I had a very uneasy experience with Dr. Borenstein. For $495 per meeting, I expected a lot more. First off, I scheduled a meeting with him because I contracted COVID and two months later was still suffering from lingering symptoms. I explained all of my symptoms to him, and yet throughout the conversation I got the strange impression that he wasn't paying much attention to me. However, he did tell me that he'd be ordering a battery of blood tests. He then asked me--and I kid you not--"Have you ever had COVID?" I was essentially speechless, since I had just spent the session explaining that I was there to be treated for post-COVID syndrome. He then prescribed me Ivermectin, a controversial drug which, as I understood from speaking to three other physicians, has no demonstrated efficacy in clinical trials for treating COVID or post-COVID syndrome, and even carries risks. Although he does have a modicum of clinical acumen, his bedside manner and manners in general are abhorrent. He never asks how my wife is doing and seems completely oblivious to my wife's overall welfare. He is very concerned, however, about his exorbitant fees being collected before he even gives his divided attention. Afraid I'd be the only one that would come here to possibly warn others before making a commitment to see David Borenstein. His approach to my case lacked intuitive care, with an immense amount of clinical ambiguity that created additional anxiety and frustration layered into my existing painful symptom index. He suggested I take medication that not only was impossible form my insurance to cover, but provided no functional alternative or guidance in regard to my symptom profile -- had me on my way and manipulated me to feel I was in good hands when all he did was prescribe an artichoke and ginger motility agent without any clarity, dialogue, or reason. Now that I've come full circle in finally discovering my clinical diagnosis -- I can solidly attest he did not have my best interest at heart. Went to him about several different issues, he put me on $500 worth of supplements and medications that I came to him to get off of and when I saw zero improvements after several months, he dismissed every single one of my concerns. I have seen Dr. Borenstein off and on for several years, including way back when he still took insurance. I went to him when PCP's were unable to sort out what my thyroid was up to. I'm going to give him a mixed review, based on seeing what others have written, because I can see both sides. Now that he does not take insurance, he is able to spend more time with patients which is a plus. When no other doctor could help with my Hashimoto's, he did a super job of managing it. His manner is quirky for sure and I often felt like for someone who works with patients who have symptoms such as brain fog, he talks too fast and explains little. When I had questions written down ahead of time and took notes it went better. My sense was he knows so much and becomes impatient sometimes explaining things over and over. I have a complex case and have never received good care from an endocrinologist. I've had two PCP's over the years who do complete thyroid labs, and when they are more aware of testing for free T3 things go well. Factoring in adrenal fatigue is usually too much for them and this is where Dr. B has been helpful. He doesn't only look at TSH. Where I've questioned his practice is when he makes determinations based on labs but can't quite explain the rationale in a way that I can understand. He put me on low-dose naltrexone which was a big fail and made me quite sick for a few days. He does recommend supplements which he sells but you can also buy them elsewhere for the same price. I found them helpful. He had me on iron, D3 plus a couple others and that was smart and made sense + I felt better. He does love his chats with the compounding pharmacy people. Basically he's a character. I feel like I was getting good care while seeing him but he does have a reputation with other more mainstream MD's. My PCP (retired) who was awesome and a highly regarded integrative medicine practitioner with Mt. Sinai, declined to comment when I said I had started seeing Dr. B. which said volumes. Yet Mary Shomon, the patient advocate, LOVES him. So I'd say see him with an open mind. Maybe he can help you, maybe not. If you are seeing an endocrinologist who only looks at TSH and your case is more complex than that, he's your guy to find answers that can then help you be more informed when seeing other MD's. If you can find a good PCP who looks at T3, Free T3, Vit D and ferritin levels, you may do better. I'm currently seeing a different MD closer to home who is more wholistic and I feel has a better understanding of the thyroid/adrenal/hormone relationship as far as estrogen, progesterone, adrenal support and thyroid Rx management go. I wasn't going to write a review because my experience with the Dr has been so traumatic and I didn't want to re-live it. However, I thought my review could help some people who are deciding weather or not to see the Dr. I carefully read all these reviews before I decided to make an appointment and was confused by such a mixture of great and awful comments. My hope is that my review can help