This is one of my favorite venues in town. I end up coming here for punk shows. The venue is small and the stage is not too high off the ground. This is great if you want to get up close to the band you are watching. There are two bars inside which makes grabbing a drink between sets easy. This place is great during the evenings! It has a cozy-divey feel to it and I think it was a lot of fun to visit. Their bar doesn't have a lot of tap choices but it's nice that there's two bars to choose from inside. The bartenders were wonderful to work with and kept up with the volume of orders very well. The staff were welcoming and friendly enough. They did well at remembering who came and left which was surprising with how many people were there. No one should be surprised that a rock n roll club experienced in the harsh light of day is a completely different animal than its usual nighttime persona. Sure, you still get a surly bouncer, sticky floors, an even surlier bartender, and darker-than-your-basement-crawl-space lighting. It's all good though; that's just part of the formula, and I appreciate Dante's for staying true to the rock roll spirit, which is why I usually shuffle in at night to see shows. But this afternoon, I just wanted to get out of the hot afternoon swelter, and their cold draft beer was just the ticket...even if I was chugging it in a dark, empty space with just five other people. I didn't hang around for long afterward -- hearing three minutes of the open mic comedy deal they had going was more than enough -- and those harsh ammonia cleaner fumes were starting to hit me. I guess I don't rock out as hard as I used to. To be clear, this isn't a review of Dante's as a music venue, but rather as a place to grab a brew in the afternoon. It's a much better rock club than it is a pub. It's also a shame I wasn't hungrier, else I'd have grabbed a greasy slice from the in-house Pizza Slut window. Their NY-style slices are usually pretty solid -- or at least they are at 11pm before the next band goes on... Parking can be a bear around here and the Rescue Mission is right across the street, so ya know. read more

I haven't even been to a show at Dante's yet, but their vibe, employees, & street accessible slices are worth a shout out! If you're here on four wheels vs two, they've got you. Boasting a large parking lot to accommodate their live shows, this venue is well prepared. I imagine a live show would boost them even higher. Stay tuned! read more

I was at the Mickey Avalon show Saturday, and it was only a good experience because of him and how nice the bartenders were. It had been 100° during the day, and it was absolutely sweltering inside the venue. I was actively sweating while standing and ordering a drink. There was no mitigating of any kind of the heat inside, I spoke to multiple people who felt the same, many who had also complained, and I was still charged $3 for water. There was also no soap in the women's restroom, and one of the toilets was repeatedly flushing all night. I left the concert early because it was so uncomfortable and the facilities were so poor. This was their response. They can keep their filthy women's bathrooms all to themselves. read more

Nice intimate venue to see bands. Depending in the night, there are 2 bars open, sometimes a single bar. There is a pizza place at the corner that serves the club and outside. Fair prices for food and drink. The staff has always been cool to me. Has a similar feel to clubs in Hollywood, CA's sunset strip. read more

Been here a handful of times for friends performances. A coworker had a show this time so I went to check him out. Drinks are strong, but a bit overpriced. I got an AMF, it was $16, tipped $3 so total $19 for an AMF. She was friendly and busy. The tall bald security guy is a major hottie. I should've gave him my number lolz. Cover charge this night was $13 I think? I'm not a fan of cover charge but I am all for supporting a friend and local bar/businesses that have been around a long time. First off security was rude af tried to turn us away before we could show our tickets and told us the food line is down the street! When they actually let us in it was great got to see my friend's favorite band on her birthday but the bathroom was pretty gross smelled of vomit, beer and old urine! After the concert before leaving we decided to hit up that pizza window outside and the pizza was hard and not fresh literally tastes like it had been sitting under a light all day then warmed up. Seconds after giving us the pizza as me and my friend were literally the only ones in the line while I was putting cheese and stuff on my pizza that the employee provided us to put on the pizza he rudely told us to leave. If I had to guess which of the classic circles of Hell is embodied most by Dante's, lust would be the most obvious choice. Events such as the Sinferno Cabaret, Karaoke from Hell, and several other sultry, sexy shindigs throughout the year make it pretty obvious which sin is this club's guilty pleasure. Not to mention the enticingly named "Pizza Slut" window (available inside and streetside), which serves up a hot slice of surprisingly decent pizza for a few bucks. I've come to Dante's to see various (mostly heavy metal) shows for more than a decade, and despite its diminutive size, this club has a lot going for it. Any venue where you can lean directly onto the stage (or be thrown onto it, as has happened to me before), without any barrier between you and the band, is a huge plus for me. Often packed to the gills, somehow there's always room for a mosh pit. Most importantly, though, is the fact that the sound quality has never been an issue here. Even when dialed up to 11, vocals come through clear, solos resound and reverberate, and even the most vigorous drummer fails to overwhelm the melody. I'm not sure if that boils down to the acoustics of the building or the talent of the sound engineers, but it's a welcome change from most other venues. They understand, revere and cherish rock and metal here. They get it. Drinks are overpriced and on the small-ish side, but not nearly as watered down as the Roseland or the Hawthorne. Frequently there is a cover, as live entertainment is the draw here, so be prepared to fork over a few bucks to get in. Come prepared; their ATM is frequently busted or out of cash, as are most others in the immediate area. Once you're in, though, be prepared to have your face melted off by sick shredding, salubrious shots, singing sirens and sexy succubi shaking it on stage. If Hell had been this much fun, Virgil would never have left. read more

Dante's Inferno is a fiery dive into the depths of hole in the wall hell... which is exactly what they're going for. Drinks are not flashy and get you drunk. You can pay for a gooey slice of pepperoni at Pizza Slut to soak up some of that booze, and they frequently have some sort of live music or act going on. I think Dante's would want me to give them a one star to preserve their vibe, but I'm sticking with four. Come by for the hellish service. read more

