    Mazemen Ramen Dinner
    Kylie D.

Came here for dinner with a couple coworkers for dinner on a Monday. The interior was decently decorated and apparently there is a bar upstairs with a wide selection. We were seated immediately and all ordered mazemen with some skewers and they got some drinks. The service was friendly and fast but the food itself was unimpressive. The skewers were drenched in some kind of liquidy sauce that made them soggy instead of the classic glaze that Japanese skewers should come with, although I've also had skewers with no sauce at all that were better. The mazemen had WAY too much oil -- the noodles were basically swimming in it like it was a soup. Mazemen means mixed noodles, so the noodles should come with just a bit of oil to mix and coat them with, not enough to drink! I got the vegetarian version and the tofu was plain and appeared uncooked, like they had just tossed some plain tofu on top without doing anything to it, no marinating or pan frying or anything. It was all very disappointing.

K.F.C. with buffalo sauced cauliflower. Really yummy.

I wish I'd reviewed Dashi the first time we dined here. That night, it was a 4 star experience. Really good food and great service, though the upstairs space was crowded and loud. This visit, however, was completely lackluster. We drove 2+ hours and got there just as they were opening (11:30am on a Friday). Or. Should have been opening. At 11:35, still not open so we took a little walk. 11:40am. Not open. Finally, at 11:50am the hostess/server opened the door. The was a very distinct smell that filled the vestibule and it was a complete turnoff. Also, they do not serve izakaya at lunch and apparently no cocktails either (beer, wine & sake are available). As for the food, it was very good. We started with the chilled edamame; that hint of citrus was so unexpected (even though it was listed on the menu, lol). We also had the K.F.C, which featured cauliflower and was sauced with what tasted like buffalo sauce. YUM. MY. I had the Shoyu ramen and added more mushrooms. There was a TON of pork in that bowl. My husband had the Shio (no picture, alas) and the broth was really light. The noodles were also good. So we do recommend the food but I don't know that we'll be back.

We went to Dashi before a DPAC show with a small group and it was the perfect meal! Some of the best ramen in the triangle and all the appetizers were delicious. Our server was extremely kind and quick so we had zero complaints. For a group meal, it was fairly well priced too. We hope to come back soon!

Just want to say that Dashi continues have delicious food and great service. It's now one of the must haves in Durham!

We came here during restaurant week and definitely felt it was a great deal for 3 courses! We made a reservation online a few days before and were seated immediately. We started with 2 different types of dumplings, kimchi & pork and veggie dumplings. They came out hot, fresh and crispy! And absolutely delicious and both had great flavor. they both came with chili sauce to dip with but it was not spicy. This was my favorite course of the meal. For the second course, we ordered the tonkatsu ramen, which in my opinion, was only alright. It was pretty salty and didn't have much flavor. The pork was big and the best part of the ramen for me! The portion was pretty big and we took the remainder to go. Lastly, we ordered the yuzu cake, which was sadly a huge disappointment. It tasted just like a dry, plain pound cake and had no yuzu flavor whatsoever. Our waitress was nice and attentive and kindly packaged our food to go.

Went for dinner and asked to sit upstairs for a better environment, excellent choice. The bar is very cozy and has excellent whiskey choices. Had the Veggie dumplings and KFC for starters, cauliflower were a big hit at the table. Ordered Miso, Mazeman, and Tonkatsu. All enjoyed. Would go back, highly recommend for authentic ramen. Noise volume was comfortable for conversations.

The food was so good and the service was fast. I will definitely come again! The only downside is that the restaurant is really dark but still an enjoyable experience.

I tried Dashi with my roommate last night with a reservation in place. We liked the concept but less so the food. As we stepped in, our eyes took a bit to adjust to the dark lighting and we struggled to see the menus. The seating was very dim, but spacious enough that we could sit comfortably. I didn't love that I could overhear the table next to us. We shared a takoyaki hushpuppy starter and enjoyed it. I thought that it had a good balance of savory and sweet. However, the ramen that I ordered (shio) and my roommate ordered (tonkatsu) didn't have that great balance- it was much too salty to our tastes. We also both wished there was more broth in the soup! The ramen felt unauthentic and a bit high of a price point. I'd come back for the ambiance and the starters.

