Leslie moves like Aaliyah sings. Gifted communicator, killer stage presence, and even from the back row I'm envious of her skincare routine. Everything she comes up with feels "right" in the body, even if mine has never moved in this way before. Super fun and a great brain workout; if I keep going every Tues night for the Int/Adv in perpetuity, I don't think I'll ever inherit dementia. Worth noting that as I arrived, I saw students leaving the Beg/Int class prior, come pouring out the door with huge smiles and breathless chatter. Kate's class was on point! It was my first class so the intro was $14 instead of $16. I loved how we were moving for practically most of it. She had us start off with a warm up before teaching us the 3 8-count choreo. I was happy she was super friendly about repeating moves and slowly too. I just wish there was a bit more space. It felt a bit crammed in there, considering there were maybe 20 people in a medium sized room. I also found the tempo to be quick. She taught it slow but the song was super fast (Ja Rule's Clap Back). I def need to practice. I still had fun though (: I wanna come back! read more

That is what I came across on my first class. Accessing the schedule via online, easy class payment and doable pricing at that. I came for the Kpop class with Kyle Soriano. Dang, it was a full class. All age levels and dance experience levels. They have a cubby area for your belongings. Check in the office in the back before class. I loved how he broke the movements for the beginners like me. He gave the class great energy. It was the vibe throughout!!! The Kpop group was 7-8 and it went by so fast! Come early enough so you can find parking, it's all street parking. If you have always wanted to dance but were too afraid to or scared of looking silly or not being good at it, please come to in the Groove and try it out. I started coming to class as a total beginner, never had taken a dance class in my life. The teachers here have such an incredible wealth of knowledge to share and they create a welcoming and fun environment to learn how to move your body. All of the other students who go there are also so sweet and range from kids to doctors and teachers to grandmas and dads!!! No matter what age or skill level you are, you are welcome there. You can learn foundations from the beginner/intermediate classes and they have classes for advanced dancers too, with an impressive rotating block of world famous choreographers from the bay and from around the world! This studio has the most affordable classes probably in the whole bay and really has been a second home to me. Learning how to dance there has been single-handedly one of the most fulfilling things I could've started doing as an adult because of all of the friends And community I've built there, but more importantly, how it made me feel and the confidence it gave me, in and outside the studio. Some tips from me: 1. The most affordable option is to get the 10-class pass which is truly the best deal. Trust me, you'll use all 10 classes in no time. 2. if you have a question about the studio or any classes, the best way to reach them is 100% Instagram DM. 3. To check in, go through the studio and visit the office that I'll be on the left side once you enter through the second door and someone will check u in!!! 4. You should 100% say hi to someone and meet someone new every time that you go. Everyone is so nice and wants you to have a good time and it's nice to dance next to someone u met and see them again next time!! So if you're a beginner, you should definitely stop by for class and keep an open mind that it's OK to not get things the first time! My first time here. I'm not gonna lie I was SCARED lol I DM'd Sondi and inquired if she had beginner classes available. Sondi said her class is a beginner class and everyone is learning. GREAT NEWS Class is only 8$ and one hour long I got there early found parking easily (street parking only and it's a Saturday so you still have to pay the meter) Sondi is a great instructor she communicates the instructions very well and makes it easy to learn and follow her. There is NO JUDGMENT. Other people in the class were easy going no drama no egos. It was everyone's first time there. Took a class here last week and had such a blast! I took a beginner's Hip Hop class. You really just get thrown into it, so if you've never taken a dance lesson before it may seem very intimidating and confusing! But no one there looks down upon you; it's a pretty encouraging environment. It's a pretty small space though so it was fairly crowded. But I think that just speaks to how well the lessons are led and the moves that you learn! read more

