I'd especially like to give a shout out to the wonderful massage program at the HBC spa. Nonmembers, when booked for a massage, can also have access to use the locker room, women's private indoor hot tub, steam sauna, dry sauna, as well as the private women's sun deck after the massage. Rude staff that are clueless and never able to answer any questions. Their private swim lessons are taught by amateur high school graduates who dont have any teaching techniques. Thats $50 for half an hour. I would not pay for the membership here. There just arent better options nearby. Response to manager's comment: I have called and also asked the front desk various questions in the past and all seemed to have limited knowledge about the club / undertrained. However the main problem is they are also very unfriendly. Exception: The new gentleman who handles new member inquiries was very friendly and professional. To be fair. Regarding swimming "private lessons", at $100 / hour rate, please hire someone who is a professional or at least have some training at teaching swimming effectively. Harbor Bay Club is not low priced, but it is worth every penny. It looks like a country club. It has a huge outdoor pool with 6 lap lanes, tennis courts and pickle ball courts. There is an outdoor hot tub. In the women and in the men's locker rooms there is another hot tub, sauna and steam bath. The locker room is constantly being cleaned, by the hard working staff. There are hair dryers and plastic bags to put your cosmetics in. I use the elliptical machine every time. The room with elliptical machines, stair climbing machine and tread mills looks out over a grassy field , the pool and then the estuary. The club was open during the pandemic because the club designed a way to have air circulating throughout. There are tropical plants inside the club. I like to do Pilates and yoga and there are always rooms available. There are many classes here, Pilates, reformer, yoga etc. There are a lot of rules for this club, which I find refreshing. You will not see anyone filming themselves for TikTok here. That is not allowed. The people are friendly and extremely polite and considerate. The young people at the front desk are always helpful and friendly. It is a very positive Alameda vibe. read more

I've been a member several months and enjoy the gym as a place for a relaxed workout and its general community feel. The sauna and steam room are no frills but a nice way to unwind after a workout. The highlight for me is the tennis program at the club...I have gone to beginner classes with Bethany for over a month. They have been a great way to get back in shape, and Bethany makes the tennis court a welcoming and approachable place for players of all skill levels. It is really inspiring to see folks in the class who have never played tennis before learning strokes and gaining confidence through Bethany's coaching. Facilities are basic but clean. Most classes are during working hours so not able to take advantage. The highlight for me is the tennis program. Have been taking lessons with Bethany for a few months and it's been a lot of fun. She makes tennis very approachable. Lots of different games and drills to keep one engaged. Can't say enough good things about HBC! I've been a member for over 10 years. They have everything you need for a healthy lifestyle. I particularly love the heated pool, exercise classes like yoga, zumba, spin, and stretch. They have plenty of weights if you're serious about weight lifting. They also have tennis, pickle ball, and pilates and reformer private classes. They have a spa to get facials, nail services and excellent massages. My favorite is the hot stone massage. Perfect for all ages but it's mostly a family country club lifestyle. People become family here. They also have a hot tub after a dip in the pool. Oh I forgot about the basketball courts that are well lit. You can also get a locker for an additional cost as a member. Some people say it's pricey and their locker rooms need to be remodeled but everything works perfectly. They have plenty of towels so you don't have to bring yours. The private locker rooms have a jacuzzi, steam room and sauna. Their machines are new and work well. Lastly, they have free parking and plenty of spaces. i love this gym! I've been a member of the Y and equinox and this is the best one! I enjoy the sauna/ steam room area almost after every exercise. The membership perks with the spa for massages and facials is a huge plus. It's an excellent place for both fitness and leisure. We like hanging out and reading by the pool or on the grassy areas when the weathers nice, or just going to use the outdoor jacuzzi. We're not huge into tennis, but it's cool that we can play here and even invite some friends whenever we want to do a group exercise. The staff is super friendly as well! It's got great family and community vibes. They've also got a helpful website that makes scheduling appointments and checking out classes super easy! read more

