Easy little speakeasy! Bartender was very friendly and service was quick! We didn't eat here but we love eating at McMenamins, the food is always good. We grabbed a beer flight and a cider. When you first walk in, it looks pretty crowded and tight, but once you go through an alleyway, there's a bigger space with a stage where you can enjoy your drinks. Service: 4/5 - Even with the busy atmosphere and long lines, the bartenders were very nice and friendly. My only complaint is that there were only two bartenders working on Christmas night, so it took a really long time to get our drinks. Drinks: 3/5 - I was really excited to enjoy my drink in a cute themed cup, but unfortunately, they were all out. They were also out of the milk and cookies drink, which was disappointing. The menu was cute, but the drinks didn't sit well with me personally. Maybe I'm just not a fan of hot alcoholic drinks, but if you like espresso martinis or similar cocktails, you might enjoy the ones we tried: - Silk Top Hat - The Cat's Pajamas From their regular menu, we also ordered Oregon's Mule. Walked into this place unplanned since it was the only open spot and am SO happy I did! My husband doesn't drink and I only do it occasionally, so I really appreciated their mocktail menu - we each got one and they were great! The best part was we walked in 20 min before the comedy show in Al's Den, and were able to buy tix onesite last minute. The show was fantastic! So happy we ended up here, and will def be back next time we visit Portland. read more

The last time I was here, I left a review telling you about this gem. I left my description, but I felt that it didn't do it justice since I didn't leave pictures. It was once again close to closing time and once again it took the bartender 3 minutes to notice me before he asked me what I'd like to order. It must be a Portland thing. I don't know. I usually sit at the bar but there were 2 young ladies there with their bags taking up the remaining seats. I didn't want to bother them, so I stood there. For 3 minutes. Once I placed my order (Lagavulin 16 year-old) I looked for a really quiet spot and the one I found was as quiet and isolated as you could get- under the stairs that I came in. A quiet, cozy little nook that a new introvert like me could ask for. A small group of people came in and made some quick conversation with me and left for another bar. I paid my tab and left. Let me just start off by saying that this is one of the coolest bars I have ever been to. It can be found by going down a steep stairway that leads into a dark underground bar; decorated by Christmas lights & modern pieces, with couches and a sofa at the end of the right hand side of the bar. I essentially did not know what to order, so the bartender on site helped me pick. I asked them if they could recommend a really good cocktail that was on the sweeter side, and they recommended "Rocks by the river" or something like that. I don't quite recall the exact name, but I know it had watermelon juice and decorated with a Tajín rim. This definitely was my favorite cocktail I had had while on vacation in Portland. Overall, this underground speakeasy is such a unique and hidden gem. Everyone must go at least once in their lifetime! First off, how do I even begin to describe this place! Before you walk inside, it almost appears as if you've found a little gem underground and once you're inside, there's even MORE to explore! The walls are decorated with posters from events they've hosted with the performers signatures. The music fit the vibe perfectly that you'll be begging for whoever's playlist is playing! As for the drinks, I ordered a lavender refresher which is a mocktail but is just as good if you're not feeling anything alcoholic. My girlfriend ordered the butterfly effect and the salted caramel bourbon and both times she took her first sips, I could see an instant amazement of how good the drinks tasted! We also tried their jell-o shots which nearly tasted like straight jello treats! The bartender we had was really nice and welcoming. The bathrooms were clean and spacious. I arrived on 2/28/25 in the evening with two girlfriends. Hunter was the bartender and as my friends ordered, I said I'll have what she's having. He served them and refused to serve me!! He thought I had been drinking too much because I had been SLIGHTLY tired from an early morning of travel and while I stood behind my friends he said I nodded my head down and closed my eyes. What??? So that's illegal to rest my eyes for a second? I had arrived to see my friends at about 5pm and we had already taken an Uber out about 20 minutes to dinner, had a full meal, I had one glass of wine that night, danced for about 30 minutes and had another 20 minutes back to our hotel which was next to the restaurant. So my last and only drink was about an 90 minutes prior, I was talking perfectly clearly, no slurring and was a bit tired and was denied a drink with my friends. To say I was upset was an understatement and I let him know after he still wouldn't serve me with a perfectly acceptable explanation. We obviously left. We will NEVER be back, and I urge anyone who is slightly tired to throw a few toothpicks on their eyes to keep them WIDE open to make good and sure you don't slightly flinch with meditation, or disease that exhausts you. I have NEVER been declined a drink and this was unacceptable treatment. I had asked for a manager and he said he was the manager which I doubt. The funny thing was...my friends had been drinking all day off and on (still not drunk) but I was just joining in so I only had that one glass of wine in me which had already burned off. Ridiculous. Glad to have not spent my money at your establishment! AND...to make matters even more offensive, my husband and I are McMenamins Passport holders!! Don't bother spending your money on that either! I went to McMenamins Ringler's Annex before the Gracie Abrams concert. There's plenty of parking garages and street parking nearby. They weren't overly busy, and service was extremely slow. We waited to be sat for much longer than necessary. We also waited much longer to be served than was reasonable. They seemingly had plenty of staff working, but they weren't working cohesively or together. There wasn't a lot of awareness of restaurant traffic or the customer's needs. I opted for their bacon cheeseburger and Cajun tots along with a Rochester root beer. My friend chose their sliders and regular tots. The food was served in a timely fashion, and drink refills were generally prompt. The bacon cheeseburger was a bit underdone for my liking, and the bun was very soggy. The Cajun tots with peppercorn ranch didn't disappoint and were excellent. The Rochester root beer was delicious as well. Their restroom was clean and pretty well maintained. It was a good experience that could have been great if it weren't for some awareness and service issues. read more

