My fiancee (now wife) recommended dance lessons for our wedding, which I was hesitant about, but she insisted I didn't look like a "schlub" during our first dance. While waiting outside the studio for our first lesson, we noticed a more experienced couple dancing extremely well, doing dips, lifts and the whole 9 yards. So we came in for our free dance lesson, because we wanted our first dance to be something more. Our instructor was Kyle and that man has a gift. Overall experience: My now-wife and I found Dance Reverie simply to learn a dance routine for our wedding. We had Kari as our private instructor, who went above and beyond what we expected from our dance lessons. She not only taught us a wonderful choreography that amazed our wedding guests and ourselves, but she also taught us a few bread-and-butter dances so that we could dance all the different songs in our wedding. Kari was very patient and flexible with our busy work schedule. She was also very receptive on how quick we were learning the steps, and pushed us to learn more advanced maneuvers to add more enjoyment in our dance! We were invited to join a Friday social, during which members of all ages and experience levels came to dance a variety of styles and showcase a few routines that we have been practicing. During the social, I decided to bring my parents and siblings over for my mom's bday - everyone was very welcoming to them, and my whole family had such a great time! We initially came to mark off a check box in our wedding checklist, but what we got out of it was a new hobby. We we definitely be returning once our schedule frees up again! Location: It's located along a fairly busy two-way street. There is no parking lot, but street parking is pretty plentiful and easy to get. It is also easily accessible by public transportation. Venue: Basic and not flashy - the focus really is on the dancing. The doors are very sound proof and the walls facing the outside - although glass, is very well tinted so that outsiders cannot peer into the dance studio. Inside is very spacious with two supporting beams in the middle of the room. Two opposing walls are covered from floor to ceiling in mirrors, while the other opposing walls have a few seats. THIS IS THE BEST WEDDING DANCE CLASS EVER! If you are looking to have a fun and yet useful wedding dance class, this is the place! Kyle is the best instructor I could ever asked for. My husband and I decided on learning tango for our first dance and we started taking classes about three and a half month before the wedding. We took about 14 private lessons and our performance at the wedding was absolutely stunning. We got so many great compliments about our first dance and a lot of the guests were interested in going to this place as well! Kyle was very professional, patient and paid great attention to every detail of the dance to make sure we would put on a great show. Both my husband and I had no prior experience in dancing, and yet we could perform a 4min tango show at our wedding, which was truly amazing! Kyle was also very flexible about the schedule. He has studios in two locations, one in FH and the other on LI. He could always accommodate our schedule, especially the couple of weeks leading up to the wedding. We found this studio through Groupon and I'm so glad we picked this studio when there are so many out there! They have 1 studio in Forest Hills and 1 in Mineola, and we mainly had our private lessons in the Mineola location since we live in Long Island. The studio is bright, huge, and clean, and we really enjoyed each of our lessons. My husband and I don't have dance backgrounds at all, but under our instructor, Kyle's patient guidance, we already got the basics in our first dance lesson! My husband and I felt so comfortable with Kyle's teaching that we scheduled our next lesson right after class. Kyle has martial arts background, and therefore, he has lots of "tricks" that can help us perfect the more advanced dance moves such as dip and lift. We only took 6 lessons total, but everyone was amazed at our first dance and how much we could achieve in such a short period of time. The best thing is Kyle taught us variation of steps, so whatever we learned can also be applied on any other ballads, unlike choreographed dance that can only be used on that certain song. We also wouldn't have to worry about missing a step because it can be easily fixed since we know the basics. The studio also has variation of skirts that they will provide you to wear in your last 1-2 lessons, so you can get a sense of how it would feel like during your first dance on your wedding day. We had a really memorable wedding and I believe our first dance is definitely one of the reasons that made the wedding special. TL;DR Kyle is an amazing instructor who makes you feel comfortable dancing. Our guests were impressed at how amazing our first dance was. What we paid was priceless when you factor in the memories we will always cherish. I highly recommend the 10 lesson package and that you start wearing the shoes you will be dancing in as soon as possible. Now for the wall of text. I want to preface this review with the fact that I hate having to do research for wedding "stuff." I'm a typical groom I guess and just wanted my bride to tell me how much it costs and where I need to be. I knew however, that I wanted dance lessons so we wouldn't look like we're dancing at prom. She found a place that was highly reviewed and close by so we went for our introductory lesson. The place itself is fairly large with a huge dance floor with mirrors on three sides of the room so you can see how good/bad you are doing. Kyle played our song and immediately went to work. He quickly showed us a basic waltz which already was better than we could have hoped for. My wife and I have decent rhythm but the main problem was the fact that I didn't know how to properly "lead" when dancing. He showed me how to lead by example, dancing with my wife, and a general idea of what our dance would be like in our first lesson. It seemed easy enough. It's what he called the "basics." We did that for the rest of the lesson which made the hour fly by. Once we were done we decided the 10 lesson package was the best deal for us and in the end was worth the memories. The 10 lesson package looks like it might be expensive but when you compare it to the rest of the wedding expenses it's actually the best bargain. Kyle is also very flexible with scheduling which was a huge plus. Ten lessons were also necessary because we were advised to not practice on our own till maybe after the sixth lesson because if you practice something wrong Kyle has to correct all your mistakes at the next lesson. This was fine because I needed the time to relearn some of the steps due to my forgetfulness. It's important to note that Kyle teaches you to dance and will not teach you a routine. I say this because what did we do when we started to practice on our own? We practiced a routine! He knew it when we showed up for the next lesson which was maybe lesson 8 or 9 because when we messed up we started blaming each other. Once he "fixed" us he made us dance for one of his group lessons to make sure there was no stage fright or any issues. We practiced twice during the cocktail hour because my wife was afraid that her dress would prevent her from dancing well. Those practice sessions were just ok. I felt we were a little rough but one of our photographer's assistants said it was the best first dance she'd seen. We were both nervous as hell before the dance because obviously there was a huge crowd and the uncertainty because of her dress. I remembered what Kyle had taught us which was essentially to "have fun and dance!" We didn't do a routine but managed to do everything he taught us with the exception of one lift. Our guests were constantly clapping with some of them in tears. We've seen some cell phone video of our dance and to be honest we view it often not just to watch us (which usually makes us tear up with happiness) but to look at the expressions on our friends and families faces. What we paid was truly nothing compared to the memories. We can't thank Kyle enough for all his help and we look forward to taking group lessons for fun in the future. I use to take lessons for my wedding at a different dance studio which was too dated, and then found this cool spot as they teach you modern moves and they don't pressure you in buying a package. Our dance instructor Kyle was really awesome and cool! He has a martial arts background and is really good in teaching forms and was able to work with your pace. After our first lesson, we felt a lot more confident in dancing and not memorize choreography. Therefore, we have signed up for more classes since they are so fun!
