Scary-looking outside where you stand in line. Exterior looks decrepit. There was a strong smell of pot outside, and it was very smoky inside as well (though some of that may have been part of the special effects). The crowd is cool, though. I am not certain why I had never been to the Holocene previously. I remember it having events or shows I was into but I was grateful I got tickets in advance because it did sell out. Cthulhu, The Musical and done with puppets. The group is called Puppeteers for Fears which was a very unique experience and such fun. Having never been here I was so nervous since I am ADA and getting in and out of anything is complicated so I try to ask in advance. They just said to let them know when coming in and they would help me out. Parking around here is great and I found a great spot immediately a block from the venue. The door folks were super friendly and the second I said ADA they were ON IT... All of the staff treated me like a princess which was amazing. As someone with ADA needs, I get used to just trying to stay out of the way or not have people bouncing into me, causing me pain or inflammation. That can be very challenging, mentally and physically. They set up a chair right next to the stage, had me enter through the backstage and the manager brought me fancy drinks all night. I got a few looks when I had a fancy cocktail in one hand, my fancy fan in the other and a cozy seat and was the only person with a seat. The whole venue is really great! There are a bunch of seating spaces in the main with the stage area in it's own sort of room. I was almost surprised because it is really a nice space. read more

This place is awesome and its events are genuinely so inventive and fun! but oh my do not expect things to go like a normal concert venue. Bought a scalper ticket on stubhub to Ninajirachi for over $200 and they wouldn't accept it because it was a resale ticket?! I sat outside all night just listening to the show. We got tickets for free entry before 10pm and got there at 9pm. We were waiting in line for an hour and a half (our tickets were no longer valid at this point and we had to pay to get in). When we got inside, we saw that there were not enough people to justify the line moving so slowly, so this is clearly a tactic by the business to get more people to pay. I've been to Holocene three times now. Or so my wife tells me. I don't remember the second one at all. Probably the result of being blackout drunk. Actually, I think I've been pretty hammered every time I've left Holocene, so I'm surprised I remember any of my visits at all! Holocene's a weird place. It has a lot of things going for it, but many of its advantages are squandered by the people running it; particularly, the bartenders and DJs. Their respective skillsets range from eminently competent, to egregiously, laughably terrible. Let's start at the bar. On this most recent visit, we attended the Halloween night dance party, supposedly themed after the Bronze bar from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. How that theme manifested basically boiled down to blurry projections of scenes from the series playing out on the walls, and a smattering of overpriced themed cocktails that suspiciously continued to shrink over the course of the night. For example, the first Mr. Pointy drink I ordered came in a tall glass; the second in a clear, disposable, red-Solo-cup knockoff; the third, in a tiny, clear cup you'd find in the dispenser attached to your office's water cooler. Unfortunately, the price did not shrink along with the diminishing containers they were served in. Next, let's talk about the music. Having arrived shortly after the party started, most of the music was an eclectic grab bag of random tracks from the 90s; a cornucopia of dissonant genres, none of which were dance-able. I vividly recall "Trigger Happy Jack" by 90's darling of electronica, Poe, followed shortly thereafter by a remix of Cher's "Believe", and then Enya, of all fucking things. And if that's not enough aural violation for you, the music abruptly stopped (cue record scratch!) around 9:30, allowing for a local indie band to butcher several of my favorite, nostalgic rock and metal classics of the last three decades, for the next 45 minutes. My wife and I ducked out and headed over to Morrison Market, lamenting that the music we'd heard emanating from there, as we passed by on our way to enter Holocene, was light years better than what we were enduring in here. We ended up returning to finish out the night at Holocene, when the music actually became digestible to people with working ear drums, and to lose the costume contest to half-assed cosplayers gallivanting around in cheap, and questionable, Buffy-"inspired" wardrobe selections. Bleh. Look, I get it. I'm an old man playing a young man's game, holding on to the fading flower of my youth with a white-knuckled grip that is slowly choking the life out of the very thing I'm trying to preserve. It also sounds like I am relentlessly tearing Holocene down, but I promise you, I'm not. I like it here, or else I wouldn't keep coming back. But there is definitely an unhealthy, abusive, love-hate relationship between