Recently took a hip hop class at In the Groove for a friend's birthday and loved the experience! I'm very much a beginner level dancer, but our instructor was great and made learning the moves doable. I was hesitant due to my awkwardness, but felt so welcomed. He broke down each dance move and made it easy to sequence the moves together. We also did the dance moves with and without music (P Lo's Put Me On Somethin'!) which was helpful. Would definitely recommend their birthday party packages which includes your choice of song. It's such a different and fun experience for a group of friends. First time here, amazing experience! It was a little present that I can give to my cousin since she loves to dance and her birthday is near! Daniel, who is the instructor or the teacher or manager whatever is super nice and friendly! He's definitely very caring too, especially about kids! I really appreciated his kindness towards us on our very first day; makes me feel so welcomed and warmed and definitely come back again! Even though my cousin was expecting to learn hip-hop with her best friend today, but instead they learned popping which was a bit difficult for them! I was watching them trying to learn the moves such as wave, tut moves and popping their body, it was really difficult for them! Overall, they told me they had a very fun time! I am sooooo glad I found this awesome dance studio! I have been trying hard to be more active and get back in shape, and was looking for a class near where I work that I could do in addition to my gym workouts. I am a beginner, and hadn't taken a dance class in 10 years so I was a little nervous that I'd look silly and not be able to keep up! Well I was wrong, the beginning hip hop class is so fun and very easy to follow along with! And even if I don't do each step perfectly, no one judges and we all just have fun with it! My friend rented a studio from this place. We couldn't get to our studio without walking through the main studio (which had a large class going on and it went over by about 5-10 minutes), so we started late. The whole place was very loud and stuffy. There was a line for the bathroom. It wasn't very clean. When we left, we ran into the same issue - trying to get to the main door but having to cut through a class full of people. The class yelled at us as we were exiting. Overall, pretty bad experience and would rather just practice at a gym or in a park. One of the staff members got kind of aggressive too, so yeah, we wouldn't go back. read more

I took Zumba with Melody two days ago and am still incredibly sore, yet for some reason I am drawn to returning tonight for some more pain. Melody, played some great zumba beats, better than most classes I have been to and even incorporated a little hip hop, which I never knew I could zumba to and rather enjoyed. She killed it on the squats over and over again but mixed the routines up so you didn't feel like you were over working the same areas. The class was pretty easy to follow and was diverse with people all ages and ethnicities. Maybe it was an off day but Melody didn't seem very approachable or welcoming in the beginning of class and I also noticed she didn't talk that much during the class, just random screams and hollas. I'm not letting that discourage me though cause class was bomb and maybe that will change the more I go :) Another annoying thing was that Melody had to keep stopping class to tell people to walk to the back of the studio to register or to get to the other class, which was going on as the same time as our class. Of course, the only way to get to that class is by walking through ours. Great studio, a little on the small size but perfect for the class size, which was small (maybe 10 people). There is a huge mirror on one of the walls, which made it so much easier to follow what the instructor was doing. Very public transit accessible, just wish the class started at 6 so I didn't have to pay for parking. P.s neighborhood is a little sketch, park on a main street read more

Awesome dance studio - I discovered In the Groove when I tried to search for Momo, who used to teach at the RSF gym at UC Berkeley. Momo is the best - you can tell he really loves teaching hip hop as he pours his soul into every choreo he teaches. The Bodywerk class he teaches is my favorite, since he always plays current hip hop music with good beats. It's always an awesome workout too! I've also gone to Daniel's class for beginning hip hop, which is great too! My only complaint about the studio is that it can get a bit stuffy/hot, and it is small so you have to go a bit early to get a good spot. It might be time to invest in some fans or AC. It's a 5 minute walk from 14th street Bart, so you have no excuse to not pay In the Groove a visit soon :) read more

This is my first time taking a dancehall class. Beforehand I was super nervous but everyone in the class was very nice and welcoming. I arrived a little early thinking I could just walk in and pay but another class was going on so I waiting out front until the owner (I'm assuming) let us in his name was Daniel. Paying was super easy and hey accept cards. The bathrooms are conveniently located in the back of the down stairs studio and they are gender friendly. The only thing that sucked is I didn't bring water (I know lol) and the studio has water but does not supply cups. Total bummer. As far as the dance class itself I loved it!!! The teacher was very entergetic and took her time. She explained the dance hall moves and their names. I would definitely recommend this class to any and everyone who is a beginner at dancehall or any type of dance . read more

