The place was packed for a Thursday night, and, movie-esque, when PIC and I entered, all eyes were on us. (We WERE wearing flannel, but not locals.) Apparently most were there for a birthday party. However, soon all patrons were welcoming and chatty with us. There was only one bartender/server/busser who was busting his butt doing triple duty. He was friendly and quick (as he could be) to take orders and refills. The curds were terrific! Warmy and gooey, with a panko-crust. Spotted Cow on draft, in throwback commercial pint glasses. Reuben was spot on except needed more meat!! Unfortunately, bartender didn't honor free New Glarus tokens. Wah wah wahhhhh. FYI. Prices were cheap enough though, and I didn't make a fuss. Fun locals, good food, would return!

I strongly suggest any of the burgers, the Reuben when it's 'in season' (starts at St Patrick's day, goes til they're tired of making it), Thursday night nachos, Wednesday s'ghetti. Biscuits and Gravy that can make a Southerner cry (happily)! They don't take cards, but there's an ATM in the corner. Lots of alcohol choices to boot.

Everything about the place is unique and welcoming, from the regulars, to the dog Lucy, and especially Pat the owner and bartender. All made us feel welcome, even if we were first-timer tourists. The atmosphere is exceedingly unique and cool, with many personal touches all around the place. Lots of Blatz beer memorabilia, brand new shuffleboard table, a giant elk, moose antlers, vintage skis, an Elvis clock, cobalt glass bottles, a handmade bar, and lots more eclectic decor. The beer selection was top notch, and even better taps than we found in New Glarus, where everything seems to be New Glarus beer all the time (nothing wrong with that). Really good focus on local and regional brewers, there were taps from Titletown, Common Thread, Hop Garden (Belleville), Lena, Vintage, Central Waters, Summit, and Hinterland. New Glarus Berliner Weisse in the cooler, along with old standbys and unique craft beers. Another plus is that they update the beer list on beermenus. If beer isn't your thing, they also had an impressive selection of over 40 whiskeys. We didn't think they served food here, but lucked out since there was a Saturday special of homemade pork/chicken gumbo, which was served with homemade cornbread and bourbon butter. It was really tasty. The owner used to be a chef and ran a restaurant here prior to opening the Ale House. Our bill for two beers, gumbo and a big pretzel was $16, that's cheap for such high quality. They are only open 3 days a week, and it's just one guy running the show. If you are traveling a distance or bringing a group it would be wise to call ahead. The one-star reviews here reflect more on shortsighted personal entitlement than the establishment, from my experience.

Need a traditional felted Tyrolean hat, they've got you covered. We had a great time wandering around the store and collecting a few items that made us happy. On our exploration, we discovered the well stocked tap room in the back of the store and enjoyed a long Thursday "off season" conversation at the bar with the owner, John. This conversation was only made better with a guided tour of the well decorated bathroom and some serious kitten time with the two rescued shop kittens in residence, Shark and Sardine. The Rusty Raven did not disappoint and should absolutely be a destination on your next trip to New Glarus!

Even better, the place is named the Rusty Raven AND they had an Edgar Allan Poe t-shirt with a raven on it...just not in my size. They had some antiques sprinkled in with a lot of new merchandise (stickers, mugs, coonskin koozies, greeting cards, books, games, magnets, bags, and wallets). They also had some candy including candy cigarettes and cold beverages, plus a side room where some people were hanging out and having some drinks. There was a lot of stuff packed into the little shop, and it's worth a stop.