us. My feelings for Holocene are eerily similar to those I share for the Hawthorne Theater: my absolute favorite music venue, that I also hate with a fiery passion, because I know how great it *can* be. Just like Holocene. Sometimes you walk away happy, drunk, having had the time of your life. Other times, you wake up on the floor of the mosh pit, trampled half to death. The only difference between these two experiences seems to boil down to the quality of the music, the competence of the bartenders, and the presence of a DJ that has an actual ear for dance music. First of all, this place gets all the stars for security and bar service. I had some problems, and security resolved it. Also, there were no creepy dudes trying to dance or anything else. So you can at least dance and be left alone (if that's what you desire). I came for Club Blush night, and that gets no stars. Don't come here for Club Blush expecting to hear electronic music. Like other reviewers have said, your Spotify playlist would do a better job. The DJ obviously researched the hottest electronic music, and played mostly only Rufus du Soul, Odesza, and Sofi Tukker. Now you might think, Odesza, that's a plus yeah? Not if both songs played were the instrumentals. Same with Sofi Tukker, who plays the instrumental version? The DJ would hype the crowd up and then fall flat. There were also a few dead air moments, on top of some hip hop/top 40 music for a supposed EDM night. Thanks in most part to the reviews, I went in expecting to be treated like riff raff, especially since I don't fit in with the "hipster" scene. However, I ended up having a really smooth and fun experience. From the doorman with the beard (I think he had red hair) to both of the male and female bartenders, I never once felt like I was being treated inferior. And again, I do not fit in with the hipster esthetic, so I don't think that had anything to do with it. The event I attended introduced me to three awesome new bands whom I would've never encountered otherwise. The room that holds the stage area isn't that big, so be prepared to literally step on some toes when trying to get around. I tried the photo booth ($5) and I loved it! All in all, I would definitely come back to this establishment. Especially since the crowd was so laid back and chill, which compared to other bars I've been to was unusual in itself. Ordered: Lime Slush- a very sweet slushie type drink with just a hint of alcohol coming through. Great drink for lightweights like myself. Claire's Knees- I personally felt more of the alcohol in this one than the Lime Slush, but it was still sweet enough to where my throat didn't feel like it was in fire. Safety: Again, maybe it was the event, but I wasn't groped or harassed at all. Service: The female bartender was great, she suggested drinks for a foreign friend of mine and acknowledged us every time without me having to scream and holler for her. I've always appreciated this place for it's nice vibes, delicious drinks and almost after party/art gallery vibes. You can walk in any night and discover something interesting. Yikes. I hate leaving negative reviews, but I gotta be real here. My partner and I came to Holocene for the first time on a Friday night for Dance Yourself Clean. We had heard positive things about this event. I was under the impression that it featured indie pop/EDM. I am a huge fan of all sorts of beat-driven synth pop, electronica, and EDM--Phantogram, Disclosure, Carly Rae Jepsen, The Weeknd, Sofi Tukker, Friendly Fires, Daft Punk, Grimes--so this sounded appealing to me. I was excited to shake my booty to some alternative dance tunes. We arrived at around 9:30pm. The music was LOUD, but not danceable. I chalked it up to it being early in the night. By 10pm, the place was packed, and a sea of beautiful young white people danced to music that was still lackluster and missing a discernable beat. At one point, the crowd went wild when MGMT's "Kids" started blaring out of the speakers. "Kids" is not a dance song, and the version that played was not even a remix--why on Earth would a DJ choose this? If you really want to play MGMT to maintain your ~hipster cred~ or whatever, why not "Electric Feel" or "She Works Out Too Much"? At least those songs have groovy basslines. I'm sorry, but the DJ was truly awful and honestly made me consider quitting my day job. Lord knows if I was DJing an event like this, my song choices would be more inspired. We stuck around until midnight, hoping in vain that the music would improve and we would, y'know, start to have fun and DANCE. Alas, Tove Lo's "disco tits" was the only decent song that played during the entire two and a half hours we were there. One good dance song in TWO AND A HALF HOURS. Ugh. The bartenders were friendly, and the drinks were average both in taste and price. The light show was also attractive. So, I guess there was that? Based on my experience, Holocene seems to be made exclusively for people who meet the following criteria: young, wealthy, white, hipster, and lacking rhythm. If that describes you, maybe you'll enjoy what Holocene has to offer. For my money, the DJ sucked and I was bored. I left with ears ringing and