The last time I went to Dante's I showed up with a small group. They made us all pay a cover charge at the door. About five minutes later they said they were closing so we have to leave. I asked for my cover charge back and the guy working said he couldn't help me because the guy in charge was no longer there. A friend invited me to Karaoke From Hell on Monday night at Dante's. Where instead of a track there is a live band. The backing band was fantastic! The bartender seemed more like a bouncer than a bartender, but he mixed good drinks. Got their pizza and it was pretty dang good. read more

I was walking by and loved the "keep Portland weird" outside and so we went inside for a beer. The bartender was super friendly and let me try the drafts. They did not have much of a selection on tap but I was happy with what they did have! The inside is kinda cool, all black with red lights. We came in this afternoon, hungry, after attempting to go to several other restaurants that are closed on Tuesdays. I was a little nervous how we would be received in an empty bar, midday, that obviously specializes in rowdy nighttime rock shows. They couldn't have been nicer. Everyone we encountered, including Elvis, a local celebrity, was so welcoming to us. Elvis described Dante's as being like Cheers, my dad commented that it's like Cheers with better music. We bought some pizza from a literal hole in the wall connected to the bar, the service was fast and friendly. The pizza was affordable and the slices were huge, it was exactly what we were hoping for. We will be back again, next time at night, to see a show. read more

My adult daughter and me occasionally go to downtown Portland on Saturdays and we will play 20 dollars at Dante's lottery machines (we won big there once). Well, we will never go back there again. Last Saturday we went there and the misogyny from the bartender (Eric) was so aggreges, we will never return. Here is what happened...We asked for chardonnay or champagne and he said they didn't have any. We didn't complain, we just asked, well do you have cider? It was a hot day and he heard my daughter say to me "it's hot in here" (it was an over 100 degree day). That set him off and he unleashed on us. I will tell this story to everyone I know and tell them to never go to Dante's. Please vote blue in November because t rump is giving license to many to do this sort of thing. New Review: We go way back almost two decades. I've seen countless great shows in you. 15 years ago I would've given 5 stars, one of my favorite venues in the country. 10 years ago it would've slipped to 4 stars. 5 years ago 3 stars, but last night I wanted to give it 2 stars. After having cars broken in too many times, having to worry about being attacked yet again downtown, after shows that start way too late for working folks, after only accepting cash (in an area where you don't want to be walking around with cash), after having an ATM that charges you 3$ when you just need 10$, it was the faulty ATM with numerous glitches that finally broke me. For five minutes I tried about 15 times to get cash out, each time with a new different error. Probably because beer has been spilt on it countless times. So I gave up and then walked out for good, or at least it felt that way at the time (although who knows maybe I'll go back one day)... In that moment I gave you 2 stars, when really you haven't changed all that much. It's Portland that has changed. So Portland I give you 2 stars, compared to the 5 I gave you in the 2000's. Dante's I'll give you 4... Previous Review: The King Kahn and BBQ Show I think this was the last show we saw before COVID - 1/16/20. Though I prefer King Kahn with the Shrines (a much larger band and one of the best live shows I've ever seen) I still very much enjoy these guys. I think it's the third time I've seen them in almost 15 years. Kahn is a prolific and consistent garage rock songwriter that plays sloppy guitar. He's the John Belushi of his genre. This time he had two dancers dressed as skunks and along with that one girl jumped on stage from the audience and stripped, which we found out later was not planned,  so it was a pretty good night overall... read more

The bartender on staff Sept. 1 was awesome. I don't remember the name, but was super helpful for places to get food, drink, and other enter in the area. The actual establishment feels like a place you'd find a punk hangout spot in a cheesy 80s film (in a good way). Lot's of 80s punk and 90s grunge. Stickers behind the bar kick that vibe into high gear, and IT HAS GARGOYLES above the second bar over by Pizza Slut (which is also awesome. I went on two different nights, though I left Sinferno Cabaret early before the show; I did catch karaoke from hell the next night, and it was awesome. read more

Don't come here if you only want to drink or eat some Costco size pizza slices: a place like this, you bring positive energy, you will surely get it back! Great music and performance scene for late nights out if you catch the right people, lots of local attraction, plus a smoke shop and chevron for other addictive necessities for those of us with vices and virtue among the streets. I'm from Hollywood and love this vibe. Reminds me of a great old Hollywood clubs, and the "good old days" when music venues were cool and low key, but still with a lively mix of people. Drinks were good. Bathrooms dingy with a line, so don't try to hold it. It'll be awhile! Did not eat the pizza, but heard it was great. Only complaint was the drink line was sooooo long. My first experience with Dante's was for a karaoke night. There was a cover charge of like $2 but it was worth it for the fun I had. A friend and I were walking by and it looked like a good time so we impulsively decided to stop in and I'm SO glad we did! I instantly loved the set up and the vibe. We were really just waiting for my friend to have his turn to sing but ended up staying all night because we were having such a great time and everyone here (employees and customers both) was awesome. Drinks were perfect too. Recently I finally got to visit again but it was pretty early in the day, around 2pm. Originally I just needed to use the bathroom while I was out walking around and recognized the place so went in for that, but then felt it would be rude to leave without a drink so I grabbed a cider. They only had two options for hard cider but I liked what I got. They have an outside seating area (always important to me!), it's not huge but there's maybe 4 or 5 tables. It's enough room as long as you are comfortable with maybe having to share with a stranger or two. That's the fun part to me! The weather is nice so I spent maybe an hour here with my cider and talking to people. It was a good time and after my second visit I am convinced I need to make more of a point to get out here more often. Love it!! read more
