My son and I were in town for a couple hours and decided to swing in here for lunch. I like that they have their menu posted outside to view. He thought a half of a sandwich sounded good and the prices were very reasonable. He ordered a few different types of meat in his. The sandwiches are a good size and come with chips and a pickle. I love the vibe of the place. Original murals and bar. High ceilings. You can almost imagine yourself there 100 years earlier. They had a fun story about looking at the ceiling and the dollar bills up there. The waitresses were so kind and helped my son try to toss his dollar bill up there. Crazy this place has 4 stars. They charge 9 dollars for a sandwich you can make with Sara Lee bread, deli ham, and Kraft cheese. I have been there a few times now and the staff is always friendly. There is a cozy atmosphere and great drinks.

This Tavern has a long history in New Glarus and is worth checking out. There is no official kitchen, and so orders can take a while. Luckily for us, our bartender was nice enough to give us a heads up and suggested a few other places for a hot meal. It was the day 12/26. Cold and overcast. After finishing two local beers (including a Spotted Cow), we ventured back out into the cold. This tavern was established in the 1800's. So, expect that kind of vibe. read more

Had to make sure to take my husband to this historic tavern in New Glarus! It was much busier than we expected when we arrived but we found 2 seats at the end of the bar. We first used our chips from the New Glarus brewery to indulge in some Spotted Cow. Not ready for a full meal, we decided to order an appetizer. We noticed that they had unbreaded cheese curds, which is not what your normally see on a menu in Wisconsin! Intrigued, we knew we had to try them and we were pleasantly surprised! The bartenders were very friendly and chatted when there was a minute of downtime and we were entertained by watching a couple patrons try to get their dollars up on the ceiling. I will be honest, this wasn't where I wanted to eat when we visited New Glarus but it was really good! It is a comfortable and friendly place, and they have New Glarus beer on tap! The servers were very friendly and helpful and we enjoyed the visit. There is a lot of history to this place so be sure to read the back of the menu. We had been skiing all day, and we had a major storm just starting, but we enjoyed some soup and ordered a pizza. I had the French Onion, which was not too traditional but still good. The pizza was an Emil's brand they cooked and it tasted fine. The star of the show is the beer. One of the servers told me of the Apple Ale and we picked up some before we left New Glarus; we loved it. Nice tavern with all of its history still on display for your viewing pleasure. They welcome you without reservations which is a big plus after a day of skiing and a two hour drive to get back home. We just needed a place to sit down, rest our legs and warm up with food and drinks. This place did all of that and we are grateful for their kindness and hospitality. Yes, they have New Glarus on tap and also for sale in cans and bottles. They have a food menu and two soups of the day. Not sure where their kitchen is. We tried one of each of their soups. Hubby had the French Onion and said it was ok. I had the chili, made with beans and meat and optional onions, and loved it. Great flavor and very filling. Then we shared a deluxe Emil's WI's own pizza. It was decent but reminded us of a frozen pizza. While waiting for our food I walked around the dining area and took some photos. One of the employees talked with me about the history of the tavern and some of the original fixtures. One of the ceiling fans was installed before electricity was available. They had to hand crank it to make it work. Their ice chest (walk in refrigerator) has two wooden cabinets on top where they used ice tongs to put the ice in to keep it cool. Old world bar, but not a dive bar. More an authentic trip back to when times were simpler. New Glarus Brewery beers abound. The locally sourced brats were a hit. The pulled pork was also great. We were visiting IL from out of town and wanted to take a road trip somewhere to explore the open road. Knowing we already love New Glarus brewery we figured this would be a great stop. While in town we took a chance to grab a beer at a few different local bars and loved Puempel's! This old school bar was first started in the 1800's and has only had THREE owners since. We loved talking to the bartender who was extremely funny and turned this place into a great local stop. We got the $10 drink deal where we got a Pilsner glass to take home and a drink with it. What a great souvenir and an awesome beer! After talking with the locals we even all shared buying each other around. Overall, from being out of town and dropping in Puempel's welcomed us in with history and being able to feel like a local. TL:DR - No frills bar that has a good beer selection and serves delicious tasting food, even if it is microwaved or frozen food. Came to this place based on yelp reviews and after the other two spots I was looking to go were closed due to Coronavirus. I will say the place itself was rather quaint. Super high ceilings on the inside and a few tables made it seem pretty empty. Not sure if that was to help socially distant or just the way it was. This bar is super no frills on any front, but you get what you come in for. The food is made in a tiny corner of the back bar. Most stuff is microwaved with soup hanging out in a warmer and the pizza being put in the oven. The pizza itself is pre-made frozen pizza. But to be honest, if I hadn't seen it, I wouldn't have even given two thoughts about it. The food was delicious either way. We got the pepperoni pizza and the broccoli cheese soup in a bread bowl. The pepperoni pizza was thin crust and delicious with a good amount of cheese on top. Even though I could have also just popped a pizza into my oven at home, this was definitely cooked perfectly with good browning across the pizza with bubbly cheese abound. The broccoli cheddar soup was the surprise of the meal. It easily blows panera bread out of the water. It is a bit thicker and had more cheese flavor than panera. The bread was super soft after being microwaved for a bit, and stayed soft. The combination of super soft bread and cheese was amazing. Outside of that, I got a New Glarus moon man. Tasted fine. The staff was super friendly. A bit slow, but it was literally one lady manning the food station and one guy doing everything else. So it's not like he wasn't busy or not working. Puempel was an interesting tavern filled with rich history and was a unique place to visit and experience along with a variety of beer. However, the quality and quantity of the food left much to be desired along with things being placed on the daily menu which was sold out and replaced with something else. The coleslaw was lacking flavor and the soups were extremely small for the price. We were also served our water in plastic cups while the tables around us were served them in glasses, not to mention that the water tasted pretty foul too. The cheese curds were good and definitely something you should choose if you are hungry. While it was definitely a very culturally rich place, I won't be coming back here anytime soon. read more