without having danced myself clean. We are here for 2000's hip hop night and they've been playing drake, Kendrick and a Bunch of obscure r&b from like the 90's. It is 1:14 am and the dance floor is empty because the DJ's are playing songs no one knows. Early 2000 bangers are easy, there are so many songs to play. Also came here on drake night and they played drake for about 20 minutes. Drake has hits and features to last 2+ hours. They curate some absolutely fantastic house shows here. Ross from Friends, Jessy Lanza, Jacques Green, DJ Boring and so many more. They have a great set up with 2 stages allowing for quick transitions between acts. The ventilation seems improved too making for a comfortable night even in the summer. I went here for a concert on Halloween weekend. The drinks were good, the service friendly and timely, and the sound/video was amazing. Lots of room to dance, dark lighting, and everyone wore a mask--even though everyone showed vaccination to get in and they weren't required. If I could give a negative rating, I absolutely would. Tonight I spent 45 minutes in line with a group of 10 people. When we got to the front, a security guard did not let allow one of my friends to enter. I had asked why, she advised "because I said so." With out an explanation of cause, why and how. Keep in mind this conversation was less than 10 seconds. I work in insurance and understand if there is negligence. But when a staff says "because I said so." As an excuse to refuse people in Holocene is disrespectful and a horrible way to run a business. To think we waited for 45 minutes in line, in a bat of an eye my friend was not allowed into the event is absolutely ridiculous. Well, actually, I've only been here once and honestly the ol' dancey dancey scene can vary from event to event and night to night, so let me qualify that: I highly recommend Gaycation. Unless you hate gay people, in which case you probably don't deserve fun ANYway, so you should just stay home and eat moldy waffles or whatever it is lame people do to get their rocks off. I actually had been assiduously avoiding Holocene because, well: "Hollow" + "Scene" = "Holocene." I mean that just doesn't sound like a good time, amirite? But all that changed when I won some tickets to Gaycation. I'm a sucker for free stuff, so I dragged my recovering-from-flu butt and my posse full of reluctant scenesters out with me, including a few straight folks who wondered if they should wear assless chaps (Answer: Only if you want to, but I'm thinking leather attire is a bad plan with all that sweating). I forced us all to get there early (9pm). The place was TOTALLY DESERTED, which was slightly spooky, but gave us ample time to thoroughly explore and stake out a table with a view of everything. There's a sunken dance floor with tables lined up along the front windows, a main bar on the mid-level, and a room that has a big ol' disco ball and stage and cash bar that overlooks the whole thing. Also there's some kind of VIP-looking room by the bathrooms, a photobooth (yay!) and a coat rack (WHICH IS AWESOME AND NECESSARY). Anyway. We got some drinks, which were terrible. About an hour later people started streaming in, and what do you know the next time we turn around it's PACKED and everyone's dancing. People are dancing in line to the bars. People have climbed on to the stage to dance. The dance floor is packed and jumping. I'm dancing right along with all these sticky bodies, and sweating the curl out of my hair and the eyeliner off my eyeballs. Such a nice change from the usual half-hearted scenester swaying or the equally dishearteningly prevalent skankariffic booty dance. These folks were clearly enjoying themselves and didn't care what anyone else thought. No stranger to not-giving-a-fuck, I joined 'em and will definitely be back for more. Points for improvement: - Those drinks really were awful. I mean SERIOUSLY. I am a rum enthusiast, and my rum n coke made me make a sour face. Either drink before you go, order something brand-specific, bring a flask, or go sober. - The (terrible) drinks were also kinda spendy, which is not unusual for dancey places. But fair warning. - Ventilation: There is something to be said for dancing so hard in a room completely packed full of other people dancing so hard that you all start to pour sweat down your glittery, luxurious man-rugs and ladylike decolletage, but sweet bejeezus it was hot. This club is five stars entertainment-wise but it's downfalls are pretty damn annoying in my book so it's a full two star deduction for this review. First , the good. Great music, great variation in events they have from Gaycation to Bollywood to Snap 90's and such. For so many clubs in the area that just seems to enjoy playing garbage, it was a breath of fresh air. Onto the bad. First off - snooty door man. The guy with the clicker (who was counting if there were too many people) would occasionally stick his head out and walk around outside and do NOTHING. Then he'd spot some friends and completely ignore the 25+ people that had already been waiting to get in and let them in. Are we in New York? Is there a list here that I missed? I hate that kind of behavior with a