Everytime I've come here since my first, I've had nothing less then excellent experiences. The other studio on grand I highly recommend. Parking is free usually after 6 on certain days and it's a much friendlier neighborhood viewing lake merrit. Again, studio was clean, staff have top quality choreography, and great music. I want to give 5 stars, but there are some basic things that are very frustrating. They don't post when there are subs, and they don't answer the phones! The guy working at the front desk actually said, we can't update the schedule every time there's a sub. In my thinking, the classes and the teachers are the main thing that's happening. Is it too much trouble to let the people who want to take the classes know who will be teaching? I do like dancing here, but I've stopped going because the schedule is unreliable. read more

Thought it would be a good place to start my little on at, but apparently they aren't that organized. After purchasing a class card online for the weekly Saturday class, we showed up and sat in the front of the studios while another class was going on. Once that finished, a woman walked up to us and asked us if we were there for the kids hip-hop class. She then told us that the instructor hadn't shown up. WTF? Certainly not the way I'd run a studio. Since I am a professional dancer, I have a huge problem with this place. I called to get a refund after the fact and the person who answered wasn't willing to even budge even though I haven't even used it once. I wouldn't go back if you paid me. My COMPANY has been a CLIENT OF IN THE GROOVE STUDIOUS SINCE NOVEMBER 2014. Every month, without fail, they either had no one there to open the door for the class time I'd paid for or they'd double booked the space (AFTER I PREPAID) in order to cash in on more money. In their absences I was forced to relocate my class to my in-home studio or to one of their smaller, very inadequate spaces (ceilings were too short for my taller dancers!) and In The Groove DID NOT GIVE A REFUND FOR THE DIFFERENCE IN RATES, EVEN WHEN THEY FAILED TO OPEN THE DOORS, or the inconvenience to my students or my business reputation. July 2015 I moved my class to Saturdays 2pm-3pm with the understanding that In the Groove Studios would honor this new pre-paid time slot. August and September they bumped my class 50% of the time TO TAKE MORE MONEY, WHICH THEY ADMITTED TO ME IN AN EMAIL. That is UNFAIR! I paid the rate that was advertised. I posted that information on my marketing material. It is NOT supposed to be a BIDDING WAR. Today, just 2-months into the agreement, was the last straw. A CO-OWNER, LISA, INTERRUPTED MY CLASS 15-MINUTES IN to force our class to move to the smaller, non-ventilated space even though I PAID FOR THE SPACE MY CLASS WAS IN! This made me look unprofessional, as if I'd attempted to usurp a space! I asked CO-OWNER LISA to give me a few minutes to bring the class to rest and I'd come speak with her in her office. Instead of being professional she was rude, condescending and told me if I didn't like it then In The Groove Studios is not the place for me and I could walk my class out and leave immediately. Even my students spoke to her about how unprofessional she was treating our class. She then feigned ignorance, "Oh, I didn't know. I was just told you guys are upstairs today." HELLO!!! I PAY FOR A SPECIFIC SPACE! THAT SPACE IS NOT UPSTAIRS WITH NO A.C. AND TOO CRAMPED TO FIT 12+! DO NOT HITCH YOUR BUSINESS IMAGE TO IN THE GROOVE STUDIOS, THEY WILL UNAPOLOGETICALLY MAKE YOUR DANCE COMPANY LOOK UNPROFESSIONAL WHEN THEY ARE THE UNPROFESSIONAL ONES. I started taking dance classes here about a month ago and it's been a really fun and challenging experience so far. I've taken No Boys Zone with Lynz on Wednesdays at 7, Sexy Hip Hop with Cera on Fridays at 6:30, beginner hip hop on Mondays with Daniel at 6:30 and Open Level Hip Hop on Thursdays with Samara and Jenay at 6:30. I have taken two advanced classes (that I really didn't belong in since I'm not an advanced dancer but the instructors and people in the class are so friendly that I didn't feel too out of place). All of the instructors are great dancers and I think they all dance and perform with dance crews. Every choreographer goes at a good pace and you can tell they all love to dance, and have been for a long time. I love that they incorporate moves from the choreography in the warm ups. The other attendees are very nice and helpful too. Lynz's class was the first class I took and her choreography is challenging and fun. She was the hook that got me in! I can always count on being introduced to my new favorite song of the week when I take her class. She's very nice and is a super talented dancer and choreographer! Cera's Sexy Hip Hop class is so much fun! I love watching her dance! I happened to walk into a rehearsal she was having with her dance company and I loved the song and choreography and wanted to take her class. Her class is a newer class so there are not as many people (I kind of like smaller groups because you get more attention). I like that she uses dancehall moves in her choreography. You can definitely learn some sexy ish when you go to this class! Daniel is the owner and is very nice and talented. I like his choreography a lot. The beginner class is awesome for beginners and challenging too for any level dancer. He teaches other classes too and doesn't go too fast with the choreography. He and Lynz teach a training class on Sundays for people who want to become professional dancers. I took Jenay and Samaras class once and will go back when my schedule permits. The particular night I went Jenay taught the class since there were only two people and Samara wasn't feeling well. Normally that class is really full. What I liked about this experience is I felt like Jenay gave it her all even though there were only 2 people in the class. She's a really good dancer and choreographer also. Advanced hip hop is taught by many different instructors but out of the two I attended my favorite was Joey Dominguez. His class was really challenging and I liked that he talked about his intention and inspiration for the piece before he started teaching. I could tell that he dances from his soul and it's awesome to watch. Overall this place is a great place with great music, choreography, and people! read more

