I started taking lessons with David about 3 years ago. He is a great experienced teacher and amazing musician. I never learned an instrument growing up and was close to middle age and wanted to learn something but I wanted to be somewhat serious so I found David for lessons. For the first year or so I asked a lot of basic questions frequently and he always took the time to explain about music theory, guitars and gear, whatever I asked. Slow and steady I have made significant progress over the years. There were a lot of times I thought I wasn't making enough progress (I often don't have much time to practice) and considered quitting, but David never gave me a hard time, we just keep adapting as we go. Frequently learning and trying different styles of music. Recently I moved out of state but I've stayed on with David remotely and continue to make progress on my guitar journey. I started taking guitar lessons with David back in May 2023. David has been very patient with me and taught me many things about playing guitar. I started out with learning basic chords (C,E,D,G,F, A,etc.), learning how to tune a guitar, playing with capo, and other basics. Then 1 month into our lesson, I started learning popular pop songs like Coldplay Yellow, Ed Sheeran's Photograph. Then about 4 months into our lesson, I started learning about barre chords, G Major Scale, and other more advanced concepts. Now I can play more difficult songs from Disney. As a long-time student of Dave's, I can personally speak from experience that Dave is one of the most patient and gifted guitar instructors in the Seattle area. He teaches out of two very conveniently located studios, one in Bellevue and one in Redmond. My goal for learning guitar was to play kids songs to keep my son entertained. I wasn't sure how to approach this since I had the perception that Dave was a hardcore rock and roll electric guitar instructor. Dave is the best. The most patient and knowledgeable teacher ever, and overall very nice guy. Tackles anything you want to learn with expertise. I've been on steady tracks learning jazz and blues, and sprinkles of anything I may want to learn during my session. I can literally throw any song at Dave, and he'll write out what you need to know with a highly-skilled musical ear, and explain theoretically what's going on in the song. Most importantly, Dave listens to you and what your musical goals are. I'm about a year in under Dave's instruction and I can honestly say the progress I've made is immense. Dave is an incredibly patient and encouraging teacher, and I found this to be especially valuable because I'm a rank beginner who never had the benefit of music lessons when I was young. Even if you only want to learn some quick chords to impress your friends, Dave's your guy. He'll have you playing a song or two in a day or two. And if you want to delve deeper into what makes the notes make sense, Dave does a great job of breaking it all down. I highly recommend David as a guitar teacher! He can play any style, and he's really open and able to work with you in whatever manner you'd like. He's great with beginners as well as accomplished musicians. He's truly a musician in that he appreciates music as a form of expression and is very non-judgmental. Full disclosure: I've known David for many years, and played in bands from the time we were both in high school. Musically, Dave has always been a big influence on me, and I've learned so much just working with him in various situations as a drummer and bass player. He's an amazing musician, both as a performer and teacher. Recently I decided to brush up on my guitar technique. I'm most interested in composing music, so my goal is to gain a better familiarity with guitar theory, chord usage, soloing, and doctoring up some of the songs I have written. As soon as I walked in and explained what I needed, Dave immediately pinpointed the areas that I needed to work on. He was very receptive to what I wanted to work on, but also took me in some new directions that have greatly helped me. I have quite a bit of experience playing the guitar, but have forgotten some of the basics, so in many ways he has helped me rediscover these important aspects of guitar that I have neglected or forgotten over the years. Dave won't waste your time. He works efficiently to get you the knowledge and skills that you need to play the guitar, and is attentive to your personal goals, whether it's just to learn how to play some simple songs or to master a particular style of playing. But he will also take the time just to talk music with you, share his favorite artists, and give advice. Bonus: he's got a great sense of humor.