Not the place to go for racquet sports: Failed tennis program - As a new member and ranked tennis player, my wife has called, emailed and stopped by the office multiple times over the span of several weeks to engage with the tennis program. No one responds! Terribly mismanaged pickle ball - It's so odd to me that the fastest growing sport in the country, especially with older folks (who make up a large portion of this club - good for them!) isn't promoted or properly supported at this club. So many empty courts all of the time. Absolute waste of space and opportunity. If you aren't already part of a group or there to take a lesson, it ain't happening and extremely unwelcoming. The pool View is great. Pool needs maintenance and heat. Classes are fine for much older folks. Very nice and fun instructor, just wish there was more variety. Fitness Classes- Instructors are great, lots of variety. Gym is meh - Layout is weird but it's fine. Freezing in the fall and winter months No smith machines Locker room - Bathroom, sink/vanity area is fine Indoor jacuzzi needs to be deep cleaned at least once a week and cleaned daily. All the stained tile they can't get clean needs to be replaced. Overall, the price and the club's offerings don't match up. I echo the other reviewers when I say this place needs new energy and a revitalization. The resort style club they are promoting does not exist anymore. They need to pivot from hanging onto what was and get real about what they have today. We will be leaving the club and trying The Hub. I'll find a place to swim. Let me start off my saying I really tried to like this place. I was interested in the tennis courts more than anything! I purchased a single tennis training class to try it out and feel out the vibe BUT the trainer never showed up. The front desk checked me in and told me I would find the trainer Bethany in Court 3 or 4. I tried to go find her, had no luck and went to go ask the front desk for assistance AGAIN. He told me to check again but this time in court 5 or 6. Mind you this was my first time here so I was already lost and received no guidance or direction or even sense of care or urgency. Here I go again to check and NOTHING. Bethany no where to be found! Finally I was told by another member of the club Bethany wasn't even in on this day! The front desk lied to me and had me going back and forth. I did a walk through all 17 courts just to be told my classes had been cancelled. The front desk told me to write down my contact information and that he would have his manager reach out to me regarding a refund or reschedule.. still haven't heard from them days later. Would not recommend. This wasted a significant amount of time and was especially discouraging as a prospective member. I was excited to evaluate the program and the coaching, but the lack of coordination and inaccurate information made that impossible. read more

I love the clean locker room, sauna, jacuzzi! I love the weight rooms and outdoor option with so much space between machines. And so many tennis courts! HBC is a longstanding symbol of Alameda elitism. Having a membership here meant you were part of the in crowd, one of the cool kids. I can still remember riding my bike past here as a kid -- the chain link fence along the pool offering a purposeful and windowed glimpse into the life of the "rich and famous" - a world that was out of reach to me anyway as a dress-for-less shopper. I felt so lucky to be able to come here every once in a while if a wealthy friend of mine invited me as their guest or had a birthday party here. Thirty years ago, I think this place really deserved the reputation it established for itself. But today, they're really riding hard on those laurels. The place hasn't changed a bit since those days... literally. HBC today looks like a dusty, dilapidated time capsule of what it once was. I think the owners kept every last dime since 1990 and have a very cushy 401k, because this place has survived on crumbs and sticks. For the price you pay you can go to a way better gym. Reason going there, it's close to home and felt pretty much safe. After hearing two blocks away there was a home invasion, now car break-ins think it's time to leave. Had our truck broken into last night in there parking lot. We pay close to $200 a month for this gym now on top of this month it's costing us a grand total of $675! You're better off going to crunch or 24 hour fitness. I don't write reviews ever so this is a first. We just ended our membership at HBC because they refuse to do anything about an individual who was caught redhanded going through my partner's bag in the men's locker room within HBC. When the individual was confronted about it, he panicked and then stated he couldn't find his wallet (which somehow makes it acceptable to go through a bag that doesn't belong to him). He then went to the front desk to ask for his wallet, they stated that they did not have his wallet, but then he came back to the locker room to tell my partner that the front desk DID have his wallet so everything was "all good" according to this individual. My partner then checked with the front desk to follow up on the individual's alleged claim and the front desk confirmed (on camera) that THEY DID NOT GIVE THE INDIVIDUAL A WALLET. My partner then brought this to the attention of HBC management who stated they would investigate but all they did was give the individual a slap on the wrist by sending out an email warning about the incident that simply requested that the individual does not go through another person's bag again, which essentially let's the individual know that he was reported (and can make an educated guess as to whom reported him) AND he gets to still be a member at HBC LOL. My issue with this is the fact that the manager SLIPPED and said, "It's strange that he was stealing because he's been a member since he was little," which automatically makes us feel like she picked sides before "investigating" even though we aren't in the wrong here. After the report was made, management took down our contact information but did not follow up with us at all. My partner immediately went to management AFTER he saw the individual working out in HBC like nothing happened. After speaking to the manager, she stated, "he was just looking for his wallet," which is another justification to his wrongdoing. We gave management a choice to either take real disciplinary action against this individual or we terminate our membership and I can't make this up, the manager--without hesitation-- said, "I can accept that" [to us leaving] and chose to keep the individual as an ACTIVE member. That's right, he's still actively going to HBC. It's insane that they're choosing to keep the conniving individual at the expense of the wellbeing of the other members of HBC. We canceled our membership today based on this incident because we don't feel protected or safe or heard. Became a member after Harbor Bay hosted a Bay Area 'pickleball day' on 9/30. Overall a very well run and successful event, the goal of the event was for people to join the club based on the facilities and program offerings of Harbor Bay. I joined that day as a result. Between 9/30 and early Jan I had tried many times to discuss with staff (membership team, front desk, tennis pro, activities director... just to name a few) what were their plans outside of a years old decayed signup sheet on a bulletin board to welcome new sports (tennis and pickleball) members. Questions such as: - do you offer drop-in play, so I can meet other members - do you do introductions between members - do you have anyone coordinating USTA teams that I can speak with Most of the people I asked (front desk, membership team) had ZERO idea. Was referred to the 2-3 people (activities director, tennis pro, pickleball pro) that maybe did know. I tried calling, emailing and dropping by the club to ask these people. NEVER RECEIVED 1 RESPONSE. NEVER. I then asked membership director and front desk again, hoping they can flag this for those people. NO ACTION. I really wanted to like Harbor Bay club, but it is utterly mismanaged with zero accountability or demonstration of ownership. I have since tried the Hub in Alameda and love it. Professional, courteous and downright nice staff, clean facilities, level of play is consistent and has something to offer everyone. Last, its pretty funny that my wife and I had no coordinated effort about capturing reviews for Harbor Bay. Though it was a disappointment to both of us. I see under recent reviews she also posted. I am not someone who frequents yelp for reviews (reading or posting) however I do think Harbor Bay needs to receive this message (I've delivered to their front staff verbally) if they have any hope of turning things around there. read more