I went to the ladies only class a few weeks ago. I was definitely nervous as I haven't danced in a while but the instructor was very nice. They picked up where they had left off on choreo from last week but there wasn't any review so I wasn't lost as a new-comer, all fresh stuff. I had to ask people taking the class where to pay and what to do before-hand so that's why I marked stars-off. If I hadn't already bought the online 10-class pass I might have left. There was no announcement as to what class was starting or any signs to point to the back office where you go to pay. Time for an update! I've been going to this studio for ~3 years. This is my home studio and where my dance journey started. If you're a total beginner, I highly recommend Daniel's beginning classes. His warm up is a REALLY GOOD foundation for a lot of the footwork in hip hop, and he is very good breaking down the choreo into very simple moves. There are not many teachers who are really good who can teach total beginners, and Daniel is the one to go to. Leslie is also great, but as a beginner I found her moves a bit hard to understand as it was a bit more "fluid".... hmm hard to explain. But once you get a little comfortable, her class is a blast. If you want femininity, sass, and fire, take Chelsea's class. Her choreo is really fun and usually fast. It's not for a total beginner though. I also can't wait to try new instructors-- I tried wynona's new class for the first time and loved it. She's AMAZING. Also, I've seen George sub for another class before and he's really good as well. I can't wait to try his class one day. If you want to challenge yourself, take master classes on Tuesday nights - they usually announce weekly on Instagram/Facebook. Yeeeeeew! That was my self esteem shooting through the third floor apartment this morning! Although this was not a New Year resolution, Hip Hop dance has been on my radar for a loooong time coming. I have danced since I was two and always enjoyed it, however I haven't been a participant in an actual class since I was 18. So it's been a while and I'm rusty and a little out of shape and I looked a little Gumby-ish when I danced last. Guess what?! Nobody cared, everyone is much more concerned with their performance than worrying about what you do or don't do. The class I took was: No boys allowed, Ladies only Hip Hop. It was open level. Open level just means all levels welcome from beginner to advanced and everything in between. I found it challenging, but definitely not something completely out of my league. When class was through (time flew) I found myself in disbelief that it had really been an hr! I noticed some girls rolling into other classes. For instance I showed up as the 6 o'clock class was ending and noticed the girls stayed for my 7 o'clock class then even after for the 9 o'clock class! Deaaaamnnn, I can tell I am going to be hooked! I can't remember the instructors name, but she was awesome. She took time to go over moves she could tell we- or I, were struggling on. She answered all questions concisely and really adjusted well to everyone and their specific needs. It was amazing. Her choreography was a so sick too. She only teaches the Wednesday 7pm class and I'm sad to say I usually work Wednesday so it will be difficult to return. I'm already signed up for other beginner hip hop and hoping all of the instructors are just as amazing as her! Can't wait for the next class! read more

