I was very nervous at first but, Paul listen to what I wanted and executed everything perfectly I had very long curly hair. And I really wanted to have a short haircut up to my shoulders. I've been here a few times, and honestly, I've always left feeling disappointed and confused. The main haircuts usually turn out fine, but my bangs are a different story. Before I came here, they were beautifully thin and wispy, but every single time they've cut them extremely thick with a big bump at the top. I'm not super picky about my hair, but it just looked bad. I clearly asked for thin, wispy bangs with rounded ends at the start of my appointment, but I walked out looking like someone's grandmother. I even politely asked the stylists to thin them out after the first cut, but there's only so much you can do when they've cut too much. A friendly neighborhood salon! I tried multiple salons before finding Paul Michaels, but others were often too busy, trendy, impersonal, or disorganized. Paul and his staff are personable and down-to-earth, efficient, appropriately priced, and I really liked my highlights and haircut. I use a wheelchair and the salon is also accessible (slight challenge parking but otherwise easy). And his other customers were friendly too...always a good sign! I got an amazing hair coloring and cut here! My hair was totally damaged from a year of bright coloring but Paul brought my hair back to it's dark brown color just in time for my brothers wedding. I had light blonde balayage with natural black on top and he transformed my hair to a pretty brown all over. I also got a hair cut that made my hair look so voluminous. I am a happy customer. It was easy to find the place and book appointment. There is free parking. I am usually a difficult customer, but Paul made its wonderful job and I was happy. I'm so very happy about my experience! I had a balayage that had since grown out and turned a little brassy. For context, I have thin asian hair and I was going for a blended ash balayage. It's always tough finding someone who lifts the color to get the look you want. Pauls expertise and experience was so appreciated. Horrible. They charged my mom almost 3x the price on the website for a hair gloss (listed as $35, charged 90). They also charged me $285 for auburn lowlights and a messy trim after the stylist Jocelyn dyed my roots firetruck red. She was helping three clients at once, so my hair over processed by 30 minutes! From the color I had chosen, she shouldn't have needed to use bleach at all, but still lightened my roots. Paul was there, saw the awful roots and how Jocelyn made excuses and attempted to cover them with more color (burned my scalp), and did nothing about it. My $70 "haircut" had also missed some large spots, and I had to fix it myself. I do not recommend this place at all. THEN... my mom called to politely tell him that we were very upset because this happened right before a wedding, and he refused to admit that he or Jocelyn did anything wrong, and was incredibly rude to her! read more

First of all I would like to say I dont like to leave bad reviews but when it comes to my hair, if Im paying for a salon to do what I ask , then I would hope that I get what I pay for. The reason I chose this salon was for 3 reasons. 1. Great reviews 2. Close to my family so it gives me an excuse to visit and 3. Great price. I have natural black hair and I have been going to this salon for light brown hair and both times were satisfactory. The reason why is I say satisfactory is because after a few washes the hair dye starts to fade and my grays start appearing again so the brand they use is not great for grays. So i go for highlights this last time and show them the picture (below). Its the trendy ring lighting highlights. Basically light brown hair with face framing highlights with some balayage highlights towards the end of hair. The end result pictures say it all and needless to say its not at all what I asked for. After 3 hrs my hair had almost platinum blond highlights (not pictured). They darkened my base so I literally looked like a skunk. I was horrified and wanted to cry so I was promised the highlights would be fixed to a more warmer color and the pictures below is what I got. By the time i left i had spent almost 5 hrs with okay hair (if someone wants old school highlights l) but it was still not at all what I asked for. I left with brassy highlights on the top portion of my hair and ashy blonde lights on the bottom half. I was charged FULL price and told to come back again to fix my hair. Not a good move if your customer is not 100% satisfied with their hair. I had hopes for this place. I legit finished a pint of rocky road ice cream thats how bummed out I was. read more

I showed them a few pictures and I was so amazed because my hair turned out exactly what I imagined and even better then the picture! I got my hair a cut, color, and highlights. I visited recently for a trim, deep conditioning, and color. I called ahead for an appointment although walk-ins are welcome. This is an open, clean, and relaxed location. I have had several different folks assist me and each has been nice and done a good job. We all have things we are self-conscious about -- for me it is the scars and indentations on my head resulting from a couple of brain surgeries. I think one of the reasons I like this place is I don't feel like a spectacle when I am serviced here. I know it is unusual but really it just means I need you to aware of the wholes and scars and my heat and pressure sensitivity in those spots. They seem to get that and that matters to me. Well, that and the fact that I like how my hair looks after I visit. Everyone I have worked with here listens to my requests and is interested in giving me a hair style I like and that works well for me. Feeling comfortable and leaving (& staying) satisfied makes me a fan! The thing to know and my biggest issue is I ALWAYS miss the turn and have to maneuver my way back to this hidden little strip mall that is set back from the road and obstructed by a couple of stand alone spots near by. Perhaps eventually I will catch the turn on my first passing... hope springs eternal. read more

