I found this place on Yelp some year or more ago and promised I'd check it out! Had surgery a few weeks back and this was my post opp feel better splurge. Anna was my hairstylist. She did an awesome job! I've had long hair for a good 2 years now and needed to cut it a bit shorter than usual. Anna meticulously snipped away until she achieved a beautiful cut that works very well with my face shape, and is easy to maintain. Had a wedding next day and everyone gushed about how nice my hair looked! The place is very modern and chic, on the smaller side. Clean and well kept. There was a fun vibe all around. I was offered a beverage. Paid $130 for my cut, which to me is a bit more than what I'd pay at my local place. However this was a beautiful professional haircut! You can pay cash or credit, tip only cash or venmo. (Hate that I couldn't just add the tip to my credit card charge. Also when I was paying my jacket was just laying piled up clumsily on the counter, it was nothing fancy but it just bothered me.) read more

I have been putting off writing this review because in some ways it has been a true moral dilemma. On the one hand they deserve so much more than just 5 stars but on the other hand I want to keep this place my little secret gem. I have been a client of Dan's (not regularly, due to a Midwest hiatus) for the last 6+ years. It's obvious to provide someone with a haircut/style and have them leave your salon loving their look; it's skill, time, intention, and a vision that has that same person loving their cut and style months down the line. That is exactly what Dan accomplishes every time. I have unruly, curly hair and Dan consistently cuts it in a fashion that leaves me with no awkward stage or lopsided locks. Most recently I inquired about having a Keratin treatment in an attempt to transform my corky curls into a more relaxed, gentle beach wave. Dan immediately introduced me to Anna who took her time to talk to me about the keratin to be used, what to expect from the treatment, and essentially all the risks, benefits, and alternatives of it. With all the information at hand I went ahead and booked an appointment with Anna for the Keratin treatment. For the final style we decided to use the curling iron vs. a flat iron to ensure my curls didn't completely die but rather encourage them to retain that nice wave. It looked amazing! She did an exceptional job and was super attentive throughout the appointment. She talked me through each step and made sure I was comfortable the whole time. If I could give 10 stars I would... This review is so long overdue I am just a horrible person for not writing it sooner because this place and everyone at Danka Panka deserves to be recognized... They are amazing, simply utterly amazing without a drop of pretentiousness... First let me just preface this by saying I did some thorough research on trying to find a place that had great reviews AND wasn't 300 just for a haircut... After a month of searching countless websites, reviews, yelp, etc... I decided on Danka Panka.. You see I needed a change.. At the time when I went in I had very long hair almost to my booty... Except my hair as my friends called it was not so healthy (trust me I wanted to do locks of love but yeah my hair no bueno :-( ) I ended up having to change my appointment 3 times because I kept having to go out of town and Simon was helpful each and every time! I finally made it in on a rainy Friday afternoon and I loved the place from the minute I walked in. The Salon is small, modern, and decorated just right! And Simon is just as friendly in person as he is on the phone... I was doing both color and cut so I started off with Leslie... She is Awesome! I really wanted to go bold like blond, I am a brunette so I wanted to try something off in left field.. After talking with Leslie she convinced me that the state my hair was in, bleaching it wasn't the best idea... you see I am not one of those crazy people that refuses to take advice and think I know best about my hair.. in fact I tend to walk in to a place and tell them what I kind of want and than let them decide from there... Leslie told me she thought my hair would look better in red tones (which it does from past experience) but she ended up doing three different shades of red, kind of like ombre but not really... the time flew while she worked on my hair.. i talked her ear off which is rare for me but her vibe was cool and chill and we ended up having a great conversation... Once the color was done.. it was time for Dan to cut my hair.. the man is a genius... seriously.. i have in the past gone from long to short but never have I had a cut like this.. And I can say even now 3 months later my hair is still amazing... not only can he cut hair but he can carry on amazing conversation, and i mean genuine good talk about ethics, the world, etc... it was just pretty damn great... when he was finished and the color was finished I have to say I looked pretty amazing! The color was just incredibly rich looking and the cut was just the right amount of edgy, fun, and sexy! I was on cloud 9! This is the FIRST haircut that I have gotten so many compliments on.. Never in my life and I have been to some pretty talented hair stylists... have I received this many compliments, from coworkers, strangers, family and friends... even a couple of my guy friends that HATE short hair were like "wow Dena it looks really good." Now living in Orlando I refuse to have anyone