I found this place on Yelp and decided to try it for lunch. Unfortunately, it wasn't a great experience. The staff seated us in the darkest part of the restaurant. I had to use the flash on my phone just to take a photo of my food because it was so hard to see. On top of that, my food arrived cold. Overall, this was the least enjoyable ramen I've had so far.

Went here a few times but the most recent is for the New Years Omasake dinner. I love the decor of this restaurant, it's like you are transported to Japan. The service was really good. They are able to explain all the dishes on the menu and they tell fun stories about the dish. For example when describing the drinks they told us how the have a celebratory tea in Japan. The food itself during this time was really good and carefully curated. It was interesting to have a bunch of different types of meat and flavor profiles. From a seafood started to beef, to roast pork. My favorite thing was the beef and the dumpling. The dumplings were so delicious and filling. I've had many things here and they are all delicious and fresh. I definitely hope to go back again soon!

I'm afraid no elevator to the upstairs. They have dumbwaiter for food but that's all.

There's not a ton of seating, but we got a table quickly. The service was quick, and even though the place was small, it felt more cozy than cramped. I liked having the menu on the wall! They had two vegan options, and my partner & I both got the Biang Biang noodles. It was good, and perhaps even better the next day (the serving was big enough that I couldn't finish it). My sister got the Jjajiang Mian & absolutely loved it. This was a very positive experience, but not mindblowing--I think that the hype around the "M" restaurants perhaps raised my expectations a bit too much. It's also possible that their non-vegan options are stronger than their vegan options. Overall, though, very yummy, the prices are very reasonable for Durham ($16 for the Biang Biang noodles), and I would come back & try the veggie curry if given the chance.

I was disappointed however when they told me they are currently out of the vegan udon curry dish, which was 1/2 items I could eat. Nevertheless, I ordered the other dish, Biang Biang Noodles. The store was not full, there were two servers and at least 3 tables that were empty but the wait time to get my single dish or noodles took over 30 minutes - way longer than expected. While the noodles were well cooked and packed with flavor, I felt that the dish was far too oily and without much tofu/protein. Perhaps the other meals are less oily and more protein packed, but for being the only vegan option available that day, unfortunately this is all I have to offer at this time.

Today when I called to ask about if the coconut noodle soup had any pork broth, garlic, or onion (things I have to avoid or I will get sick), I could hear a man on the other end of the call being very rude towards me and the girl asking about the ingredients on my behalf. Stuff like this is what steers people with intolerances away from eating out or asking more information about the food we might want to buy. I didn't want a recipe as he suggested, I simply wanted to know if it had anything that is a common allergies or intolerance. Even when I provided the specific things I have issues with, this man continued to be rude. He had an attitude and was saying, "it's coconut" with a rude tone, as if I was dumb for asking if it has any type of broth in the soup. Meanwhile, many restaurants can make soups with chicken broth and other broths and it still be "coconut" or another flavor so I found that really aggravating. Food is a five a star but the man with the attitude bumped it down to three. 4/20: In response to owner's response-- Let's remember that people can develop food intolerances and allergies as they get older. I was having consistent issues before because I did not know what foods gave me issues and pain. However, now I know and am trying to be careful with what I eat. The Tom Kha in particular was only sour and did not leave room for "sweet and savory" as the menu described. For the price of the items the value also isn't there. The passable thing was the appearance of the restaurant and the theme. It felt like there was intention there. The main disappointments come from the quality of the food and also service interaction. The chicken in the Tom Kha and the pork in my friend's ramen were both tough. I was charged extra for the chicken in my Tom Kha order even though the menu said "choice of protein" and it did not indicate an additional charge. Upon addressing this at checkout I asked if it could be compensated since it was not written. The cashier just gave a blunt "no". I am understanding that maybe there was nothing that could be done, but the disappointment and lack of care towards the misunderstanding felt like a disregard for the customer experience. Lastly, my friend ordered a Tonkotsu ramen which is not pictured here and had food poisoning. Seemed like there were plenty of people that visited the restaurant for takeout and enjoy the food, but I will not be returning.