someone make an informed decision. The Dr. over medicates to the point of causing serious damage. He doesn't listen and is quite arrogant. The visits didn't feel personal at all. He was rushed, not focused, and not seeing me as an individual with unique issues but rather another patient with hormonal issues. On top of that, he claims to be functional and integrative, but he prescribes a lot of medications for issues that could be easily addressed via supplements and the right diet. Dr. Borenstein was awful back when he WAS accepting insurance. It was very clear that all he cared about was money. I came to him after feeling completely helpless and he promised he would "fix" me. Let's just say he didn't. I've been struggling with my thyroid and adrenals for over two years. All he did was try and push different kinds of pills on me. My biggest grievance with him was not that he couldn't fix me, but that he was unbelievably rude, arrogant and unprofessional. Every time I visited him he would be on his phone and/or computer, talking over me, interrupting, hurrying me in and out like he was running a factory. I would just like to update my review and further prove my point as to how awful this practice is and how little they care about there patients. I am completely out of my armor thyroid; CVS called the office and requested a refill and were told No, not unless I made an appointment with the doctor. They are clearly all about the dollars and not the health of the patient! I have no medication that supports the function of my thyroid and the doctor and his office will not authorize a refill unless I make an appointment that costs me $250.00 out of pocket?!!?? I called the office, was forced to make an appointment with a nasty receptionist and then she said "have CVS call us back"; wait - no, you call CVS, they called as they should and you declined the refill. I said "why can't you call?" She said that is not our policy, our policy is for them to call US!; I said they did and you said No! She said I will do you a favor and call them; what's the number? A relationship with a doctor can be a very personal thing. I'm glad I didn't read the other reviews before I made my appointment. My experience with Dr. Borenstein has been very positive. I went to Dr. Borenstein after reading thyroiddoc.com recommendations. At the time I first saw him, I was near the end of my rope. I needed someone to figure out how to help me. He was very encouraging and told me he thought he could help. He wasn't judgmental and didn't play the blame game. After running a battery of tests, he sat with a calculator and figured out that my meds needs to be altered slightly. Eureka! It worked and continues to work. He's never tried to sell me any vitamins (although I've seen them in his office). He's thorough, and I wouldn't give a flip if he had a fire-breathing dragon at his front desk . . . he helped me when none of my other fancy schmancy Park Avenue doctors did. Sadly, this doctor no longer accepts any insurance at all. Like so many integrative and holistic practitioners, it has become out of reach for many who need it. The appointments are extremely rushed, in and out, often fewer than 10 minutes long, no time for questions. Perhaps this will improve now that fewer people can afford the appointments? In my experience, Dr. Borenstein is clearly knowledgeable, but during the almost 4 years I saw him, I almost always felt like he had decided how to treat me before I opened my mouth. I have been to many doctors over the years about my constant feeling of lethargy, and generally not functioning how I envisioned I should be. I also have had severe neck pain from a herniated disc that has been treated with trigger point injections for years with 0 improvement. Dr. Borenstein identified my under active thyroid and low testosterone, in addition to a slew of other blood and nutritional deficiencies. I was prescribed some medication and offered dietary supplements that were available at the office. Well, fast forward a few months and I actually feel like a human being. If you value your life you wouldn't go to this man. He diagnosed me with hypothyroidism when my labs were normal. I went to him with having symptoms of hypo but it turned out to be a few vitamin deficiencies and epstein barr that was causing my fatigue. I have no family history of thyroid anything! He had me on so much medication and supplements while scarring the daylights out of me about my health. Took 12 months to review all my labs and realize this guy was nonsense and was only draining my pockets. I saw him for a year. At my first visit I described my symptoms and issues ( keep in mind, these symptoms are the same as a b12, d3, and iron deficiencies) he looked at older labs that I brought in, and he said my thyroid "is shot, doesn't work". Me not being a dr, i believed him! So he put me on compounded t3, 15mcg. After three months, at my follow up he increased me to 22 mcg. He also had me on adrenal and I asked him why I was gaining weight on these and he had no answer besides I need more t3. well, the more t3 he gave me, the more weight I was gaining (could have been the adrenal supplement he told me I " desperately needed") and my hair was falling out. When I told him on the