The tavern had a traditional tavern look on the inside and was done in an old Swiss style on the outside, which made for a fun atmosphere. We had soup for lunch, and both types were delicious. I really love this place. I grew up spending summers in New Glarus when my Grandmother lived there. We would frequent Puempel's on her way home from getting her mail at the post office next door. Always got a limburger cheese sandwich and tried to count the money stuck to the ceiling (go there to see what I mean). Great atmosphere, great food and outstanding service. Our foursome was in on Tuesday afternoon July 13, and the place was hopping. It is a charming refuge from the summer heat where you can enjoy a cold beer and a great sandwich. The homemade apple slaw was especially good served next to an extra large turkey sandwich. They are certainly not skimping on quality ingredients. There is a tradition of throwing a dollar wrapped around a coin and a tack to the ceiling to try and make it stick. Sometimes, you're just in the mood for a great "olde" tavern. Puempel's boasts being established in 1893, and they have a lovely 1912 bar, tongue in groove ceilings and several old murals painted on the wall. There was a table of what I assume was locals playing cards in the corner. The food menu was simple: sandwiches, soups, cheese, which is fine with me. We ordered a $12 cheese plate which featured local Edelweiss Creamery cheeses. The cheeses were served at warmer than refrigerator temperatures, which allowed the flavors to shine, and they were accompanied by Ritz type crackers. As far as draft beer, they had three New Glarus offerings and one vintage Milwaukee brew, Hamm's, which is what I chose. A vintage brew enjoyed in a laid back old tavern. Ahhhh. read more

Puempel's Olde Tavern is positively friggin' glorious. This is everything I could ever want in a pub. It has everything that suburban eateries, Las Vegas celebrity-owned restaurants and corporate-crafted themed joints cannot deliver: authenticity. On my recent Labor Day weekend visit, I sipped my draught Hamm's beer ($2) while noshing on a Green County cheese sandwich. There's lots of cold cut sammie choices, but when I'm in Green County, Wisconsin, I always opt for a cheese sandwich. I chose a brick on rye adorned with spinach, raw onion and tomatoes. Served with a bag o' chips and a pickle spear, this pack of foodie delight costs only $4.50 and ... STOP!!! Did I just say "noshing"? Did I say "delight"? "Sammie"? "Foodie"?! What the heck is wrong with me?!?! I didn't go to Puempel's for the food. I didn't go to Puempel's for the beer. I WENT TO PUEMPEL'S TO BE AT PUEMPEL'S!! And that's a good enough reason!! It's no surprise that during my visit I'd be seated at the bar next to a Chicagoan. As the oompah band set up--two ladies and two men respectively playing a humstrum, accordion, accordion and banjo--the Chicagoan says to his buddy, "Can you believe how touristy this is?" This is why we can't be friends sometimes, Chicago. You're at Puempel's. They've been doing this continuously since 1893. I've been there on the a midweek day--there's still seniors playing sheepshead in the corner, they're still sipping a light beer or a diet soda, they're still listening to a group at the end of the bar playing two accordions, a banjo and a humstrum. They still get their news from the newspaper curled up and mustard-stained at the end of the bar. They discuss the crypt-o-gram. They think today's was a tough one. Did you ever think that it's only "touristy" because you dragged your butt out of the 'burbs to get a real taste of the midwest? Sorry, Chicagoan, but that question frosted me. Can't you just sit back and enjoy the folks 30 years your senior singing their hearts out? Can't you just appreciate the 100-year old tapestries and murals on the wall? The cash register that still has a 5¢ key? The brass rail? The wood floors? The hundreds, if not thousands, of dollar bills stuck to the ceiling and wonder like everybody else "How do they get those things up there?" Or that fact that your Hamm's cost only two dollars?! If you want touristy, go to Bubba Gump's. If you want authenticity, go to Puempel's. Hopefully you'll see me there. The waitstaff wasn't very friendly and the menu was limited to a handful of easy to prepare sandwiches and pizzas. This is a tavern that earns the "olde" label. Open since 1893 in the same spot (and with only three owners!), Puempel's feels like it should--quaint, lived-in, comfortable and interesting. The walls have giant old paintings of historic Swiss scenes, and the back bar is ancient and beautifully maintained. Service was friendly and helpful. We turned in our tokens for free beers from nearby New Glarus Brewing (which you get with each beer you purchase there) and enjoyed another round in the charming, old place. We also ordered a gourmet cheese plate that was very plentiful and tasty. (It was delivered in a plastic take-home container so we could easily take what we didn't finish.)
