This was our first time here. We're new to the area and was looking for our new go to local place. It happened to be comedy night. Both bartenders were so awesome and drink specials were great. Then the show started and half the bar was filled with young entitled millennials that heckled the comedians the entire time which made the show unenjoyable. A little bit is ok but every comedian had to deal with their crap. They started to become drunk and rude as the night went on. We finally left and bartender asked why. Once we stated the reason the young crowd started to make rude comments. Their were other customers that stated they felt the same. But nothing was ever said to them. They're putting a lot of work in here, and you can really tell. They've finally got a FULL BAR too! Usually a $10 cover, but it goes to the band. Dan's really does support live/local music, and if you're a musician, you'll appreciate them. JC, their sound guy, is the sh-t. He'll make you sound like a pro, even if you're not. The crowd is super friendly, a lot of people have been going there for years. The most amazing thing about Dan's is their KILLER patio. You'd never expect something that rad in the heights. It's HUGE, beautiful, and lots of really social areas, mixed with some darker corners for privacy. Full of hippies, everyone's chill. I came here for Meat Mojo's steak night, and I really enjoyed my experience here! The bar has a chill, relaxed atmosphere, and the staff is really nice. Drinks are reasonably priced. Our server gave me a couple of heavy pours for my wine, so I most certainly appreciated that, haha! The outside patio area is very spacious with plenty of seating, but they have live music inside as well. There's also a fairly big parking lot to park your car, but just be aware that it can get filled up quite fast. I'll definitely be back soon! read more

Who would have thought there was a hole in the wall music venue a few blocks off Main Street deep in the Heights!?!? It is definitely a small exclusive bar that you almost feel special that you get to go! It's very underground and very rough around the edges, but in that "Viper Room" kind of way. I'm thinking you could catch some great up and coming Houston bands here! I got to see two of the best! The Journey Agents and Spain Colored Orange! The beer selection is very decent, but it is just that beer (and wine). But don't fret, grab your own bottle of Jack and they will provide your set-up! They have a patio out back and tables inside! If you are brave, there is plenty of space to get your groove on, or just admire the band up front! Parking can be a little tricky, and as in every neighborhood, careful where you park. read more

I eased into this place on a Sunday afternoon after a suggestion from a friend. It was exactly what I was looking for. A nice dive bar! They have a large "backyard" full of tables, chairs and atmosphere. A perfect place to kick back and enjoy some socializing with new and old friends. Not sure of the schedule but they have farm and culture market in the back yard as well. This place has a full bar with a reasonable selection of whiskies, wine and local beer. My girlfriend ordered a bloody Mary, made to order. I decided to give it a try after finishing my first beer. I almost needed a fork to eat the veggies on top which I liked. I previously mentioned made to order. Well, I requested one more drop of Tobasco in mine and it came out perfect. Kudos to the bar tender!! They did not skimp on the vodka or the time to prepare it. The inside which I did not spend much time in has a lot of old nostalgic photos on the wall, a pool table, a band stage, the full bar. I am not sure of the live music schedule but they do have it on a regular bases. The top it all off, the restrooms are extremely clean. OK OK, I only visited the mens room but my GF said the same thing about the ladies room. I hear that they cook steaks on Thursday evenings. Great chill spot in the Heights! Really divey. Friendly staff, lots of seating and parking, a very cool backyard patio, and great beer selection! There's a nice little pool table and an old fashioned jute box(I love those things). Saw The Damned Truth there in February and it was awesome. Their Thursday Steak Night and Blues Jam is AWESOME!!! The music inside is out of this world- the sax player blows he brass off that horn of his! And the food is phenomenal! It's not just steak but a wide array of carnivorous goodness: Ribeyes, Strips, Lamb Chops, Pork Chops, and more. I know, lamb in a bar? But seriously, try it and you'll be back the next Thursday for more... with your friends. Only downside is they only accept cash for the food but there's an ATM in the bar for a small fee. They have a cool little farmers market the 2nd Sunday of the month where you can drink some of the best Bloody Marys in town while shopping for fresh produce, art, jewelry, piglets, or CBD salve. Located on the Northern end of the Heights--the sketchy end--Dan Electro's is one of those places where upon entering, you're in for a pleasant surprise. I'll be honest, I wasn't going to Dan Electro's to go to Dan Electro's. I went to Dan Electro's to hear the band American Swindle. My wife recently shot some band promo pics for the band, so they invited us to Dan Electro's to see them. Upon waking into the bar, you're greeted by a kindly woman who promptly asks you for the $10 cover. The cover is worth it, as the space itself is pretty sweet. To the left of the entrance is the bar area, where you can order beer/wine (no liquor) or some food from the grill. As a bonus, the grill stays open until 1:00 am. Before I talk more about the venue itself, I want to speak about the bar. I was shocked and pleasantly surprised at the beer selection. Everything is bottle/canned, but there is an abundance of good beer. In fact, I was happier than a tick on a fat dog at their beer selection. There were offerings from Southern Star and St. Arnold, as well as $3.50 guinness and Foster's, and a number of foreign imports (why look at the foreign imports when you have Southern Star and St. Arnold). Anyway, I quickly ordered a St. Arnold Weedwacker for myself, and a Pinebelt Pale Ale for the wife. These beers are so good that the bartender complimented my taste in beers. The venue itself is intimate, with tables beginning only a few short feet away from the stage. The downside is that the speakers are right on top of you, so bring some ear plugs if you have sensitive ears. Don't let that scare you away, though. This place is rockin. The night we were there, the Steve Straker band opened for American Swindle. Both bands were good, but from a talent perspective, Swindle was on another level. Downside of the night: I ordered a burger and I think they forgot to do it because after 30 minutes, I went back to ask about it, and then it came out another 45 minutes later. Oops. Pro tip I didn't take advantage of: Check out the patio behind the bar, it looks pretty sweet. Good place for a smoke break. Consensus: Check this place out, I'm a fan. read more