next visit that my hair is falling out, he said I needed more t3, well lets just say the problem got worse and I started getting depression and severe anxiety. the heart palpitations were terrible, the night sweats, the waking up 3 am every night. I was miserable. Again next follow up telling him this he said my thyroid just simply is not working and I need 40 mcg of t3. My eye balls almost fell out of my head. I came to Dr Borenstein's office 3 years ago in January at a loss for what was going on with my body. My primary care physician kept saying my thyroid levels were "within normal" and they were "following protocol" putting me on Levothyroxin. I was suffering from extreme fatigue, insomnia, hair loss, rosacea, joint pain and an unexplainable weight gain (I am an avid runner). After googling and reading tons of information on thyroid health, I found Dr. Borenstein. After a bunch of blood tests (30 vials withdrawn - gulp), I learned from Dr Borenstein that I was allergic to gluten, corn and shrimp and was suffering from Hashimotos. I went to Dr Borenstein in an advanced state of what is known as Hashimoto's, or endocrine autoimmune. This post is long and thorough, and I hope it will help others who have gone through similar difficult health experiences. Like so many people posting here have learned, this illness can be disabling or life-threatening, and at best many patients with very healthy lifestyles go overnight from running marathons to chronic extreme fatigue with a devastating impact on job performance and quality of life. It is complex and considered basically untreatable by conventional medicine. It is also associated with higher rates of certain cancers, autoimmune diagnoses, and other illnesses. At the same time it often seems to go undiagnosed, misdiagnosed, or poorly managed even by top specialists; just ask Dr. Oz. At the same time, autoimmune endocrine is a fast-emerging area of study, with many patients responding well to simple, safe, alternative medicine than to conventional medicine. While I commend any doctor for taking this diagnosis on with real intellectual curiosity, I only ask doctors to keep in mind treatment is not one-size-fits-all, and desperately ill patients are not cash cows, even if it is outrageously expensive and stressful to practice holistic medicine or any medicine in NYC. Dr. Borenstein is such a smart guy, and helped me start to move forward after a lifetime of increasing bad health and misdiagnosis. I was open minded and excited to see my first "holistic M.D." He moved very quickly during our first appointment but seemed to be listening. It was such a relief, after decades hearing it was normal to be extremely fatigued and out of it, or being told I must not be taking excellent care of myself, to hear my symptoms matched endocrine autoimmune. He was willing to do complex labs, unlike many who do TSH labs only. He agreed patients can have endocrine autoimmune symptoms with normal labs, possibly due to fluctuating immune response. However, there were a lot of areas he wasn't familiar with. I actually have no problem with this...except, after a few appointments when I didn't respond well to all treatments he was familiar with or have 90$ out of pocket for overpriced vitamins and minerals, he acted like I was a chore, while also asking me to wait a month for each appointment and new potential treatment we had already discussed. This was surprising after the initial, very positive experience. I was so ill I could barely get out of bed or remember my name some days, and on the fast track to losing job and insurance. Whatever his reason for not booking me me more than once a month, I did not have the luxury of time or a lot of cash out of pocket at every appointment. My biggest frustration was a lack of compassion or intellectual curiosity for my state. Not looking for someone to hold my hand...just a really basic and polite explanation that we've reached the limit of a doctor's current expertise is really nice. Add to that: I'm a big believer in [studied, traditional, safe] herbs because they are often the only thing that has worked for me. But people with Hashi's often have strong reactions or allergies, he didn't have recommended dosage, and he wanted me to continue daily with a combo that made me sleep for 18 hours, wake up feeling completely drunk, and sleep for another fifteen hours. This was followed at the next appointment by a hormone supplement that I was later told by other health professionals could be dangerous for some people with my profile. I ended up losing my job and insurance pretty soon after my last appointment with him, where he said in an irritated tone that I was a difficult patient; something I knew better than anyone. I started gradually improving about another year later, due in part to some of his recommendations that I did further research on, and also due to my own continuous research and experimentation with diet, and continuous expensive experimentation to find supplements that didn't make me sicker. I really wanted to like Dr. Borenstein and appreciated my initial experience with him so much. And medicine is no picnic, especially if you're thinking outside the conventional medicine box. Dr. Borenstein changed my life! No