touch my hair.. After years of trying different salons around NY (Bumble, ION, etc...) - I have found a keeper. Literally EVERYONE here is top shelf. I've seen both Jocelyn and Leslie for color - amazing. Dan cuts my hair, and really is the most highly skilled stylist I've experienced. Other awesomeness: -RIGHT next to my house (how am I this lucky?!) -Everyone that works here is super cool, I would hang out w any of them. I'm going to try and make this as useful a review for search engines as possible (Dan and the salon don't *need* more five star reviews), so that guys can google or bing or yahoo "where to get male long hair cut" and find Danka Panka. Since men and males like me with long or medium length hair have a tough time knowing where to get our hairs cut and not feel like we're intruding on a typical salon, I want to light the way for my brothers. Men out there, do yourselves a favor and just try it, you will not regret it. After my first hair cut with Dan, I took my hair length from below my shoulders to just above my nose...it was drastic for me, and really could've been a traumatic experience. Instead, I got home, smiled in the mirror, and thought, "this is the best hair cut I've ever had in my entire life." I'll never go anywhere else, if given the choice. I wanted to get a long bob (which involved cutting about 6 inches off) so I decided to splurge and go to Danka Panka to see Dan. I wanted to feel confident about the stylist who would cut my hair. I read an article about Dan in a magazine and read the yelp reviews before booking my appointment. I booked my appointment about 3 weeks ahead of time since he is a popular stylist. During the 3 weeks, I questioned my intent to get the bob multiple times and was discouraged by my mom and some friends. However, I felt brave this morning. Dan made me feel really good about my choice right away. He took a good 10 minutes talking to me about my hair and asking several questions to ensure that he would give me a cut that suited me. I was nervous when I saw how much hair was on the floor as he was cutting but the hair was promptly removed as he cut which I thought was comforting. At the end, I was extremely pleased. I felt that he really listened to me and gave me a haircut that made me feel confident and pretty. I went back to the office and got many compliments. My friends at school were also very impressed. The salon is very conveniently located about 3 minutes from the F train. The staff is professional. The ambiance is calm, clean and modern. I will definitely be back! read more

Well, thanks to Regina at Danka Panka, my hair looks like it just got back from the Carribean vacation of my dreams...I'm talking about subtle, kissed-by-the-sun, maybe-she's-born-with-it highlights. I'm growing out my hair so I'm a little scissor shy, and Regina was totally respectful of that - giving my hair a much needed shape up while sacrificing hardly any length. She also gave me a perfectly shattered baby doll (gone bad) bang that I'm seriously digging. They use SachaJuan products which are simply heavenly and smell like hopes and dreams realized. As someone with short hair, I'm at the salon pretty regularly every 6 weeks and I can't say enough how happy I am to have found Simon. I've been seeing him for about a year and have been super pleased with every cut, which has been different each time. He's really patient and a good listener and is especially skilled at taking all the reference photos I bring in and translating them to a cut that works perfectly for my own hair. Who knew there could be so many variations of a pixie cut?! Best of all, every cut I've had grows out really nicely so there's never any awkward phases. Might be the best haircut I've ever recieved. Dan is a true pro and while the cost is a bit more than Persons of Interest over on Smith the chop you get is on another level and worth it. The owners really did a great job with the space and their approach of being polished while kid friendly will make them a welcome part of the neighborhood. I needed a haircut bad and in short notice. I really wanted to try to Danka Panka since I just moved the neighborhood. I called probably 3 times within an hour trying to figure out which appointment was best and allowed me to get cut and color. Everyone on the phone was professional, helpful and patient with me. Finally I was booked with Rosa for a Saturday afternoon. I told Rosa that I wanted to cut a lot of hair but was nervous it would be too short. I showed her a bunch of images and she ran with it. She cut about 4 inches off but my hair still felt long. It felt fresh! I get compliments everyday since my appointment, which is all thanks to Rosa! She listens and is really talented. The salon itself feels very high end but at it's core is a "mom & pop" shop so very neighborhood-centric which makes me feel excited to return. 