If you are a total beginner, seasoned pro or anything in between, I highly recommend checking out Dance/10. I've been searching for the right studio in the Bay Area for years. In another lifetime I was a professional ballet dancer. I am not in great shape now, but I am still serious about learning. I thought my days of regularly taking class were over until I found Dance/10. I had stopped taking class because I grew tired of these scenarios at other places: A. Super competitive classes where people have a fit and elbow you if you stand in "their spot", etc. B. "Adult" classes made up of 13 year olds wondering what you are doing there. C. Classes meant more for socializing rather than dancing. D. Classes that were strictly limited to modern or ballet. I've found the adult classes at Dance/10 to be welcoming, diverse and focused on helping each student become a better dancer and performer -wherever they may be in their process. There is a perfect balance between serious work and levity. Pamm Drake (owner and instructor) is the triple threat of dance educators: professional career on Broadway, an excellent teacher who takes pedagogy seriously, and a genuinely nice person who clearly delights in her students' progress. Her tap classes are fun and progressive - she is great at reading the room and helping individuals without breaking the flow of class. Very prejudice put all black dancers in back so they can't be seen even though they're smaller and should be up front and I seen this with all your groups. Black money should be equal very disappointed. read more

The location of this studio is unfortunate. Parking is scarce, and it's close to an area of higher crime. (Not saying much, considering Alameda is a place where nothing EVER happens. EVER.) One you set foot inside, no doubt it's a dance studio. The scent of sweat, bodies, dance shoes hits you full force. There are two studios, one large one down stairs, very nice, very good mirrors. For those vain people, like me, who cannot take their eyes off themselves while shaking their booties. The upstairs studio is pretty small, tends to get stuffy as there is not good ventilation. Dance 10 offers a variety of classes, and the owner, Pamm Drake, is a character my family has known for many many many years. Unfortunately, there are throngs of tweens and teens who consider themselves much better dancers than they really are and will most likely give you snotty sideways looks if you can actually dance. read more

Pamm and the Dance 10 team are amazing. My husband and I were introduced to Pamm by our wedding planner and over the course of 6 months took private lessons to get us ready for our first dance. Not only did we look great on the big day but we had fun in the process. Pamm is a true delight and so easy to learn from. She helped us create a routine for our song and gave pointers for our DJ regarding timing and tempo. And we are looking forward to going back to Dance 10 for ballroom classes! read more

