My Ate Rachelle invited me to try out Step 1 Dance & Fitness' Wednesday 7pm beginner adult hip-hop…read moreclass with coach Joe H. Personally, I'm more of a Zumba gal so this style of dance was really out of my comfort zone and I didn't know what to expect. First time in, and the drop-in price for the class was $15. While waiting for the previous [full] class to finish in that room (Zumba), restrooms were all the way down the hall and they also have an Elkay water bottle filler. There were at least two or three more rooms in use for youth/teen classes, and folding chairs along the hallway for parents/spectators too. There were less than ten people total in the class by my estimate, and it is once a week recurring. It sounded like the past two weeks they were working on choreography moves, but this evening Joe wanted to focus on a basic skill tutorial/demo -- the Wave! The arm wave is one of the coolest foundational illusions in popping, where you make your arm look like a ripple of water. After a warmup meditative movement set, he really broke it down step by step, practicing each position, first a cappella then with music, slow first then sped up, then added variations/flair. Isolating each joint is the key: fingers/hands up, then pop wrist, elbow up, pop shoulder up, chest, then once at opposite shoulder, reverse the path down the other arm! He also showed us a trace wave transition into a body wave, popping the left knee, then right knee, hip, chest, head, then trace back to the arm/hand. You could even do the arm wave at shoulder level, down at your waist, with both arms parallel, or point at each pop of the body wave. He also showed us the difference between waving out versus waving in. One water break pause during the hour, but otherwise it was fun to learn and follow along. The class after us was Beg/Int Contemporary Fusion 8pm, then Heels at 8:30pm. For adults they also have Jazz, Tap, Ballet, Line Dance, Fierce Funk, Soca Dance Fitness, Stretch Fusion and Sculpt & Define. https://step1danceandfitness.com/pdfs/Adult-schedule.pdf

Each girl has tried one dance class and is being given the opportunity to try a second to find the best fit. I was so impressed with the instructors child centered welcoming demeanor today. I brought my youngest to the wrong time trial class and the instructor said "I don't want to turn you away so stay, have fun and we will fit you in where we can . . ." This was so thoughtful. The missing star is for the factor of sharing the building with the karate school. The owner is very traditional and strict. My girls and I are not fans of this style of speaking and relation. I am determined to make the best of it and choose to see the positives in his energy and presence.

First, when you go there, you can't watch your child in the classroom through glass. You have to sit in the lobby and watch them on a TV screen. And the staff will tell everyone to be quiet. What really bothered us was that they really don't tell you the real cost to put your child here. Be prepared to buy, FROM THEM, an overpriced dance recital outfit, and be chastised if you try to photograph or video your child's performance. They'd rather you pay a HUGE price for a crappy video of EVERY dance recital. That means you might get about 40 seconds of your child's performance in a 1-hour video. To be honest, people, I don't care about your kids dance performance. I care about mine. I'm sure you feel the same way...or you're lying. The lady that owns the place thinks she's a diva. She talks down to everyone and treats us parents like we're the 5-year-old students. So condescending. They certainly feel they have the best place in town, but let me tell you something. When we moved to a better and more friendly studio in YC, we and my child couldn't be happier. No wonder this place only has two reviews. And not so impressive, at that.

It was one of the best decisions we ever made. Everyone at Arthur Murray was super inclusive, welcoming, supportive, personable, professional, and gave off a happy go lucky and good times kind of vibe. They always remind us of upcoming dance lessons and they did a wonderful job rescheduling appointments when something came up. Renata was phenomenal, masterfully skillful at teaching, and patient with us as we attempting to perform the routine with two left feet. It's now after the wedding and life is returning back to normal. But we enjoyed the positive and inviting environment that Arthur Murray Dance Studio so much, that we now want to continue with them, and want to learn other dance forms. I would highly recommend Arthur Murray Dance Studio to anyone looking to learn a new dance, make new friends, get a decent aerobic exercise session, be uplifted with support, and generally want to have a fun time. My favorite phrase they use there is, "Dance is for everyone".

Owners grew up in the exact same environment and are never around to actually teach. They will show up when they are selling outrageously priced events to put you in FOMO mode. The model is new students all the time so the inexperienced teachers can fake their way thru lessons and charge a fortune. Go ANYWHERE else. Check out any of their annual holiday videos on YouTube and see for yourself. Not one good performance and lazy inexperienced teachers full of crap to pump you up and out of your money. The reason there are so many five star reviews is because they make it a requirement to go online and give them a review as part of a system to qualify for freebies. So again using their model to sell sell sell, you have to give them a good review so you can get a free lesson or a small party at the end of the month in which they ask you to bring your own food and supply all of the drink drinks for them and in my opinion is never a good deal.

I have been to many of the dance facilities in northern California/Bay Area, so I have a very good idea of comparable facilities. The dance floor is superior to the floor setups used in major studios and ballroom dance competitions. Since the studio's opening in early 2012, four showcases have been produced at the CDC with each showcase having a unique blend of local professionals and talented amateur dancers as well as professionals from NV, the Bay Area, and Southern California, and NJ. If you get to a CDC Dance Showcase or a major holiday dance event (e.g. Xmas or New Year eve dance party), you're in for a treat. Bill and Bobbi Roth, the studio owners, are the ultimate hosts. Oh - most importantly I almost forgot to mention that the studio has some of the finest dance instructors. This year one of the instructors and two of the amateurs from the studio were finalists in the U.S. Nationals Ballroom Dance Competitions with one of the amateurs finishing in 1st place. The best part for me is that sometimes I get to dance with them but always learning from them.
