Jesse also went into detail about specific strategies she would use in labor in my pursuit of a VBAC, demonstrating her wide skill set, and showing me that not only is she emotionally apt, but also highly qualified in the physical aspect of what she does--unlike many doulas, she is not just there primarily for emotional support. That combined with her lovely personality made me feel confident in choosing her to assist my birth. During active labor, Jesse beyond exceeded our expectations. She had a strong intuition about what my body needed and when, clearly developed over her training as a doula and massage therapist, but what is also an obvious innate talent. She pushed me to try strategies outside of my comfort zone as well as respected my limitations and needs. She was a source of both comfort and strength, helping me work through every contraction, repositioning me to get my sunny-side-up baby to spin, making sure I was hydrated, involving my partner, massaging and applying gentle touch, and so much more. She stayed with us throughout my labor that lasted the span of two days, an unwavering touchstone. My daughter was successfully born by VBAC, and I don't know if I could have done it without Jesse. I heard multiple nurses comment on how great a doula she was, and also one said to me directly how lucky I was to have her, because she was one of the best she'd ever worked with. After birth, Jesse stayed with us for longer than an hour to make sure we were settled, and then arranged to get us food from our favorite restaurant to feed the ravenous post-labor hunger, which was quite far away. She absolutely went the extra mile for us in every way. Also, Jesse was willing to work with my husband and I on price. She believes all people should have access to a birth doula, and it is so deeply appreciated. I wholeheartedly recommend Jesse to any laboring person and couple. Her dedication and care just make my heart burst with gratitude.

The issue I have is the ring itself....IT LOOKS LIKE SH*T. Seriously. Looks effing terrible. I'm almost in tears, it looks so bad. The engraved text is not centered at all on the inside of the ring, it is totally haphazard. The text starts out small & very close together then gets bigger & more widely spaced. It is AWFUL!! I emailed the comapny asking how to go about exchanging this. I advised them I'm ok w/ paying a little extra, return shipping, etc. I will update when I hear back. I'm so devastated right now though - the ring looks fake; like a toy. You can hardly read the sides which say "Arizona State" ... Based on the information on her own website, she does not appear to have any formal qualifications in resume writing or career coaching. Her primary credential seems to be that she personally received offers from jobs she applied to and then decided to start writing resumes for other people. The process itself was incredibly disappointing. I spent a significant amount of time filling out detailed forms describing my experience and accomplishments, only to find that much of what I wrote was copied almost verbatim into my resume. There was very little added value or strategic thinking. I could have done that myself. The LinkedIn "optimization" was equally poor. It consisted of little more than rewriting the summary section. There was no discussion of headlines, skills, services, keywords, languages, profile structure, or how recruiters actually search for candidates. It felt like there was no understanding of LinkedIn as a recruiting tool. The most frustrating part was the lack of collaboration. When I asked why certain wording had been chosen and requested a different format, instead of explaining the strategy or discussing alternatives, I was met with, "Why did you hire me then?" That response alone told me everything I needed to know about the level of professionalism I was dealing with. Charging $1,500 for this service is, in my opinion, completely unjustifiable. I expected expertise, thoughtful guidance, and a resume that reflected strategy and experience. Instead, I received a lightly edited version of my own words with little explanation and poor communication throughout the process. This was the biggest waste of money I've ever made and one of the worst service experiences I've had. I cannot recommend this service to anyone.

Imagine, if you will, a light saber. Now shrink it, focus it, and make it a precision handheld device. Congratulations - in your mind's eye, you're now wielding a plasma cutter, which is a real tool you can learn to use and put to effective metal-working use after a workshop here - I did just that during a Weekend Welding Workshop and it was tough to wipe the grin off my face for quite a long time. While that might make for some of the coolest visual imagery to describe, the fact that metal grinders, MiG welders, age-old anvils, fine-gauge jewelry-making tools, ceramic works, and myriad other tools of the trade are waiting to be discovered and shared here is a great impetus to get people excited about the art and science of metal-working. The Yard recognized that and has worked hard over the years to forge the foundation, expand the awareness base, and reach out to the community - all experience levels, age ranges, and walks of life. The events here are a super draw for my family and me. The Halloween Iron Pour. The Ultimate Chef competition. The Steel Yard Cruise Night Car Show. I hear there have also been weddings here...which goes to show you don't need to be actively working metal to enjoy the Yard. That said, seeing some of the custom-chopped and augmented vehicles done on-site doesn't hurt one's appetite to grab some leathers and a visor, and get working. I received a request for donation to the Yard's efforts at the end of 2012 that moved to me action in a way that words hadn't called me to in some time. That was refreshing and invigorating; it was merely (at its essence) a request for support. And support we should. The Steel Yard is an anchor helping to revitalize an area of the city that needs it with its facility location; revitalizing a city that can use those services with its good public works, as with its creation of beautiful and utilitarian benches, garbage cans, and bike racks seen around town; revitalizing people's skill sets by providing constructive classes in a variety of disciplines at fair tuition costs, for multiple age groups; and mostly, revitalizing metal-working as a discipline that is useful, positive, artistic, and tending away from defunct and back toward common. For all of that, The Steel Yard deserves our support in keeping alive The Spark. Get involved and be about it - highest recommendation.