5 stars is not enough for this place... even if there was an option for 10 starts this place deserves 20+! All of the stylists I met and saw seem great and extremely talented but I was lucky enough to have Jocelyn who was my GODSEND and this is not an exaggeration. I had gotten my hair cut and colored from another salon this past Friday who had butchered and ruined my hair color. I literally walked out of the salon with an orange, long bob when I had specifically asked for my hair to be all one length, JUST above my shoulders, and a nice, blonde balayage. Needless to say I was not a happy camper and looked legitimately like a clown. Saturday morning (the following day) I walk into Danka Panka just as they were opening with no appointment and luckily for me Jocelyn has just had a cancellation so assisted me RIGHT away. From the get go she made me feel 100% better and confident in her ability to make me feel comfortable and confident in her that she could turn this around. She only had 2 hours to fully commit to me before her next client was scheduled. She got more than halfway there when her next client arrived for a quick cut. She spent 30-40 minutes with her next client and as soon as she was done went right back to work on my head. The process from start to finish took almost 5 hours- she had a lot of work on her hands. I was shocked to see the transformation she made. I was not expecting her to change ALL of the orange into a ashy blonde which is what I was originally going for and put my natural brown back into my roots and all throughout my head. Obviously there is no way for her to miraculously grow my hair but I am 100% returning to her for any hair cut/color change etc. I get in the future. Cannot boast enough about this place and especially Jocelyn! Highly recommend this place to anyone- prices are good (about average) and the service is impeccable! Danka Panka is the BEST! I have been to a lot of salons in a lot of places from Barcelona to Caracas. This is my favorite. It is beautiful and calm with a lovely outdoor space in the back. Dan and Regina did a masterful job in helping me transition to grey. It took about seven months. I'm done with color. No more trying to color my hair in solar showers on communal farms in France or the funky bathroom in the apartment I shared with some members of the Italian Communist Party (Refundazione, for any of you who care about such things). As one of my three daughters wrote in a text after I sent a photo "No More Root Drama!" Dan has an amazing gift for what he does and he is funny and kind and knows how to put people at ease and send them off feeling wonderful. Regina is very skilled and works quickly and attentively. She really had to work to get the warm tones out of my formerly reddish brown hair, changing it to an ash color that blends really well with the grey and silver hair. I feel like I'm letting the cat out of the bag, but this place is GREAT! Dan cut my hair on Saturday and I absolutely love it. He was super attentive and took his time to listen to my hair history and then shared his thoughts. We arrived at a perfect cut and I look forward to coming back soon. The salon is beautiful with lots of great tempting homemade goods. Dan's wife was super kind and even helped to make sure my daughter was comfortable during my visit. Worst color job I've EVER gotten, sadly! I asked for a face frame (couple of highlights) and got one side of my head yellow starting from about 2.5 inches down from the scalp. Unreal! Went back for a fix and was told I had to pay additional because it was so bad that it required an additional service to fix (I suppose this was my fault?!) The fix job did not fix it as I was then told I had to chose between blending the color upward to blur the line 2.5 inches down from scalp OR tone down the yellow on the one side...in summary after paying $200 I had to go elsewhere to fix it again and subject my hair to more color treatment when all I had asked for was a face frame. I understand results are not always perfect but where Danka Panka failed here was in owning that it was their awful job and their responsibility to correct, regardless of what that entailed or cost them. read more

Just had my first cut with Rosa, who is a newer addition to this salon. (Was also my first time to the salon!) As someone who has been around the block, as it were (when it comes to hair I've been to a million places over the years), I am thrilled with the results. She gave my medium length curly/keratin-treated hair a GREAT, simple cut -- but with just the right angles, etc. She listened nicely to my direction -- as rather convoluted as it might have been! She was mellow and fun to talk to, which also doesn't hurt at all! Doesn't hurt that the space is really just lovely all around. Not to be hyperbolic, but this place is truly amazing. To echo another reviewer, I have tried many salons in NYC over the last ten years, (and some very fancy-pants ones, at that), and am happier with the results at Danka Panka than anywhere else. I am a total convert. A conventional and risk-averse person with very thin hair and not much of it, I recently decided to go out of my comfort zone and get bangs. Having heard great things about Danka Panka from people in the neighborhood, I decided to visit and check out the vibe. The space itself is beautiful, warm, chic and unassuming; I immediately sensed it was the right place to get a new look. When I arrived, Dan put me at ease right away. Aside from being witty and charming, he is just really REALLY skilled-- he took time to find out exactly what I wanted, gave expert advice, and gave me a gorgeous cut that has grown beautifully over the past month. Other words that come to mind about Dan-- focused, thorough, calm, gentle, smart, centered, creative, of-the-moment... I was so happy that I sent my longtime boyfriend to Dan for a haircut, and he looks FANTASTIC too. (Finally someone gets his curls!) So, after this first great experience, I made an appointment with Vivi to get color. Just got home