, em well different?! Not my taste, but hey each to their own. It was a good atmosphere but then I was in a good crowd. I would like to come back and try their food menu. I could smell good things from their kitchen as it hadn't long closed when we arrived. From their posters they look very active as well with quiz nights and also a knitting evening, which sounds very interesting. It even has it's own facebook page. They also cater for baby discos so encouraging for parents to do something a little different. I think this place will do well and hopefully on my next visit I'll raise them 3 stars up a notch or 2.

Hip, casual atmosphere, good beer on tap, and great food that's way above the average standard of pub grub. We both had the baked haddock, which I was expecting to be some slightly tarted-up variant of the usual fish & chips, but it turned out to be a visual delight as well as tasty, and provided the perfect fuel to fire up the brain cells for the quiz ahead. We did have to wait a while for it to arrive, but the place was pretty packed so that wasn't a surprise, and they were very apologetic about the delay. It was definitely worth the wait, although if I hadn't been so hungry I might have taken more time so savour the taste instead of hoovering it up. I thought the prices were pretty reasonable too. If you like a pub atmosphere and good quality nosh, you could do a lot worse than Sparkle Horse. Although it was our first time tackling what is said to be Glasgow's toughest pub quiz, our team the Sparkle Dorks were victorious over the regulars (although it was a close call!), which means we'll need to return next Monday to defend our title. Oh dear; I'm not good with Tuesday hangovers... Finally, a bit of trivia - I remember reading somewhere that towards the end of its former life as the Dowanhill Bar, they discovered a hidden room deep in the bowels of the place with its own entrance where some guy had been living for years unbeknownst to the bar staff. I couldn't wait to finish my drink and get my sorry ass out of there before any of the clientele approached me. I am nearly seven feet tall and built like the Hulk's big brother yet I felt uncomfortable in that excrement aperture of a place. In time the occupants may evolve into sub-humans but until then I would say it's best avoided.

About 10 years ago it was my parents local pub, where them and all their friends would meet up for drinks. According to them it used to have a great management team and was a wonderful place to drink. These days, the pub has a very different management team, and subsequently different bar staff. Every time I go in, I'm always served terribly because the staff are always so rude and seem to just not want to work there, I don't understand why they don't just find a job they can be happy doing. I also find that there are a lot of regulars that go, but they're the sort of regulars who give you weird looks if you go in and you're not one of them, they always make me feel uncomfortable for going into what feels like "their pub." I wouldn't suggest going here for a drink to anyone unless its the only place open.

This is a bar frequented by the Green 1/2 of Glasgow. On the walls there is pictures of Jock Stein and Henrik Larsson. On match days I would imagine it will be absolutely packed. The thing that struck me most about the place was how friendly the locals were. Ten of us trooped in having just been soaked by the usual Glaswegian summer weather. None of the regulars batted an eye at our entry and in fact several engaged in a bit of banter and chat with us. The bar is quite small, but the beer is good and the atmosphere seemed quite friendly. It has a warm, vibrant atmosphere, without being too noisy or brash, and the soft drinks (it was the afternoon) are on tap and not flat- as a regular drinker of coke in pubs, I regard this as an important seal of quality. Because it relies on passing trade, the staff are exceptionally friendly, and the prices are fair, given the convenient location. Although this pub doesn't seem to have a theme or a niche market, it's a very pleasant, low maintenance place to park your bum and have a wee dram. With its decent prices, friendly staff and warm atmosphere, it's a haven for people wanting a quiet drink and a sit down away from the thronging pace of the city. It's great to utilise the pub's unusual layout and chill in the mezzanine upstairs. It's one of the few relaxed bars in Glasgow, and sitting up there makes you feel like you're genuinely getting away from it all for a while.