exaggeration. I'm 33 years old and feel better and healthier than I did at 23. After being diagnosed with hypothyroidism at a young age and visiting at least 6 different endocrinologists, I feel as though I have finally found a doctor who "gets" it. HAVE YOU EVER FELT LIKE YOU JUST GOT RIPPED OFF...I went to Dr. Borenstein for Stem Cell Therapy. MY MISTAKE. I have been living with chronic pain for many years in my lower back and hip. My pain management doctor told me that Stem Cell therapy might help. So I went on line and found Dr. Borenstein. The office was very shabby for a upper west side of Manhattan address. Dr. Borenstein took me into his office and after telling him what has been going on with me for the last 10 years as far as the pain he QUICKLY read my MRI report and told me he could fix the problem, NEVER LOOKED ANT THE FILMS, He took me into his examining room and asked me if it hurts here and there. He said dont worry , I cant promise you anything but I really think Stem Cell Therapy is for you... I had tried everything else and he could see how desperate I was not to have Back surgery.. The procedure would cost $7500 . We made and appointment and I gave him a deposit of $1000 , He told me I could put on my credit card.. He also said that if I paid the rest in cash at the time of my procedure he would take off $500. I came to my appointment and his nurse or secretary, not to sure what she was took me into the examining room... I was told that she had come in earlier and disinfected the room, in other words the examining room was the operating room. I was not put in a gown or anything like that . Then he showed me the syringe and said this is where all the stem cells are... He then reached under the counter and took out a machine that spins the blood again all of this in a shabby examining room. I came back and he took me in to another room where he started an IV drip and told me he was going to give me the magic juice PRP.... HE added some of my what he said was my stem cells to the PRP and i had a whole bag...... Dr. Borenstein then told me to go back into the examining room or operating room,, He then mixed in another large syringe the stem cells and the PRP and he started injecting he said he was using Lidocane first but it was the WORST PAIN that I had had .... it was terrible. I told him and he said we are almost done,,,, after about 20 injections he said we were done..... I was so dizzy, I almost passed out,. They had to give me juice and things and told me to sit for awhile....... After a week or 2 I got a call from Dr. Borenstein and asked me how I was doing,,,, I told him no change in my condition. He told me to come in for a booster shoot, and I did,,,,, WORST PAIN THAN THE FIRST TIME.. 14 INJECTIONS....... Dr. Borenstein called me in a month and asked how I was doing. Beware. This doctor is rude, arrogant and dismissive. After spending $1000 on two visits and being brushed off with concerns I'm left feeling this guy is little more than a hack. Visits to his office are rushed and his behavior is strange and off putting. Like someone else said - I suspect the glowing reviews are either posted by himself or friends or maybe at the very least favorites who are easily treatable anyway. Don't waste your time or money - It's sad that integrative doctors are so far and few and many of the ones available just seem to take advantage of vulnerable patients running out of choices. Integrative doctors are supposed to work WITH patients and at the very least explain the rationale behind the treatment instead of giving glib one sentence responses. Disappointed :-( * The day after posting this review my wife received an email from this Dr. stating that he needed to talk to her "about something I did". This of course set my wife thinking of the many possible things I could have done (unethical much?) - . She called him and it was about this review - Why didn't he just state in the email it was about the review? The doctor asked that it be removed and then we would be "friends". There was no mention of what he could have done to address my concerns one of which was the long time between being given medicine and following up (2 and a half months!). We then later got a call from the office stating that the doctor was not available for that appointment anyway and would have to reschedule - Maybe because I didn't take down the review? I'm angry that we wasted so much money on this doctor who clearly does not have his patients needs at heart. We have found another doctor who is more "integrative". Oh and it's interesting that the day after I entered my one star rating a 5 star rating pops up. All the ratings are either 1 star or 5 star - Guess which ones are more believable? The 5 star ratings all sound the same - It's your dime. Oh, and the cost of the bloodwork that this doctor referred me for and took all of 15 seconds to peruse? $3400. Thank god I have insurance. ***Just found out our insurance refused to pay for the blood work because they are not medically necessary and we have to foot the $3400 even though we were assured by Borenstein's office insurance would cover the tests. This means two visits to his office have left us almost $5000 worse off and NOTHING to show for it. I first met with Dr