Ringler's Annex was Very Cramped, Very hard to get service, Very uncomfortable to be here. We were directed to go downstairs to Al's Den right away so I have nothing really to review. Not a McMenamins vibe at all. Once we got downstairs to Al's Den, it was so bad we left. The staff was extremely rude and not thrilled about helping us. We were greeted with snotty attitudes and made to feel like we didn't belong down there. I was even shoved by an employee. I guess I was in his way. When we asked the bartender to stamp our passports she gave us the stink eye from hell. She was so inconvenienced it hurt. It sounded like she was forced to recite a long memorized paragraph that she was absolutely sick of doing. NOT what we expect from a McMenamins establishment. December 2017: Came here because we heard about the free comedy. We didn't expect much but were surprised when we were able to find a seat and enjoy. The bar was really busy and at first we didn't know if we were at the right place. We had to walk down some stairs and I thought, how cool basement. And then we kept walking past the first bar and in another room there it was comedy. Most people were respectful and stayed quiet and listened. This is a really fun semi-hidden bar and venue! We came in around 9pm on a Saturday and it was packed. You enter by going down a set of stairs underneath a restaurant and find yourself in a main bar. It is dark and has a speakeasy/cellar/cave vibe. You can hang out there if you want to talk to your friends or continue to the back room. When we first arrived there was a really fun band playing that was all about getting the audience engaged. We loved it! At 10:30 a comedy show began and the comedy was on the strange side so we weren't really into it. There was only one server for the whole back room so I felt terrible for him. It took a while to get his attention, our drinks, and the check. But you can't blame him for that, they just need more staff. They serve food which we didn't try and the cocktails were strong and tasty. I might even call this a hidden gem. read more

We asked a guy at Powell's for a Happy Hour recommendation. He suggested this place and another one that we popped in first, but didn't care for the smell of it. Here we plopped down right at the bottom of the stairs and had a charming Server Gal, who was especially patient with me trying to decide what wine I wanted. I quickly learned that chardonnay is not a Pacific Northwest thing! Switched to a red and it was just fine. Meanwhile, Husband went with a Bourbon Peach Sour for just $8 and liked it very much. For Happy Hour, they have a menu from Zeus Cafe upstairs. Having had enough fried stuff recently, we opted to forgo the tempura veggies for a Mini Smoked Brisket Slider and a Mini Water Buffalo Burger at the happy hour price of $4 each. Good thing we weren't starving because they took a really long time. About 25 minutes. When they arrived, I took one look at the brisket one with the fat hanging out of it and knew Husband had inherited it completely. He was happy to oblige, and let me have the mini burger to myself, which was quite tasty. He managed to do in the brisket but wasn't thrilled with all the fat either. At least it was small. Cool little downstairs bar /pub, came here on a Friday night to celebrate my last night in Portland with some close friends. Not a ton of seating at all in this place so it can get crowded/ you might have to wait for a table. Luckily one opened up right when we got there. Man do I love Portland's night life - my friends and I ordered our own respective drinks (this place has standard stuff for everyone - whether you like wine, beer, cocktails, etc.) We brought in Phase 10 (card game) to play and stayed pretty late, we had good service all around. I like the small intimate space of the bar, it's not so loud that you have to shout at your friends. There's live music in the back area, and it's a nice spot if you're looking for an intimate setting for a date that isn't super dive bar-like or clubby. The only thing that I wouldn't recommend is bringing a really large group here if you're trying to rage, it's more of a kick back and relax with your 2-3 friends after a long work week type place. So this place is actually a super chill little hole in the ground under the back half of the Zeus Café. There's a large nook of a space that's great for a small group to play some board games or just hang out, and the bar seating is always clean and neat. Coming (CAREFULLY) down the entry stairs you can see that the bar is true to the typical Mcmenamins style, that classic old look, if not a little rustic, and with a whimsical flair.