I have been going to Paul Michaels Salon to see Dino who cuts my hair. I have been getting my hair cut by Dino since 1987 when I lived in Rocky Hill. I live in Manchester, Connecticut now, have never found stylists as good as Dino and the elite stylists at Paul Michaels. When I get my hair cut I know my hair is in expert hands and know it will come out looking PERFECT every single time! When you find someone you know and trust you keep going to that person and remain loyal to them. Dino has made me look good and kept me looking good through the years and I can't imagine ever going anyplace else or to anyone else. Getting ready the week before my daughter's wedding included scheduling conflicts so we went to Paul Michael's hair salon for the first time based on great reviews online. That was a mistake. My hair cut was excellent. We asked the stylist for a color gloss which she said did not exist. After consulting with the owner, the stylist practiced her first color gloss on my hair and did a good job, BUT then I was charged as if the owner had done the work - not the web site listed price for that level of stylist. Even when challenged on the price, the salon was adamant about charging expert level stylist rates. My daughter had a sweet but overworked girl doing her roots and lowlights. She gave her what looked like a red skunk streak down the center of her head from ignoring the time, then had no empathy for the bride-to-be. It took the owner's consultation (also without empathy) to determine a correction and over an hour more of time in the chair as well as chemical burn pain from the second root treatment. For that, the salon charged the full price of all the work as if the owner had done the work. When called later to object to the treatment by his salon, the owner argued repeatedly that they had charged the correct amounts without any supporting justification of the certification level of the stylists. Worse, he never showed empathy for the distress of my daughter's experience or the pain involved in the second dye job. read more

Ive gone to this salon twice- the first time was fantastic with the owner and he is amazing! He really listens to what you want and definitely delivers. The second time- it was a female hair stylist- I told her I wanted a few inches off my hair but then have some long layers to the front to add volume. She gave me short layers, even after I told her I dont want my hair to look short multiple times. I reached the point of desperation with several months of no hair appointments, and my shorter haircut had reached a particularly unfortunate stage when I decided it was time for a professional haircut intervention. The salon I had used previously was closing due to the pandemic, and so I found Paul Michaels Salon through online reviews, since I am newer to the area. Thank goodness I did! Paul immediately grasped what I wanted to get my hair back on track, and he executed the cut with speed and precision. I was reassured that all staff were wearing masks, and the various stations had separators, plus Paul used hand sanitizer prior to styling my hair. I would give the first hairdresser 1 star for not following any instructions, especially when they were crucially important to the client, and overcharging for the service. I am not posting it above b/c I do not want to hurt the business at first glance (some people just look at stars before reading further reviews), and because the owner acted understanding to our frustrations. Here's what went down: My daughter went here to cut her medium length into a pixie cut last year, which the hairdresser did, so she had no complaints with that experience. (This is her first experience choosing a salon--based on convenience of location--and paying for it herself.) She realized that this style did not work for her as she was mistaken for a boy all the time at work, so she had to start wearing a lot of makeup, which she didn't want to do. So she started the slow, long process of regrowing her hair out. After several months, it had grown long enough to start adjusting, so she went the other day, after her hair had grown a little past the base of the neck, to simply have it reshaped, as the lower part lay close to her neck contour but the top part was full and round, so it was imbalanced. She was adamant about telling the hairdresser (whose name I will not disclose because I do not want to hurt her client base) that she wanted to reshape away the roundness, explaining that she not lose any length because of having often been mistaken for a boy from the previous length. The instructions were somehow interpreted to mean for the hairdresser to cut off all the length, making the hair shape shorter and rounder---everything my daughter emphasized that she didn't want. Her response to assure my 18-year-old daughter, who was in shock, was, "My mom does her hair like this all the time." My daughter was too polite to say anything, but cried for over an hour afterwards. On top of it, the hairdresser charged a full $50 to basically lop off the length my daughter waited so long to grow. I usually do not come in to complain, but I had to go in to speak to the manager the next day, asking for a refund. After chit-chatting with a client, he finally came to speak to me and said that they didn't do refunds but that he would fix it for her. I really didn't want to do any business with them further, but there were clients present so I didn't want to bring attention to the dispute. I asked my daughter to come in from the car. The owner did a few snips to thin it - what my daughter asked for and what the previous hairdresser should have been able to do. Except it was still super-short. She now looked like a young boy rather than a middle-aged woman. (Thank goodness she does not yet have a Yelp account to see this.) We just accepted the fate and left afterwards. I think it would have been fair to have given us a refund as the damage was done with the hair being cropped off against her wishes. 3 stars is generous b/c the owner was nice, but I would not recommend this place. read more

Gotta love Paul! Hes been cutting my hair for years now and I would not change him for any other hair stylist! He cuts exactly the way you want it! If you want a centimeter off he will only cut a centimeter.. even then still leaves your hair feeling super healthy and new again! He knows exactly what you want and how to do it!