Borenstein in 2013. Initially he helped me with all my hormonal change of life issues with great success. As life always has it, once on track and feeling great I stopped visiting Dr B. In 2016 I was suddenly suffering from acute chronic pain. After months of visiting many doctors I was finally diagnosed with PMR. Polymyalgia Rheumatica. Long story short I had suffered for way to long in pain and doctors constantly placed me on prednisone, pain killers etc. when my levels were normal I was still in pain. I suddenly realized that I needed to go back to Dr B for his approach to functional medicine. Long story short and careful listening on Dr Bs end I have been feeling my best ever and pain free. I would rate him a zero if the site had that option. Run, don't walk from this doctor. He caused me huge problems with my thyroid that has taken months to resolve by aggressively dosing me way too high. My pituitary shut down and I had lots of unpleasant side effects that I'm still dealing with. He certainly does not dot his i's and cross his t's. He may have knowledge but doesn't take the time or provide oversight, plus his demeanor is surely odd. I never received an answer from his office when I called about symptoms I was having after a change in the dose of my thyroid medication. What really signaled a problem for me, as the full picture of the aggressively overdosing my thyroid medication had not yet become fully apparent, was when I left his office with FOUR prescriptions for new medications I had never taken and was told to come back in four months. That is beyond unprofessional and irresponsible to wait that long and not followup. I then sought help elsewhere. Essentially he seems more concerned with pushing thru large numbers of patients thru his office rather than taking the time to help them. Certainly, this approach is the total opposite of what integrative medicine is about. If I wanted that approach, I could have gone to a mainstream Endocrinologist. read more

I came to Dr. Borenstein 8 weeks ago for thyroid and hormone problems, feeling horrible. I was extremely impressed by the thorough evaluation for both of these diagnosis. He gave me as much time as I needed and listened intensely. He also returns phone calls right away. He prescribed the right medication on the first try. No other doctor that I have seen was able to do that. I feel great. He is also warm and friendly and gives very good life-style advise. I definitely recommend him. I have not seen Dr Borenstein for over a year now. But, I have been feeling badly about not making a review. I have never posted a review before. I was being treated for Hashimotos. I found the doctor to be quite arrogant and he would brush off my questions and eat sushi (that would fall out of mouth) during our 10-15 minute appointments. He kept telling me I had adrenal fatigue and that is why I felt so awful. He never tested my adrenals. He upped my nature throid dose 3 times. He prescribed all his adrenal supplements and told me to de-stress myself (I have a pretty stress-free life I told him, but that was ignored). He also said I should take a prescription for hormone balance (again, never tested) and would call his friend or maybe it was his brother's pharmacy and they would have a quick banter on the phone. I continued to feel horrible and never got any other answers from him so I started seeing a new doctor. Turns out I had Lymes Disease (never had the bulls eye rash) and I was being totally over-medicated for my Hashimotos. So please be weary. read more

Dr Borenstein trys hard to sell you useless herbs and vitamins to make money. When your very sick you dont have money to waste on foolish things that dont help. He often uses dr tetilbaums lousy and outdated "fatigue to fantastic" protocol for CFIDS which is proven garbage. He hasnt helped me and he puts all CFIDS/ FM patients into the same "ive heard it all before" catagory. The woman who runs his office reeks of ciggerette smoke from 10 feet away. Its gross. I saw Dr. Borenstein a few years ago and was very disappointed. I think he is a fraud, but I see he is appearing a lot these days in various venues. I went to him b/c of the usual frustrations experienced by hypothyroid patients. He seems to think that T3 cures everything, and he put me on what turned out to be a dangerously high dose. Plus he stopped my regular meds. It took months to get my bloods back to normal. I also checked his background. He is NOT an endocrinologist. So beware. Is there a way to give this "doctor" zero stars? Borenstein was incredibly rude, dismissive, unhelpful and in general, extremely uncomfortable to be around. During our first visit, he promised to fix all my problems (resulting from an under-active thyroid). He then proceeded to call his pharmacist friend on speaker phone while I was in his office...called him three times while I sat there.. (btw, have never had a legitimate doctor call in an rx while i sat in his office), then the pharmacist picks up his cell phone and screamed an expletive). Is that what I paid $500 for an initial appointment for? I could go on and on about the overall experience of working with him but its the same story of many of the other people below who vocalized their disturbing experiences.
