The consultation went fine, although I felt Dr. Spann seemed a bit cocky and barely looked in my mouth. The nurse staff had a weird sorority vibe around him, but everyone was very nice and I moved ahead with the surgery. Before I was taken into the operating room I discussed my medication allergies with the nurse (I only have two, one being amoxicillin, which makes me break out in horrible hives). They explained the procedure to me and asked if I had any concerns. I said not really, only that I have a birth control implant in my left arm, and therefore would prefer to have the anesthesia IV in my right arm. She said that was perfect and we made our way to the surgery room. We had yet another conversation about my implant during the walk down the hall, and I demonstrated how you can feel in through my skin. I laid down for surgery and a mask was put over my face, the laughing gas caused me to drift away and I heard them talking about putting the IV in. I felt the nurse touching my left arm and was jerked awake as she tied the rubber tourniquet directly over my implant in my left arm!! It felt as though it was pushed through my skin. I was able to say "not the left one," then heard her say "oh right, oops!" and I was pulled under. My boyfriend drove me home and went back out to get my antibiotics and pain pills. When he returned, the antibiotic they had prescribed me was amoxicillin! I told him I was very allergic and I went back to sleep. It took him about three hours to get everything sorted out with the pharmacy and nurses at COFS (who simply said "oops" again about the mistake). Because of this careless mix up I wasn't able to take my full rounds of antibiotics my first recovery day. Following the surgery in October, my arm felt consistently sore and uncomfortable. My period had began a few days before the surgery and didn't stop until the beginning of February. I was finally able to get an appointment with my gynecologist, suspecting that the nurse had in fact damaged the Nexaplon implant. It was removed yesterday, bent and creased. My gynecologist said that's not something that happens, and was surely a result of this nurse ignoring me. I understand mistakes happen, but I felt I wasn't listened to at all by these medical "professionals," and that they were only going through the motions of the job. Also, six whole weeks after the surgery, my chin and lips were still numb. I understand nerve damage can happen in this procedure, and my nerves did slowly repair and feeling has returned, but it made me wonder what other mistakes occurred while I was unconscious...

As I sit and write in detail all of the emotions and feelings I have had over the surgery was a bit…read moreoverwhelming, but my surgery truly changed my life. I cannot express how grateful I am to Dr. Scanland for the skill and talent she has and the results that I ended up with were beyond my expectations! Have you ever felt like a different person inside than what everyone else sees? Ever been told (by a friend) that you look deformed? These were experiences I had after a 3-year battle and losing 120 lbs.! I had skin in folds and felt ugly all the time! Dr. Scanland changed that! I interviewed several other doctors and when meeting with Dr. Scanland I felt totally comfortable! She had a feminine point of view and was very specific and confident in the results we could achieve; and boy did she deliver!!!! At three months post-surgery I was in a bikini for the first time in my adult life. A year post surgery and I couldn't be happier. I can do things I wanted to do before but was too self-conscious to do or just physically unable to do so because of the shape/size I was. I can exercise now and don't flop around trying to do a jumping jack! lol. I have never regretted my decision to undergo a Tummy Tuck. I finally feel like the REAL ME: the person I always felt I was underneath all the extra weight and then floppy skin! I look forward to my next experience with Dr. Scanland and her amazing team! Everyone in the practice is so helpful and willing/prompt to answer any questions you may have!