What constantly impresses me here is the quality of dance classes they offer here. The masterclasses/ special events that are held periodically feature amazing choreographers/ instructors from all across California. You would be hard pressed to find anything else like it in the area. In addition, I've realized that it's really hard to find a class where you are not the only adult in a sea of 12-year-olds. What Daniel and Leslie have created here is a space where an adult dancer can walk in off the street and be challenged in a room of your peers - a rarity in the Bay Area. At the same time, those with no dance experience will feel equally at home. The beginning hip hop classes are fresh and energetic, and the Zumba class is one of the most popular in the area. Both Daniel and Leslie are so easygoing and accommodating. I would recommend this studio to everyone I know. My only lament is that they do not have a studio in the South Bay. p.s. Parking could be an issue; try to BART it in. If it's after 6, I like parking a little south of 14th, on Jefferson...feels relatively safer. read more

Such a fun time! I took a group of 15 beginners here for a team offsite to learn Kpop. Daniel Kang accommodated our one-off event and even studied up on a specific choreography that our group wanted to learn. During the planning process, Daniel was super responsive and gave me a lot of confidence in the studio. We came for a 3-hour session and Daniel was really patient and accommodating to our group. By the end we had an impressive routine that we all were proud of. The group said it was one of the best offsites they've ever had. THANKS! Tonight has been my third time taking a dance class at The Groove Studios in DT Oak & so far my experience has been nothing but a good challenge & tons of fun. I haven't taken a dance class since I was in HS, about 6 yrs now, so I felt the need to start doing again what I love most. The dance instructor for the Wednesday nights - No Boys Allowed Class - is super talented, sweet and helpful. I wish I could take more classes through out the week, but given my busy schedule this is what I can do for now. I will definitely try to catch a sat or sun class from time to time. ALL HIP HOP dance studio! They just opened a couple weeks ago and the new space looks great! There's a large studio downstairs where classes are held and a smaller studio upstairs. Behind the large studio there's a lounge area with a nice tv and comfy couches, wifi, and 2 bathrooms. They have a great lineup of teachers that are well known around the Bay (and in the dance world). There are different levels and styles of hip hop including contemporary, popping, voguing, and youth classes. And they've already held two very successful all day workshops with guest choreographers from L.A. For those of you that live in the city and don't want to deal with Bay Bridge traffic, the studio is only one block from the Bart station. If you do drive, street parking is pretty easy to find and it's located in a safer part of Oakland. Classes are open to everyone and are only $12. Get ready to get your Groove on! read more

I will admit that I am bias and will be going on and on why i love this place so much because I ama bigggggg fan of Groove Against the Machine! That's right, this place is owned by Groove Against the Machine directors and I freakin love all of them. They are genuinely nice people and they will help those who have passion for dance. This place is clean and nicely organized. Inside the waiting area they have two large couches and you naturally make new friends everytine you come in because of its set up. Everyone SHOULD try taking their classes. They offer wide variety of different types of dances and all their instructors are AMAZING. I mostly take beginner, intermediate hip hop classes and I look forward to going to dance class every week after long days of work. I also know that they offer different programs for young kids. If parents are reading reviews to decide whether they should take their kids here or not, please don't hesitate and just take them. They will fall in love with dancing and being active :) This is my FAVORITE studio out of all studios I've been to in SF, San Jose, Peninsula and Oakland area.