This review is specifically for Hein Tu's tennis summer camp, as well as for HB Club's General Manager, Louise Howard. I've waited 2.5 years to publish this review because I didn't want to disparage the after school program or the swim program by association. My daughters and I had great experiences with those two programs. But after 2.5 years, I remain as disappointed and hurt as ever about the experience I had with Hein Tu and Louise Howard. It is easily the worst customer service experience I've ever had. I'm proud of how I handled my end of the communication. Of how exceptionally fair I was in taking full responsibility for my children's behavior, apologizing for the length of my e-mail to Louise, and thanking her in advance for her time and attention; while still respectfully seeking accountability for Hein Tu's extraordinary lack of professionalism and courtesy. Louise Howard could not be bothered to read through my concerns or accept responsibility for her employee Hein Tu's lack of professional communication skills. No matter what a child has done, no parent should have to hear from a caregiver that their children are "the worst; the worst." As a customer service provider myself, I know that professional communication entails listening to the customer's concerns - no matter how long it takes; and empathizing with the customer's feelings - whether you agree with them or not. Objectively by any standard, Louise Howard failed to communicate with me in a professional manner. Which probably explains her employee Hein Tu's egregious lack of professionalism and civility. I just recently took a private swimming lesson with them. Definitely not worth $50. The quality of lesson was low, and I didn't learn as much as you would expect to learn when taking a private lesson. The instructor didn't seem to know what to do. He constantly kept asking me if I have any questions, which was annoying. I expect for an instructor to have a developed lesson plan that he actually follows. This wasn't the case. Regarding the facility itself, I've read reviews stating that the place is dated, but I actually like it that way. Brings be back to 80ties and 90ties, which is quite nice. So I've been going to HBC spa for almost 25 years. I get my massages here almost exclusively. The last few times I have been really disappointed. I used to feel like I was really going to a spa (bathrobes, use of lockers, tea in the waiting room, etc.). Now I feel like I'm just going into any old spa in a strip mall. None of those things are offered anymore. They also used to accept payment in their fun little nail salon and I'd always buy some merch, but that stopped too. I'm super sad b/c this was always my go to place. Today I went and the hot tub was empty. I should just book a service at home. The good news is their massage therapist have been there for many years, and they continue to deliver great massages. Thank you to them! read more

Yes it's dated and not very exciting but it's the best club. I swim everyday outside looking at the sun set behind the city. It's such a nice place to swim! I use the sauna, hot tub, and treadmill. This place is always quiet mostly empty (except the pool) and I love it this way. I relax and take care of myself without a lot of action. read more