Dance 10 is a place for all levels of dancing. I really had no intention for dancing, but my wife and daughter were into it, so I kind of got drug in reluctantly. But I'm really glad that I did ... What I enjoy most about Dance 10 is that it's everybody's dance studio. You will find 8 year olds mixing it up with 80 year olds. Semi-professional dancers with a guy with a left foot like me. It's serious dancing, but not so serious that it's no fun. There are people of all shapes and abilities, my daughter is disabled and they even figure out how to get her into the mix. There are (non-mandatory) shows several times a year at the Kaufman-- which are actually fun. The teachers are great, we have so much fun on a Thursday night class that when some new people showed up I jokingly asked them, "What you think we are hear to dance?" Last part, The Dancing Christmas Trees. Seriously, we got into this because my wife wanted to be a Dancing Christmas Tree. They have since traveled to Macy's to be in the Thanksgiving parade. HAPPY NATIONAL DANCE WEEK!!! Betty B and I came here on a Tuesday night for Broadway Jazz. We damn near had a whole tour of Alameda trying to find it but we finally did. Then, we had another tour of residential Alameda trying to find parking. Its okay, it was some what scenic. The "main" entrance is misleading as it isn't the entrance. You go in through the side door kinda like how the cool dancers do during shows =) Now that felt legit alone. Upon entrance the instructors' professional shots are posted on the wall. There's two studios, A on the first level and B on the 2nd. Our class was held in in A. The floor to be brutally honest, was not clean. I would say that most classes here use shoes of some sort. It is not your barefoot kind of studio. Betty B was smart and brought her cool ballet flats. Since switching to polynesian dance, I haven't used those things in ages. Being the germaphobe I am, I used my hoodie for the floor section of the class and was thinking about how dirty my feet were half the time. Nonetheless, the instructor was really good with the full range of age and abilities the students brought. The stretching warm-up was awesome and she was very good at breaking down across the floor sequence to people who couldn't catch up. Now the center routine was just the cutest thing EVER. I have forgotten how silly, diva and empowering Broadway dance can be! I loved every bit of it. It was clean, simple but totally fun and open for creativity. Before I knew it, the hour had passed. Betty B and I looked at each other with the same "BOO!!!" face and sadly drove home. Would I come back? Hell yeah. They have many other classes. My next class might be the Turn & Jumps class. How did they know that turns and jumps were my weakness? It's like they just knew! An entire class to work on that would be awesome! Now I just have to find time in my schedule to do this. I understand why some might say that the location of D10 is unfortunate, however I beg the question, "where in Alameda should it be"? Anyways, I have danced for about 14 years, and I must say I have found a second home here. Ryan, Pamm, and just about everyone else I have met there have been both welcoming, and accommodating. They have gone above and beyond to make sure I feel comfortable here. On a much more somber note, when my brother passed in January 2010, Pamm and Ryan were there to offer a support I needed. It was both unexpected as well as heart warming. I will never forget these two! And lastly, the music is fun, the dancers are great, and the teachers are above and beyond some of the best I have had! The location of this studio is awesome! I live 5 blocks away and our 4 yr old boy attended dance here with his pre-school, he absolutely loved it. Alameda is a great location and this particular spot is a typical Alameda neighborhood. Yes most neighborhoods have parking problems, but oh my goodness, walk half a block? Not a problem. The teachers are patient, the classes welcoming and the programs diverse. This studio is one of the gems that make living in Alameda so pleasant and convenient. read more

I take Zumba classes with Denise Lum. The class is easy to follow and is not too crowded, so you don't have to worry about bumping into people during workout. Denise is very friendly and inspiring. Highly recommended. read more

I really like this dance center, and I'm pretty picky when it comes to dance classes. They teach the typical ballet classes, but they also teach the Broadway style of jazz and tap. For some reason, it seems hard to find tap classes in the Bay Area that aren't rhythm tap. The teachers are very helpful and patient. Christina Lazo's Broadway Jazz class is great!! read more

I have been attending this studio for a few years now. As an adult without professional dance background, I find the studio to be very welcoming, with type of classes that accomodate different levels of experience. I have had a chance to work with many of the dance instructors at the studio, including studio owner, Pam, and I find them all very professional, encouraging, demonstrative. You get the undisputable benefits of dancing (physical and mental fitness), as well as having stretch goals to building upon one's dance skills. Overall, very positive atmosphere, an environment for young people to develop positive self image, flourish their talents, and similarly for the adults to build fitness, strength, balance, skills. The power barre class I have been doing for a few years now has definitely helped w/ my flexibility, balance. For me, after a pretty stressful day at work, this is an excellent way to sweat off the stress. Parking can be a challenge on some nights, but generally a spot is available close enough. read more

BEST ADULT JAZZ CLASS IN THE BAY! I have studied, taught and performed dance for many years but my favorite class now is Jazz2 on Wed night at Dance/10 with our fabulous teacher, Ryan! I wanted to review this studio because I think it is a great place to come if you have a boy who wants to dance. My seven year-old takes hip-hop and acrobatics here and really loves it. He is one high energy PITA boy and they deal with him with remarkable aplomb. They have a "boys club" hip-hop class full of energetic boys and the teacher still manages to teach them to dance. As an adult who danced for over a decade as a kid, I found the atmosphere to be fun and non-intimidating. Pam is a great tap dance teacher, however, I found myself not challenged very much by her class. The only reason I think this was an issue is because I hadn't danced for 5 years and was unsure what class level to enroll in. The downside was that only when I decided to discontinue the class due to a hectic work schedule did she offer me a more advanced level class. This is evidence of a lack of personal attention in classes that are very much overcrowded. Overall, however, I enjoyed the tap class and plan to return to the dance studio this fall. read more