Played here twice on two recent tours. Absolutely love this place. The inside is adorable, the outdoor patio is beautiful, the sound is amazing, the staff are some of the nicest people you will *ever* meet. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it for a touring band without a local draw (like us)--while they treat you quite well, there's not much foot traffic. If you can handle a slow night, though, definitely give it a shot. It's worth it just to hang out with Syd and JC. However, if you're thinking about coming here to SEE a show--DO IT. JC has his board on lock; the mix is always incredible. I can imagine sightlines are pretty stellar even when this place is packed. Relax with your drink on the back patio while bands are changing sets. I can't wait to find a reason to come back. Oh, did I mention that it's a beer & wine bar with BYOBooze and suggested donation mixers? I know this is a regular thing in Texas, but holy shit, this Chicago-born, Wisconsin-living girl is always tickled by that concept. read more

Dan Electro's Guitar Bar is an appropriate name for this place, since Danelectro is a guitar company. It's kind of like naming your bar Al Embic's. But regardless, it's a great venue to catch live music in Houston. It's a bit out of the way on the northside, in the Heights, but it's worth the trek. The parking lot is on the small side, but you should be able to find a spot on the street. Pay your cover at the front and grab a table in front of the stage. The space is basically just an open-seating concert hall, with a number of tables scattered about, and a few bar-height tables and stools towards the back. We usually stop by to hear our buddy's band, LL Cooper, but Dan Electro's has a steady lineup of talented local musicians. The bar is beer and wine only, but they have plenty of drink specials that should keep everyone happy, and makes the cover worthwhile. Plus, when you need to smoke or just get your hearing back for a bit, the large back patio is fenderstratocastic. And last time, they had even cleared it out a bit and landscaped since my previous visit, which really opened it up into a veritable biergarten. This review is for Thursday steak night only. I'm new to Houston, settled in the West University area, and have been enjoying checking out the wide variety of places this town has to offer. I drove up to Dan Electros after reading the high reviews on houstonsteaknight.com, but was not clear that this was a dive bar and plastic plates. So my mistake there. That is what it is, but i'd just rather not pay $25 (not including beverage, $7 higher than on that site, fyi) to eat a steak on a plastic plate outside on a funky picnic table. Yes, i could have eaten inside, but it is a sticky dive bar that doesn't go at all with having a meal. Outside felt cleaner. (:o) That said, the steak (made and run by a "third party") had an excellent crust, and though it was more rare than i wanted (suggest medium+), it was good. Didn't register much of the ninja or other special sauce mentioned, but i don't eat steak often and it was fine without it. The jalapeño mashed potatoes were quite tasty as well. So for a dive bar and music venue Dan Electro's seemed like a good time (didn't stay late and wasn't drinkin on a weeknight). But for a steak meal it's a bit pricey and funky for me. So a solid 3 stars (A-OK), which is not a negative review. read more