I joined mainly for the pool - and proximity to new job on South Alameda island. The club is spacious and has a ton of equipment. The layout is a bit odd since the old racquet ball courts are now equipment rooms. The pool is usually not too crowded and I haven't had to circle swim in the last 3 months. However, in the warmer weather, when there are more kids, the lifeguards will take out lane lines to give the kids more of the pool. I'm ok with this but there should be a limit -- kids get off school a lot earlier than most adults get off work. Kids should not always have top priority -- and during times when lap lanes are occupied with junior swim team or masters -- it would be better to return lanes from rec swimmers (who have had all afternoon!) to lap swimmers. There's enough space -- the place could have a kiddie pool for hot weather splashing (like the multi-pool set-up at Heather Farms or Campolindo). I enjoy the saunas and jacuzzi in the ladies locker room -- and the convenience of having a locker. The staff are super friendly and the place is kept very clean. The aquatics staff are also super friendly, welcoming, warm and professional. All the swimmers I've met are friendly and relaxed -- it's a much better experience than other pools where I have spent my swimming time. read more

I went to high school in Alameda and was always intrigued by this club for many many years, and when I finally had a chance to sign up, I was pretty disappointed in the lack of quality of this gym. The equipment, especially the weights are very outdated. This place needs a renovation asap.... Feels like you're walking into an old crusty gym. For the price I was paying, I expected much more in regards to perks. Never understood why they call it a "club". Plus, you can't bring in a guest. Every other gym allows guests The pool and tennis courts are great however if you're looking for a great gym to get cardio, weight training, and overall bang for your buck, there's a new gym in alameda that is 1/4 of the price and has an insane amount of variety of machines. I enjoyed being a member of the club. It is a nice facility. However, I was profoundly disappointed when I cancelled my membership. There was a miscommunication about cancellation and I ended up paying four months of fees I was unaware of after I thought I had signed out. Harbor Bay Club would not take the time to consider that they had responsibility in the miscommunication. I found this so very disappointing after being an active and good member for a significant time. I had to pay up or continue to owe fees. I would be very careful about getting the name of any staff who provide you information and when possible get information in writing so that you can have some way to verify your claims. Im a new member here, I have been here 5/7 days so far probably. This place is great. I tried a few gym tours before finding this place; this was one of the few places who cared about showing you the grounds. Cassie gave me a great tour and all the details I needed about becoming a member. Everyday the staff members are friendly. Lots of classes and things to do besides your basic gym. Private and outdoor Hot tubs, saunas, private outdoor sun tanning, spa services, tennis, lots of workout equipment, heated pool. I have yet to join a class but they all seem run really well. They make it easy for you to meet a personal instructor if you are looking for one. Parking outside is a dream, even when its busy, its a dream! This place isnt perfect. Small things, Giving an item for a locker room key is annoying and they gave me a scan card but no scanner to get in? Weekends/Busy days, by the evening the womens locker runs out of towels and they dont stock towels in the outdoor locker rooms as far as I can tell. The outdoor gym they set up for covid is just ok, I am happy they tried to comply to safety standards. Overall 4/5 stars will be keeping my membership for awhile. read more

The member price is around $160 / month and they have to pay an additional $15 (per visit) if they want to bring a non-member friend to play tennis or pickle ball with them on one of the facility's many empty outdoor courts (not even the real Bay Club charges members to bring a buddy for the courts). I had a wonderful experience at the nail salon here at Harbor Bay Club! I never even knew there was a nail salon here until I saw a deal on Groupon. For $33, you can get a nice manicure and pedicure. Martha was my nail technician and I felt well taken care of. She was gentle, took her time through out the whole process, and paid attention to detail. The foot and hand massage was so wonderful --I felt that I really got my bang for my buck. I definitely recommend giving this place a try, especially with the Groupon promotion that's currently going on! read more

I'm astonished this spa is in business , I called for 2 pedicures, they cant accommodate 2 pedicures. So I made them one after the other. THEN I get an email demanding payment with a credit card to have on file. I siad no, I would give them a credit card the next day when I got there or over the phone. Keep in mind, while on the phone, no one asked for a credit card. I tried to call them back, no answer, then i get an email CANCELLING the pedicures. So within 5 min I made an appt and they cancelled it because they wouldn't answer the phone, take a number or wait 24 hrs for me to come in with pmt. I went online and submitted a request for membership info. No response. I found a general email account and sent a request for membership info. No response. I walked in on a Saturday and asked about membership info. They don't have a membership representative on the weekends so they gave me a business card. I emailed the person on the business card. No response. I think I'll go find somewhere else to spend my money if this is the level of customer experience I can expect. I love this place! It is beautiful and relaxing. My kid gets to go with me for free to swim. There are lots of amenities that I appreciate. The location is beautiful and the other members are very nice. The membership person was very nice and alerted me to the membership discount that I was eligible for. It is not cheap but it's work it for my health. I wanted to add that I had some spa services with Carrie. It was too notch. I had a "chemical peel" after spending thousands in facials and feeing like I really only got a face wash I decided to go for a peel. Well Carrie was fab. She answered all my questions, gave me several samples to try and even plucked my eyebrows bc she said not to wax close to a peel. Anyway: the desired effect took place, I look fresher and indeed younger! I will be back! read more