passion. If it's at capacity, you wait in line - I don't give a rat's hiney if you know the door guy. Second - and this is a big bad. Just try and get a drink. I dare you. I'll wait...yeah, look at that line and look how understaffed the bar itself in. Clearly Holocene is busy - look at the line. Please, staff for it. And when you staff for it, don't staff jerks. I want a drink I want to give you money for said drink. Why are you making me feel dumb about it!? *also I believe the minimum on running a card here is $20 which is a) lame and b) against most credit card company agreements. Holocene is one of the best places to get your dance on in Portland. Being on the east side beats Old Town where there are more clubs and lounges, but at least one of the mini perks is being closer to late night eats at the Montage (http://www.yelp.com/biz/le-bistro-montage-portland). Out of all of the places in Portland, I'd rather come here than venture out to Old Town anytime. Being lucky here means getting cheap cover or none at all. Since it's an old warehouse there is plenty of space and surprisingly good ventilation. Though the music will vary throughout the night, the range is typically hip hop to mainstream dance hits. It seems there are a lot of hipsters here, but that might just be the general crowd in Portland. That also means I didn't see much eye candy here either. The parking is super iffy, since the area is a bit sketchy at night. Try to park closer to Morrison where there are actual street lights. Speaking of cheap, the drinks need their own special shout out. On some weeknights there are happy hour specials which carry over into the weekend. With bartenders being super cool overall, it's easy to get carried away with the booze here. I know this place also doubles as a concert venue, I can totally imagine how this place would be perfect for that, albeit sporting a small crowd. Another cool bonus is the complimentary water cooler for the drunkards and thirsty folk. Don't want to dance? Just lounging and hanging out here is also an option. There is probably the only major multifaceted venue in the area where you can go about your night any way you want. read more

And then rolls his eyes. He was a total dick. I ordered a extra dirty vodka martini and he did not put any olive juice in it....however he did not miss a step when dumping vermouth into the cup. The club was filled with 21 year old kids, the lower dance floor felt like jail bait while the upper dance floor was empty and nobody wanted to dance at all. Well, let's start by saying going to this place last night was not my idea. Mostly because I figured it wasn't going to be my thing. But I decided to have an open mind. First, let's say I must have been the oldest one in there but I pushed past that. It's a great place for acoustics because it's an old warehouse. They have one room that is dedicated to the band with a dance floor area. When you first walk in they have a bar and some tables and also some tables around the dance floor up front. We got a drink at the bar and got settled in. We bought tickets for $13 to see three groups. They each do one abbreviated show but for the price it is totally right. My bf (we affectionately refer to him as the Young Stud (YS) decided he wanted to see Glasser. So, he bought the tickets on line and convinced me to go. The first band started up and we elected to stay at our tables in the other room he went and peeked in a couple of times at the band and the room was SRO. It started early in the evening with not many people in the place but as it got closer to the main billed event it began filling up. We were lucky in that, Glasser was playing second. When she came on the YS went and checked her out a bit. I hung on to the table and would briefly check out the action. I liked the fact we could hang out in the other room and still hear everything going on. The speakers were loud and plentiful. In fact, I, at one point, went to the bathroom and placed toilet paper in my ears (I know, uncool but I hear for a living so I thought my career was worth it) It was very cool and an experience I probably wouldn't have attempted if it weren't for the YS, so I thought it was worthwhile. I appreciated the water cooler and glasses in case you were done drinking for the night or as I might imagine on other nights much dancing going on and the need to hydrate. So honestly I'm not one to leave bad reviews, but I'm baffled tonight. My friends and I went to have a good time to tonight, but they threatened to kick me out if they saw me with another drink? I ordered one beer? Is it because I'm wearing a Hawaiian shirt? I'm very confused. I've attended many emo nites here before but they've progressively gotten worse. In addition to the venues lack of response on the matter I am now getting complaints from Yelp wanting to tone police me because someone's ego is bruised. Direct communication would be great, but again it's clear that Holocene in no way cares about their patrons. I do not rescind any of the above comments and the venue should step up its game. Poor management. People too afraid to confront the poor practices. Once again, Holocene is a waste of time. read more