from getting highlights with her, and I sat down to write this review first thing because I could not be happier with the results. (I am literally ecstatic, like, I was squealing in the salon. Ecstatic.) I used to pay an arm and leg at Marie Robinson for color, and let me tell you, the beautiful, subtle, natural highlights Vivi created left me feeling so beautiful, that I will only see her going forward. She was thorough and knowledgeable while discussing ways to achieve the look I wanted, and she took every factor into consideration before we figured out a course of action. She's also funny, authentic and super detail-oriented. The highlights do not look like highlights at all-- it looks like I was just naturally blessed with this hair. I've been to Danka Panka twice now. Dan is absolutely wonderful! I've been searching for a hairdresser in NYC for years...one who I'm happy to visit again and again. He took so much time with me, meticulously cutting, explaining how to get what I wanted out of my hair, and I ended up with a cut I love - one that's low maintenance and looks fab ;). I've been seeing Vivi for about 6 years now. She knows her stuff- if you have curls or reddish hair you know what a pain it can be to find a quality hair stylist/colorist. I gladly followed her from Slope Suds - better atmosphere and customer service Danka Panka works hard to be good. Dan does the gentlest blow out I've ever experienced I do wish they had an online booking service especially since they are closed on Monday and Tuesday. Vivi did a beautiful updo for my wedding that stayed up without being stiff and looked beautiful when I took it down. She also fitted a friend of mine into her schedule for her own wedding when her stylist wrecked her hair- she looked amazing! They do cost a little more so I go less often than I would like but they are worth it. read more

After moving to NYC it became a struggle to find a nice salon that did quality work. I have long, textured hair and I am very particular and protective of it. Then I found Danka Panka where over the course of two years I worked with student-now-stylist, Leslie Tamayo. Leslie is meticulous and does exactly what you ask while elevating the vision you had. I even braved it and had my first coloring done by her and it turned out beautiful. I then went to another salon (due to receiving a promo certificate) and they ruined my hair. I immediately reached out to Leslie and she was able to fix my botched cut and dye job! I highly recommend Danka Panka salon and Leslie as a stylist. I recently went to Danka Panka because thanks to Yelp I found out that REGINA (formerly at Salon De Quartier on Smith Street and the ONLY reason to bother with that place) was now working here! I had just come off an awful experience at the aforementioned salon and came to Regina for a color correction and cut. I could not have been happier with the results! I left there with a beautifully done, natural-looking blonde and the most fabulous cut I've had in a long time. What everyone is saying here about the lack of pretentiousness is completely true. The space and the people are warm and inviting. The day I was there, Dan (one of the owners) has his assistant call in sick, so he was manning the phones and watering the plants - he even went next door and bought us all Cappuccino's at one point! What you'll find at this salon are true professionals who care about what they do. Regina took an enormous amount of time with me and completely understood what I was looking for - more importantly, she wouldn't let me leave until SHE was completely satisfied with the result. Dan is amazing, short and simple. He's also funny as hell, talented, experienced,kind and just generally so welcoming and lovely! I got my hair cut here on a whim and I'm a convert. I got my hair cut by Dan and he asked me a zillion questions and played with it dry for awhile and then knew exactly what to do. I also got it colored by Jocelyn and just wanted to do something fun. Dan and Jocelyn had a little pow-wow and they thought since it was my first time coloring my hair, they'd do some low-key, playful ombre highlights. I loved the cut and the color. LOVED IT. Sensational salon!! This place is on point. Dan gives me beautiful cuts and Regina always exceeds my expectations with color. My most recent style is shoulder length, textured, with blonde highlights. I've never been so complimented on my look! I don't have words for how much I love this place. For years, I dyed my hair at home with drugstore boxed stuff and barely cut my hair (certainly not as much as it should've been), but I finally decided to treat myself to a proper color and cut job. Vivi did my color and Dan did my cut, and I love them both. Not only did they both take time to talk to me to ask my opinions and offer their own readily before trudging forward (which many, MANY places do), but they did an incredible job with it. In the end, my hair was dramatically different in the best possible way, and I left feeling like a million bucks. Going to the salon can be a really awkward experience if you're more self-conscious like I am (and so many other women are), but Vivi and Dan not only made me feel comfortable, they made me feel really good about myself and were so genuinely lovely, and that alone was worth the money. The fact that my hair looks absolutely incredible now feels like an added bonus! I'm so glad I've found a regular place to go that I love so much.