I joined mainly for the pool. It has been a pretty disappointing experience. The club is old and dated. The pool locker room is crowded when there are two people in it, if there are 3-4 it is unusable. The place needs a serious refreshing. Being able to swim is often difficult if you work during the weekdays because it seems like mornings or evenings it is always booked for masters swim, lessons or some swim team or another. I have been booted out on a number of occasions. I too have tried to talk to Maureen about what the schedule is for the pool but she is never around and does not return email. The people that are there working really don't know what is going on. It is convenient if you live in Alameda but I have a feeling that is why the experience there is what it is. If could give zero stars for the spa I would. Received the worst mani pedi of my life. Nail lady was unprofessional, unskilled, and rude. I asked for a pearly white with a glitter layer on top. She said three layers would be too much and wouldn't dry on time. I said that was fine and I'd just go the single color with no glitter. As we get started she changes her mind and says we can do it. It takes her TWO HOURS. During which time she trims my cuticles three different times and tugs instead of cuts and shreds my nail beds. She also does an awful job buffing the nail, and the nail is literally not smooth prior to applying color so it gathers in little clumps. I ask her to fix them and she misunderstands and keeps cutting down on my cuticles (hence the three times). She also cleans the area around the nail with nail polish remover between each round of nail polish (this was SO REDUNDANT). By the time 6:30 rolls around, she's rude and slapping a top coat on top haphazardly with the lamp turned OFF and can barely see so not even half of the nails have a proper top coat! I need her to redo a bunch of them. One of the nails, she gets that nasty dried polish crust part around the bottle rim onto the brush and CONTINUES swiping it on my nail. I show her and ask her to fix it. She yells at me and says this is what happens when you want a white nail color and of course it's not going to dry properly bc she had to do three layers (WTF. It was so dark she literally couldn't even see the nail). I tell her it's not the color issue, it's the nasty crust. She grabs some remover and dabs it onto my nail with her finger and tries to smooth down the crust and swipes the white pearl color back on top. Didn't replace the color, didn't put a top coat on it. She also stopped cleaning the nail polish off the skin at this point (so what was the point of doing it between swipes anyways) and then told me to leave. Told me to come back the next day to redo the screwed up nail if I was that unsatisfied. Literally will never let her touch my nails again no thank you. There was also a woman working at the counter who kept loudly talking about how it was her day to spend time with her granddaughter very loudly in the back and she couldn't leave until the customer was done. MA'AM. I literally can do nothing about it minus walking out with half done nails. -If you need to take two hours to do a simple, regular nail polish mani pedi, schedule earlier so you can leave the office on time and don't take it out on the customer. -Get a small fan to dry nails faster. It took that long because you are literally there watching paint dry. read more

It saddens me to write this review but I wouldn't waste your time or money here. The club themselves is an alright environment for gym use, pool, and the classes they host. Apart from those three pros about the club they have quite some concerns regarding their childcare. The staff that is current is not attentive with the children and what happens with their surroundings. They have let children use technology/social media from staff members devices (without any parent consent) , it seems they do not care for rules nor policies when it comes to safety of the children that is in their care, I have also noticed majority of staff there are kids themselves which makes me question if they are trained or educated on child development/safety protocols pre getting hired. The club had been a great place to go to a couple years ago but it's sad to see the lack of effort and the decline from the facility especially with the prices they ask for I would expect better for the care of my children! read more

The massage: 3.5 stars. The facilities: 2 stars. The massage therapist was late but the massage itself was very good. 1/2 star off for being late and still ending on time. That means I got less massage time, right? The facilities are small. The gym has fewer pieces of equipment than my normal gym. However, they do have extensive tennis courts. I guess it's a USGA facility. The swimming pool was outdoors and not heated enough. A couple of whirlpools (one outside and one inside the locker room), a sauna, showers, and lockers. The place felt a bit out-dated. It's clean which is a huge plus. The staff didn't seem overly helpful. Everything was very blah. Instead of them offering up information, we had to sort of squeeze it out of them. It was an "eh" experience. read more
