For context the stylist I've been to for years is based in Baltimore and with how traffic can get I can't justify spending 40% of my saturday going to Baltimore to get my hair done. So I began the search looking for a new hairstyle salon. Tried Alexandria, Springfield, even Fairfax. But none have provided what I need and certainly not justifiable of the price it commanded. So I tried HairSocial because I found it on Google and I liked I can book online. My hair appointment consists of the following: Wash, Blow Dry, and an undercut. Sometimes I'll get it flat-ironed depending on the occasion. So I booked 4 days in advance and when I arrived for my appointment I had to wait 20 mins after my actual time (for context it was a Sunday afternoon and no one else was in the shop except for one customer). When I was seated I was only given a haircut and nothing else despite asking for a hair wash and a blowout. Considering I had to put a downpayment online to book the appointment I naturally felt bamboozled. They offered to do what I originally asked but they said I had to wait an hour. I didn't have time as I had a family dinner I had to attend so I decided to go home and wash my own hair. Before I left, the front desk offered to refund me on my card and then said no and could only offer me a credit. The credit was tied to my account yet the credit isn't available when you book online you can only access the credit if you call to set up an appointment. Extremely disappointed but the stylist did a great job with my haircut. I'm just disappointed that I didn't get what I paid for at a reasonable time. Thankfully the management of the loc in Tysons Corner set things right and as a result despite this location being closer to me I go out of my way to visit the HairSocial in Tyson's Corner (that review will be coming shortly).

Looking at Instagram and FB pictures, I was immediately impressed with her artistry. What gave me pause is that I'm African American with porous natural hair that has a tight curl pattern. None of the pictures showed hair like mine. But what motivated me to contact Sarah was her commitment to continued education and serious interest in the health of her clients' hair. After exchanging a few text messages, I went in for a consultation. Based on the health of my hair, she recommended cellophane color as well as protein conditioning. Sarah managed to squeeze me into her schedule in a way that also accommodated several conference calls. Bottom line- Sarah did a wonderful job. The color looks great. My hair feels much healthier. She had to blow it out in order to cut it, so I elected to keep the straight style. My experience was much better than the last Black salon that I last went to and it's the best blow out that I've ever had. She managed the heat so that my hair wasn't fried. No smell of burning hair. I definitely plan to return.

This soured the experience for me and left me with picking up the entire $750 cost while I'm already dealing with high costs of treatment (my insurance would have reimbursed me half the cost of the wig). Disappointing considering she markets herself as supporting education for wig care in cancer patients.

In the future I hope she confirms with clients if she is not sure before going in there balls deep. I was willing to show more photos. I am someone who doesn't go to a salon often, so this was really special to me and I wanted my hair to look nice. Shana seems very well experienced, but when I told her how I would like my hair done she seemed frustrated (it was her first time working on my hair, I was not trying to offend her in any way, I just know my hair and how it works). I told her that my hair gets very frizzy and curls form after a day if I only blow dry, so I usually have to put a flat iron to my hair in order for it to stay put. Most of my appointment was quiet, she barely talked to me and she seemed very annoyed. When I told her about how my hair curls and gets frizzy, she snapped at me and said "i know how to do hair, i've been doing it for X amount of years". I stayed silent for the rest of my visit, paid, and left. The next day my curls returned (as I expected) and I felt like I paid that money for nothing. I would of loved the experience if she had listened to me, I was not trying to tell her how to do her job, but I knew it was her first time working on my hair and thought she would appreciate me letting her know how my hair works. The salon is beautiful and offers many services, but the attitudes there need to be a little better. I'm a hijabi and I liked this salon since it is hijab-friendly (one of the very few in my area), but I feel because of this experience it'll be so awkward if I go back to her.
