Sam is always a joy for a hair day at A La Mode from a trim to a balayage. I've gone to her several times and always walk out feeling flawless. A La Mode is in the heart of Bay Ridge and is easy to get to on 3rd Avenue. The salon is always clean and the employees are kind and respectful to each other and the clients. I have a feeling this place has great management. This is the type of place that would fix a cut that left you unhappy. A La Mode is a bit more tech savvy and modern. With your permission, you might see your new hair on their Instagram page for hundreds to swoon over. They have a texting system which sends automated "appointment reminder" messages right to your phone. It's convenient and you'll never have to Google their number again. With beauty comes price. You get what you pay for (great services) so don't expect a cheat cut or color. I was surprised by the price of my balayage ($400) but to be fair I should have checked on the website beforehand or asked a staff member beforehand. Looking forward to being back soon for a trim. I've been using this salon for a few years. My regular stylist is Shadi, but I am not always familiar with who the colorists are. Each staff member is always friendly and professional. The shop is kept clean and is stylishly decorated. The products they sell/use are also good brands, although they do not try to sell or "push" the items on you as some salons do. Although I've only used Shadi for cuts, I can tell from other patrons that they are regulars with their stylists and always seem happy with the results. Online appointment requests are always responded to promptly, and reception is always quick to offer beverages and make you feel comfortable. I recommend A'La Mode because of its convenient Bay Ridge location, friendly service, and because I always leave looking better than when I came in. On a personal note - I appreciate that my stylist understands I am not much of a talker and am oblivious when it comes to hair styling, so I trust Shadi entirely with my hair. I've also referred Shadi to my sister, who needed a proper glaze on her red hair last summer, and she was over the moon with the results. While I only deal with Shadi, I assume any stylist who works there meets his standards, and I appreciate A'la Mode's family-owned business. I believe his brother is also a stylist there. Lastly- I've been to countless over-priced, over-hyped Manhattan Salons where I paid a ridiculous amount for mediocre services or coloring. However, A'la Mode is reasonably priced and transparent about its pricing on its website. If other services are recommended during the consult, they explain why and how much the price is. Honest salons that provide quality services are hard to come by in New York. A'la Mode is one of them, and even if Bay Ridge is out of your way, I recommend giving them a chance if you are looking for a quality experience. Also - FYI, they don't take Amex. read more

Thank the universe for A 'La Mode! My experience from start to finish was exactly what I needed to restore my faith in the hair industry in New York. I had requested an appointment online and was promptly replied to set up a time with Shadi. I was able to get in quickly and on short notice. The salon was buzzing for New Year's Eve hair. The design of the salon was sleek, luxurious and had literally EVERY perfect product line you could wish for. I arrived a bit early for my appointment and was greeted by Shadi immediately. I was offered a beverage and Shadi and I immediately started our consultation. I had an excellent shampoo and blowout from Shadi's assistant. She was so kind and accommodating. Shadi knew exactly what to do with my hair. My texture is a bit difficult to work with and I felt like I was in good hands. We had a nice conversation, and my hair came out gorgeous. I went to this salon for a hair lightening and cut. I have explained what I wanted and showed the stylist a photo. Salon was busy and the owner( my stylist) was everywhere , watching all over around him. As a result, my hair was still dark with a gray-sh "highlights" ( which I asked him to not to do,I always do ombre or balayage.) The hair wash was horrible,I was all soaked. By the cashier the owner asked me why I was so upset. I explained again,and he was like " oh,now I understand what you need. When you come next month I will do it." Me and my daughter have had haircuts here and both were decent. I just tried to schedule another haircut for my daughter and her younger sister and was told they only do ages 7 and up which is false bc my oldest had her first haircut there at 4. She's currently 5. One star bc I felt lied to and thought the question of whether they can stay still in their seat was silly since age doesn't determine that. My daughter has had three cuts and blow outs. No issue. This salon should also update their site to say 7 and up. I went on the site and confirmed it doesn't specify the age so this does feel made up in the moment. Makes me wonder what other things they inconsistent with. read more

Not pleased. I was seen quickly, and the salon was clean. The stylist barely looked at the photo I brought. (She did not introduce herself either, so I wasn't able to catch her name) She seemed confused by the photo I brought, even when I told her I had had this haircut the previous year. She barely even glanced at it. My hair is now too short to attempt fixing, so I will not be asking for that, or coming back in the future. I understand my hair is curlier and thicker looking than the photo I brought with me, but I've had this haircut previously. I also asked for the stylist to cut off the dead ends (remnants from a bleaching incident last year), but she just cut so much off. I was also charged $63 for just a haircut, no wash, or styling afterwards (which I had requested because of previous reviews). All in all: Too overpriced for mediocre work. read more

Your coat is hung, you take your seat. and you are ready for a truly professional experience. His attention to detail & thoughtfulness about what he was doing was apparent throughout. He seems passionate & invested in what he's doing.
