Tucked away in a little corner near Alexandra Palace, Laboratory Spa & Health Club is not an easy…read morecommute if you don't live in the area - the closest tube station is Bounds Green on the Piccadilly line, and you have to take a bus and walk through a quiet residential area. Which sort of works to its favour, since it doesn't seem too well known outside of the locals. I visited with a friend after buying a voucher on Lastminute.com. The spa is very nice and the staff very welcoming. We were on the day spa package, which included a lunch. The manager showed us around the changing areas, the treatment areas and the restaurant. It's a well laid out spa, and has all the expected facilities - massage/treatment rooms, a steam room, a sauna, sun bed, swimming pool, jacuzzi and a gym. We made good use of the facilities, starting with lunch. I had the stir fried vegetables and chicken, with miso noodles - not sure this was a strong item on the lunch menu, as the miso paste wasn't mixed in very well and the dish was really salty. But the fruit juice smoothie of the day was amazing and made me feel super healthy - it was peach, mango, banana and honey - yum! My friend's lunch faired better with grilled halloumi and salad. The facilities are well kept and it all looks quite new. If you are a day spa guest, then there is a "dry room" that you can use too, where you can relax on a sun lounger and read magazines (or in our case, fall asleep... yes, it was all incredibly relaxing!). If it wasn't so difficult to get to, I would be back - but then, that's probably to its favour as you probably don't want to be inundated with people.

There is an underground swimming pool, top of the range cardio and resistance machines, exercise areas and studios for classes. With all top of the range gyms there are on-site therapy rooms for pampering sessions when you've finished your workout and the Lab is no different. The big plus with The Laboratory is the stunning gardens where (weather permitting) some of the classes can take place, or somewhere you can chill out with your drink from the juice bar.

Two visits at this club and to be honest, I don't really want to go back. While this chain usually…read morehas a good reputation, I was quite surprised by what I saw. Membership is around 80 quid per month which sounds great because they have a swimming pool. So was I was not able to see the pool as it was being fixed this week. What I have seen is the reception area, the changing rooms, the cardio rooms and the machines. I will write a few lines about each. The reception area is on the first floor and one is not really sure where to go exactly. After seeing the building itself, I have to say, it looks like a scampy old building and not very nice. Once passed reception, you pass an area with some tables - not too sure though what they are for. So far, I have only seen employees sitting there on their break. The changing rooms are quite nice though I have not yet figured out why some are reserved and others are not. They are quite nice but make sure you have the right padlock with you. But you need one of the large ones. Otherwise you need to buy one from them! The cardio and machines rooms are nice. Seperated into three rooms, they allow enough space for all to use - except at peak times. Bikes, cross-trainers, running machines etc. all there. Just make sure you bring a towel. Lots of people don't. Rather nasty when people (esp. some men) are sweating heavily! They do provide sanitary towels but hardly anyone uses them. Another downside is that there are only 8 mats for stretching etc. - a few more would certainly do. The machines are nice, but for most you cannot change the back or sitting height unfortanutely. Also, there is only one machine of each. This means some waiting time ussually. Overall, the gym has potential. I would advise the management to ask members to use a towel at all times underneath themselves. Also, there should be at least one member of staff around the training area at all times for help and advice. Otherwise, members must go all the way back up acoss the floor to get to reception to ask. Right now, this club can only get 2 stars because too many things are going wrong or are in urgent need of improvement!

Good improvement since last review! The pool area has been refurbished!…read more Last review: This place is falling apart. I take my kids here for swimming lessons and the pool area has really degraded in the last two years. They are in the process of refurbishing some areas. Hopefully the pool is next on their list!
